Album Details Album: The Tinkering Ink Peekaboo Album I used doesn’t seem to be in stock anymore. Hopefully you’ll use something you already have anyway but if you’re looking for a mini with shapes punched out like mine, the closest thing I can find to it is this one, which is on clearance right now. Album Color: By experimenting, I got a lovely mottled yellow on my pages that reminds me of colored Easter eggs. You know how colored eggs never come out smooth and perfect like they do on the cover of magazines?. I love the uneven colored-eggs look on my pages. Here’s how I got it: * Painted 2 layers of Golden’s Gesso. (You could try white acrylic paint if you don’t have gesso). * Sprayed a layer of Lemon Meringue Glimmer Mist and blended it in. * Spritzed some uneven splotches of Lemon Grass Glimmer Mist. I rubbed the Lemon Grass with my blending tool. The foam applicator left a lot of “bubbling” in the mist, I think because of the gesso, and then set the bubbles and splotches with a heat tool. Handmade flowers: I made my large turquoise flower out of Tim Holtz Grunge Board. To color the petals I painted two layers of gesso, then sprayed and dried multiple layers of Patina Glimmer Mist. It turns out that the gesso was not holding the Patina dye color, so it came out light, although very beautifully glimmery. Liz Hicks from Tattered Angels suggested using Making Memories Spotlight acrylic paint on chipboard or grunge board if you want the dye color to show more vibrantly. The tiny paper flowers and the large flower were inspired by the artist, Alisa Burke. The orange paperclipped flower is from Paperclipping Episode #118, which is now archived, but available to our Members.

Personal family videos are all over the internet these days. We put such an emphasis on photos in the scrapbook industry, but videos are just as much a part of our stories as pictures are. We’ve now released this week’s episode to the Paperclipping Members and in it I share some different ways Izzy and I started to incorporate the fun videos we take of our family and friends into our scrapbooking. I get questions all the time about where I got this product or that product that I used on a project. Since you, the Paperclipping audience, are from all over the world, I never know how to answer that. I either get things from my local scrapbook store or I order them online. I’m lucky that they’re located right in my own home town so I decided to give them a visit, tour their warehouse and location, and interview the owner, Jill Davis. For those of you who don’t have a Membership, we are pulling a Quick-Tip video from the archives. The idea I present is a great way to go back to all those past Halloweens you never got around to scrapbooking, while adding a little decorating (storytelling-style) to your home.

In this in-depth video I show you step-by-step in Photoshop Elements how to… 1. Isolate a subject in your photo so you can give it/him/her special attention. 2. Boost the color of your subject while making everything else black and white. 3. Make your subject stand out more by darkening your background and boosting the highlights in your subject. 4. Make your subject stand out by blurring the background. 5. Smooth the edges of your isolated subject so it doesn’t have that yucky “cut-out” look. You’ll be able to do the above with your own Halloween zombies, their bloody sores, or with cute little girls at tea parties–whatever you think needs special attention above its background. While there is nothing wrong with a vacation album or minibook that simply highlights the trip’s activities, there are some trips that add up to more than just that list. Some vacations impact you at a deeper level than the exciting agenda can show. For today’s free episode, I’ll share a vacation minibook I made for a trip like that. I’ll share how I found connections among my memories of the trip that led to a theme which I carried through the entire book. How often do you stare at your table, with no idea how you’ll scrapbook a set of pictures? I used to do that all the time, and it was the one thing that sometimes made me not want to scrap. Fortunately that hasn’t happened in years, and today I’ll show you why.

The idea is to create the feeling of peeking into my kitchen window to see the activity going on in there. Layouts From A Previous Paperclipping Live I haven’t had a chance to share the scrapbook pages from Dedra Long’s visit to Paperclipping Live a while ago. Here they are below… Hello Kitty two 12×12 pages Hello Kitty The photo on the left is myself around 4th grade–just a little older than my daughter, Trinity, in the photo on the right. I chose pictures of us in similarly shaped outfits and poses to emphasize the theme of commonality. Journaling reads: I adored Hello Kitty as a little girl and still do at age 36. I love her oval round face and the simplicity of her design. As a kid I didn’t get enough of her to feel satisfied so I love getting to enjoy her again through Trinity, who loves her too. Layout By Dedra Long Layout By Dedra Long Journaling to her daughter reads: You and me spending time together…these are some of the times I cherish most…I always love to walk in the studio to see the newest setup you have put together…It usually look something like this…the princess laptop, crayons, paper and scissors…you usually have the princesses singing the alphabet and you join then…then it’s math…in the end you show me your latest work of art…I will never forget. The Details The Details Almost all of the scrapbooking items on both layouts are from Theresa Collins. I salvaged all the Hello Kitty items from actual H.K. stuff–a backpack, a watch, party invitations, plus there are a few pictures. The spinner arrow underneath the tiny H.K. on the clock is a Tim Holtz spinner that I painted pink. Want help layering embellishments the way you see them layered in the center circle? Heritage photos and albums can be so fascinating, but sometimes we’re too overwhelmed and intimidated to start. In this episode I identify two questions you can answer that will help you know how to get started. Your answer will depend on your personal situation and in this episode I show you examples of two very different approaches.

Learning the description of a design or artistic principle is not the same thing as being able to really use and understand it. You often need to try it, then see other examples, then try it some more, and over time it makes more and more sense. We also love snuggling with you and joking and playing while we eat. 2-5-09 Alright, scrapbookers..are you ready to gather some patterned scraps, some brads or buttons, and maybe a chipboard swirl or rub-on border to add some pizazz to a layout? The key to getting good at this is to practice. I can’t wait to see what you have to show me.

Your layouts may be fabulous but if you’re not able to edit and crop them with the skill to match your pages, they won’t show as well as they deserve. Fair or not, good cropping and editing makes a difference. Today’s episode is free for anyone and in it I share the steps I take using Photoshop to prepare my pages for online viewing. We bought them for our upcoming trip-camping during the Monsoon Season. I never expected you’d want to wear them everyday: rain or shine * shorts or pants * and even to school. You get a lot of attention when you wear them, which probably makes them even more irresistibly cool to you. **The polka dot and gold patterned papers are quite old scraps from a time when most everything came in a grungy-brown. Until I did this page, whenever I saw that paper, I felt bogged down b/c it’s so dark and heavy. Look how great it looks, though, with vibrant red, yellow-gold, and bright white! Do you still have a lot of heavy browns from a few years back? Try using it in small amounts with other papers that make you happy. After The Feast 2-page 12×12 Layout After The Feast I love how flexible these templates are. I think next time I’ll try making three panels instead of two. I’m excited to see what some of you do with the template.

This is that story of how you kids take love and spread it around. Love Notes Journaing reads: A year or two ago Trinity started taping envelopes to their doors and walls to act as mailboxes so the kids could write and send notes to each other. (Note: these aren’t just for Valentines. They stay up all year long). Love Notes Journaling reads: Aiden’s “mailbox” on the hallway wall just next to the boy’s bedroom door. Love Notes Love Notes Love Notes Journaing reads: This is Blake sending drawings and notes to Trin over his DS. Trinity is sending notes back to him and they were supposed to be sleeping. It was a school night, but how could we stop them when Dad had just read Trin’s note to Blake, “I love you!” Love Notes While we were out for ice cream, Dad turned one of Trinity’s lip drawings into a hat. Yes, it has been too long since our last release and we appreciate everyone being so patient as we try to fix the websites! We still have some kinks to fix but at least we can release the tutorials once again. I’m glad to report that the demand for tutorials on design principles is high! That means today’s free episode will please many people. Do you have a lot of felt? If so, I think you’ll love this episode, especially if you also like Tim Holtz. (Ahem) Yes, I just said, “Tim Holtz.” Did that get your attention? Great, because whether you’re a Premium Subscriber or not, today’s episode is free to everyone and I’ll bet you haven’t seen a demonstration of a Tim Holtz product quite like this. Have you ever noticed how how bright felt products often are? I love the texture of felt and that it gives dimension to a layout. But the colors don’t always work for color combinations I’m using. Plus, if you buy a lot of it, you may just need to do something different with it for a new look. Today’s episode is a tip on how you can adjust the color of your felt, and even make it multi-colored. 1. Here is a piece of my felt in a color that hasn’t been attractive to me. And here are two shades of Tim Holtz’s Distress Embossing Powder. If you’ve never seen this before, this powder comes in colors that coordinate with Tim Holtz’s Distress Inks. And it gives a very gritty, textured look instead of the shinier smooth texture of regular embossing powders. But instead of using it on paper like it was intended, we’re using it on felt. You’ve probably seen embossing before and we’re going to follow th same steps. You just rub on your versamark or watermark ink, and sprinkle some embossing powder. 3. I want the original color to show through, so I’m only sprinkling a small amount. And I want to add a third color around the edges, so I’ve kept most of my edges empty and now I’m dipping the edges into the third color. 4. The tricky part is putting your embossing gun at the right distance to the felt. Your felt will get a little more crispy. The original color might darken a bit. But if you get too close with the heat tool, it’ll ruin the felt, so watch out for that. 5. The distress powder does an interesting thing to the felt that regular embossing powder doesn’t do. It raises some of the fibers so it has a lot more texture this way than when it is plain. 7. Show Gizmo layout. One tone Distress emboss to totally change the bright green felt and make it work with my color scheme. Also did it on the butterflies for multi-hued insects. 8. Show Geocaching album color for three-toned flower felt embellishment. You can do this technique with regular embossing powder but it won’t give as much texture as the Distress powder does. Close: I hope this gives you ideas and options of what you can do with products you’ve been holding onto.
