In this 10 minute gratitude meditation, you will experience feeling grateful. Practicing this is one way how to improve mindfulness. This is a 15 minute meditation that focuses on connecting with gratitude in my series of meditations to avoid emotional overwhelm and anxiety. When current events are upsetting, meditating can calm your mind, quiet racing thoughts, settle anxiety and help you to feel more grounded and centered. Emotions can start to overwhelm. It's important to find calm in the storm. A guided meditation that focuses on gratitude and all the good things in your life can help to shift what you see, especially during difficult times and much news is bad. This 15-minute guided meditation focuses on connecting with positive feelings of gratitude and appreciation for those who have supported you specifically and then generally to all the things that we can be grateful for -- all the various elements that make our lives possible. This helps lift your mood and give you energy. I chose the outer space background because sometimes it helps to take a really big picture view to step back and realize how much we're blessed to be supported by friends, family, community, networks of workers, our ancestors, nature—all the elements that make our very life possible—are things that we can pause to appreciate. Sometimes, when we face so much negative news, it's hard to find reasons to feel positive and to make time for appreciation of all that is good. But, it's precisely at those times when life is so challenging that it's more important than ever to acknowledge all the good in your life and extend appreciation for all that makes your life possible. Gratitude can be very empowering, particularly when things are difficult. Meditation practice can also boost happiness and boost immunity. Studies show that people who practice meditation are less likely to get sick and if they become sick, tend to be sicker for shorter times. Meditation saved my life and helped me recover from rape trauma. I was required in a meditation teacher training course to create a podcast explaining why I meditate and I decided I should share the complete truth, because meditation is a powerful source of healing. It's difficult to put into words how meditation has changed my life. Through meditation, I connected with my Higher Self. I realized I'm much more than this body. There were times when I thought I didn't have the strength or courage to go on, but meditation helped me realize that my spirit is free -- no person can harm my soul. My soul, the soul in each of us, is connected to a higher power that is a source of goodness and strength. Meditation builds that connection. This is still painful for me to share - 40 years later - but I want to help others heal and move forward to have full, healthy and happy lives. Healing from rape is not a straight path. I've had ups and downs. Panic attacks and post-traumatic stress disorder. I would run away in the opposite direction if a man I thought might touch me came near. It destroyed relationships when I was younger. For years, I thought it was my fault, before I got the tools for my self-healing. If you're having a hard time, it's okay. It's normal. You are a beautiful person and no one can touch the inner you. Meditation lets you feel that, not in your mind, but in your heart. Trust in goodness. It exists. I've created a career out of helping people create health and happiness and it is my passion to support others so they can avoid any of the suffering I have experienced. I support you. One (1) out of every Five (5) women in America have been a target of sexual assault. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/15/hea... Many people don't have the strength to speak up, but it's not their fault. You know women who have suffered this and simply aren't saying it. It's okay. You will be okay. Keep believing. And, meditation helps. Mindfulness helps. You realize that you are not your thoughts, you are not your fears. You are a strong, resilient, amazing person. I studied about meditation and ptsd, meditation and panic attacks and meditation for anxiety and depression. I learned how beneficial meditation and mindfulness is for healing. I wrote several articles on this topic. I'm the perfect example of how meditation and mindfulness can change your life. Learn what is "green exercise" and the scientific benefits of outdoor green exercise - what scientific research tells us about how exercising outdoors is good for mood, mental health, brain fitness, and physical fitness and is a natural way to reduce stress. Why do green exercise? Green exercise has many mind body benefits. Green exercise can increase mindfulness, reduce blood pressure and improve sleep quality, among other benefits, according to scientific studies. Mindfulness is increased by sense stimulation that then increases our present moment awareness. We experience green exercise mindfully because we are absorbed by the beauty and sensual delights, we lose ourself in the moment. Think about how much better you feel after you spend time in nature - more relaxed, yet energized. It's very restorative and research confirms this—it's not your imagination. In this podcast, I discuss 2 studies in particular - one that measures how the same exercise performed outdoors leaves us feeling less tired and more refreshed and another that shows that the same exercise performed outdoors helps us to sleep more deeply and wake feeling more refreshed. Other research studies that I have read show that simple exposure to the color green is restorative, so if you can't get outdoors, look at lush, green nature scenes online, for a virtual forest bathing experience. (remember what the mind perceives as real provides the same mental benefits as doing the real activity) A popular green exercise in Japan is Forest Bathing. You may wonder what is forest bathing or shinrin-yoku (森林浴) in Japanese (it is also called sēnlínyù (森林浴) in Mandarin and sanlimyok (산림욕) in Korean), according to Wikipedia. It is a specific practice of intentionally walking in a forest for health benefits. It began in Japan in the 1980s and is resurging in popularity. You can learn more about the practice here: http://www.shinrin-yoku.org/shinrin-y.... Interestingly, research continues to substantiate the scientific benefits for health such as improved mood, sleep, attention, energy, happiness and even a stronger immune system. In this podcast, Shirley, a leading mindfulness health educator, explains why developing awareness of breathing is an essential tool for enhancing the mind body connection and for creating inner peace and calm. She gives an introduction to conscious breathing by leading a breathing exercise for beginners to provide you with a direct experience of how simply focusing on the breath lowers your breathing rate and creates calm. Drawing attention to your individual breathing pattern is not only relaxing, but also improves your ability to be present and more mindful in general. Many people wonder why measuring your breathing rate or doing conscious breathing creates calm. Here, you learn that the breath is a physical activity is the gateway to the autonomic nervous system (part of nervous system that functions without our conscious control). Cultivating breath awareness is your first step toward consciously tapping into otherwise unconscious physical activities and leads to developing patience, concentration and the ability to quiet your mind. It's also the first step toward beginning a meditation practice. Meditation and visualization are among the tools that Shirley teaches you how to use to reduce stress, feel happier, boost energy and improve overall feelings of well-being. Practicing paced breathing will help you with your meditation practice by improving your mind body connection and by improving your skills of concentration and focus. This breathing exercise helps you create calm and has been shown in studies to reduce borderline hypertension and to reduce hot flashes, when practiced regularly. Also, if you learn easy techniques - like paced breathing - it can help you get started with meditation much more easily. Paced breathing connects you with your breath which improves mindfulness and present moment awareness. Paced breathing has been shown in studies to help reduce hot flash symptoms and to reduce borderline hypertension. The ideal rate is 5 to 6 breath cycles per minute—one inhale and one exhale for every 10-12 seconds. Breathing exercises affect the nervous system and slow controlled breathing reduces the stress response and helps the mind and body to relax. I have years of experience teaching people how to start a meditation practice. In this podcast, I provide you with a simple practice that you can do anywhere and it will immediately help to focus your attention, increase calm and help you clear your mind of stressful thoughts. Mindful sound listening is one of the techniques to get better at meditation. This is a great skill if you have never meditated before. If you say, "I've never meditated before, but I want to start. Where do I begin?" If you're wondering, "Why can't I meditate?" Or, if you simply want to know how to get better at meditation, this podcast will help you. In this podcast, I share 5 tips on how to prevent overeating and avoid holiday weight gain. The average person gains one and a half pounds during the holidays. People who struggle to manage weight, tend to gain even more. And, studies show that people tend not to lose this weight, which easily can add up over the years. These tips are based on proven scientific methods and help you stop holiday weight gain and avoid adding holiday pounds. These points are directed at raising awareness of what you're eating and paying attention and preparing for what stimulates overeating. These proven tips to stop holiday weight gain include: 1. Eat something light before you go and drink a full glass of water. Avoid being famished as that triggers overeating. 2. Graze and eat slowly. It’s okay to enjoy holiday treats, but instead of taking large portions, enjoy a sampler plate. Eat slowly and pace yourself. With drinks, enjoy a glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. Not only will this help you drink less, it also ensures that you won’t become dehydrated, as alcohol can be a diuretic. 3. Eat mindfully. Taste, smell, experience the flavors, textures and dimensions of every bite. Explore the flavors and share what you’re experiencing with others. Savor all the holiday treats. 4. Learn how to politely say no to more. No one wants to offend a hospitable host. At the same time, you don’t want to overeat. Practice what you will say to express your appreciation for the abundance of tasty treats, but stick firm to your own personal limits and eat each bite with intention. 5. Know your triggers for overeating. We each have triggers for overeating behaviors that may come from the context or be rooted in emotional memories. If you prepare beforehand, you can avoid being triggered into overeating.
