In this episode we disuss our concerns and revelations with women's reproductive health. Spring boarding from our 2019 episode about abortion, we are diving deeper into the conversation about women's reproductive health, especially for WOC. If you'd like to listen to that episode we've linked it down below.  _Trigger Warning_ This episode does briefly describes harmful gynecological acts done to women of color. We also briefly mention abortion (not graphic).  This week we want to encourage all Unicorns to share their experience with the healthcare system, especially if it involves reproductive health. We believe by share and/or making space to share these experiences, we can raise awareness for the need of access to reproductive health care and normalize female body functions. In this episode you'll hear the Unicorns discuss: How some people actually celebrate when a girl gets her period.  How the “The Father of Gynecology” tortured WOC for the “advancements” of gynecological health and its impact on the community The correlation between puberty and sexuality  Health Class vs. Sex Education The lack of representation of BIPOC in medical information  The maternity mortality rate for BIPOC women  Intersectionality between race, social class, age and how that affects your medical care How we still feel women's bodies are a mystery The danger in viewing childbirth as routine  We end our show, as always with our Happy Place, hint* - If you're a near sided Arachnophobic, this might not be the happy place for you.  Episode 19: Abortion, a WOC Tale: https://biracialunicorns.pinecast.co/episode/039178af60db40d4/abortion-a-woc-tale More of the History of Gynecology: https://www.history.com/news/the-father-of-modern-gynecology-performed-shocking-experiments-on-slaves Thanks to Josef Scott of Citizens of Tape City for our theme music and Dollipop Art for our podcast artwork - you can find her on instagram @dollipop.art. In this episode we take down one final book for the year from the Unicorn Library's shelves and spend some time discussing Kawai Strong Washburn's debut novel, Sharks in the Time of Saviors. This story follows the Flores family, struggling with the impacts of capitalism and colonialism and signs from the supernatural in 1990s/2000s Hawai'i. We discuss what we've learned from this book; how we relate to the story, themes, and characters; and why we think it's a great read for all unicorns, even if you don't have a connection to Hawai'i. Still on the fence about reading it? Here's a taste of the beautiful language: "I could see him there, the waves and tides and gods dragging him around. But I'm in the water, too, I wanted to say. No one's watching to see if I stay afloat." "How long was I stupid enough to believe we were indestructible? But that's the problem with the present, it's never the thing you're holding, only the thing you're watching, later, from a distance so great the memory might as well be a spill of stars outside a windshield at twilight" We also wrap up the year with our happy places, while Rocking Around the Christmas Tree was not either of our picks, it could be a bridge between the two. We also give a brief taste of what we're looking forward to in the new year after the plugs. Happy new year and we wish you a safe and happy 2022. In this episode we take on a topic brought to us in a listener's email. It's our delight to be answering a listener question this week, and it's all about building bridges between diverse groups both on and off college campuses. Our listener Zoe emailed us about her experience as a Biracial Unicorn and asked us our approach to “woke colleges.” We value these questions deeply on our show because they are very much the back bone as to why Biracial Unicorns exist. So this week we discuss some foundational topics through the lens of the woke college experience. This week you'll hear us discuss: Why this topic is so poignant to Unicorns How “woke-ness” is not a linear journey, nor is it your identity  It is not a mixed person “job” to unite all diverse groups What is diversity anyway? Why can't all BIPOC just “come together”? How shared trauma is not enough to unify diverse groups How shared joy may be the key to building bridges As we end the show, it's all about cozy comforts for this week's Happy Place -hint*, It's all about holiday dysfunctions and nerdy spin-off's.  A special thank you to our listener Zoe who took the time to write in. We truly appreciate it and it's why we do what we do. As always, we welcome questions or topics that our listeners are interested in. In this episode we discuss our dread and concern about climate change while grappling with the concept of climate anxiety. Today on the show we finally express our uneasiness about the environmental state of our world right now. That's right, we are discussing climate change and putting a name to that feeling of doom that comes with worrying for the environment. For our Unicorns out there who are feeling overwhelmed and anxious about our ever warming atmosphere, you are not alone. We encourage those of you listening to THIS episode to also check out an early episode we did where we approach a similar topic, it's linked down below along with an article mentioned in today's episode. In this episode you'll hear: Our thoughts on the Carbon Footprint- Where did this concept come from? Why was it created? And who does it impact? Why it seems white people dominate the environmental field.  How concern BIPOC are about the environment. What does race even have to do with climate change? Climate Anxiety -What is it? What do we do with it?  Does climate anxiety impact white people more?  How addressing white supremacy can ultimately free up an invaluable resource to fight climate change- the resource being POC's.  Who's responsible is it to ultimate deal with climate change? How do we address the staggering issue of climate change in our daily lives? As we end the show we “cool-off” in our Happy Placehint - it's cozy, it's comforting, it's quintessential Dani and Dameca.  https://biracialunicorns.pinecast.co/episode/472d5a16c38e4df3/environmentalism https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/06/03/im-black-climate-scientist-racism-derails-our-efforts-save-planet/ Thanks to Josef Scott of Citizens of Tape City for our theme music and Dollipop Art for our podcast artwork - you can find her on instagram @dollipop.art. Settler-Colonialism

In this episode we explore the huge topic of Settler Colonialism and our own relationships to that system. If you thought we were going to let the fall season continue without an episode about colonialism, then you don't know your Unicorns. This week we start with a land acknowledgment (and in true Unicorn fashion, we have mixed-feelings about land acknowledgments). We then attempt in 60 minutes to summarize the complexity and pervasive topic that is settler-colonialism and it's significance to mixed-race BIPOC.  In this episode you'll hear… What sets settler-colonialism apart from various other types of colonization  Us share the inward battle of the mixed-race existence as a result of colonialism  What are the  “camps” or roles we participate in a settler-colonialists society  Why it's important for you to understand your role in settler-colonialism  If you think you have a Native-American Great-Grandmother, you probably don't… The attempted erasure of Indigenous people  The ongoing byproduct of settlers-colonialism- “one drop rule”, blood quantum, shift in power dynamics within Indigenous people groups Why American society in particular is NOT (and may never be) ready to “decolonize” settler-colonialism.  We bring our show to a close with our Happy Place *hint- it's all about bootylicious TedTalks and Netflix phenomenons.  Check out the work of and give to: Tewa Women United: https://tewawomenunited.org/ways-to-give Pueblo Action Alliance: https://www.puebloactionalliance.org/donate First Nations Community HealthSource: https://www.fnch.org/donate/ Thanks to Josef Scott of Citizens of Tape City for our theme music and Dollipop Art for our podcast artwork - you can find her on instagram @dollipop.art.
