Multiple Eclipse Champion Flightline was bred by Jane Lyon's Summer Wind Farm and raced by Summer Wind in partnership with Hronis Racing, Siena Farm, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing. A $1-million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling purchase from the Lane's End consignment, Flightline was trained by John Sadler and was ridden in all six of his starts by Flavien Prat.Flightline's victory in the $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland was the culmination of an historic career in which he won all six starts— by a combined 71 lengths -- including four Grade 1s. Flightline was the world's highest-rated racehorse in 2022, having been assigned a mark of 139 following his 19 1⁄4-length victory in the Pacific Classic (G1) . He is the highest-rated dirt horse in history. Facing the strongest field he had ever met in the Classic, Flightline stalked four-time Grade 1 winner Life Is Good through hot fractions before collaring that rival at the quarter pole and drawing clear under a hand ride. He earned triple-digit Beyers in all six starts - 121, 126, 112, 118, 114, 105.His first in-foal mares average $1,074,431, highest average for an incoming stallion in the last 15 years. Flightline had more seven-figure in-foal mare sales than any other stallion in 2023. He led all sires by CI - 6.98, over two points higher than the next best stallion. By CPI (7.40) he led all incoming stallions by 2.31 points, and ranked third out of all stallions by CPI. Flightline's first weanlings also made an impression in the sales ring this year, selling for up to $1,300,000. His first yearlings hit the sales ring in 2025.(UPDATED AS OF JAN 31, 2025)

The director of the Portland International Jetport explains airport surface detection and runway incursions, airport use restrictions, construction at the airport, the impacts of a power outage, and many other issues faced by airports. In the news, the NTSB reacts to a violation of its investigative regulations, Boeing plans to purchase Spirit Aerosystems, a resolution to the violation of the deferred prosecution agreement, the FAA's Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI), a home damaged by space junk, and a pilot caught working for two airlines at the same time. Guest Paul H. Bradbury is the director of the Portland International Jetport (PWM) in Portland, Maine. Since there have been many recent airport-related news stories, we asked Paul to join us and provide his insight. One timely topic is runway incursions and surface surveillance systems. The Jetport currently employs an Autonomous Runway Incursion Warning System (ARIWS) but we also look at the FAA's Surface Awareness Initiative and the new uAvionics deployments. We also discuss airport use restrictions, the different Part 135 and Part 121 requirements, and the financial, security, and safety impacts of service vs. on-demand operations. Other topics include airport expansions, construction, and renovation while maintaining operations in the face of runway closures and back-taxiing on a runway. Also, residential development near the airport and land use issues such as improper zoning. Paul explains the impact of a power outage and the Jetport's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) backup project. We even talk about solar panel glare that impacts pilots, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) requirements, and whether there should be a Gate 13. (See Airports having or skipping gate 13, based on airport size [OC]). Aviation News uAvionix enables ground surveillance for runway safety The uAvionix FlightLine system provides ADS-B surveillance and surface situational awareness for Air Traffic Control towers at U.S. Airports. The system is qualified through the FAA's Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) program, a component of the FAA Surface Safety Portfolio. FlightLine is designed for facilities without existing surface surveillance systems. According to uAvionix, the FAA has identified over 230 airports that are potential candidates for an SAI solution. The first FlightLine deployments by uAvionix are for Indianapolis International Airport (KIND) and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (KAUS) towers. The systems were to be fully operational by June 30, 2024. Aircraft positions on the surface and in airport arrival and departure corridors are displayed on a surface map of the airport. ADS-B is the primary source of aircraft position. The Surface Awareness Initiative includes Approach Runway Verification and the Runway Incursion Device. Boeing Sanctioned for Sharing Non-Public Investigative Information With Media on 737 Max 9 Door Plug Investigation Boeing “blatantly violated NTSB investigative regulations” and the NTSB announced a series of restrictions and sanctions on the company. Boeing provided non-public investigative information to the media and speculated about possible causes of the Jan. 5, 2024 door-plug blowout. NTSB said Boeing will “no longer have access to the investigative information the NTSB produces as it develops the factual record of the accident.” Also, the NTSB will subpoena the company to appear at an investigative hearing into the case scheduled for Aug. 6 and 7, 2024 in Washington, DC. “Unlike the other parties in the hearing, Boeing will not be allowed to ask questions of other participants.” See also: NTSB rebukes Boeing after top exec discloses detail on Alaska Airlines blowout NTSB sends letter to David Calhoun, President and CEO of the Boeing Company [PDF] Boeing to buy supplier Spirit AeroSystems in $4.7bn deal Boeing plans to acquire Spirit AeroSystems in an all-stock transactio...

Just in time for this Saturday's Kentucky Derby, today's guest is Bill Farish. He's the founder of Woodford Racing and the general manager of Lane's End Farm, one of the world's premier thoroughbred breeding farms. Their horse Charismatic actually won the Derby in 1999. And just last year, their horse Flightline won the 2022 Breeders' Cup by a record distance. This conversation will give you a rare, close-up look into the world of horse racing. But it will also give you a close-up look at a REALLY special leader. For all his success and world-class reputation, Bill is an incredibly humble guy with the heart of a genuine caretaker. He loves his work. He loves his horses – his athletes, as he rightfully calls them. He loves to see the people he hires succeed. And he's trying to leave his industry better than he found it. It's the kind of quietly outstanding leadership that we don't always see elevated or showcased, but it teaches us SO much about what it really looks like to lead well. Plus, he gives us HIS pick for the horse he's backing this weekend, and you do NOT want to miss that! You'll also learn: Everything you've ever wanted to know about horse racing, ownership, and breeding The #1 thing you need to do as a leader to create alignment and ownership One hiring practice that can help you attract great talent (but it has a downside, too) Practical advice for working in a family business What it was like to host the Queen of England at his farm
Episode Summary: In Episode 125 of the Aerospace Advantage, Fighters on the Brink: ANG Flightline Perspective, Doug Birkey discusses a looming capacity cliff with Maj Gen Paul Rogers, the Adjutant General of the Michigan National Guard; Brig Gen Tim Donnellan, Commander of the Idaho Air National Guard; along with Lt Gen Dave Deptula, USAF (Ret.) and Heather Penney of the Mitchell Institute. The Air Force needs new fighters, and it needs them fast. When the Cold War ended, defense leaders cut the Air Force's fighter inventory by half. Service officials were willing to assume this risk because they were expecting to procure a new generation of highly capable fighters in the form of the F-22 and F-35. The problem is that this plan fell apart. We never bought enough F-22s, and F-35 production hasn't hit the levels required to reset the inventory. Remember those F-15s that were pulled from Kadena last year—because they were worn out—without a direct replacement? That was a powerful indicator about the scale of the current capacity challenge. The Air Force's fighter enterprise is literally collapsing, and even though the service is planning on buying 72 jets this year, inventories are so strained that this number falls short. This is a total force problem impacting active duty, reserve, and the Air National Guard.
