What do sassy put-downs, pregnant beagles, and dolphins in Antarctica have in common? They're all part of this week's entertaining and informative episode of Pet Chat! We kick things off by sharing Ginger's hilariously sassy interactions with dogs, celebrating a graduation milestone, and testing our knowledge with a fun game of Kahoot Now. We then discuss an amazing study from a recent science podcast that reveals the presence of life in a deep, cold, dark lake in Antarctica. As we continue, we delve into international pet stories, exploring potential dangers like rattlesnakes in Africa and wallabies in Australia. We also celebrate the adoption of Honey, a dog that understands Spanish, and examine the science behind dogs' ability to understand language. And if that wasn't enough, we share some exciting news about the Ginger stuffy pre-sale, with proceeds going towards funding underprivileged kids to attend Science Camp. Finally, we discuss the challenges of naming a pregnant beagle's puppies, dive into the importance of being aware of avian flu and cyanobacteria around our pets, and share some amusing anecdotes about split pants, frozen yogurt, and alligators. We also touch on the art of overstaying jokes and pay tribute to the comedic genius of Leslie Nielsen. Lucy Butler is a special ed teacher who at the start of the 2021-2022 school year was given the assignment of working with all the students in her high school who had failed ninth grade the previous year. Lucy had been attending my on-line clinics through the summer and over Labor Day weekend she attended our Science Camp, so she was very excited to apply the concepts of constructional training to her classroom students. With the help of Dr Claire St Peter and two of Claire's former graduate students, Lucy began the process of changing the lives of her students. In Part 1 Lucy reviewed some of the major lessons from the first half of the year. In Part Two we move into the second half of the year with a discussion of SMART goals. The students were learning that felt good to improve, so now they were further empowered by being asked to develop their own goals. What did they want to improve? Learn about SMART goals and how to use a Ruleg matrix to teach complex concepts.
It's mid-July. School is out which means it is a great time to have a return visit with Lucy Butler. Lucy is a special ed teacher who at the start of the 2021-2022 school year was given the assignment of working with all the students in her high school who had failed ninth grade the previous year. Lucy is also a horse owner. She attended my on-line clinics through the summer of 2021. Over Labor Day weekend she also attended our Science Camp, so she was very excited to apply the concepts of constructional training to her classroom students. We did an interview with Lucy just as she was finishing up the first half of the school year. She was learning how to celebrate success and her students were thriving. You can listen to that interview in Episode 172 through 174. At the half way point through the school year some of the students were reassigned to other teachers so a natural experiment was taking place. Some of the students would be going through the whole year with Lucy, others would have her part time, others would not be working with her at all in the second half of the year. Of course we wanted to hear how the year turned out for her students. In part 1 of our conversation we review with Lucy some of the major lessons from the first half of the year and we learn how her students did through the full arc of the school year. If you have a child in school, you will very much want to listen to this podcast. (And yes, we do manage to connect the dots to horses.)
Buena Park School District Chief Academic Officer Dr. Yvette Cantu discusses the District commitment to providing every middle school student an opportunity to experience outdoor overnight science camp, building social skills and discovering a love for learning, and the excitement of seeing students experience snow for the first time.
On this thrilling conclusion of Science Camp Joe we answer several questions that we may have as Christians about what science tells us differently.

This week we continue to explore the connection between teaching programs that have been developed for classrooms and the work we do with our horses. We are joined by Dr. Claire St Peter. Claire received her PhD in Psychology with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis from the University of Florida in 2006. She is currently a Professor of Psychology, the Director of Graduate Training, and the Coordinator of the Behavior Analysis program area at West Virginia University. She serves as the current Editor-in-Chief for the journal Education and Treatment of Children. Her research focuses on improving outcomes for children who struggle in school, identifying generative effects of extinction, determining how well reinforcement-based teaching procedures work in application by novice implementers, and teaching others to use behavioral approaches. That's the academic bio. Claire is also a horse person. In 2021 she saw my Clicker Expo presentations and decided to take a deeper look at my work. She attended my virtual clinics and Science Camp. One of the things Claire enjoys are collaborations that let her blend her research interests with her passion for horses. I enjoy collaborations as well, so I was delighted when Claire started attending my virtual clinics. That's given us many opportunities to have some fascinating conversations. And now it's clearly time to share some of those conversations in this podcast. In this episode we begin with mastery based learning - what is it and why is it relevant to our horses? Claire ends by introducing us to super resurgence. You'll have to listen to the podcast to find out what that means and what it has to do with horses.
Lucy is a horse owner and a clicker trainer, and as you know by now she is also a special ed teacher. At the start of this school year she was assigned all the repeaters for freshman year, that is all the students who had failed ninth grade. Through her horse Lucy connected first with me and then through Science Camp with Dr Claire St Peter. Claire has been helping her develop a mastery-based system in which her students can thrive. In this part of the conversation we move from the classroom back to the barn to find out what Lucy what she has learned from her students that she is taking back to her horse.

She is host of the Horses for Future podcast, co-host of the Equiosity podcast, and author of The Click that Teaches and a whole host of other books and online courses about horse training. In today's podcast - the second of two - Alex and Manda continue to dive deeply into the fundamental question of our time - how do we bring people of widely disparate political views to a point where we all pull together to create a flourishing, generative future for people and planet? We have the answers. We just need to see the possibilities and be emotionally and psychologically prepared to apply them. So this is a behavioural problem now, not a technological one. I was tempted to call this episode: “Just Because People Tell You Something Can’t Be Done, Doesn’t Mean It Can’t Be Done”. But I thought that might be a little long so I called it instead: “Cow CAN Stand on Three Feet.” This is part 2 of our conversation with Kyle Hetzel. Kyle is a zoo keeper. In this episode he shares his experiences working with barnyard animals. Kyle started out working with big cats, sea lions, giraffes, wolves and other wild animals. But he is currently working in the children’s zoo section of a large west coast zoo. Kyle wants to bring what he has been learning from the wild animals to the handling of domestic animals. I met Kyle through my clinics and Science Camp. Kyle shared video of the work he’s been doing with the barnyard animals in the children’s zoo. It was so inspiring. There’s so much “just get it done” handling with horses and other hoofed animals. To see Kyle training the goats and horses under his care for voluntary medical procedures was inspiring. It’s good training. It’s caring training. There’s a lot here that needs to be shared, so that’s what we’re doing in this podcast. In this episode we talk about cooperative care in handling horses and other barnyard animals. What does cooperative care really mean? Kyle describes in detail the control his animals have throughout the training sessions. Learn about foot care for a steer named Slider, plus the goats, even the giraffes. I ask the question - how do you trim the hind feet of a giraffe? You can find out in this fascinating conversation with Kyle.
Alas, the Instagram Model discussion. Like a glass of wine in your shower, it had to happen. I've talked about this in my work on and off the red carpet for years, and today had an open convo with former model and fellow PSU alum @theofficalamandanicole to hash out the conundrum. End of ep includes interview bites with stars like Lea Michele, Stephanie Beatriz, Olivia Holt and more to prove we all think about it.

Science Camp was held over the weekend of Feb 19-21. Dominique and I didn’t want it to end so we invited one of the participants, Lisa Clifton Bumpass to come share an afternoon’s conversation with us. Lisa is a dog trainer turned zoo consultant. She’s been a regular attendee at the horse clinics I give in Half Moon Bay CA. What Lisa learns from the horses she takes back to the teams she works with in zoos. It is so much fun to think that the work we’re doing with horses is helping giraffes and alligators and other exotic animals to live more comfortable lives. In Part 1 of our conversation we talked about constructional training. This week we begin with the difference between extinguishing and abolishing a behavior. From there I ask Lisa to describe the team building she does in her consulting work. We got to watch a beautiful example of this at the beginning of Science Camp. One of the participants, Kyle Ketzel, works at the San Francisco zoo. He shared with us a video of one of the animals in his care. Since it’s a zoo, you might expect that it would be a video of a giraffe or an elephant, but no. The animal Kyle wanted us to see is Slider, a steer who lives in the children’s zoo. After the fall Science Camp Kyle learned he had only two weeks to prepare Slider for foot care. If the procedure couldn’t be done safely with Slider cooperating calmly throughout, he would need to be sedated. Kyle described Slider’s previous history with having his feet trimmed as a wrestling match, so Slider’s association with foot care was anything but positive. But what we saw was a relaxed animal who put his own foot up on the trimming block and who stood calmly participating in the procedure. Three people were involved in the foot trim. Kyle was at Slider’s head so he was the one in charge of reinforcing Slider. A second keeper was kneeling by Slider’s bent knee. She was helping to steady his leg, but even more than that, she was monitoring Slider’s pulse. A third person was trimming his hooves. They were all communicating with one another and with Slider. It was a beautiful example of great team work and great training. I wanted to Lisa to describe the team building work that she does so that is primarily what we talked about in this week’s episode.
Science Camp was held over the weekend of Feb 19-21. What a wonderful, head spinner of an event that was! Our conversation with Lisa began with a discussion of constructional; training - one of the main topics of Science Camp. That developed into a consideration of whose needs are being met in a training plan. Just because we are using positive reinforcement doesn’t mean the needs of the learner are being met. The overall training goals may still revolve around meeting our needs. Or we can swing the pendulum the other way so everything is centered around meeting our learner’s needs - often at the expense of our own well being. Or we can be truly constructional and meet the needs of everyone. As always, balance is everything. Good constructional training helps us to consider what each member of a training partnership needs to get from the interaction.

Helene Lawler is a professional dog trainer. She shares her house with 14 herding dogs so to say that she loves dogs is an understatement. Helene has been a regular listener to these podcasts. That’s what prompted her to attend our first virtual Science Camp which was held in Sept 2020. What ignited Helene’s imagination was the work we did on balance and rope handling. The day after Science Camp one of her clients presented her with what she thought was a poisoned cue issue. The situation could well have become a poisoned cue if it had continued much longer. But Helene was looking at all of her training with fresh eyes. Her client saw poisoned cues. Helene saw a balance issue - not in the dog, but in the handler. A few changes later and the dog was performing beautifully. Helene has continued to explore what equine balance has to offer the canine community, so of course we wanted her share what she has been discovering. Last week I had the amazing opportunity to chaperone the 6th Grade Science Camp. While I was there, I thought I might capture the sights and sounds of camp, through the voices of our students, parents and staff, who were taking part in this 3 day 2 night learning extravaganza called Science Camp!
I arrived home and walking up to the front door I saw this on our stairs. A pipe cleaner Tinker Bell. She laid there on the cement. Shadows being cast around her. My assumption was that she was the latest artistic creation of my daughter. Probably done at Science Camp that day to entertain the kids. As I took the photo, all I could think was, “Must have been a rough day on the streets of Neverland.” noC.

Learning the description of a design or artistic principle is not the same thing as being able to really use and understand it. You often need to try it, then see other examples, then try it some more, and over time it makes more and more sense. We’ve done lots of episodes on the principles that lead to great-looking embellishments that don’t detract from the photos. For today’s tutorial, you’ll watch me build, step-by-step, layers of embellishments for 4 different scrapbook pages. You can watch the video here. You do not need to have a Membership for this one–It’s free! If you like it and want more, please visit the Membership Information Page. Design Principles For Great Embellishments Once you’ve finished today’s episode, you might want to go back and watch other episodes on embellishments to refresh your memory on the principles: Available for free: Paperclipping 88 - Scale And Embellishments Available for Members: Paperclipping 94 - Embellishment Crescendo Paperclipping 67 - Scared To Embellish Paperclipping 25 - Layering Embellishments Paperclipping 14 - Cluster Your Embellishments Layouts From Today’s Episode: Except for the one full-page sheet, all of the patterned paper you see below came from my scrap tray. No new papers were cut in the making of these layouts. In fact, I used most of the pieces as I found them–already cut or punched! Aiden Rides 2-page 12×12 layout Aiden Rides Journaling to Aiden reads: Trinity got a new bike for her birthday so you’ve inherited her old one for a while. You were so excited to learn so Dad took you out and you were riding right away! The day after you learned you were out again and crashed, but you just kept at it. Side note: At first you wanted to remove the fringe but once you watched Pee Wee Herman you decided it as cool. Starbucks Adventures 12×12 layout Starbucks Adventures Journaling to my kids: Before Dad started working from home, these visits to Starbucks were a regular event. Dad and I could get some work done while you guys hooked your DS’s together to play a joint game. Nice out-of-the-house adventure. ‘08. December Daily Page - Gift Wrapping 6×7 minibook December Daily-Gift Wrapping Journaling reads: One of my favorite parts of Christmas…dressing up the gifts and placing them under the tree. Love And Ice Cream Cones 2-page 12×12 layout Love And Ice Cream Cones Journaling to Aiden and Trinity reads: While Blake was gone to Science Camp for three days with the 5th grade, we took you two to Crazy Subs for some Rootbeer Float Swirl ice cream cones. We love those huge 79 cent cones. We also love snuggling with you and joking and playing while we eat. 2-5-09 Alright, scrapbookers..are you ready to gather some patterned scraps, some brads or buttons, and maybe a chipboard swirl or rub-on border to add some pizazz to a layout? The key to getting good at this is to practice. I can’t wait to see what you have to show me.
