As horse racing seemingly goes away from the public consciousness over the next 11 months, we wonder aloud about the 21st century realities of a sport that ruled a large part of Maryland sports in the 20th century. Leonard Raskin and Nestor discuss the future of the Preakness, Pimlico and whether Baltimore cares enough – or at all? Broadcasting icons and sports bettors Brent Musburger and Chuck Todd get together to discuss their ideas to cure what ails the Triple Crown in an exclusive conversation on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Musburger's years at CBS, ABC and VSiN took him to assignments that included the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Todd's work at NBC did not keep him from having a run at betting on horses. Both accomplished more recently in gambling on other games, they have ideas on how racing can survive in the 21st century. In the blush of Napoleon Solo's victory in Preakness 2026, Maryland Jockey Club president and general manager Bill Knauf assesses the week at Laurel Park and the transition back to Pimlico next year. He also talks about the coming partnership with Churchill Downs, which is poised to take over the intellectual-property rights to the Preakness as it may move forward on a different date in 2027. Handicapper Ed DeRosa offers tips for Memorial Day stakes races, including the big card at Santa Anita on Monday. He also offers advice on how to bet the Keertana Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Co-hosts John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times and Keith Nelson of Fairmount Park have their popular chat segment and weigh in on listener and reader feedback from Preakness week. In The Money Media's Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) and Jonathon Kinchen (JK) catch up following a unique running of Preakness 2026 this past Saturday (May 16) at Laurel Park instead of the usual host track Pimlico, which is currently undergoing renovations. PTF & JK offer reactions and analysis of Preakness 2026 including on the mildly surprising win by Napoleon Solo, who scored under jockey Paco Lopez at a square price of 8-1, and talk in general about the 2026 Triple Crown season which started with a bang from Golden Tempo's sensational stretch run to win Kentucky Derby 2026 for jockey Jose Ortiz and trainer Cherie DeVaux. Triple Crown focus now shifts to three weeks from now up in Saratoga for the final jewel of horse racing's signature series with Belmont Stakes 2026, which so far has attracted the likes of Golden Tempo among other Kentucky Derby starters who opted to skip this year's Preakness Stakes. What did you think of the Preakness? What are your takeaways from the race? Share your thoughts in the comments! PTF sits down with Paul Halloran, author of the new book about Cody's Wish. Cody Dorman's story captivated the nation as the racehorse Cody's Wish rose to prominence. Cody met the foal in 2018 through Make-a-Wish, and the owners named the horse after Cody after seeing their connection. Cody traveled across the country to watch the horse run, drawing national attention.Cody saw Cody's Wish win a Breeders' Cup race at Keeneland in 2022 and was at Santa Anita in 2023 when the horse ended his career with a thrilling victory. The next day, on the flight home, Cody fell asleep on his mother's shoulder and did not wake up. While his death caused immeasurable sadness, those close to him were comforted that he was there for his horse right to the end. This is a story of resilience, triumph, and love—of the inexplicable yet undeniable bond between a courageous boy and the champion racehorse he considered his best friend. And it is a story that is still unfolding, with a life-size monument at Kentucky Horse Park debuting in 2025 and the first crop of Cody's Wish foals heading to the yearling sales in 2026, to race as two-year-olds in 2027.

Two-time Eclipse Award-winning turf writer John Scheinman pays his annual visit by way of an after-dinner interview from his hometown Baltimore. He talks about the changing landscape of Maryland racing as it moves to new caretakers and a reimagined Pimlico next year. He also talks about the past, present and future of the Preakness in addition to offering his tips for Saturday's race. Ocelli's trainer Whit Beckman, Chip Honcho's trainer Steve Asmussen and undefeated Taj Mahal's wife-and-husband team of trainer Brittany Russell and jockey Sheldon Russell have the view from the stables as they look forward to the 151st Preakness. Paddock Prince handicapper David Levitch zeroes in on three stakes on the Saturday card at Laurel Park, including the $2 million feature. FanDuel TV's Caton Bredar joins Horse Racing Nation handicappers Ed DeRosa and Mark Midland as well as host Ron Flatter from Laurel Park. They consider whether Iron Honor is a worthy 9-2 favorite on the morning line. They also weigh the possibility that the shortest price come post time Saturday could be Incredibolt or Ocelli from the Kentucky Derby or perhaps new shooter Chip Honcho. The absence of Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo and the largest Preakness field in 15 years contribute to the conversation about overlays and underlays for this 151st edition of the Preakness, which is being run this year at Laurel Park while Pimlico is being rebuilt. After news that Cherie DeVaux, the first woman to ever train a winner of the Kentucky Derby, decided to skip Preakness 2026 with Kentucky Derby 2026 champion Golden Tempo, conversations in horse racing have again circulated about whether the current state of the Triple Crown is broken or not. In The Money Media's Peter Thomas Fornatale (PTF) sits with NBC's Randy Moss to talk about the scheduling of the Triple Crown races. Many trainers have expressed disinterest and concern in bringing horses out of the Kentucky Derby back to the track in two weeks to compete in the Preakness Stakes, held traditionally at Pimlico Racecourse but to be contested this year at Laurel Park while Pimlico undergoes renovations. And yet, many trainers including Kentucky Derby 2025 champ Bill Mott have opted to go from the Kentucky Derby to the third jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, which Sovereignty did win with ease over Journalism - a horse who competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown in 2025 including a win in Preakness 2025. Some horses have taken the test unburdened even in defeat, but trainers remain hesitant in the modern age to risk their runners in the Preakness. So what has to change? Does the Triple Crown necessarily have to change? The Triple Crown in horse racing has always been an elusive and difficult prize but is that reason enough to maintain the current schedule which does not even excite trainers to send their prospects down the Triple Crown trail? The Triple Crown traditionally has been a five-week turnaround between the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, but would adding more time between those races encourage trainers to participate and help reignite energy for the spectacle, or is it all just bells and whistles? PTF and Randy Moss discuss the issues with the current state of the Triple Crown in horse racing and discuss what options exist around its current dysfunction.

This week I'm reporting from the Locarno film festival, which every year has an outstanding retrospective that's a parallel essential to the premieres of new films. To discuss this year's retro, a deftly curated tribute to British postwar cinema called Great Expectations, I'm joined by a regular guest, critic and programmer Jessica Kiang, who is filing reviews for Variety but also, like me, inhaling swathes of this retrospective. Titles discussed include Obsession (1949, Edward Dmytryk), The Yellow Balloon (1953, J. Lee Thompson), It Always Rains on Sundays (1947, Robert Hamer), Turn the Key Softly (1953, Jack Lee), To Be a Woman (1951, Jill Craigie), The Elephant Never Forgets (1953, John Krish), Train of Events (1949, Sidney Cole, Charles Crichton, Basil Dearden), Passport to Pimlico (1949, Henry Cornelius), The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950, Frank Launder), Time Without Pity (1957, Joseph Losey), and Never Let Go (1960, John Guillermin). Hall of Fame trainer and racing icon D. Wayne Lukas is remembered on this special, pop-up episode of the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. The late Hall of Fame trainer died Saturday at age 89. He appeared on the RFRP nine times, and those interviews plus others dating to his first Kentucky Derby victory with Winning Colors in 1988 are replayed on this special episode. An indelible memory came in 2013, when Oxbow won the Preakness, a victory which marked a career renaissance for Lukas. He told the media if they wanted to talk to him the morning after that they had to show up at 4:30 a.m. EDT at the Pimlico stakes barn. Four of the people who took him up on that are on a panel discussion in this episode, including Alicia Hughes, Mike Gathagan, Steve Haskin and Flatter. Co-host John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times brings the show together as do replays of old interviews with Lukas, who appeared on the RFRP nine times, most recently last month. With regular episodes available every Friday morning, the Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.

He balks at the idea that he is the mayor of Pimlico, but longtime Baltimore fixture John Scheinman easily could fill that role. He has been a regular in the old press box for decades in his roles as a two-time Eclipse Award-winning turf writer and as a dyed-in-the-wool horseplayer. Scheinman is the lone guest this week on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. He talks about the can't-miss-him presence he has brought to Pimlico and tells stories about the last days of the old track before its planned demolition this summer and redevelopment in the next two years. Scheinman offers critical commentary about the reconfiguring of Maryland racing with the exit of The Stronach Group and the emergence of the new Maryland Jockey Club. He even has thoughts about the impact the new Pimlico will have on the Park Heights neighborhood in Baltimore. Asked to assume the imagined role of racing czar, Scheinman offered ideas on how he would lure fans back to the Preakness and how confident he is that the new racetrack and grandstand at Pimlico can meet his hopes. This is the summer when old Pimlico is scheduled to be torn down with a new racecourse grandstand being built in time for Preakness 2027. How will that concept become a reality? On this week's Ron Flatter Racing Pod, new Maryland Jockey Club president and general manager Bill Knauf gets into the details as the episode's sole guest. Knauf discusses his more than quarter-century at Monmouth Park, where he worked hand in hand with a management team which brought sports betting and fixed-odds wagering to the Jersey Shore racetrack. The move of the Preakness to Laurel Park in 2026 and whether the new Pimlico will be ready in time for the 2027 renewal also comes up. The conversation covers how the new Pimlico may look and when plans may be finalized for the rebuilding of the Baltimore racetrack. Knauf offers thoughts about whether the $400 million budgeted for the project will be enough to cover the cost. Knauf also talks about the future of racing in the mid-Atlantic region, especially the relationship the new Maryland Jockey Club will have with its neighbors in Virginia. Of course any discussion of Pimlico will lead to thoughts about the spacing of the three Triple Crown races and whether it should be changed. In July 1951, Communist and UN representatives began conducting peace talks. But the talks went nowhere, and the Communists broke them off on August 22. Still, the UN launched several relatively minor offensives during this time, including Operations Commando, Touchdown, Showdown, Pimlico, and many others.
