The last few words from the cross give us a glimpse of the extent of the Lord’s suffering, as well as His total trust in the Father. It will help us as we study the account of crucifixion to allow a graphic image to form in our minds. As we meditate on these things, our appreciation ought to be deepened knowing just how much the Savior went through to redeem our souls.
Jesus time on the cross is an example of complete submission to the will of the Father. He experienced a painful and humiliating death. Just hours before the Lord prayed earnestly that the cup would pass from Him, but it was not to be. He was obedient to the Father and, for it, was crowned as Lord of lords and King of kings. Similarly, God requires our submission to His will. It can be painful and humiliating at times. We may pray for deliverance, but not realize it. Even so, we must continue to trust in God and be mindful of the reward that awaits for our obedience.
We see tender moments in the life of Christ, like when He wept at Lazarus’ tomb. One of the most poignant is when He spoke to His mother while He hung on the cross. His actions at that moment in time are a great example for us to follow as we face trials in our lives.
“Today you will be with Me in Paradise.” This is one of the most comforting statements Jesus ever made and it was done while He was suffering immensely. It comes from an account in the Bible that is frequently misused, that is, the thief on the cross. We want to study this account from Luke 23 and notice how the thief was saved and examine common misconceptions in this 2ndlesson on “Words From The Cross.”
What did you say the last time you were in terrible circumstances experiencing emotional or physical pain, with people attacking you, going through misery? Words of: Hatred and anger Revenge Regret and hopelessness Blasphemy against God Jesus went through more pain and suffering than we will ever know when He was on the cross. Yet, He maintained the right attitude and had compassion, even for His tormentors. In this episode we begin a series looking at Words spoken by Jesus From The Cross. We will consider these one at a time, beginning with “Father, Forgive them for they, for they do not know what they do.”
Gideon is one of five judges mentioned in Hebrews 11. He was not a perfect man (Judges 8:27). However, he leaned on God for help and did what God commanded. His faith is why he is listed in the hall of fame of faith in Hebrews and why we ought to study his life. We will notice lessons, including: God gives evidence and assurance We must tear down the idols The battle is the Lord’s We must stand in the gap
Jesus refused to become an earthly king when the Jews tried to make Him one (John 6:15). The people were seeking the physical – this world – blessings and benefits. They were following Him to fill their bellies – they were carnal. The Lord, however, pointed them to the manna from heaven – the Bread of Life. There are a few key points we want to get out of this second study from John 6: • How men come to Him • We must fully partake of Jesus • Many are offended by the Lord’s teaching
Did you know the Jews tried to make Jesus their king (John 6:15)? Yet, we know they ended up putting Him on the cross. Why did they want to make Him their king and why did He refuse? We will find the answers to these questions in the account of Jesus’ feeding of the 5,000. We will also see who Jesus is and what it takes to follow Him.
Jonah is one of the most fascinating events recorded in Bible history, let alone world history. He is the only man known to survive being swallowed by a fish, stuck in its belly for three days, then puked up on dry land. His preaching was powerful enough to bring an entire city of Gentiles to repentance, but was angered that the Lord spared them. Jonah is no different than us and can teach us some hard lessons. We will see how he resisted God’s will, repented of his sin, then resented God’s mercy. To learn more about this episode and to sign up to receive a daily Bible affirmation go to BibleInfo.co.
Have you ever asked someone a question only to be displeased with the answer? Maybe you approached a friend or family member expecting one type of answer, but got another. So, you rejected the answer… and later regretted it. This is what happened to a wealthy young man who asked Jesus a question about eternal life. He did not like the answer and turned away. No doubt, that young man came to regret his attitude toward the Lord. We want to examine this account in Mark 10 and learn not only about the good character of this young man, but also to see what he lacked and what it truly takes to inherit eternal life. Did you know God loved and worked to bless Gentiles in the Old Testament? We tend to focus on His dealings with Israel, but there are many accounts of His interaction with Gentiles and the blessings He bestowed on them. One of the most amazing accounts is in 2 Kings 5 where Naaman is healed of his leprosy. The story is rich with drama and filled with lessons for us. Satan attacked Jesus in the wilderness immediately after John baptized Him (Matt. 3:13-17). Luke states that there were 40 days of temptation, followed by three specific ones that were very challenging (Luke 4:1, 2). The Lord’s temptation was for our benefit. He set the example of how to overcome Satan’s schemes and helps us relate to Him. Or, to put it another way, it allows us to see and accept that He knows exactly what we face. We will see in this episode that (1) Jesus was tempted like us (2) He overcame temptation by using God’s word (3) Jesus received everything Satan offered, but according to God’s will, not the devil’s devising. Every generation and nation needs a hero. People long for a champion. The timid, feckless, and fearful are despised… or worse, ignored. This is true for secular as well as sacred causes. Some appreciate and praise the hero; others envy and criticize. This what happened to David. Before David became king, he was a hero to a nation in distress; a brave champion willing to take a bold stand. His life was certainly not without fault, but he is still described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Sam. 13:14). In this episode we want to examine the event that “made” David; that which put him in the national spotlight and cemented his reputation for his generation and beyond – slaying Goliath. Men and women of faith from ancient times inspire us today. They are honored by the Holy Spirit by being put into the sacred text and held up as examples for the ages. These people from long ago faced incredible difficulties and brutal treatment. Yet, they displayed great faith and remained humble, obedient servants of God. We want to examine an account of three young men who “quenched the violence of fire”: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in Daniel 3. They were captives in the land of Babylon who faced pressure to compromise their faith or face the consequence – the burning fiery furnace. What comes to mind when you think of a preacher or minister? Many picture a very mild man who wears “Mr. Roger” sweaters and has a sweet disposition – one who makes friends with everyone he meets. They don’t think of someone who lives alone, dresses in rough clothing, and offends many of the people who hear him preach. Yet, this is exactly what John the baptizer was. A man that lived in the desert, away from most people, and preached stern lessons exposing sin and called on people to repent. In this episode, we are going to see what this type of preaching led for John – his death. To learn more about this episode and to sign up to receive a daily Bible affirmation go to BibleInfo.co.
The steadfast faith of Daniel cannot be overemphasized. He is a man that was consistent in his is devotion to God and, because of this, was able to face the prospect of a horrific death with firm resolve. The account of Daniel being thrown into the lion’s den, is not merely a children’s story. It really wasn’t written for children primarily, but for Jews living in pagan captivity. It was written to give them the courage they needed to stand fast in their faith no matter what pressure or consequences they were to face. We can learn many valuable lessons from this account including: (1) the fault of faithfulness; (2) The necessity and benefit of daily service to God; (3) The impact we can have on those in power by maintaining an unwavering commitment to God. The miracles recorded in the Bible are designed to create faith (John 20:30, 31). Those performed by Jesus show us His divinity and power. They confirm His word and drive out doubt. The account of Jesus walking on water is one of many miraculous events that ought to instill us with confidence and strengthen our conviction that He is, indeed, the divine Son of God. In this episode we will go through the account of Jesus walking on water and observe a few lessons including: (1) He sees us when we are in trouble; (2) We must focus on Christ, not chaos; (3) We don’t need a boast to survive the storm. Peter wrote that he and others saw the majesty of Jesus revealed on the holy mountain (2 Peter 1:16-18). This event is recorded in Matthew, Mark, and Luke to provide evidence that Jesus is the divine Son of God. In our study, we want to look at this account in some detail and draw out three additional lessons: (1) We must follow Christ; (2) There is life after death; (3) there will be a resurrection. In this episode we will examine Genesis 3 to see how Adam and Eve were tempted by the devil and turned their back on God. We will note three lessons in particular: (1) The Commission of Sin; (2) The Consequences of Sin; (3) The Cleansing of Sin. Esther exemplifies a great servant of God. She lived in exciting times in foreign kingdom. She went from obscurity to queen of the world’s superpower and displayed true beauty in her pure character. Esther faced great challenges, but put her faith in God and bravely risked her life for her people. She is a heroine of faith and a role model for all young women (and others). Not only did she show devotion to God, but artfully influenced those in power and inspired a generation of God’s people. Truly remarkable and a story better than any Disney princess fairytale. In this episode we will conclude our study of Esther’s life as we see her step forward again to help God’s people. We will examine three key lessons: (1) man’s law vs. God’s; (2) how we must participate in our own deliverance; (3) memorials help remind us of God’s immense mercy and love. Esther was called on to risk it all for the sake of others. Overcame her reluctance – fear of death – by placing her faith in God. Though she did not know it going into it, there was a great reward that came from the risk she took… but it wasn’t a risk at all. As we study the story of Esther in chapters 5-7, we are going to see that pride goes before destruction, God’s providence overrules in the kingdoms of men as well as individual lives, and the great value of taking action. Living a life faithful to God has never been easy. Satan has attacked man from the beginning, making it as difficult as possible to serve the Lord. Whether he makes us feel foolish or attempts to intimidate us, the devil’s goal is to prevent us from having fellowship with God or helping His people. In the Bible story of Esther we see more than one example of someone who stood up regardless of the pressure. Disney and Hollywood have treated us to multiple stories about rags to riches; about how a young, unseen girl or boy persevered through adversity and rose to a place of praise and admiration. And, nearly every young girl has a dream of being a princess; boys a prince. They not only want to enjoy a palace, fancy clothes, and being served, but usually at the root of this is the desire to be respected, loved, adored. The Bible account of Esther is a real-life “princess” story or, more correctly, story of a majestic queen. Rather, we are talking about a situation where there was a very real possibility of being killed. There are various groups of people we read about in the New Testament with which we are not all that familiar. It’s no wonder, though, because we are 2,000 years removed from them and it was a totally different culture. Understanding these groups and what they believed, however, will help us better comprehend God’s word and the interactions they had with men and women of faith.
