LGBTQ Filmmakers and activists at the 25th annual Provincetown International Film Festival talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. First we spoke with director Sophia Castuera and writer Ali Edwards about their first feature film “August At Twenty-Two” that's receiving a lot of buzz and will be available on most VOD streaming outlets next month. The film is about actress Cal (played by Edwards) who is floundering after college and is shocked to discover that her childhood soulmate has a serious girlfriend Em (Lilli Kay) who Cal unexpectedly falls in love with. “August At Twenty-Two” is an evocative and deeply felt portrait of young artists struggling to find their way in their craft and their lives. We also talked to Sophia and Ali about their inspiration for creating this film and their spin on our LGBTQ issues. Next we chatted with producer Fermin Rojas and director Mike Syers about their short film “There Are Things To Do” about LGBTQ activist and author Urvashi Vaid who passed away last year. Vaid was an outspoken immigrant, lesbian and woman of color who was an LGBTQ superhero and believed in human rights for all people. Urvashi led the charge in shaping the modern-day LGBTQ rights movement as Executive Director of National LGBTQ Task Force from 1989 to 1992 to founding LPAC the first lesbian Super PAC raising millions of dollars for candidates who are committed to social justice. The film chronicles her life in Provincetown and 34-year relationship with partner/wife comedian Kate Clinton who inspired her call to action resulting in achieving equality for our LGBTQ community. We concluded our montage with director Sam Shahid whose documentary “Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes” uncovers the life and work of photographer George Platt Lynes. Best remembered for his dazzling celebrity and fashion photographs of the 1930's and 1940's, Lynes was forced to keep his male nude photos hidden from the public. Shahid hopes his film will help reclaim this gifted artist's full legacy and lasting influence as one of the first openly gay American artists.  The Provincetown Film Society, Inc. You'll hear about the shows we loved this year, why we loved them, and the shows we think ar egreat recommendations for others (and a few that we thought were just okay). Television is a great way to explore different story beats, take deeper looks at different characters, and how they can be used to enhance a scrapbooking project. We also see how food TV shows have influenced our cooking and our lives, and it's been create to see their evolution from the days of 2am Food TV to everything that's available now. We discuss how some of these shows are more focused on competition and drama, while others are more focused on the process of cooking and being kind to one another. This conversation was so epic that we had to break it up into two episodes! The second half of this awesome conversation is coming up next week.

In this episode of the Crafty Ass Female Podcast, Kristin talks to this season's third and final December Daily Roundtable with four amazing guests: Tracey Fox, Nolana Lynch, Shannan Manton, and Juli Whetstone; and we're talking all about the tips and tricks we have for our December projects. Throughout the episode, we discuss how we document their lives through the holidays, including Ali Edwards' December Daily project. Tracy, Shannon, Nolana, Juli, and Kristin are all excited about scrapbooking the December season and chatting about their different approaches to the project. Nolana and Tracy are traditional scrappers, Shannon is a minimalist digital scrapbooker, and Juli loves mini-books. They all enjoy the different ways that they can document their December memories. Our conversation revolves around making the project work for your life, how to make it fun and exciting, and how to make it unique to you. Tracy discusses how she prefers to work on her December Daily album after the holidays are over, in a process she calls scrappy Christmas in July. This allows her to have more perspective on the stories she wants to tell and also batch-processes the photos and journaling. Other crafters in Ali Edwards' community have also been touting the idea of "Done by December", which is working on the project throughout the year so you don't feel pressure to work on it every day in December. List of our favorite tips & tricks: 1. Work on this project whenever it makes sense for you. Day or night, every day or spread it out, finish it in December, work on it in January, or finish it throughout the year. 2. Give yourself boundaries so that you're not trying to do everything and comparing yourself to everyone else in the process. Your project can't be everything, it can only be what you create. 3. Foundation pages can be a great way to get ahead if you like working in advance. 4. It can be fun and helpful to do things that help you get into the holiday season (playing music, getting out decorations, etc). 5. Even if you're not preparing foundation pages, it can be helpful to prepare parts of this project in advance. Organize your supplies, think about what stories you might want to tell, etc. 6. Make some things personal to you and your stories. If you're not a Starbucks person, don't feel like you need to go out and create a Starbucks cup page just because lots of people have one. 7. You can create this project in any size that you want. It can be the same size you usually work it, it can be bigger, it can be smaller. There are no size restrictions. 8. Your pages can all be different from one another. There is no need to tie everything together because you're already tying it all together with the month itself. 9. Create some stock photography on days where the lighting is good, the house is clean, and you've got your camera out. 10. Plan things out early, map out a few pages that you want to use for special days (or not special days). 11. Don't stress about the parts you find tedious. If you don't like those parts, skip them and move on to something else. Just because certain things are prominent in other people's books, doesn't mean they need to be prominent in yours. 12. Let this album be in your style. Use the things you like. Create in ways that you find fun. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing, unless you love their style too. Tracey Fox is a self-proclaimed “scrapbookin', feminist nerd” living in central Ohio with her husband, three cats, and no kids. She is a director of data analytics by day and a scrapbooker by night (and on weekends), and she documents her introverted adventures with bright colors and lots of photos on every page. Jeanne Williams talks about how she has been a lifelong storyteller and got back into scrapbooking about ten years ago. She also talks about how she does a weekly Project Life and a 6x8 story album every year. The conversation centers around how to approach December Daily storytelling, with the perspective that everyone has different lives, with different stories, and all of those stories matter. There is no right or wrong way to approach this project – and the best way forward is whatever works for you. We talk about how we all generally go into December knowing that there are some specific stories we want to tell. Some of us try to focus on prompts or story ideas related to the date or what we're feeling in the moment and others rely more on going back and reflecting a little bit later on. The conversation discusses the process of photojournalism and how that is a big part of the December storytelling process, especially when it can be a harder time to take photos. We also get into the different ways that we are tracking our stories throughout December. There are some really great ideas from using the Notes app on your phone, to using a Travelers Notebook to free write and get ideas down, to using index cards to help keep track of ideas, and more. I’ve known Ali Edwards for many years. When I was editor at Simple Scrapbooks, Ali was a regular contributor to our sister publication, Creating Keepsakes, so in a sense we worked in parallel—we both created content for magazines—we are both memory keepers and teachers and we often taught classes at the same events. A few years beyond that, Ali was one of the most popular online teachers at bigpictureclasses.com and we LOVED working with her. I shared more of her professional bio in the episode, but here let me add that one of the primary reasons I adore Ali so much is the inspiring way she documents everyday life with her family. She is real and open with life—the good and the difficult. Through her many workshops, she has led tens of thousands of women in their quest to document both the momentous and the mundane. Ali is also a fantastic example of how traveling with a single word can help you live your current story and enhance the quality of your life—in fact, I know you’ll LOVE this episode because we talk about the power of words — as it relates to memory keeping, family life and personal well-being. If you’re not familiar with Ali’s annual project, called One Little Word, be sure to watch this video. You’ll also get to hear Ali talk about her health and some of the changes she is making to preserve and promote her vitality and combat frustrating conditions. She mentions that she is currently following the Wahls protocol, so I’m linking HERE to Dr. Terry Wahls website. Ali is really great to share what she is learning about health and wellness on her @ae_wellness Instagram account, so if you’re wanting more detailed information, you will enjoy following her there. Ali mentions a few times using Project Life, which is both a memory keeping approach and full system of products developed by our mutual friend, Becky Higgins. The idea of reading a list of words came from Liz Lamoreux You can learn much more about Ali at aliedwards.com and specifically on her about page, HERE. Be sure to peruse her favorite pages and projects because that’s my favorite part. Ali’s scrapbooks are full of the kinds of details I love.As always I’m so grateful to you for listening. If you have questions or comments, leave them here as a comment or send me an email stacy@stacyjulian.com — I love hearing from you! And remember, YOU have exactly enough time for the important things in your life.

in·ten·tion·al inˈten(t)SH(ə)n(ə)l/ adjective done on purpose; deliberate; done in a way that is planned. I know, I know. We hear repeatedly how ‘this one thing’ will change everything, but when we peel back the layers it becomes apparent that ‘this one thing’ consists of a thousand other steps before we can bring it all together. The reality is that there will always be steps we need to take to get where we want to go. But how can we possibly maintain our grit and determination to get there when we are constantly bombarded with distractions and circumstances? All you need to do is have a couple of kids to realize that the road ahead is anything but straight and narrow, so how can you help yourself stay on that winding road without sliding down the slippery slope of living an average year? As Robin Sharma says, “Postponing your greatness is a recipe for heartbreak; and being casual about the life you deserve leads to casualty.” Do you feel yourself heading towards heartbreak because you have postponed yourself or your business too many time? Is this the year you decide to stop postponing the possibilities, realize your dreams or experience a slam dunk in your business growth? You know you are in charge of your own destiny, but you feel the need for something more – an injection of some kind to breathe excitement into your planning. Well, ‘this one thing’ could possibly make all the difference for you, in order to have that stand out year you so desire. “Done in a way that is planned.” That’s how the dictionary describes the word ‘intentional’. It isn’t an out-of-reach, scary word but rather one that can literally change your life. When you apply this ingredient to your dreams, goals and plans, it adds an element of, “I’ve got this and I’m not going to waver!” Today on the podcast, I share ways to access this key ingredient, how to incorporate it as a theme for the year, why it’s an integral part to ensuring a stand out year. Listen in – I want this to be your year, fully owned and lived by you, intentionally. Layouts From A Previous Paperclipping Live I haven’t had a chance to share the scrapbook pages from Dedra Long’s visit to Paperclipping Live a while ago. Here they are below… Hello Kitty two 12×12 pages Hello Kitty The photo on the left is myself around 4th grade–just a little older than my daughter, Trinity, in the photo on the right. I chose pictures of us in similarly shaped outfits and poses to emphasize the theme of commonality. Journaling reads: I adored Hello Kitty as a little girl and still do at age 36. I love her oval round face and the simplicity of her design. As a kid I didn’t get enough of her to feel satisfied so I love getting to enjoy her again through Trinity, who loves her too. Layout By Dedra Long Layout By Dedra Long Journaling to her daughter reads: You and me spending time together…these are some of the times I cherish most…I always love to walk in the studio to see the newest setup you have put together…It usually look something like this…the princess laptop, crayons, paper and scissors…you usually have the princesses singing the alphabet and you join then…then it’s math…in the end you show me your latest work of art…I will never forget. The Details The Details Almost all of the scrapbooking items on both layouts are from Theresa Collins. I salvaged all the Hello Kitty items from actual H.K. stuff–a backpack, a watch, party invitations, plus there are a few pictures. The spinner arrow underneath the tiny H.K. on the clock is a Tim Holtz spinner that I painted pink. Want help layering embellishments the way you see them layered in the center circle? If you have a Paperclipping Membership, I recommend watching Paperclipping 94 where I showed the techniques and principles of layers that lead in a “crescendo” toward a climactic point.
