On today's episode of Renew Your Mind, Senior Pastor Paul Gruenberg, Associate Pastor Jeremy Touroo, retired Pastor Barry Sweet, Contemporary Worship Leader/ Director of Family & Youth Jordan Kettlewell and moderator Dana Hall continue the series diving into the "Hard Sayings Of Jesus." Today's episode will be referring to when Jesus tells the disciples that many will desert him. This is of course a hard teaching that the disciples were confused by. The scripture reference can be found in John 6:48-66. This is a multi-part series exploring more difficult topics or things Jesus said in the Bible. Thanks for listening and we pray this podcast encourages you and helps grow your walk in the Lord! God bless!
The Authority of Jesus: Many modern people object to the ethical teachings of Christianity, whether it be about sexuality, gender, money, forgiveness, or something else. However, if Jesus is who he claimed to be, he has authority over every aspect of life. The most important question is not "Do you agree with his teaching?" but "Who do you think Jesus is?" Recorded on Sep 17, 2023, on John 5:16-47 by Pastor David Parks. (Apologies for the audio issues!) Finding Life in Jesus' Name is a sermon series on the gospel according to John in the Bible. Have you ever felt unsatisfied with your life? Or, even when things were going well, something was still missing? Many people sense there must be something more. But what?? John, one of the closest friends of Jesus, believed that Jesus came into the world so that we may have life and have it to the full. Jesus turned John's life upside down, and John claims this new life — marked by God's power, presence, and purpose — is available for all who believe. Sermon Transcript We're going through the gospel according to John in a series called Finding Life in Jesus' Name. And today, we're picking back up in John 5. If you missed any of the messages so far, you can always go back and watch or listen online. You can watch on YouTube or on the church app or listen to the audio podcast wherever you listen to podcasts. But today, Jesus addresses a big elephant in the room (and maybe this is something you've wondered about, too): where does Jesus get the authority to say/do everything that he says/does? Or, to put a finer point on it, what gives him the right to tell us what to do? That's usually the problem, isn't it? We don't mind other people saying or doing things unless it affects us or makes demands of us. Very often, when I talk with people in the world about the Christian faith, the objections to Christianity have nothing to do with the person/work of Jesus. There seems to be a general acceptance today or even appreciation of Jesus, even among people who would never set foot in a church. However, the objections often center on the morals/ethics of Christianity, of what is taught to be right or wrong according to the Bible. Whether it's the sexual ethic of Christianity or its teaching on gender or money or forgiveness or something else. Many people hear parts of these teachings and think, I could never be part of that. But here's the deal: if Jesus is who he claims to be, then he has the authority, he has every right, to tell us how we ought to live. But if he isn't who he claims to be, then nothing he says matters. But this isn't a modern thing. It was no different in Jesus' own day. When people met him or heard his teaching, or saw his ministry, he was constantly asked, “Where do you get the authority to be saying/doing these things?” How do you think Jesus responded? If you have a Bible/app, please take it and open it to John 5:16. This is a longer passage, but we'll unpack it as we go. John 5:16-18 (NIV), “16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” Let's pause here. So, our passage picks up right where we left off last week with the healing of the man at Bethesda. Jesus was in Jerusalem during a busy festival time when he healed a man who couldn't walk for thirty-eight years. This was the third of seven miraculous signs in John's gospel, and it was a sign of the power of Jesus not only to heal but also to restore what had been lost. He restored this man's mobility and so much more. Amazing, right? But there's a problem. Jesus had healed this man on the Sabbath, which was supposed to be a day to rest and enjoy the blessings of God...

This week's focus from Mark 1:29-39 reveals a number of things about Jesus that are helpful for us, both as people loved by God and people called to be involved in revealing His love in the world. Jesus has care and concern for individuals, whilst at the same time he has care and concern for many people. This week in worship we will explore how God is caring for individuals in our life and caring for many people in the world. And why such care is often different to others who try to be carers. The sermon is part of our Kingdom of God Series and is from the text of Matthew 14. Jesus performed miracles of healing and of feeding his people followed by walking on water (and causing Peter to walk on water). What does this text teach us about Jesus? Many things. One of the premiere things is that it teaches us that the Lord Jesus is YHWH among us. He is God, the true God, among us.
Am I qualified to tell someone about Jesus? Many times we lift up missionaries, pastors, and priests to an elevated status, as if they are the only ones fit for the job of preaching the Gospel. But God's way is different - he doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called! Listen to Colin preach from John chapter 4, where Jesus chooses an unlikely candidate as His very first missionary.
Are you ready for the day that your life on the earth ends and you stand face to face with Jesus? Many of the things God told us would happen in Revelations are on the doorstep of our lives even now, meaning Christ’s return is growing ever closer. Are we ready for it?
Big War has begun, who's ready? WHAT is Jesus? Many worlders are amazed at the horror. They can see that is it all SPIRITUAL.

If you say you are a Christian, are you living for Jesus- Many who claim to be Christians don't anticipate, or are not prepared to face persecution. Moreover, fear is a liar and tries to make Christians live timidly rather than boldly. Fear wants to scare you into not living for Jesus. but Jesus has called His people to unspeakable glory- a glory that follows suffering. He has confirmed the reality of this coming glory by the near fulfilment of His prophecy regarding the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. If that prophesy is fulfilled, then the other prophesies will be fulfilled. The fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 was a dreadful overthrow. And the cause was the sin of the Jews- their rejection of the Messiah. It is far more dreadful to reject Jesus than to live for Him. If you are afraid to submit to Christ, what are you afraid of- The destruction of Jerusalem was a warning to you not to end up in the same destruction. That is worth being afraid of.
The real Jesus encountered identity issues. Some saw only a carpenter’s son. Others saw a fake messiah who had a demon. To others, He was an enigma. What did they see and hear? How did that picture fit into the frame in their mind about what God might be up to in Jesus? Many rejected Him and dismissed his claim to be God and “one with the Father,” as preposterous. For some, his miracles proved Jesus was in league with the devil. But one of his faithful followers, John, told us that “to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” John 1:12
Jesus refused to become an earthly king when the Jews tried to make Him one (John 6:15). The people were seeking the physical – this world – blessings and benefits. They were following Him to fill their bellies – they were carnal. The Lord, however, pointed them to the manna from heaven – the Bread of Life. There are a few key points we want to get out of this second study from John 6: • How men come to Him • We must fully partake of Jesus • Many are offended by the Lord’s teaching
Love does! What does it mean to love like Jesus? Many times we can get caught in making sure we are doing the RIGHT thing instead of having our focus on Jesus. We end up doing things from a selfish or prideful standpoint instead of from a pure heart.
In this episode, we look the question: Did God turn his back on Jesus? Many preachers believe that God is so holy that he can't look on sin. Is that the case? Is it true that while Jesus was on the cross, God had to turn his back on him? Tune in to find out! Are you certain you will spend eternity with Jesus? Many people, including those who profess to be Christians, will answer that question, “Well, I hope so.” Because of God’s grace, we can know so! Today’s message from Scot Pollok, lead pastor of Faith Bible Church, may be the most important message you will ever hear since you first believed in Christ for salvation.
What was the human personality of Jesus? Many say that He was both extrovert and introvert...but...why? In this episode, I explore personality types in the church and possibilty of Jesus Himself.

Why do you follow Jesus? Many of us follow because we want Jesus to change our circumstances, to work a miracle in our jobs, families or bodies. But Jesus’ aim isn’t to improve our lives. Rather, he seeks to invite us into something new. If we...
Who killed Jesus? Why did He die? Who is Jesus? Many of our personal and nationwide debates in the big scheme of things mean little. But these questions about a man who lived two thousand years ago stir deep passions and they should. Let’s look at Matthew’s passion narrative and ask him to answer our questions about who did it and why.
What has your pursuit of Jesus been like? Would you say that while you're pursuing Jesus, you'd love to go deeper with Jesus? Many want to go deeper with Jesus but many just don't seem to be able to accomplish this. The deeper life seems almost mythical. Yet in Scripture the deeper life is a reality. Not only is it a reality, it is God's will. What does deeper look like? How do we get there? That's what this sermon is about.
John 1:35-51. Do you have doubts about God? Are you unsure about various aspects of Christianity? Do you worry about what the future would hold if you truly followed Jesus? Many allow these thoughts to prevent them from church and faith. But Jesus isn’t worried about them. To those people—us—Jesus extends an invitation: come and see.

Bob pulls back the curtain on executive searches, then talks about his new book on talking with God. Bio (Full Bio): Bob Beaudine has led searches for some of the most high profile athletic directors and head coaches in the country. He is also a bestselling author, having written The Power of Who back in 2009, and he has a new book out right now titled 2 Chairs: The Secret That Changes Everything. Interview: Peel back the curtain a bit for us on what a typical high profile head football coaching search looks like. Clients hires us exclusively to find a particular job that they want (usually top five or six jobs in the organization) Meet with owner/president about what they are really looking for First role is as management consultant to figure out where the organization is going; what success looks like Also provide confidentiality The candidates for most of the jobs are not actively seeking. They are doing well and are happy at their current role Search firm has to convince them why it makes sense to make a move The other piece is these people can't afford to put their name in for a job and lose/not get it. Alums/fans/sponsors would be upset if they found out the candidate was looking. Job is IDd, then job description, then small committee, then identify the top 20 who could do it, get it down to five for interviews, and then make recommendations of the top three or four and then help in the negotiation. Everything is done clandestine in order to not lose any candidates because it goes public. What are a few things that you see regularly from job candidates that are major mistakes? That you just want to be in a job You just want your name up, but not really interested in Doing it for flattering, not for love Consider why you want the job and will it be one you can see yourself doing long-term Let's talk about your first book The Power of Who. What is the premise and why did you write that book? When looking for goals/dreams, how can I get there when I don't know someone WHO – the people who matter most Networking today is faceless and it isn't working. Sending generic letters and buckets of resumes will not work. You should stop. First thought should be your own network (100/40 strategy) 100 – family/close friends/people who already know you and want what's best for you 40 – what it is you want in life – Most people don't go for their dreams because they don't believe their family and friends could possibly know people that could help them What if God gave you people to help you in ways you never imagined? Strategically given to you to help you find that place in life you dream about? You can get your dream, but not by going to someone you have never met and who doesn't know you and asking them to do something for you. That makes no sense. If you want something you never had, you're going to have to do some things you've never done Try Power of Who Who are the people in your life? Write them down What do you want to do? Write it down? 87% of all jobs are introduced to people by friends (references, referrals) 80% of country not using their talent; 69% believe bad day at the beach is better than a good day at work; 60% is getting divorced We need a better mechanism than cold calls Start with friends (12, 3 close and 1 best works pretty well – Jesus) Many people believe current circumstances disqualify them from their dream. Stop that! You can get your dream; need to quiet your mind and think about some of these things. (Daniel) Common issue for people is they want to do things on their own. Parents aren't going to do the job for you; they aren't qualified to do the job Two parts of our brains and they drop endorphins that make me happy – gratitude and giving So if I ask you for help, would you help? Of course. When you let others help you, those people are getting a buzz! And if you try to do things all alone you're stopping people from that joy! You were created one cup short of greatness. With other people we're great. Together, two are better than one. Let's finish by talking about your new book 2 Chairs: The Secret that Changes Everything Why did you decide to write this book, and what is the premise? All great subjects come to moments in your life when you're asking better questions. Lots of why questions. At the end of his junior year in college, was asking questions about career, finding a wife, etc. His mom gave him the best advice. She said she doesn't have the answers, but know who does. Three questions: Does God know your situation? Yes, and also God wants us to know he knows People think God only has a few phone lines for 7 billion people, and he's only paying attention to ISIS, major disasters, etc. No, he can talk to all of us at once! He's not bothered by you, not mad he made you. Is this too hard for Him to handle? God is not overwhelmed by your trouble; really comforting when the trouble is big There are some problems in life that can be overwhelming, but they aren't for Him. Does God have a plan for you? Two Chairs – one for you and one for God Not the same as reading the bible or praying This is having a personal relationship with him Why would God say renew your mind daily if he really meant just Sundays? (Romans 12:1-2) Why would he say ask, seek and knock if he didn't have something to say? (Matthew 7:7-8) Why would he say seek him first and all these other things are added if he wanted you to do it seventh? (Matthew 6:33) So set up one chair for you and one for God; do this in your house (literal; not mental exercise) You get to talk for one minute and he gets to talk for four Common approaches Treat God a bit like an appellate judge Focused only on reading, praying, etc. – not spending time with him like a friend. Not providing a space for us to hear him; all we do is inform him. Why would God say “let those who have ears hear” and “Be still and know that I am God” if he didn't want to say something. Numbers 11:17 “I will come down and speak with you.” Jeremiah 29:11 “I have plans for you…” He wants to talk to us! Proverbs 1:23 “If you would have heard my rebuke, I would have shared all my thoughts and given you all my counsel.” Even 5 minutes in the presence of God changes everything. You reference the Who's on First Abbott and Costello routine when describing how we confuse the subject of talking and listening to God. Explain that to us. They took something that was simple and made it confusing, just like we do with talking to God. He's always wanted to talk just like you and I are talking. We run past first base where he is; he wants to talk with us. We're on second base saying “what?”…we keep running and we're on third saying “I don't know.” What if God had plans for you today? His word says he does. The greatest people he has interviewed have said these three things that changed their life. They have an assignment, purpose and a destiny Someone told them they believed in them Activated it What is our assignment? People fall into three buckets Believers – trying to do this Seekers – people who hope it works Skeptics – think it is fantastical Challenge to all three – if there's a one percent chance if you set up two chairs that God would show up, would you go? All three groups answer yes. Why wait to talk to jobs about our dreams and goals? If he is real, he must reveal himself and tell us! It has to be now! 5 minutes is all it takes – four for him one for you. He will meet you tomorrow; he will not be bothered by anything in your past. He is going to sit down and talk with you. Been doing this 40 years. You get to meet with the king of kings; your creator! Will it be an audible voice is a common question. Not that relevant. When your spouse calls you on the phone, do you need to ask who it is? No because you know her voice. God says “my sheep no my voice." What is the 80/20 rule? One minute of you talking, saying good morning and give him your trouble. God can do amazing things through you; no one listening that he doesn't know your situation. You may want to be alone and this is trouble for him, but it's not. It's not overwhelming for him. Four minutes of just listening. Comes in lots of ways. God has amazing capabilities. He's the master ninja. Example. P. 32 – “When you allow others to teach, mentor and manage you, you are seen as a person with great leadership capability.” What do you mean by that? It is so humble to sit at two chairs when the other is empty. You will seem foolish by most. But it's the King. Power of Who Story about Steven Spielberg Taking the director coffee and picking up laundry on set Associate producer doesn't show up one day, and Spielberg gets hired and gets his start. If you were in the garage with Bill Gates when he started his company (12 stayed 4 left; the 12 are billionaires), what would you have done? Must humble yourself to listen. These are keys to success; you don't have to be seen and all of a sudden you may find yourself where you want to be. What is a WHO friend? Goal of friendship is to be able to sing the song of your heart, so when you don't know the words I can sing it back to you. If you want a WHO friend, be one first! But you probably have some already. Parents, family. There's great counsel in the people God gave you. Mentors, teachers, parents, coaches, life coaches. They help you on the path. If you get detoured, you're not in the consolation round. There is no plan B It's plan A, detour, plan A detour. God doesn't make mistakes. He uses these times to show up and show off on your behalf. Do you resolve in following Jesus? Many a times, we have not seriously considered why we follow Jesus, or are we following Jesus wholeheartedly as we claim ourselves to be? A person who wants to follow Jesus is one who comes to realize that there's no other way - salvation comes through Jesus Christ. Are we often hinging on the many things we can see such as financial security, people's love, recognition, subconsciously putting our hope in them, only to find ourselves entering more desperation and woes? Through this message, may we once again confirm the reason of our faith in Jesus Christ, pin down the distractions that dilute away our focus on following Him, so that we can follow Christ resolutely and not look back. Following Jesus is not an one off declaration but a daily confession and resolution, for we see that indeed we intensely need to rely on His grace and the renewal through the Holy Spirit to finish our heavenly face.
