In this week's episode of How to Be Human, we will be taking a deep dive into the topic of insecurities. Many of us — at one point or another in our lives — have struggled with low self-esteem. Its constant presence can influence the way in which we live our lives. It can be caused by various factors such as past traumas, social anxiety, fear of rejection, and loneliness. However, once we realize our own strengths and importance, when we see the ways we've been hurt and can feel these issues on a deeper level, we can then break free from our insecurities. Therefore, changing our beliefs about the world, our perception of ourselves, and the ways in which we face adversity can help us feel more secure in ourselves. This allows us to build stronger connections with our friends, family, and strangers and permeates into other aspects of our life. The long-term solution to overcoming insecurity is self-acceptance. When we accept ourselves for who we are, we are able to shed our insecurities because we no longer care whether we are being judged. This, however, is a lot harder said than done. In today's episode, we will be sharing some effective strategies and coping mechanisms to help you become the most secure version of yourself. We also touch on the topics of social media's influence on our self-worth, how to feel more grounded in ourselves, and stories from our own experiences. Stay tuned as we explore this topic and divulge some of our best tips with you!Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, or on your favorite podcast platform. Guest Jennie Tranter decided to try on a new persona in college and be more outgoing and social than she'd been previously. Academically, having desired to be a doctor, she loaded on the science classes. She took a religion course to fill a distributive requirement and was completely taken by the idea that, unlike in science, there may not be just one right answer and she may have to become more comfortable with uncertainty. She became a religion major and, after a study abroad program in Europe, doubled down on her German studies with her eye on getting back to Europe after graduation. Despite a heap of uncertainty, she ultimately found a way to do that, but kept coming back to the U.S. and trying new things.Eventually, she leaned into the international lifestyle and worked at the intersection of finance and international relations—where she thought she'd be happy. While elements of her life were fulfilling, she sought something different and ultimately worked with a coach to bring more clarity to things. She uncovered that the values that she prized were beauty—particularly being out and about in nature—and excellence. When she took some time to figure out what that meant, she took on a volunteer opportunity that made her remember her early desires to help people. Combining the elements she knew were vital to her transformation, she began coaching others in liminal circumstances and pursued a career in psychotherapy. In this episode, find out from Jennie how uncovering the many elements of who you are and grounding decisions in values can lead you to where you need to be…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. SummarySleep is the most important thing a person can do for themself. Getting 8 hours of quality sleep equals better cognition (thinking), better body function, less disease, and a longer lifespan. Morbidity and MortalityAt least 20% of automobile accidents have been linked to sleep deprivation. Teenagers that start school earlier get lower test scores than those who start later. Doctors make more errors and kill more people when sleep deprived. Without sleep, a person will die. Other AnimalsAll known animals sleep. Some bats sleep almost 20 hours a day, while giraffes sleep < 2 hours a day. Birds and marine mammals can sleep half of their brain at a time. Key Points1. Sleep is a physiologic state that consists of various stages including light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep.2. Most all people need > 7 hours of sleep a night to function optimally. Many of us are functioning sub-optimally and undermining our longevity through a lack of sleep.3. Many medical diseases effect sleep. Being unhealthy appears to be both a cause of bad sleep as well as an effect of getting suboptimal sleep.4. Improving sleep starts with improving lifestyle. Paying attention to light exposure is also very important. Grounding, cognitive behavioral therapy, certain types of sound, and sleep hygiene can also be useful. Many supplements can be helpful as well. Medications should be used as a last resort to help with sleep. References- Walker, Matthew. Why We Sleep; Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams. Johannes A. Niederhauser argues that death is a central notion in Martin Heidegger's work on the questions being and time, and even takes us to the core of Heidegger's entire thinking path. Thus, Heidegger is not merely approaching death as an existentialist problem, of how to become authentically mortal. Heidegger is suggesting that the abstract concealment and exploitation of death is how the modern project attempts to bring in and enforce a different way of being human, an inhuman way of being human. This is achieved via the exclusive absolutization of technical knowledge, which would perceive everything, even death, as a problem to be solved. In contrast to this view, Niederhauser suggests that we must view death as an "utter non-availability". This involves that we think the relationship between technology and death, and also language and death, in terms of the way death limits the powers of both to "make available". From these ideas, he suggests it may be possible to “dwell in death” (as a cut), and in so doing overcome death's abstract concealment, by confronting the irreducible and singular personal relation to our concrete death, i.e. “that we have to die”. What is to be “won” in this dwelling is potentially a real human ethics that can seriously entertain the question "what does it mean to die well?", thereby transcending epistemic instrumentalization of rationality. What does it mean to become the type of being that, instead of unconsciously desiring to control, manipulate, eradicate or possess death with instrumental rationality, becomes the type of being that can really be, and that can really ground a new world in or as time.
Matthew Zaremba is a multidisciplinary artist best known for his minimalist illustrations examining the human condition and the intricacies of the head and the heart. Boston-based and internationally recognized, Zaremba is a published visual storyteller whose work spans a myriad of mediums from print to paintings to public murals. Fashion brand 2006 Bodega has been curating the finest selection of footwear, apparel, and accessories for men and women from over 100 brands. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: The counterculture to internet access Grounding yourself by going analog Fostering creativity in your kids Tapping into the creative realm of kids Matthew's definition of emotional optimism Episode Highlights: The Counterculture to Internet Access While the internet is a bridge for communicating with other people, sometimes, you can also get lost in it. Therefore, it's important to ground yourself by going analog. It's part of dealing with the human experience – emotions, feelings, and reactions to the world. For example, if your art is known through the lens of a digital presentation, people are absorbing it with their eyes through a screen. But at the same time, the substance of it is so far from that. Although there are pieces that are reactionary to that, a lot of it actually is social commentary. Using a typewriter or recording on a tape or a reel where you're connected to a physical conduit makes everything more intentional because you can't just delete it off your feed. There's a ground effect that allows you to be present. Tapping into the Creative Realm of Children As adult artists, they try to find that unbiased, unjaded realm of creativity that only kids can do. For instance, abstract artists get back to the naive state of not being influenced by the outside world. In other words, it's untethered. It exists. It just is. On Emotional Optimism Matthew relates emotional optimism to survival. As bad as it gets, it's most likely going to be a temporary thing. No matter what this is right now, it's got to get better than this. People are getting anxious and it is a huge inconvenience. It is very taxing on all of us for a myriad of reasons, but it has to get better. If you're breathing, things are still moving. Though it's one of the greatest privileges in life to have a body, it can also be a difficult and complicated gift, especially for women. Many of us are in a constant battle of trying to understand and be kind to our bodies. In today's episode, we discuss barriers and fears that hinder our relationship with our bodies, and how we're working to heal those wounds. Can you remember a time when you felt neutral and carefree about your body? Anna discusses how her family's constant commentary on each other's weight trickled down to her at a very young age and contributed to her eating disorders later in life. Though Nina made it out mostly unscathed from that kind of criticism, she remembers how her body development brought unwanted attention at a young age. In adulthood, factors like illness, abuse, sex, and relationships became crutial to how we took care of our bodies. Over time, we've learned to check in and treat it with the tenderness that it deserves. Mindful movement and self care aren't just buzz words–they're tools to help heal and develop your relationship with your body. We live in a cesspool of contamination, but with so much of modern life dependent on toxic energies, does it even make sense for us to try to go completely off the grid? The truth is, no, but luckily, we don't have to. So, how can we coexist with harmful vibrations without putting our physical and spiritual health at risk? In this episode, Athleticism Performance Coach, Justin Frandson shares how to reconnect to nature in a world that doesn't want us to. Three Curiosity-Driven Takeaways How to get into the habit of recharging our energies Is there a way to keep ourselves grounded to nature, no matter how busy day to day life gets? Why ‘planet-conscious' technologies may be more dangerous than we think Are solar power and electric cars doing more to help us, or hurt us? How to pinpoint how toxic we really are How can we tell if we're being impacted by toxic energies more than the average person? Guest Bio- Justin Frandson is an Athleticism Performance Coach who has worked with countless amateur and professional athletes over the past two decades. Since seeing his athletes breaking down from the excessive levels of EMF from their SMART watches, wireless earbuds and electric cars he has tested hundreds of homes and clients. Today, he sells the Grounding and Faraday Bags at doctor clinics throughout the country. The Grounding Bags are hand-mined crystals with moisture and magnetic properties to ground and repel EMF, all for a deeper night's sleep. How might a bowhead whale tell the history of the Arctic? Grounding us in a history of the Bering Strait that listens deeply to ecology and the more-than-human, Bathsheba Demuth invites us to expand our future and past visions of human society in this episode. Adding nuance to our understanding of Arctic history, Bathsheba turns our attention towards the undercurrents of resistance – from whales avoiding commercial whaling ships to whalers and miners confronting the violence of the jobs into which they were forced. Bathsheba then challenges us to move beyond the logic of the slaughterhouse, wherein we are alienated from the ways our energy and goods are produced, and to instead build towards a radically imagined future of empathetic and connected relations. With this, she considers a future outside of apocalyptic visions, rooted in the understanding that the shape of the world today is neither permanent nor pre-destined. Her writing on these subjects has appeared in publications from The American Historical Review to The New Yorker. Bathsheba Demuth is an Assistant Professor of History and Environment and Society at Brown University. An environmental historian, she writes and thinks with the lands and seas of the Russian and North American Arctic. Her interest in northern environments and cultures began when she was 18 and moved to the village of Old Crow in the Yukon. For over two years, she mushed huskies, hunted caribou, fished for salmon, and otherwise learned to survive in the taiga and tundra. Her prize-winning first book, Floating Coast: An Environmental History of the Bering Strait (W.W. Norton) was named a Nature Top Ten Book of 2019 and Best Book of 2019 by NPR, Barnes and Noble, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal among others. From the archive to the dog sled, she is interested in how the histories of people, ideas, places, and other-than-human species intersect. Music by Eliza Eden, Georgia Sackler, and Dana Anastasia. There's a difference between making a judgment and being judgemental. The former relies on intuition and the latter stems from a place of criticism. Judgment can be a way to maintain safety, but unhelpful and overly critical comments are usually a manifestation of our own insecurities. Not only that, but it can amplify those feelings of low self-esteem. As a culture, we've gotten so comfortable criticizing people. We pick apart celebrities' fashion choices, we comment on a relative's weight gain, and our eyes widen when we see what's inside a stranger's shopping cart. Women especially are taught to connect through being judgmental of others and themselves. We're working on ending that cycle for ourselves and the people that we surround ourselves with. On today's episode, we unpack ways in which we've judged and been judged. We chat about our struggles with the judgment Tarot and understanding the energy of judgment. We also discuss practices and tools that have helped us work on becoming more compassionate and kind to ourselves and the people in our lives. Your child comes home from school angry and upset. He throws a temper tantrum for seemingly no reason at all. You respond with the same anger and send him to his room in frustration. His bad behavior is not tolerable, so you punish him for his outburst. You and your daughter spend a fun day at the beach. When it is time to go home, she protests and starts screaming at you. She is not ready to leave and is not going to leave. The louder she yells, the angrier you get. By the time you are able to drag her to the car, you are emotionally exhausted and tell her this is the last time you are ever taking her to the beach. As a parent, is there a way to manage emotional outbursts successfully in our kids? Do our kids understand their emotions? They probably don't even know the words to describe feelings such as nervousness, anxiety, fear or worry. During a Smart Sex, Smart Love podcast, Mina Blatt, a therapist with The Center for Relationship and Sexual Health in Royal Oak, Michigan, provides some strategies and advice for parents to help their kids understand and manage their emotions effectively.Grounding, breathing techniques and time outs are three of several ideas Mina explores during the podcast. She also talks about how parents can manage their own emotions better when their kids have uncontrollable outbursts. Remember, we are role models for our kids. They are always watching and learning from their parents' behaviors, Mina points out. Embodiment can be considered in different ways: bringing something into physical reality from a more subtle dimension, as when creative ideas are manifested through art, and being fully present and inhabiting the body, as when spiritual qualities such as compassion become grounded in the body. The mind tends to grasp and hold ideas like a possession. The superficial mental satisfaction of feeling like we've understood something we've read or studied can keep us from incorporating it in the body and in our lives. We are not the “doer,” but we can be instruments for bringing the unknown into the known when we are like a hollow bamboo that the creative force can move through. A lot of being able to express creative process has to do with mitigating or eliminating resistance. This takes time—for example, through meditation practice or what life teaches us. When confronted with necessity, we embody what is needed in the moment. By wholeheartedly embracing what we are passionate about as an expression of consciousness in the body, we may see past the limits of the body to what we are beyond it. Our impermanence is part of the mystery of the human experience. We can be a work of art that is useful for what is at hand in the moment. Our ego is often challenged by the idea of a ‘simple answer' or a ‘simple truth', we become skeptical, suspicious, and uncertain because we've been convinced that if we're not research experts our own knowing or knowledge cannot be true because life is so incredibly complex. Fortunately, the simple answer can often be the most helpful but it is only made simple by one's willingness to accept it and remove the complexity that the individual seeks to project onto it. Earthing and grounding are one of those simple truths in the world of health and healing and we discuss in detail why it's necessary for anyone that is experiencing illness, disease, excess body fat, or even stress… so basically everyone… to get their bare feet onto the green grass. In This Episode We Cover:What is grounding/earthing?How can it help the body reduce disease-causing free radicals and inflammationHow do the electromagnetic signals in our world impact the human body***Join the Busy Mum's Facebook Group here: https://mattylansdown.com/BusyMothersFBgroup ***--SOCIAL MEDIA--MATTHEW TITMUS / SHAMANIC ENERGY MEDICINE TASMANIAWebsite: https://www.shamanicenergymedicinetasmania.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/healinglaunceston/--MATTY LANSDOWNInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattylansdown/Join the Busy Mum's Facebook Group here: https://mattylansdown.com/BusyMothersFBgroup--Thanks for checking out the show. When it comes down to it, pessimism and optimism are protection methods. One lets us relish in negativity and victimhood, and the other leaves us soothed and hopeful. Somewhere between those two extremes exists realism, and the goal is to live in that gray space. Sounds simple, right? In today's episode, we discuss how that's not exactly the case. Women are really tapped into avoiding being labeled negative and difficult, so oftentimes we feel the need to be optimistic. But the truth is, women can find power in pessimism. We discuss examples of the pros and cons of optimism and pessimism, and we also talk about our pessimism for the patriarchy, but our optimism for acceptance of traditionally excluded marginalized communities. I invite you all to rock your body and mind in this week's episode with two world-leading experts on healing chronic pain, Dr. Matt Cook and Dr. John Lieurance. Dr. Matt Cook runs BioReset Medical, while Dr. John Lieurance runs Advanced Rejuvenation. Both of which are incredible facilities if you're looking for next-level healing for chronic illnesses. This recording coincided with my week-long procedures at BioReset Medical. The three of us were able to get to the nitty-gritty of the cutting-edge therapies they swear by, including ozone injections, stem cell peptides, PRP, the Weberneedle laser, and many more. They also share their extensive knowledge on the common causes of pain and how the body's internal landscape sends out different pain signals. I'm feeling like a new man after the miraculous work executed by Dr. Matt Cook's team, so it's an honor to share this experience with the community. I'm no stranger to chronic pain, and I know there are millions out there looking for solutions they won't find in their allopathic doctors' office (God knows, I've tried).
