We've all got fears. For some, it's the dark, for others, it's spiders, heights, or maybe even something as ordinary as a phone call. But when those fears take root and are no longer reasonable; when they take over, that's when they cross into the territory of phobias. Phobias remind us that our brains, for all their brilliance, aren't always working in our favor and are flawed. According to a survey by Anxiety UK, there are ten phobias that show up more often than the rest. So what are these phobias? And are there any phobias related to animals? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: Where does our phobia of clowns come from? You know that moment when you realize civilization might have peaked at “salt, oil, and potato”? That's where we begin this bonus episode. Pete, Tommy, and returning culinary chaos agent Mandy Kaplan gather around a table piled high with some of the strangest snack inventions ever unleashed on the palate—because if adulthood is about making terrible decisions and pretending they're research, then this is a dissertation.Armed with a scientific scoring system that rates flavor accuracy, emotional resonance, and the elusive chaos factor, the trio wade bravely into the salty abyss: Late Night Loaded Taco Doritos, Dill Pickle Lays, Flamin' Hot Limón Cheetos, Hot Ones Verde Pringles, Pizza Pringles, Special Sauce Kettle Chips, and a truly cursed bag of Stranger Things “Cool Ranch Collisions.”Along the way, Pete delivers a history lesson revealing that the potato chip was invented out of spite (because of course it was), Tommy questions every life choice that brought him to this recording, and Mandy achieves spiritual awakening through protein chips. Together they confront the unspoken truth of snack evolution: we've weaponized flavor. This is an episode about chips, sure—but it's also about curiosity, regret, and the very adult ability to know better and eat it anyway. So grab a bag, loosen your moral compass, and join us as we discover which chip truly embodies the modern condition: chaotic, over-flavored, and proud of it.Get the whole show! In this episode of the Next Level Healing Podcast, Dr. Tara Perry had the pleasure of interviewing her friend Estella, whom she met at a Dr. Richard Bandler NLP conference. Estella's journey of overcoming a severe snake phobia in less than an hour serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).The conversation begins by reflecting on Estella's intense fear of snakes, which had previously dominated her life to the point where she avoided any mention of them, even on television. Dr. Tara shared her excitement about the opportunity to help her confront this fear, especially since she was not afraid of the other phobias we were addressing that day, such as spiders, heights, and public speaking.Estella recounted her experience leading up to the moment she had to touch a real snake. Her heart raced, and she felt a mix of horror and disbelief at the thought of facing her fear. However, through her session, Dr. Tara was able to guide her past her resistance, and she ultimately found the courage to not only touch the snake but to embrace it. This breakthrough was not just about the snake; it symbolized conquering fears that had held her back in various aspects of her life.Work with Dr. Tara PerryTune in every week for a new episode of Next Level Healing. Clowns are supposed to make you laugh, but often can make you shudder. What is supposed to be a figure of fun is for many the stuff of nightmares. Coulrophobia —the irrational fear of clowns that's surprisingly common. This has been reinforced by popular culture, and many horror film-makers know that a scary clown is the perfect recipe for thrills, resulting in them becoming an icon of terror. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology in February 2023 surveyed 900 individuals, revealing that 53% experienced clown-related fear. Participants pinpointed clown makeup as the primary source of discomfort, with its distortion of human features creating an air of menace. Unable to discern true emotions behind the painted facade, people feel unsettled by the clown's unpredictable antics. The Science Behind the Fear What exactly is so unnerving about clowns? Episode 388: On the morning of August 5, 2013, Campbellton, New Brunswick, faced an unthinkable tragedy. Police and first responders were called to an apartment above Reptile Ocean, the town's reptile and fish shop, where they found Connor and Noah Barthe, brothers aged six and four, dead after a sleepover with their friend Jayce Savoie. Sometime in the night, a 12-foot, 53-pound African rock python owned by shopkeeper Jean-Claude Savoie escaped its enclosure, slithered through a vent, and fatally attacked the sleeping boys. The official cause of death was “traumatic asphyxia by constriction,” a finding that shocked the small community and quickly attracted national and international attention. As investigators began their work, residents struggled to comprehend how a night of friendship ended in such horror. Savoie was charged with criminal negligence causing death, setting the stage for a legal and ethical debate that would raise tough questions and stir deep emotions far beyond Campbellton. In this episode, Jim Murphy, New York Times bestselling author, shares how leaders can build resilience, reframe fear, and operate at their highest level under pressure. His approach blends performance psychology, neuroscience, and spiritual discipline. 1. Identity Beyond Roles Murphy emphasizes the risk of anchoring identity in professional roles or achievements: “When I lost baseball due to injury, I felt like I lost everything. My whole identity was wrapped up in that role.” For executives and consultants, this is a reminder: leadership requires identity that outlasts titles, deals, or short-term wins. Anchoring in deeper values creates long-term stability. 2. Fear as a Performance Constraint Murphy defines fear as “a byproduct of self-centeredness.” The executive cost is high: constant comparison, judgment, and anxiety undermine decision-making. He identifies three key obstacles to peak performance: Excessive, scattered thoughts Negative or judgmental self-talk Concern with others' opinions “When you're at your very best … there's no concern for self. You're totally caught up in the moment.” This mirrors what elite consultants and CEOs must practice: focus on the work, not the ego. 3. Rewiring Fear and Trauma Murphy reframes fear and phobias: “Phobias are your subconscious working perfectly to protect you.” Through structured methods and neuroplasticity, leaders can “rewire” how they respond to past failures and pressure. “You can have a phobia for 50 years, and it can be gone in less than an hour.” For executives, the takeaway is clear: performance limits are rarely permanent, they can be retrained. 4. Freedom Through Surrender and Detachment Murphy shares a practical mantra he learned from an athlete he trained: “I expect nothing. I can handle anything.” This principle strips away attachment to outcomes, freeing leaders to make bolder, less ego-driven decisions. As he puts it: “The most powerful thing anyone can do is surrender their little strength for the power that grows the grass and spins the earth.” For leaders, this translates into resilience, the ability to operate under uncertainty without fear of reputational or financial loss clouding judgment. 5. The Best Possible Life (and Career) Murphy notes: “The best possible life has one foot in joy and one foot in suffering. We can't gain wisdom without going through hard things.” For high performers, this is a critical leadership principle: growth requires discomfort. A career without setbacks yields little wisdom. 6. Practical Tools Leaders Can Use Murphy provides several techniques executives can adopt immediately: Breath control: slowing to 5–6 breaths per minute to stabilize thought patterns under pressure. Structured reflection: gratitude, presence, and visualization as part of a daily routine. Ego discipline: exercises that reduce the need for external validation and increase clarity in communication. Have you ever felt stuck between knowing what you should do and actually following through? That gap between intention and action isn't a character flaw - it's your brain running old programs. What if you could rewrite them? That's exactly what I explored with Dr. David Spiegel, pioneer in clinical hypnotherapy research, author, and founder of the Reveri self-hypnosis app. He breaks down how hypnosis isn't mind control or stage tricks, but a focused state of attention that helps you get out of your own way and create real change in your sleep, eating, weight, pain, stress, and habits. We talk about the science of self-hypnosis, why it works when insight alone doesn't, and how technology is making it accessible to everyone. Diet culture, weight stigma, and fat-phobia all contribute to our perceptions of ideal body image and promote endless comparisons. In our first members-only check-in of the season, Tommy celebrates turning 50 by becoming a human pincushion, Pete fights raccoons for dominion over his crawlspace, and we both spiral about doctors, insurance, and glasses that make us look like malfunctioning robots. There's also a detour through indie films, legacy podcasts, and the unsettling realization that ChatGPT knows way too much about our sore feet. Think of it as adulthood bingo—except the free space is “raccoon poop.”Become a Feeling Friend today at https://allthefeelings.fun. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Meet Rosie, who wanted to share her story even though she's still in the thick of it all and is a beautiful reminder that you don't need a happy ending to inspire others, sometimes sharing the messy middle is exactly what someone else needs to hear. Rosie thought she'd be a young mum but found herself starting her fertility journey at 28. After a heartbreaking chemical pregnancy and feeling left behind while friends had babies easily, Rosie discovered she had PCOS and wasn't ovulating regularly. From her needle phobia (shoutout to her amazing mother-in-law who does all her injections!) to unexpected parathyroid complications that threw a major curveball into her plans, Rosie's path has been anything but straightforward. Just when IVF was underway, high calcium levels revealed enlarged parathyroids requiring not one, but TWO surgeries - including the discovery of a rare fifth parathyroid! She's navigated failed OI cycles, learned the hard way about IVF expectations vs reality, and is now banking embryos with her eyes on the prize. Thanks for sharing Rosie
Full Plate: Ditch diet culture, respect your body, and set boundaries.
In midlife, women are often handed diets disguised as wellness. More ways to stay young, stay thin, stay "timeless."Debra Benfield, RDN, joins me for a conversation that sits right at the intersection of diet culture, anti-fatness, and anti-aging. Together we talk about how these forces converge in midlife—often making women particularly vulnerable to disordered eating and harmful messaging at exactly the stage when we deserve peace, rest, and joy. Some of the things we get into…* Perimenopause and menopause diet culture messages* Why aging creates heightened vulnerability to diet and wellness culture* The impact of stress and restrictive eating on longevity* Mid-life marketing of disordered eating advice* Wrinkles, Botox, and the skin-care industry* The tyranny of the “belly fat” narrative* How wellness culture capitalizes on our fear of aging and death* Whether strength training is part of the anti-aging conversation* The ways ableism, sexism, and agism collide in media* How to navigate fear-mongering messages about food, weight, and health* What we can do to reclaim our time and energy and powerThis is an episode about reclaiming our power and time from the industries profiting off our insecurities. About saying no to being sold “youth in a bottle” and yes to embracing the fullness of who we are—wrinkles, softness, wisdom, and all.Debra has helped hundreds of women heal their relationship with food and their bodies over her 35-year career as a Registered Dietitian. She specializes in the prevention and treatment of disordered eating, and brings her passion, expertise, and lived experience to the intersection of pro-aging and body liberation work. Deb's work is rooted in helping clients recognize internalized ageism and end it, dismantle internalized diet culture and fatphobia, see midlife and beyond as a time of Emergence, nourish their bodies to support vitality and aging, and develop a respectful partnership with their bodies.Support the show: Enjoying this podcast? Well, Pete and Tommy do, and it's exactly as humbling, awkward, and hilarious as you'd imagine. In this bonus-but-also-a-bit-of-a-mistake 13th episode of All The Feelings: Adulting, our hosts finally open the floodgates to the backlog of listener questions, comments, and fever-dream confessions you've been sending since episode three. What follows is part confessional, part group therapy, and part feverish improv jam session featuring:The story of Daisy the dog, who unearths a grease-soaked “treasure” that her humans nearly turn into lunch. The ethics of eating from the garbage (or as Tommy calls it, “a betrayal from God Himself”).The delicate art of managing your mom's dating life without auditioning for Law & Order: Elder Crimes.Theme park survival strategies when your traveling companions are slower than Splash Mountain in January.Anxiety dreams that combine advanced mathematics with rodeo equipment. The suspicious prevalence of unopened crockpots in Midwestern garages. Why your parents need a “safe word” in case someone clones your voice to scam them for Bitcoin. This episode is proof that your stories are as weird and wonderful as we'd hoped… and that we should really check our filters more often. ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Have you ever felt almost afraid to set a boundary—especially with someone you love? You're not alone. In this episode, I share the story of a client who jokingly called it “boundary phobia” and how that phrase perfectly captures the fear and discomfort so many of us feel when we try to protect our time, energy, or emotional well-being. We'll talk about: The fears that keep us saying “yes” when we want to say “no” The myths we've been taught about boundaries and relationships Why boundaries are about action as much as they are about words How to set healthy boundaries with yourself first—and why that's the key to holding them with others A short guided reflection to help you identify one internal boundary you can start practicing today If you've been feeling drained, resentful, or guilty about saying no, this episode will help you shift the way you think about boundaries so they feel less like walls and more like doors you control.
