Thank you Dora Delgado for joining us on Past the WireBreeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer Dora Delgado is one of the most accomplished racing executives you'll meet. Her tenure of about 40 years with the Breeders' Cup speaks for itself and goes towards her dedication, commitment, loyalty, and love for the horses and the sport. Dora is one of the main reasons The Breeders' Cup went from shall we say The Super Bowl or World Series of Horse Racing to a world class and recognized major sporting event. With Dora's titles comes a world of responsibilities at the highest level of the sport. To quote The Breeders' Cup website description of her duties:“She is primarily responsible for the development and administration of the Breeders' Cup's racing programs around the world including the Win and You're In Challenge Series and thoroughbred racing's greatest global event, the Breeders' Cup World Championships. She is also responsible for the promotion and expansion of the foal and stallion nomination programs worldwide to maximize participation and generate program sustaining revenue. In her role, Dora manages the event Equine Security Team, the Breeders' Cup Veterinary Panel, the Field Selection Panel, the Breeders' Cup Racing team and works with the host track and its staff to create the safest and most secure environment possible for the equine participants. She is also responsible for all horse recruitment, equine event logistics and operational setup for the annual World Championships including communications with all federal, state and international regulatory authorities and works with the host state racing commission to ensure that any necessary waivers, rules and regulations are in place.”That is a 24/7 role and year round as are many careers and positions within our industry. Dora frankly takes us behind the scenes with what it takes and involves to make this world championship event happen smoothly. We relive some moments and explore where the Breeders' Cup has been and where it is going. We were fortunate to have Dora on the show and we can all get more than a glimpse into the Breeders' Cup.

Flo joins us fresh off his 8th and counting Breeders' Cup win aboard Idiomatic. The win put the Brad Cox filly right square in the middle of The Horse of the Year discussion under a crafty and hard fought ride by Flo.Florent Geroux has out together quite a resume in the saddle with 8 Breeders' Cup wins, a Kentucky Derby albeit not exactly the way he wants his next one, and riding some of the best horses in recent times. He was the regular rider of Gun Runner a world class racehorse, a war horse if you will and a throw back to the great horses of the past. Was one of Gun Runner's best races a race he didn't actually win?Flo talks about some of his past races and horses but also about one of the most exciting two-year old prospects to hit the track this year. How good does Flo think Nash is and when and how did he know it? You'll have to watch and listen to find out but we are confident it will be worth it. Florent Geroux is not only a great rider but a great guy to talk with, especially horses. Flo even gives us a bit of an education of the new crops and how they actually are in a race.Bottom line, great guy, great rider, great show. Nobody Does it Better!

Rosario Montanez is not only one of the toughest jockeys you will ever meet, he is one of the toughest people you'll ever meet. Welcome to another great episode of Past the Wire TV and our phenomenal One on One Rogue's Gallery series. If you want to talk fearless and jockey injuries this is an episode you do not want to miss. Faith, determination and believing in himself carried Rosario Montanez through what most of us would not make it through, not once but twice. This is a rider who did not let having his face practically ripped off, his eye taken out, being in a coma, breaking his back or his neck stop him. There is obviously no quit in Rosario Montanez. Rosario had the bug with Irad Ortiz and fate brought their careers in very different directions. Montanez suffered a bad fall and horrific injury at Saratoga and was away from riding a long time. After paying his dues and then some he won by open lengths on his first mount back for Steve Asmussen. Fate was not done with Rosario by any means however. You'll have to hear this inspiring story for yourself. Definitely hit the like button and show some love to this jockey. Leave a note of support or encouragement as well. We will all appreciate it and so will he. If you're a trainer or owner with a nice horse look him up and give him a shot. It does not sound like you'll be sorry you did. Jon and Rosario talk a lot of racing including race riding, the tightrope between intimidation and danger, working horses you don't get to ride and more. A truly fascinating awe inspiring episode. You'll learn more about jockey injuries than you ever thought you would. They even touch base on the flack jockeys can get on social media.Thank you for watching Past the Wire TV

You'll have to watch! It's worth it.Keri has had quite the career already and learned her craft from one of the best, Jonathan Shepherd who knew how to win at Saratoga. Keri is also only second trainer to win over one million dollars in a season on the National Steeplechase Association circuit. Now for the controversy. As we all know Saratoga has been plagued with inquiries resulting in what most feel are inconsistent ruling, with no transparency or explanations. Keri was in the middle of one of these controversies and she talks with Jon quite frankly about what it is like from a trainers perspective. Do the stewards communicate with the trainer? Is the decision explained? How does it affect the horses next start?

We need stars and we need fans and bettors alike to connect with our equine athletes and that happens when we see them perform with some longevity. Flightline, Life is Good, Golden Pal and others are off to stud in 2023. Who are the sires of tomorrow and why? Let's see if this show ages well as Michael Wilson and Jonathan Stettin explore who they like and who they don't as sires to be. Thank you for watching Past The Wire TV. We hope you like the show. Welcome to another episode of Past the Wire's podcast, Gate to Wire brought to you by Spendthrift farm.Usually when you ask someone their favorite horse-racing movie you get a few of the same answers. Let It Ride, Secretariat, Phar Lap and maybe one or two others. Not when you ask our host Jonathan Stettin. Co host Michael Zale posed the question and get the unexpected answer. The Killing. No, it is not very well known in today's racing circles and most racing fans today have never heard of it let alone seen it. That said it was famed Director Stanley Kubrick's first major file and many of the techniques he used in filming this classic have been copied. Jon readily admits the film is not for everyone but as someone who has always rooted for the bad guy and the under dog Jon loves the movie and quickly calls it his favorite horse-racing film ever. Michael and Jonathan discuss the film, the characters, the backdrop and ssome classic quotes of which the film has many. Apologies in advance for two of the language in the quotes as no offense is meant or applied they were taken from the film. You can watch the trailer HERE and see what it is all about.

Welcome to Past The Wire's podcast Gate To Wire! The Haskell sure came up special this year. Both Jack Christopher and Taiba are potential stars and either can easily wind up the Champion Three-Year Old. This is an exciting race to watch and a challenging one to bet as the two heavy favorites are tough to go against. Is Cyberknife good enough if he gets the pace and right set up? What about White Abarrio? This should be one good horse race. Listen to what Michael Vale and Jonathan Stettin think about this potential classic Haskell.

    Handicapping Pace

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2022 98:52

We have all heard the saying "Pace Makes The Race" and it is definitely true. Pace has a significant impact on the outcome of many races daily. Turf, dirt, long, short, pace comes into play. Is it the only factor and end all be all? Of course not, but knowing who will be running where and how fast, and who will and who won't be running fast enough to win at the end of a race is critical to have a chance at long term success. On this Past the Wire TV  video Jonathan Stettin talks about how he deciphers pace, why pace figures and projectors and even computers can't beat the human mind in this area. In this year's Kentucky Derby we saw just how much pace can affect the outcome of a race when Rich Strike benefited from the perfect pace and trip for him to beat horses he would not beat in different pace scenarios. That was an extreme example but lesser examples happen daily and often at big prices.Learn how to have a pace advantage of your own and use it as an edge against your competition! Being prepared counts. Just like horses train in the morning, we have to get ready for the races as well. Knowing who will be where when is part of that. Pace! Pace makes the race!
