I think many aspiring writers have a juicy family story passed down that they are sure would make a great novel. Our guest this week, Ciera Horton McElroy, had heard stories about her grandfather, a scientist who worked at a plant that produced materials for a hydrogen bomb during the height of the Cold War in the 1960s. That one family story is the jumping off point of her debut novel, a work of historical fiction titled Atomic Family that takes the reader on a journey to an era of burgeoning women's rights, Sears Roebuck fashion, and the suburban American dream. With some good old radiation thrown into the mix. We talk to Ciera about what it was like to be a tourist at a now abandoned hydrogen bomb facility, how writing a little blog at 16 helped her start her own company, and the big differences between living in a state like Florida versus the Midwest. You can find Ciera on her website at www.cieramcelroy.com and on instagram @cierahmcelroy. For show notes for any episode, go to our website at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com. Do you ever read a book and connect so deeply that you can't help but talk about it? This is what this book did to me. Join me in dissecting some of the issues tackled by this story and follow along to see how it helped me understand issues I experienced firsthand growing up. Books can heal; when you feel most alone in the world and like your experiences are so unique no one can understand you, you feel like you are drowning. A story can help you feel validated in your struggles and show you how to overcome your deepest fears, and address some of the most intense issues or experiences you encounter. Reading is powerful, and I wanted to share how I interpret this story. You can purchase the book by using the link below https://www.amazon.com/Not-Your-Perfect-Mexican-Daughter/dp/1524700487/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1667278394&sr=8-1 Or you can check it out at your local library!!!
This week on Under the Radar with Callie Crossley: Is a rising wave of Latino political power in Massachusetts finally representative of the local population? Plus, Puerto Rico is still without power and water more than two weeks after Hurricane Fiona–frustrating Puerto Ricans still not fully recovered from the devastation of Hurricane Maria 5 years ago. And, our guests are learning to embrace Hispanic Heritage Month. All this and more on our Latinx roundtable. Plus: Erika Sanchez's first novel “I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” was a critically acclaimed bestseller. Now the poet/author has followed up with her memoir. In “Crying in the Bathroom” this proud Mexican- American writer chronicles her circuitous path to claiming her talent, and managing her mental health. We're celebrating Hispanic Heritage month with our October selection for “Bookmarked: The Under the Radar Book Club.” Guests: Julio Ricardo Varela, president of Futuro Media Group, co-host of the “In The Thick” podcast, founder of Latino Rebels, and MSNBC opinion columnist. Marcela Garcia, an opinion columnist and associate editor at the Boston Globe. Erika Sanchez is a Mexican-American poet, novelist, and essayist.
We begin today with the Mexican American poet, novelist and essayist, Erika L. Sánchez. Her book, I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is being made into a film. It was a New York Times best selling young adult novel, and a finalist for the National Book Award. Ms. Sánchez is the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Chair, and Writer-in-Residence in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies at DePaul University in Chicago. Her latest book is a fascinating memoir, a collection of essays that chronicles her childhood in a poor immigrant household, through her journey to become a successful writer, and a happily married mother. It's called Crying in the Bathroom: A Memoir. Erika L. Sánchez joins us on Zoom from Chicago…See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The two books featured in this episode are stories examining the difficulties and stressors of being Latino in America. First is I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, which is about a 15-year-old girl who has a contentious relationship with her immigrant parents. Author Erika L. Sánchez explains in conversation with Latino USA's Maria Hinojosa her goal to challenge ideas of Latina perfection. Then we hear from David Bowles, author of They Call Her Fregona, who discusses with Scott Simon the cracks in the Latino community and immigration in pursuit of a better life.
In 2017, author Erika L. Sánchez was making her dreams come true, her young adult novel I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter earning critical acclaim. But even as she rose to fame, Sánchez found herself struggling with her mental health. Her new memoir, Crying in the Bathroom, captures the tension between her public success and her private suffering — and more. Sánchez talks with guest host Anna Sale about sharing some of her darkest moments with readers, caring for her mental health and what she's learned from her personal role model — Lisa Simpson. If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741.You can follow us on Twitter @NPRItsBeenAMin and email us at ibam@npr.org.

On this week's episode of Titillating Talks with Tiphany, I bring you in on an important conversation about minority women and domestic violence that I am having with my good friend, Maida Garcia.Maida helps me to understand the issue of domestic violence and intimate partner abuse from the lens of the minority community. She explains that too many times when a woman of color reports a domestic abuse crime, her reports go ignored. Likewise, when a woman of color goes missing, her disappearance rarely makes the news. We discuss how cultural views & a lens of privilege often creates an environment where women of color are not seen as victims that need to be helped and supported.October is both Domestic Violence Awareness Month & Hispanic Heritage Month. Now is the time to amplify voices of women of color and shine a light on the problem of domestic violence in their community. The following organizations provide support to women of color:Esperanza United- mobilizes Latinas &Latinx communities to end gender-based violenceNational Domestic violence Hotline- Free, confidential help is only a phone call away 24/7BELatina- News, entertainment, lifestyle for Latina'sWomen of Color Network- Centralizes the voices, wellness, and leadership of women of colorTo celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and to immerse yourself in the culture, Maida recommends these books:- Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel-Rain of Gold by Victor Villasenor- The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros-100 years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez-Bless Me Ultima byRudolfo Anaya- Any book written by Isabelle Allende- there are too many good ones to list- Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika Sanchez-Fat Chance Charlie Vega by Crystal Maldonado-Of Women and Salt by Gabriela Garcia-My Broken Language by Quiara Alegria Hudes- Colonize This by Daisy HernandezVictor Rios Ted TalkPlease contact me and let me know what you think of this episode:DM me on InstagramVisit my websiteJoin the Love & Life Membership communityPurchase #selflove merchandiseLet me know what you thought of this episode:DM me on Instagram: @tiphanyKane Come visit my website: www.tiphanykane.comGet your #Selflove merchandise

Poet, novelist and essayist Erika L. Sánchez may have been a National Book Award Finalist, a 2017-2019 Princeton Arts Fellow, a 2019 NEA Literature Fellow and currently the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Chair in the Latin American and Latino Studies Department at DePaul University, but she takes nothing for granted. Growing up in Chicago the child of Mexican immigrant factory workers, she understood early on that not everyone was able to realize their lives' goals. Erika, often feeling like the odd kid out, found new worlds through books and herself through writing. And she was determined to make a place for herself in that world. After a long period of struggle, in 2017 Erika L. Sánchez had the year writers dream of: her debut collection of poetry Lessons on Expulsion was published to glowing reviews as was her YA novel I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter which became a finalist for the National Book Award. In this podcast, Erika talks about her traditional upbringing, her rebellion and her longing to see herself represented in literature (I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter was the book she wanted to read when she was 15) and the joy she finds in her first love—poetry.

BLACK LIVES MATTER. Find out how you can help here and here. In this episode we review I'm Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. ----Trigger Warning- The book we are reviewing this week mentions death, self-harm, suicide, sexual encounters, and rape. Spoiler Alert - In reviewing this book there might be spoilers. You have been warned. A brief summary: Julia is 15, she wants to be a writer, she prefers dark clothing, and reading by herself at family gathering. Julia is smart and wants more out of life and is not afraid to question authority much to the distress of her immigrant parents. Life has not been easy for Julia but at least she had her older sister, the perfect Mexican daughter (and buffer) Olga…that’s until she dead. Now with Olga gone and Julia left to not only deal with her own grief but her parents as well. She slowly pieces together that perhaps she never really knew her sister…maybe she wasn’t perfect. We hope you have your library card ready because the Unicorns are doing a book review this week!! I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, a young adult novel written by Erika L. Sánchez was suggested to us by a listener (thanks Diana). For more information about the author feel free to watch an interview with Erika L. Sánchez linked down below. In this episode we share the importance of reading lecture by POC and the effect that has on our “empathy muscles”. After giving a brief summary (trying not to give away too many spoilers) we crack into our initial thoughts, highlights, themes, characterizations, and are challenges. A few of the theme we discuss are: Greif “Coming of age” Family loyalty Family trauma Mother/Daughter relationship (what makes a “good” Mexican daughter vs. a “bad” Mexican daughter) Mental Health As we close our first book review, we also examine the relationship between Julia and the white characters in the story. It’s our end of the year wrap up and the gang’s all here! Wherein Tara and Meredith talk about YALL Fest, we announce our 11th Hour Readathon to close out our 2019 TBRs, and we pick our favorites from this year’s reads. Then we cozy up by a (internet) fire to discuss the not-so-scary ghost story: “The Tenth Girl.” Find us on Twitter (https://twitter.com/eclecticreadpod), Litsy (https://www.litsy.com/web/user/EclecticReaders), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/eclecticreaders/), and Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/68328-eclectic-readers) Little House on the Prairie on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/77767.Little_House_on_the_Prairie?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=SYkI490LwI&rank=3) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/slredirect/picassoRedirect.html/ref=pa_sp_atf_stripbooks_sr_pg1_1) I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29010395-i-am-not-your-perfect-mexican-daughter?from_search=true&qid=G4A0aPf9XI&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Not-Your-Perfect-Mexican-Daughter/dp/1524700517/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=I+am+not+your+perfect+mexican+daughter&qid=1576333668&s=books&sr=1-1) Children of Blood and Bone on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34728667-children-of-blood-and-bone?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=xripT6Ef6L&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Children-Blood-Bone-Legacy-Orisha/dp/1250170974/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=children+of+blood+and+bone&qid=1576333551&s=books&sr=1-3) Of Kisses and Curses on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43985469-of-curses-and-kisses?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=zqRCFoc4mR&rank=2) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Curses-Kisses-Sandhya-Menon/dp/1534417540/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=of+kisses+and+curses&qid=1576333508&s=books&sr=1-1) Good Omens on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12067.Good_Omens?from_search=true&qid=R7U32m8hmD&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Good-Omens-Accurate-Prophecies-Nutter/dp/0060853980/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1G32Y0P98WLGF&keywords=good+omens+the+nice+and+accurate+prophecies+of+agnes+nutter%2C+witch&qid=1576333420&s=books&sprefix=good+omens%2Cstripbooks%2C171&sr=1-2) City of Ghosts on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35403058-city-of-ghosts?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=jgvUXuSISd&rank=2) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/City-Ghosts-Victoria-Schwab/dp/1338111027/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=city+of+ghosts&qid=1576333373&s=books&sr=1-1) The Importance of Being Earnest on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/92303.The_Importance_of_Being_Earnest?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=b3d4JrCNBA&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Importance-Being-Earnest-Oscar-Wilde/dp/0486264785/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=the+importance+of+being+earnest&qid=1576333222&s=books&sr=1-2) The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32620332-the-seven-husbands-of-evelyn-hugo?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=5mSRxvwSrb&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Seven-Husbands-Evelyn-Hugo-Novel/dp/1501161938/ref=sr_1_2?crid=15BN3Z422QY67&keywords=the+seven+husbands+of+evelyn+hugo&qid=1576333135&s=books&sprefix=the+seven+hus%2Cstripbooks%2C155&sr=1-2) Becoming on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38746485-becoming?from_search=true&qid=5b1AnPbs7R&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Becoming-Michelle-Obama/dp/1524763136/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=becoming&qid=1576333017&s=books&sr=1-1) Dear Martin on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24974996-dear-martin?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=gO0Q3bOx2m&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Dear-Martin-Nic-Stone/dp/1101939524/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3IZLBQGW29P4O&keywords=dear+martin&qid=1576332982&s=books&sprefix=Dear+MArtin%2Cstripbooks%2C172&sr=1-1) The Lies of Locke Lamora on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29588376-the-lies-of-locke-lamora?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=d33SqKF0UI&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Lies-Locke-Lamora-Gentleman-Bastards/dp/055358894X/ref=sr_1_1) Sleeping Giants on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25733990-sleeping-giants) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1101886692/ref=x_gr_w_bb_glide_sin) Next Episode’s Book: The Starless Sea on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43575115-the-starless-sea?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=vCHpgbXJDm&rank=1) and Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Starless-Sea-Novel-Erin-Morgenstern/dp/038554121X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=The+Starless+sea&qid=1576333862&s=books&sr=1-1)
Joining us is Very Special Guest Lilliam Rivera to talk her new book, Dealing in Dreams, plus hot literary tips, Bad Bunny, World Cup, and Ritzy's Yelp adventures. Recorded remotely via Skype = Palm Springs, LA + Southern OR on 7.13.19 You can find the AMAZING Lilliam on her site, Twitter, and Instagram. We discuss Dealing in Dreams, her latest novel. Nylon says the book, "exposes a world filled with exquisite, unflinching brutality, but also offers a real tenderness toward its young characters, many of whom are doing the best they can as they rapidly lose faith in the people and institutions they thought were supposed to protect them. It's a perfect coming-of-age novel in that way, demonstrating all the different ways there are to lose faith, but figure out a way to continue on anyway." (We also love Lilliam's first book, The Education of Margot Sanchez!) Lilliam is also writing a middle-grade novel series based on Goldie Vance which we can't wait to check out. Adriana, Jazmin, and Vian discuss “I’m Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” through first Gen lens!
Recorded on the same day as our discussion on Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez (oh, you should check that episode out), so, like that one, featuring not your perfect audio quality, this episode centers on damn near perfect Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. Seriously, we are so into it, it's almost difficult to sustain discussion. Everytime I read a passage for us to discuss everyone just oohs and ahs. Molly suggests Macbeth and Hamlet. Nate suggests Monster by Walter Dean Myers, The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon, Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and also "Hit 'Em Up" by Tupac Shakur. Kim suggests Miracle's Boys by Jacqueline Woodson, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and The Crossover by Kwame Alexander. Amy suggests Bus 57 by Dashka Slater. Cash Money suggests Boyz N The Hood. Lindsey suggests The Godfather Part 2.
