Episode 33Rosh Hashanah is a special week in the Jewish calendar. If you've been listening to our podcast in the past, perhaps you recall that the Jewish calendar is a solar – lunar calendar, meaning it is based on both the sun and the moon. Unlike the Christian calendar, which operates on a 365 day year. So, every year Rosh Hashanah occurs in the fall, usually September or October. Rosh Hashanah literally means “The Head of the Year”. It is thought of as the birthday of the universe. So, when you greet your Jewish friends & family this week, you might say Happy New Year, or L'shana Tovah. What is Shabbat? The bible says it took God 6 days to create the earth, and that on the seventh day he rested. That day of rest is Shabbat, or Shabbos if you speak Yiddish.Shabbat starts at sundown on Friday night, and ends after sunset on Saturday night. In the Jewish community, shabbat is declared a day of rest, contemplation, thought, and prayer. The Reform Jewish community sees Shabbat as a time of rest & family. The Orthodox Jews have many strict rules which specify which activities are permitted on Shabbat, and which are not. Specifically, farming, sewing, cooking, and lighting fires are prohibited. Those rules were created centuries ago, but are now interpreted to include electricity and telephones. These rules also prohibit driving on shabbat. As a vendor, you should respect your Jewish client's desires regarding Shabbat, and not expect phone calls or emails on Shabbat.Join Pat Blackwell here every week to learn and understand the traditions & vocabulary so important in Jewish celebrations. We talk about:KippotTishB'dekenChuppahKiddush cupStomping the glassHa MotziMazel TovYichudHoraAppetizers in a Jewish wedding are a feast, not just a cheese & cracker tray. How do you learn the different traditions of all these different cultures? Well, as Evis says, you sure can't learn that stuff on the wedding day. You do NOT get a do-over! If you miss that one second where the groom is stomping on the glass.....it is gone! You can never capture that again. As a vendor, that is a total failure on your part for not understanding the traditions so important to your clients. How are you going to learn? Ask the client - likely not, it would show them you don't know what they need. Ask a local rabbi - not likely you are that brave. The Jewish Party Maven was founded with the goal of coaching vendors in the customs and traditions so important to Jewish celebrations. They offer several options from online courses to weekly coaching.
