Both cohosts found today's crossword, a collaboration between Lance Enfinger and John Kugelman, to be a real workout (mentally, of course: physically they were pretty much doing their best mannequin imitations throughout the entire process). The theme was intriguing, to put it mildly: and the clues were definitely crunchier than usual for a Sunday, making the happy music, when it did at last arrive, particularly gratifying. This is Part Two of Two of The Twilight Sex Killer. On Monday 19th of February 1962, the same day that Norman Rickard's body was found, 23-year-old Alan Vigar, who was also a quiet, handsome and secretly-gay man was strangled to death in the privacy of his flat by a tall and attractive man that the Police believe he too had picked up in Piccadilly Circus. Both men had invited their killer in, undressed, willingly been tied up and asphyxiated as part of this sex play. The press dubbed him the Twilight Sex Killer. 'She... woke and was horrified to find that her husband was cold. She tried to pour brandy down his throat, and then found that he was dead...' In the early hours of New Year's Day 1886, Adelaide Bartlett stirred from her slumber to find her husband cold to the touch. He'd been unwell for some time, but his premature death didn't seem like an accident. Was he poisoned? Who wanted him dead? Edwin Bartlett's death in 1886 opened a Pandora's box of secrets and intrigue, as a couple's unconventional marriage – and their entanglement with close friend minister George Dyson - was laid bare. In this episode, Jen and David turn their attention to a salacious murder case, discussing its central themes of gender and Victorian social norms. Ep. 338: Jessica Kiang on Locarno 2025: The Best of the Postwar British Retrospective + Becoming Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week I'm reporting from the Locarno film festival, which every year has an outstanding retrospective that's a parallel essential to the premieres of new films. To discuss this year's retro, a deftly curated tribute to British postwar cinema called Great Expectations, I'm joined by a regular guest, critic and programmer Jessica Kiang, who is filing reviews for Variety but also, like me, inhaling swathes of this retrospective. Titles discussed include Obsession (1949, Edward Dmytryk), The Yellow Balloon (1953, J. Lee Thompson), It Always Rains on Sundays (1947, Robert Hamer), Turn the Key Softly (1953, Jack Lee), To Be a Woman (1951, Jill Craigie), The Elephant Never Forgets (1953, John Krish), Train of Events (1949, Sidney Cole, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden), Passport to Pimlico (1949, Henry Cornelius), The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950, Frank Launder), Time Without Pity (1957, Joseph Losey), and Never Let Go (1960, John Guillermin). Plus, just because: a bonus, brand-new film from Kazakhstan, Becoming (Zhannat Alshanova). Please support the production of this podcast by signing up at: rapold.substack.com Photo by Steve Snodgrass

Hall of Fame trainer and racing icon D. Wayne Lukas is remembered on this special, pop-up episode of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. The late Hall of Fame trainer died Saturday at age 89. He appeared on the RFRP nine times, and those interviews plus others dating to his first Kentucky Derby victory with Winning Colors in 1988 are replayed on this special episode. An indelible memory came in 2013, when Oxbow won the Preakness, a victory which marked a career renaissance for Lukas. He told the media if they wanted to talk to him the morning after that they had to show up at 4:30 a.m. EDT at the Pimlico stakes barn. Four of the people who took him up on that are on a panel discussion in this episode, including Alicia Hughes, Mike Gathagan, Steve Haskin and Flatter. Co-host John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times brings the show together as do replays of old interviews with Lukas, who appeared on the RFRP nine times, most recently last month. With regular episodes available every Friday morning, the Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.
He balks at the idea that he is the mayor of Pimlico, but longtime Baltimore fixture John Scheinman easily could fill that role. He has been a regular in the old press box for decades in his roles as a two-time Eclipse Award-winning turf writer and as a dyed-in-the-wool horseplayer. Scheinman is the lone guest this week on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. He talks about the can't-miss-him presence he has brought to Pimlico and tells stories about the last days of the old track before its planned demolition this summer and redevelopment in the next two years. Scheinman offers critical commentary about the reconfiguring of Maryland racing with the exit of The Stronach Group and the emergence of the new Maryland Jockey Club. He even has thoughts about the impact the new Pimlico will have on the Park Heights neighborhood in Baltimore. Asked to assume the imagined role of racing czar, Scheinman offered ideas on how he would lure fans back to the Preakness and how confident he is that the new racetrack and grandstand at Pimlico can meet his hopes. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.
This is the summer when old Pimlico is scheduled to be torn down with a new racecourse grandstand being built in time for Preakness 2027. How will that concept become a reality? On this week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod, new Maryland Jockey Club president and general manager Bill Knauf gets into the details as the episode's sole guest. Knauf discusses his more than quarter-century at Monmouth Park, where he worked hand in hand with a management team which brought sports betting and fixed-odds wagering to the Jersey Shore racetrack. The move of the Preakness to Laurel Park in 2026 and whether the new Pimlico will be ready in time for the 2027 renewal also comes up. The conversation covers how the new Pimlico may look and when plans may be finalized for the rebuilding of the Baltimore racetrack. Knauf offers thoughts about whether the $400 million budgeted for the project will be enough to cover the cost. Knauf also talks about the future of racing in the mid-Atlantic region, especially the relationship the new Maryland Jockey Club will have with its neighbors in Virginia. Of course any discussion of Pimlico will lead to thoughts about the spacing of the three Triple Crown races and whether it should be changed. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.
Sure, David Richardson runs the Greenmount Bowl in Hampstead where duckpins are readily available but whenever Nestor returns to Carroll County he summons the Executive Director of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen Association to educate all of us on the changing state of Pimlico, Preakness and horse racing in Maryland. The post David Richardson educates Nestor on state of Pimlico, Preakness and horse racing in Maryland first appeared on Baltimore Positive WNST.

The Preakness 2025 hangover has not been cured yet, and why should it? One of the great races of all time is subject to review as the Belmont Stakes looms on the horizon on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Two-time Eclipse Award-winning turf writer John Scheinman from Baltimore has his thoughts about the race, the Triple Crown schedule and the future of racing in Maryland with old Pimlico scheduled to be demolished this year. Bernie Hettel, the former top steward in Kentucky and Arkansas, weighs in with his opinion about Journalism's squeeze to victory in the Preakness and who should have been disqualified if anyone in one of the most physical stretch runs in Triple Crown history. He also has thoughts about the crop penalty assessed to jockey Júnior Alvarado in riding Sovereignty to a Kentucky Derby triumph. Ed DeRosa looks ahead to the holiday weekend with handicapping of races at Santa Anita and Churchill Downs. Co-host John Cherwa helps to go over some of the listener and reader feedback about Journalism's Preakness victory. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.

This was a very chaotic! From the New York Knicks eliminating the Boston Celtics,to the firing of Brandon Hyde. Ok, the clueless Commissioner of Baseball washed his hands with the Pete Rose situation. He took Rose and Joe Jackson off the permanently banned from baseball list. What a coward! You gotta hear my thoughts on that. The 150th Preakness was held at Pimlico racetrack for the final time. In 2026, the race will be at Laurel racetrack, making it's return in 2027. I'm really disgusted with sports right now, check out the rest of this episode, to hear more. We will be back next week with Episode 270.

This weekend may be for the last time when Preakness 2025 is run at old Pimlico. It is the site for this week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Michael McCarthy, the trainer of Journalism, discusses the timeline since his colt finished second in the Kentucky Derby and how he looks at being the favorite for the Preakness. Trainer Jamie Osborne talks about the reasons he decided not to bring Heart of Honor from across the Atlantic to race in the Derby and why he chose the Preakness for this colt and his daughter Saffie to ride in the U.S. From 1/ST Racing, the outgoing managers of the Preakness, TV host and analyst Ron Nicoletti and executive vice president Mike Rogers discuss not only Saturday's classic but also the transition of the Preakness and the rest of the state's racing to the new Maryland Jockey Club. Paddock Prince handicapper David Levitch offers analysis of both the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan on Friday and the Preakness on Saturday, even offering advice based on the weather whether it is rain or shine. Co-host John Cherwa from the Los Angeles Times discusses the big fine incurred by jockey Júnior Alvarado for overuse of the riding crop on Sovereignty to win the Kentucky Derby. They also look at listener and reader feedback about the idea to expand the Triple Crown by one week. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.

In July 1951, Communist and UN representatives began conducting peace talks. But the talks went nowhere, and the Communists broke them off on August 22. Meanwhile, throughout late 1951 and 1952, both sides worked to strengthen their defensive lines. The war changed from a war of movement to a mostly static, World War I style conflict. Still, the UN launched several relatively minor offensives during this time, including Operations Commando, Touchdown, Showdown, Pimlico, and many others. Join Evan and James as they narrate this new phase of the war.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
