Arguably the biggest hindrance to advancing Biblically aligned policy in Alaska has been the relentless willingness of a few Republican State Senators and House members to give power to the Democrats in exchange for leadership positions. Two of those legislators, Senator Gary Stevens and Representative Louise Stutes, both from Kodiak, have been leading that charge for a long time. It's been a tiring mantra. Elect Republican majorities. Democrats are put in authority. We now have a legitimate moment to change this trajectory.Gary Stevens is retiring and Louise Stutes is leaving the House to run for his Senate seat. Because she's been giving power to the Democrats just like he has, Stevens has endorsed her.But Stutes has a challenger. And he is gaining traction.Heath Smith, a former Homer City Council member, life long Alaskan and astute observer of what's wrong with our "bi-partisan" ineffective legislative caucuses, is on the show today. Senate District C includes Seward, Homer, Cordova, Ninilchik, Anchor Point and Kodiak among other communities but the implications of this critical Senate race have long term statewide implications.Hope you can join in on our conversation.Support the show

How great were Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–1983?In this episode of By Far The Greatest Team, Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney are joined by South Coast Jamie Wilson to tell the story of one of English football's great contradiction seasons: Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–83.This was a campaign that ended in relegation from the First Division — but also took Brighton to the first FA Cup Final in the club's history. A season of struggle, chaos, colour, character and one immortal Wembley moment. We look back at Brighton's wider journey through football history, from their formation in 1901 and Southern League roots, through the Brian Clough interlude, the Alan Mullery era, Peter Ward's goals, and the rise that carried the club into the top flight. Then we focus on 1982–83 itself: Jimmy Melia's unlikely FA Cup adventure, the key players who carried Albion to Wembley, and the unforgettable final against Manchester United. The first game ended 2–2, giving Brighton one of the most famous near-misses in FA Cup history: “And Smith must score…”Was Gordon Smith's chance the moment that defined Brighton's past? Or has it unfairly overshadowed a remarkable achievement from a team fighting battles on every front? With players like Steve Foster, Jimmy Case, Michael Robinson, Gary Stevens, Tony Grealish, Graham Moseley and Gordon Smith, Brighton 1982–83 may not look like an obvious candidate for greatness. But sometimes greatness is not just about trophies. Sometimes it is about story, identity, resilience, and how close a team came to changing everything. So where do Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–83 belong in our Table of Greatness?Takeaways Brighton's rise from Southern League roots to the First Division  The importance of Alan Mullery, Brian Clough and Peter Ward in the wider Brighton story  Why the 1982–83 season was both a disaster and a fairytale  Jimmy Melia's colourful and chaotic FA Cup run  The key players behind Brighton's Wembley journey  The 1983 FA Cup Final against Manchester United  Why “And Smith must score” remains one of the great FA Cup moments  Whether a relegated side can still be considered great Listen now and join us as we decide whether Brighton & Hove Albion 1982–1983 were truly one of football's greatest teams. If you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!

Creativity is not a gentle muse that visits the idle; it's a relentless force that demands your full engagement, discipline, and honesty. In episode 152, Gary Stevens strips away the romantic myths surrounding creative work and expose its true nature: ideas are raw materials mined from the grind of lived experience, relentless questioning, and the courage to confront failure head-on. Stevens, a visual artist and the author of All of Your Friends are Imaginary, reveals that creativity flows from the friction of real-world challenges and that the spark of an idea is only the beginning. The real test is in execution: the willingness to distill complex insights into their core components, to pare down the noise, and to shape raw intuition into something others can learn from and use. The conversation is a masterclass in creative rigor. Stevens describes his process of ruthlessly editing his work, soliciting brutally honest feedback across industries and generations, and refusing to let past failures die unused — salvaging frameworks and lessons from abandoned projects and transforming them into new successes. We emphasize that the work of creativity is not just about having ideas, but about refining them through iteration, feedback, and the humility to recognize what we don't know. We argue that true creative value comes from making your insights accessible and actionable for others, using our own hard-won lessons as blueprints and warnings. If we want to create work that matters, we must be willing to thicken both our skill and our skin, distill our experience down to their essence, and share it with clarity and conviction. No shortcuts, no excuses, just relentless execution. Episode Sponsors: VM Merch Go Pills -- use "VM15" at checkout for 15% off your order. Our latest Official Everton Podcast looks back at the all-too-brief, but nonetheless spectacular, Everton career of Andy Gray. November 2023 represents 40 years since the Scottish centre-forward joined the Blues. Gray was plucked from Wolverhampton Wanderers by Howard Kendall and went on to have an unbelievable impact on a team that went from struggling to find its way to becoming arguably the best in Europe. Host Darren Griffiths speaks to Gray himself and is also joined by Dave Prentice and Gavin Buckland, with contributions from Gary Stevens and the former Liverpool Echo Sports Editor, Ken Rogers, who reveals that he discovered Gray's recruitment from an eagle-eyed Evertonian who had spotted him in a shop on Goodison Road. We learn that Everton were linked with Gray in the mid-1970s when Billy Bingham was the Blues manager, and the youngster was playing alongside Walter Smith at Dundee United. Everton statistician and historian Buckland tells us that Kendall was weighing up moves for an England striker and an Everton legend when he brought Gray in from Wolves. We also hear about when Gray threatened to walk out on the Club when he wasn't selected for an FA Cup tie and the man himself declares that if he could play one game again it would undoubtedly be the match against Bayern Munich at Goodison Park. We discuss whether Kendall would have kept Gray had we been allowed to take part in the 1985/86 European Cup and it's suggested that had he done so, then maybe Liverpool wouldn't have won the double that season. Gray speaks passionately about his time at Everton and agrees with the notion that the success of the mid-80s was probably an antidote for a challenging period in the history of the city of Liverpool. Everton never lost when Gray scored and that sums up his infectious desire to win football matches for the Blues. “My best memory was signing and my worst memory was leaving,” he says.

He wrote film criticism for the influential journal Cahiers du cinéma before impressing audiences with his first feature film, the improvisatory and original Breathless (1960), which established him as the apostle of the New Wave. He continued to explore new techniques in films such as My Life to Live (1962), Pierrot le fou (1965), Alphaville(1965), and Weekend (1968), using the camera creatively to express political commentary. He returned to themes of more universal concern with Every Man for Himself (1979) and Passion (1982) but stirred controversy with his updated Nativity story in Hail Mary! (1985). He received wide critical acclaim for Histoire(s) du Cinéma(1997), a video study of French film, and In Praise of Love (2001). Later films were the experimental collage Film Socialism (2010), the fragmented narrative Goodbye to Language (2014), and the cinematic essay The Image Book (2018).From https://www.britannica.com/summary/Jean-Luc-Godard. For more information about Jean-Luc Godard:Previously on The Quarantine Tapes:Wayne Koestenbaum about Godard, at 05:40: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-166-wayne-koestenbaumSalman Rushdie about Godard, at 02:00: https://quarantine-tapes.simplecast.com/episodes/the-quarantine-tapes-168-salman-rushdieGodard on Godard: https://www.dacapopress.com/titles/jean-luc-godard/godard-on-godard/9780306802591/“New Again: Jean-Luc Godard”: https://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/new-again-jean-luc-godard“Jean-Luc Godard in conversation with C S Venkiteswaran”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwquFZlitTUPhoto by Gary Stevens: https://www.flickr.com/photos/garysoup/3196585607/
