44. Slow by designs Kleine Deutsche Lehre Teil 1 Nr.1 GESCHLECHTSWÖRTER Here's the gist of why I'm doing this series: Learning German was always high on my list of life-long achievement goals. While I speak reasonably well for someone who has spent a total of one 2 years actually living and speaking the language on a daily basis (not consecutively), the grammar side of it has always eluded my brain. (I'm a very slow learner.) Also, professionally I'm a cellist and recently I began teaching a native German speaker and that student would rather not have it in English. I'm cool with that because it is a chance for me to improve and use the German I know. However, I'm quite nervous about it every week and find it hard to form nice sentences, etc. I'll be using an old German Grammar Lesson Book entitled Kleine Deutsche Lehre or "The Little German Lesson" (anyone with a better translation, please let me know). It walks one through the types of word classes, parts of speech, and conjugations. This will be my own study of Grammar. Today's episode is about Geschlechtswörter, or the articles: der, die, das; ein, eine, ein. #learngerman #germangrammar #conjugationingerman #germanlanguage --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/slowbydesigns/message

This is a reading of "Thanksgiving Day", a POEM by Lydia Maria Child. At first, my eye stopped over the opening of the poem because of a phrase that is well known and oft-repeated, or at least it was as a child. Then it became more of a nostalgic experience due to my current living situation, living abroad. That first phrase goes like this, "Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go". Or does it? LOL I was quite surprised to find out that there were two differences that I had not previously known. Listen to find out. ________________ Subscriptions or turned on for $4.99 per month. Episode 35 -- A German story entitled "Die Fliege, die in die Schule Ging" or The Fly, That Went to School This is a special episode. I received my very first message not too long after I uploaded the previous episode. A big THANK YOU to Seth for sending me a message. My apologies for taking soooo long to acknowledge it. That was due mostly to the fact that, in my excitement, I was unable to figure out how to listen to the message! Yes, that is ineptitude or perhaps just not trying hard enough (not to mention how busy the summer had been). Regardless, I finally did and it feels great to hear from a listener! Please be sure to say if you would like your message played "on air" or not (I had not mentioned that previously, and I don't want to take any chances of infringing on privacy). It's been a while since my last upload here and much longer since my last Norwegian upload. As you can see from this upload, I am still on the fence about dedicating this podcast to one language, i.e. German, Norwegian or English. Mostly, I am ruling out English but based on stats from this summer, German has gained in popularity. I may turn this podcast into a German focused one. This episode (34) is mostly me going through two stages in Unit 2 of Conjunctions in Level 1. I got into a sort of zone about three weeks ago and have not missed a day since. I have also found that completing an entire LEVEL before calling it a day on Duolingo has been more helpful in remembering some of the topic's vocabulary. Probably due to the very repetitive nature of both Duolingo and simply seeing the vocabulary multiple times throughout since I remain in the same topic. You get a raw and unedited version in this episode. I go through the level without a break and you hear me making comments along the way. With any luck and some hard work, I might begin understanding a Norwegian speaker at a very basic level. Hey, if you like this sort of thing send a donation to PayPal.me/travelingcello. I've done it! I set out to finish all of the stories in part 1 of Märchen und Erzählungen (Fairytales and Stories) and here it is. This is Story #15, the final installment from a book for beginners. "Die Vier Brüder" The Four Brothers is a rather relatable story in that we all separate as we go on with life, but come back together from time to time. Life is never fair and never will be. Just as in the winning brother who just so happened to win due to a serendipitous action and order in which it was taken. That's the way it was with those four brothers and that's how it is with us. The title of this poem is a fairly well-known saying in English, but how many know that the saying comes from a poem? Do you know that it comes from a poem? I'm personally that guy who always sees the negative. I wish I was more like the woman, the man's wife (presumably) who slept soundly, "waited to see", and didn't look for problems before they cropped up. This story is taken from book of Fairy Tales and Narratives written just for beginners. The Title of which is Märchen und Erzählungen für Anfänger, edited by H. A. Guerber. These stories are all great if you are looking for a better understanding of how to build up sentences with an ever increasing vocabulary. What they are not is a set of ground-breaking forms of literary genius. Although, I happen to think highly of them in terms of useful educational material. :) They are repetitive, but deliberately so. Just as the editor mentions in the Preface. This story, Number 5 in the sequence, is not only a repetitive telling, it is also very long. It is almost like having two stories in one. 5. Der Riese und Das Kind is quite the long, drawn out formulation. It took about 20 minutes of reading to get through the 4 pages of story. What can be said? Learning a language is rough work, with difficulties in correct pronunciation, or at least good enough that someone can understand what you are saying. Not only that, but you must master sufficient vocabulary to give yourself a chance at being able to enter into conversation in the first place. And finally, Grammar. It seems that Duolingo is a good place to begin with vocabulary. After which, start reading books away from the app to increase understanding and pick up more vocab. while learning to recognize standard sentence structure. My goal is simply to pick up vocab. little by little. At this point, there is virtually no chance that I will ever use it with a native speaker so, just for fun. From a book for beginners learning German, Märchen und Erzählungen, comes story #3 titled: Der Hausvater. These stories all are effectively lessons in Vocabulary and Grammar. They aren't just another set of engaging stories. As the editor relates in the Preface, they are carefully written to repeat throughout so as to help the reader better remember the vocabulary. Have you ever heard about people that are professional reciters? That is, those who train their brains to remember vast amounts of information and turn around to recite it from memory. I had heard that they all use a certain technique that associates words or figures with certain images or ideas. Many of those reciters have said that the more silly the association the more likely they are to recall the target vocabulary, etc. In a way, It seems that these stories are quite like the reciters' techniques for memorizing. The stories presented in this volume are very silly stories that have contain an aspect that is quite absurd, according to our reality. Story #3, Der Hausvater, has two extremely silly elements. 1) There is an old man who is scarcely as big as a little child. 2) The traveler must ask who he assumes to be the Man of the House, but is referred to another man, and then another, an so. 3) (Listen in to find out if there is a third element of silliness. --Is it about age?) There's a great book for German learners who already have a decent grasp of the language to practice. Märchen und Erzählungen für Anfänger, by: H. A. Guerber Fairy Tales for Beginners is a book specifically written and designed for learners of German. They don't write stories like this nowadays. It is worth your while to check out. With all the repetition you are likely to remember more grammar and vocabulary. The author continually makes reminders of initial vocab. and grammar in a rather flowing way. Yes, it is redundant and no native speakers would likely ever read a book like this to their own kids. (Tell me if I'm mistaken.) Hi and welcome! This podcast is not really about language or reading helpful stories. It is not really about learning vocabulary. The purpose of this podcast is to let out some long-time, pent-up steam. I have always liked learning languages and have been conversant in German for about 15 years now. Chinese is something of a chance encounter but am not able to get around but not quite able to hold my own. Not too long after going abroad to learn German I had realized that Norwegian would be somewhat of an easier undertaking after having become conversational in German. Not only that, it would be fun to learn something from the language of my ancestors. SO, here I am, posting episodes of me learning Norwegian vocabulary with Duolingo, reading little stories in German, and also reading some poetry and prose in English. These are things that I take quite a bit of pleasure in. Although I'd like to have hundreds of listeners, I don't expect to have but a few if that.
