Noam and Jen unfortunately had to cancel their special podcast plans due to the death of Noam's grandfather, but we still recorded an episode nonetheless. We certainly had plenty to discuss; the solved yet unsolved mystery of the Brown University - MIT shooter, the TPUSA conference, how the USS Liberty incident is indeed irrelevant to any conversation in 2025, Ben Shapiro, how the Heritage American conversation is heading to some dark places, and how America is pretty damn cool. On the Pluribus front, there's the reveal of what the Big Plan is for the hivemind, Carol struggling with how everything is perfect but also completely wrong, and Manousos still making his way to Carol's doorstep.
After a long break, Fred and Adrienne are finally back—and yeah… it's a little rusty

Jim cracked me up with the story he told in his recent family newsletter. He and his honey were enjoying some personal time at the Atlantic Ocean, which is really big. Jim decided to take a picture of himself and the ocean, which is really big. Later, he made a disturbing discovery which he reported this way. "I think I missed the ocean!" Which is really big. Oh, he's in the picture, but the Atlantic is nowhere to be seen. Now how can a smart guy miss something as big and as beautiful as the ocean? Well, by totally focusing on himself. I've made that mistake. Missing the big thing because I was so focused on myself. I suspect I'm not alone. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "What You Miss When You're a Selfie." When we're hurting, when we're grieving, when we're grappling with this big problem, we tend to go inward and become all about ourselves. We miss the person we married because we're so focused on our frustrations with them. Before we married them, we magnified what we loved and minimized what bothered us. Now we're all about our frustrations with them, forgetting all we loved about them. So it's selfie time. All about me. Losing sight of the one we once could not live without. So we stop loving like we did, and they start responding to the change. We can miss our kids the same way. By dwelling on how they're disappointing us, defying us, or distancing themselves from us. So we're sucked into a cycle of seeing - and talking about - only what they need to change. Not seeing - and talking about - the big picture of their strengths and their potential. We focus the lens on our hurt and our fear and our frustration, and we miss the big stuff. That masterpiece God made and entrusted to you in that child. I know how much my picture can become a selfie when I'm going through a hurting time. Pain tends to make us selfish: self-centered, self-pitying and all those nasty self words. But my Bible tells me that there's always something bigger going on than the immediate situation. It's affirmed in our word for today from the Word of God from Romans 8:28, "All things work together for good to those who love God, and are called according to His purpose." And the Bible says, "I know the plans I have for you, plans for good and not for evil, to give you a hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). There's a Big Plan for my good. But I'll miss the big and beautiful part if I just focus on my pain. When my precious Karen was suddenly gone that May, my natural tendency was to be all about me - my grief, my life without her, my future. But, thankfully, God quickly rescued me from my selfie. And He began to show me what I could become through this greatest heartbreak of my life. I can honestly say my heart is more open than it's ever been - open to God's voice, open to letting my journey help somebody else on their journey, open to broken and breaking hearts that are all around me. What's scary is that our "selfie" can actually cause us to miss the biggest and most beautiful sight of all - the God who made us. We so want to have life our way that we live as if we've dethroned Him from the throne of our life. In the Bible's words, "Each of us has turned to His own way" (Isaiah 53:6). And, you know, all those choices where we've sort of said, "God, You run the universe, but I'll run me" - well, in the Bible's words they have "separated you from your God" (Isaiah 59:2). And you knew that without listening today, you could feel that gap between you and Him. All about me. Missing the God who's the reason we're here; whose love we're made for. Who thought we were worth sending His Son to die for. Maybe this is the day that you release the wheel of your life - your selfie life - to the One you were made to know and made to belong to. And the One who gave you your life is the One who's supposed to be running it. Would you tell Him today, "Jesus, from now on I'm yours." Go to our website. There's so much more there about how to be sure you've begun a relationship with God. It's ANewStory.com. The Ocean of God's great love is right there within my sight, that big thing, unless I'm blocking the view.

On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we talk through the latest rumors about Apple's upcoming iPad mini 8. The next-generation version of the iPad mini is expected to feature an OLED display, as part of Apple's plan to expand the display technology across many more of its devices. Apple's first OLED device was the Apple Watch in 2015, followed by the iPhone in 2017 and the iPad Pro in 2024. It now apparently plans to bring the technology to more devices, such as the iPad Air, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro, and could start with the iPad mini next year. The current iPad mini has a Liquid Retina LCD display, just like the iPad Air. OLED offers higher contrast with true blacks, wider viewing angles, faster response times, better efficiency, and generally better perceived picture quality than LCD. The current iPad mini came out in 2024, with the main upgrade over the previous version being the A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence support. The previous generation introduced a complete redesign and the A15 Bionic chip. In August, Apple mistakenly shared code that revealed key information about the next-generation iPad mini with the codename J510/J511: The device features the A19 Pro chip, which is used in the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The current iPad mini uses a version of the A17 Pro chip from the iPhone 15 Pro with a five-core GPU. The A19 Pro used in the iPhone Air also has a five-core GPU, as opposed to the full six-core version in the iPhone 17 Pro models, so it seems likely that this binned version of the chip will be the one used in the next iPad mini. Bloomberg claims that Apple is working on a version of the iPad mini that has a more water resistant design, making it the first iPad with a water resistance rating. While the iPhone has IP68 water resistance that allows it to withstand submersion in water up to six meters deep for 30 minutes, it is not yet known what IP rating the iPad mini might feature. The iPad mini's updated casing is expected to offer water resistance similar to the iPhone, making it safe for casual use in wet environments like a bath or a pool area. Apple has reportedly developed a new speaker system for the iPad mini that uses vibration-based technology, allowing for the speaker holes in the device to be removed. Removing the speaker holes would cut down on areas where water could get into the crevices of the iPad mini. For the iPhone, Apple uses adhesive and gaskets to protect the speaker holes and other ingress points from water intrusion, so the iPad mini's design would be radically different. The current iPad mini does not have an official water resistance rating and it is not safe to get it wet. With an OLED display, water resistance, a new speaker system, and a faster chip, the device is expected to be more expensive, and Apple could charge up to $100 more for the device. The iPad mini is currently priced starting at $499. Apple will purportedly launch the iPad mini 8 with OLED display in the third quarter of next year at the earliest. We also discuss further thoughts on the M5 Vision Pro, weighing up its utility for travel and day-to-day use-case, and take a look at the growing differentiation and optionality within Apple's product lineups. Global shipping contributes about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to the total emissions of Japan or Germany. The sector, including its contribution to climate change, is governed by the International Maritime Organisation or the IMO, which is a UN agency based in London in the United Kingdom.Last week, the International Maritime Organisation gathered to vote on a proposal to reduce emissions from ships that had been agreed to in principle earlier this year. And ahead of the gathering, most people intimately involved in the process thought the proposal would pass. But that wasn't the case. The US stepped in at the last minute and pressured all those gathered to delay the vote on the proposal for another 12 months. This week on Cleaning Up, host Bryony Worthington sits down with Professor Tristan Smith, a leading expert on shipping decarbonisation from UCL Energy Institute, to unpack the dramatic events at the latest International Maritime Organization meeting — where the United States' last-minute intervention derailed a landmark vote on cutting emissions from ships.Together, they explore:How global shipping, responsible for around 3% of greenhouse gas emissions, became a critical test case for international climate policyWhy the IMO's proposed carbon intensity regulation could have marked the beginning of the end for oil and LNG as marine fuelsThe “Tariff diplomacy” and other threats that reshaped global negotiationsWhat this means for COP30 and other multilateral agreements.Bryony and Tristan also dive deep into possible solutions: from e-fuels, ammonia, and battery electrification to nuclear propulsion — weighing what's practical, what's political, and what's merely wishful thinking.Leadership Circle:Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. How to navigate relationships when one partner's plans or hopes for the future differ from their spouse. Do partners have to have the same dreams to be happy together?
Jeff Howe and Gerry Hamilton sat down with new Texas Longhorns head coach Sean Miller for an in-depth, wide-ranging interview. With his first season at Texas about to tip off, Miller laid out his philosophy, roster insights, and expectations for the journey ahead. Building the Foundation: Miller stressed the importance of pace, detail, and defense. His offense will emphasize fast execution—not just quick shots—while the defense starts with a strong man-to-man foundation. The key this season? Don't try to do everything at once—get really good at the essentials first. Analytics Meets Instinct: Miller explained how modern analytics help him identify the best lineups, balance offense and defense, and “fix leaks” when certain combinations don't work. But he still leans on instinct and proven coaching principles to guide decisions. The SEC Challenge: Miller called the SEC “the best conference in college basketball”—loaded with athleticism, physicality, and elite coaching. He compared it to the old Big East but with more speed and defensive playmakers. Scheduling & Growth: Balance is everything. Facing Duke, Maui's gauntlet, and true road games will harden the team, but Miller said November and December aren't the measuring stick. His goal is for Texas to peak in February and March when it matters most. The interview wrapped with Miller's vision: this year is about building steadily, maximizing depth, and molding a team that fans will love to watch because the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts. Season tips off November 4th vs. Duke—and the Miller era begins!
