Have you ever felt stuck between knowing what you should do and actually following through? That gap between intention and action isn't a character flaw - it's your brain running old programs. What if you could rewrite them? That's exactly what I explored with Dr. David Spiegel, pioneer in clinical hypnotherapy research, author, and founder of the Reveri self-hypnosis app. He breaks down how hypnosis isn't mind control or stage tricks, but a focused state of attention that helps you get out of your own way and create real change in your sleep, eating, weight, pain, stress, and habits. We talk about the science of self-hypnosis, why it works when insight alone doesn't, and how technology is making it accessible to everyone. Dr. Spiegel also guides me (and you) through a live mini-session so you can feel what it's like yourself. Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Introduction and Guest Welcome: Dr. David Spiegel 02:00 What Hypnosis Really Is (and Isn't) 07:30 How Hypnosis Rewires the Brain and Reduces Pain 13:00 Self-Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation and Habit Change 20:00 Hypnosis vs. Meditation 26:00 The Reveri Self-Hypnosis App 33:00 Brain Science Behind Hypnosis 38:00 Using Hypnosis for Anxiety, Phobias, and Pain 47:00 Final Thoughts and Dr. Spiegel's Mission What would change if you stopped relying on willpower alone and started using your brain's own hidden tools for healing and growth? If you've been feeling stuck and aren't sure why, my What's Holding You Back? Quiz can help you uncover the hidden patterns, beliefs, or behaviors that might be silently sabotaging your progress. It's a quick, eye-opening way to gain clarity and take the first step forward. And let's stay connected beyond the podcast - I'm sharing new tools and insights every week on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. If this episode sparked a question or an idea you'd like me to cover in the future, I'd love to hear from you. Let's talk! xoxo, Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby Growing Self P.S. Before we wrap up, I want to thank the sponsor of today's episode, Headway. We've been talking about the power of self-hypnosis to rewire your mind, and for me, reading is another way I open myself up to new perspectives. But life is busy, and I don't always have the time to curl up with a full book. That's why I love Headway. It takes the best books on psychology, personal growth, and beyond, and distills them into bite-sized insights I can actually fit into my day. I use it every morning, and it's such a simple way to keep growing. And the best part? You can save 25% when you go to makeheadway.com/lhs and use code LHS. This sermon addresses the pervasive fear of standing out and the resulting tendency to compromise one's convictions, drawing parallels to Peter's denial of Christ and the need for bold witness in a world increasingly hostile to the gospel. It emphasizes that fear can paralyze believers, hindering the proclamation of truth and leading to a culture of silence, while highlighting the transformative power of embracing a courageous stance, even amidst opposition, and magnifying Christ in a hurting world, ultimately urging listeners to overcome 'square peg phobia' and embrace their calling to boldly share the message of salvation.

Meet Rosie, who wanted to share her story even though she's still in the thick of it all and is a beautiful reminder that you don't need a happy ending to inspire others, sometimes sharing the messy middle is exactly what someone else needs to hear. Rosie thought she'd be a young mum but found herself starting her fertility journey at 28. After a heartbreaking chemical pregnancy and feeling left behind while friends had babies easily, Rosie discovered she had PCOS and wasn't ovulating regularly. From her needle phobia (shoutout to her amazing mother-in-law who does all her injections!) to unexpected parathyroid complications that threw a major curveball into her plans, Rosie's path has been anything but straightforward. Just when IVF was underway, high calcium levels revealed enlarged parathyroids requiring not one, but TWO surgeries - including the discovery of a rare fifth parathyroid! She's navigated failed OI cycles, learned the hard way about IVF expectations vs reality, and is now banking embryos with her eyes on the prize.  Thanks for sharing Rosie

In midlife, women are often handed diets disguised as wellness. More ways to stay young, stay thin, stay "timeless."Debra Benfield, RDN, joins me for a conversation that sits right at the intersection of diet culture, anti-fatness, and anti-aging. Together we talk about how these forces converge in midlife—often making women particularly vulnerable to disordered eating and harmful messaging at exactly the stage when we deserve peace, rest, and joy. Some of the things we get into…* Perimenopause and menopause diet culture messages* Why aging creates heightened vulnerability to diet and wellness culture* The impact of stress and restrictive eating on longevity* Mid-life marketing of disordered eating advice* Wrinkles, Botox, and the skin-care industry* The tyranny of the “belly fat” narrative* How wellness culture capitalizes on our fear of aging and death* Whether strength training is part of the anti-aging conversation* The ways ableism, sexism, and agism collide in media* How to navigate fear-mongering messages about food, weight, and health* What we can do to reclaim our time and energy and powerThis is an episode about reclaiming our power and time from the industries profiting off our insecurities. About saying no to being sold “youth in a bottle” and yes to embracing the fullness of who we are—wrinkles, softness, wisdom, and all.Debra has helped hundreds of women heal their relationship with food and their bodies over her 35-year career as a Registered Dietitian. She specializes in the prevention and treatment of disordered eating, and brings her passion, expertise, and lived experience to the intersection of pro-aging and body liberation work. Deb's work is rooted in helping clients recognize internalized ageism and end it, dismantle internalized diet culture and fatphobia, see midlife and beyond as a time of Emergence, nourish their bodies to support vitality and aging, and develop a respectful partnership with their bodies.Support the show: Enjoying this podcast? We'll talk about: The fears that keep us saying “yes” when we want to say “no” The myths we've been taught about boundaries and relationships Why boundaries are about action as much as they are about words How to set healthy boundaries with yourself first—and why that's the key to holding them with others A short guided reflection to help you identify one internal boundary you can start practicing today If you've been feeling drained, resentful, or guilty about saying no, this episode will help you shift the way you think about boundaries so they feel less like walls and more like doors you control.   References from this episode: Parents Magazine study on accepting unwanted invitations: https://www.parents.com/why-saying-no-is-good-for-your-mental-health-8415963 Stanford Student Affairs research on boundaries strengthening relationships: https://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/how-life-treeting-you-importance-of-boundaries 2020 study on relational boundaries and enforcement: https://self-compassion.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Luchner-and-Snyder-2020-The-Importance-of-Flexible-Relational-Boundaries-.pdf Mental Health Center on boundaries and burnout: https://www.mentalhealthctr.com/boundaries-and-mental-health Dr. Kristin Neff's self-compassion research: https://self-compassion.org/the-three-elements-of-self-compassion-2   Resources Mentioned: Better Than Before Breast Cancer Life Coaching Membership: https://www.thebreastcancerrecoverycoach.com/lifecoaching Creating a Life You Love in 168 Hours a Week: https://www.thebreastcancerrecoverycoach.com/168-hours-sp   Let's Connect! Ah, adulthood—the never-ending escape room with no clues, no key, and someone yelling “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” in the background. In this season finale of All the Feelings: Adulting, Pete and Tommy break down one of the biggest lies we've ever told ourselves: that one day, magically, we would become Real Adults™. Spoiler: we do not. As far as our research has demonstrated, no one does. We're all still wondering how to reheat pizza without judgment. This week, we confront the myth of generational superiority, from Gen X's latchkey nihilism to Gen Z's emotionally stoic eye contact, and the deep, soul-sucking silence of the millennial pause. Why do Boomers look so confident while setting their routers on fire? Why does Gen Alpha speak only in sound effects? Why are we, Gen X, the most stressed-out and financially unprepared sandwich in the buffet line of existence? So it's anecdotes, slang trivia, a breakdown of eye-contact etiquette, and a dash of Lord of the Flies (plus its real-life, wholesome Tongan counterpoint) this week as we ask the central question: what if nobody knows what they're doing and that's… actually the point? Whether you're prepping your taxes or debating whether mozzarella sticks count as a coping mechanism (they do), we invite you to put down the measuring stick and pick up that diploma, because you're already here—and you're already doing it.Congratulations. Classicism and Other Phobias (Princeton University Press, 2025) shows how the concept of “classicism” lacks the capacity to affirm the aesthetic value of Black life and asks whether a different kind of classicism—one of insurgence, fugitivity, and emancipation—is possible. Engaging with the work of Sylvia Wynter and other trailblazers in Black studies while drawing on his own experiences as a Black classicist, Dan-el Padilla Peralta situates the history of the classics in the racial and settler-colonialist settings of early modern and modern Europe and North America. He argues that immortalizing ancient Greek and Roman authors as “the classical” comes at the cost of devaluing Black forms of expression. Is a newfound emphasis on Black classicism the most effective counter to this phobia? In search of answers, Padilla Peralta ranges from the poetry of Juan de Castellanos to the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois and paintings by contemporary artists Kehinde Wiley and Harmonia Rosales. Based on the prestigious W.E.B. Du Bois Lectures delivered at Harvard University, Classicism and Other Phobias draws necessary attention to the inability of the classics as a field of study to fully cope with Blackness and Black people. Death! That thing we pretend we'll deal with later, even though “later” is very much someone else's problem. This week, Pete and Tommy dive headfirst into the gloriously unsexy topic of postmortem administration. Not grief. Not funeral playlists. The actual hellscape of what happens when you suddenly have to explain to Costco that your dad no longer needs a membership because, well, he's gone to the big food court in the sky.In part one, Tommy reflects on “stuff”—the knickknacks, photos, and inexplicable oven mitt collections we leave behind. He shares his strategies for helping friends confront the emotional paralysis of legacy clutter, including the deeply rational rule: no landscapes unless they're breathtaking, and no tuna casserole recipes unless they're really different. In part two, Pete takes us on a bureaucratic rollercoaster through the modern administrative afterlife: joint credit cards that implode, death certificates that cost a fortune, and the absolutely vital necessity of a password manager for your aging parents (seriously, do this now). He makes the case for creating a “digital death file,” so your loved ones don't have to hack into your Apple account to cancel Hulu while you're ghostbathing.Plus: a brief but oddly moving tribute to 17th-century haberdasher John Graunt, who basically invented epidemiology by accident while counting plague victims and also possibly ribbons. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll immediately back up your two-factor authentication.

Welcome to a very special episode of All the Feelings, brought to you by REM sleep, tennis elbow, and the visceral horror of trying to put on socks like you're still in your 30s.This week, Pete and Tommy are pulling a two-for-one special: first, they dive into the dreamscape of adult anxiety—why our nighttime brains love to drop us in college final exams we never studied for and why Tommy keeps losing his car in a parking garage that exists only in the astral plane. Then, they shift to the nighttime betrayals of the body: the mysterious transformation from human being to fragile pile of orthopedic complaints, where simply “sleeping” can result in injuries typically reserved for Olympic gymnastics.Along the way, we get hot tips from Tommy's therapist (shout-out to Bonnie!), dream science from the BBC, and Pete's personal musculoskeletal origin story—which involves surprise vertebra fusion, leg-length inequality, and an orthotic insert named Steve. There's also a powerful case made for the humble foam roller, a pony running off with Tommy's Mazda, and a rare Greek myth about moon-gazing lovers that ends, predictably, in a curse. If you've ever woken up more injured than you were when you went to bed, if you've ever texted your group chat just to be out-sympathied by someone who dislocated their shoulder sneezing, or if you've ever been haunted by the ghost of your own plantar fascia, this one's for you.Support the show at allthefeelings.fun and become a Feeling Friend today—for early episodes, bonus content, and a front-row seat to Pete's ever-expanding sneaker collection.

There comes a time in every adult's life when you look at your parents and think, “Wait, are you… dating?” And suddenly, the woman who once grounded you for not using a coaster is fielding calls from a man probably named Art who knew her in the sixth grade and now rides a bicycle suspiciously close to her begonias. In this week's episode of All the Feelings, Pete watches in emotional 4K as his recently widowed mother begins navigating the uncertain terrain of late-in-life romance. There are awkward phone calls, vintage flirting, and—somehow—tool borrowing. Meanwhile, Tommy explores the slow-motion wonder and quiet stew of trying to travel anywhere with aging parents, from the battlefield that is airport security to the glacial crawl of choosing produce. We talk role confusion, emotional gatekeeping, and the surprising revelation that your parents might be the actual ride you were rushing past. Also: a diamond heist pulled off by British grandpas, the dangers of amusement park pizza, and the secret power of a well-timed smile. This is an episode about love, loss, patience, power poses, and what happens when your mom becomes the heartthrob of the neighborhood. Welcome back to All The Feelings, the podcast where adulthood means pretending you know how to say sorry and hoping lasagna can fix emotional devastation. This week, Pete and Tommy dissect the modern apology: why “I'm sorry if you were offended” is a disaster, and how real apologies require actual specificity, remorse, and the superhuman courage to say, “Yeah, I messed up.”Then, Pete shares what happens when life hits hard—specifically, the loss of his father—and how sometimes the only thing that makes a dent in the pain is a well-timed pizza, not a well-worded condolence. Turns out, nobody teaches you how to support a grieving friend, and “Let me know if you need anything” is about as helpful as an escape room with no exits.
