My sleep habits started to change in my 40s. Then came my 50s, and my sleep got even worse. What changed in my life? Scientific Basis for Heart-Mind Connection * The heart's intelligence: Not just a blood pump. * Heart's neural network: Approximately 40,000 neurons. * Information flow: Heart sends more information to the brain than vice-versa. * Pre-cognitive reactions: The heart reacts milliseconds before conscious thought. * Research backing: Harvard, University of California, and others. * Implication: The body "feels" the terrain before the brain maps it. * Ignoring the heart/intuition leads to reverting to the old baseline. * Tuning into the heart and mind together makes the new terrain familiar. 6. Alignment and States of Being * The principle of "alignment first, action second." * Transition from "contraction" to "expansion." * Defining "contraction": * Physical sensations: Chest caving in, shallow breath, racing mind, heaviness. * Psychological association: The old baseline, fear of the unknown. * Defining "expansion": * Physical sensations: Open chest, deep diaphragm breathing, relaxed shoulders, clear mind. * Psychological association: The new terrain, confidence in the new identity. * Leading with expansion allows "doing" to flow naturally. 7. Practical Exercise: Locking in the Leap * Purpose: To ground the leap in the present moment. * Step 1: Identify Contraction. * Think of things put off since the leap. * Feel bodily sensations of tightening (contraction). * Recognize this as the "old you" trying to keep you "safe." * Step 2: Imagine Expansion. * Visualize the desired outcome of the task being done. * Notice bodily sensations of opening and softening (expansion). * Recognize this as the leap being grounded. * Step 3: Future Action Protocol. * Do not act from contraction. * Pause, find expansion. * Then, move forward. 8. Reinforcing and Stabilizing the Leap * Keeping the leap "unshakable." * Training the mind to spot evidence of the leap. * Recognizing new responses vs. reactions. * "Proving the leap in real time" (Price Pritchett's concept). * Looking for proof while living it, not waiting for external validation. * Past leaps may have been unrecognized. * Opportunities appearing in unexpected ways ("ways that you know not of," referencing biblical phrasing). * "Trusting the unknown" (Price Pritchett's concept). * Recording and acknowledging this evidence in real time. 9. Anchoring the New Frequency (Heart-Mind Lock-In) * A guided breathing exercise. * Technique: Slow, easy breaths through the nose, belly expansion, shoulder softening. * Focus: Calling up the feeling of already living the leap and expansion. * Anchoring the feeling through bodily checks (shoulders, neck). * Establishing the new "home frequency" as living from expansion. 10. Making Choices for Stability * Every choice either stabilizes the leap or slides back to the baseline. * Key check-ins: * Feeling state: Contraction or expansion? * Heart and mind connection: Working together or split? * The power of choice: Choosing expansion, choosing Kokoro, choosing to live in the new state. 11. All the books, all the podcasts- where have they gone?I've been writing and podcasting for more than 10 years; I used to listen to Robb Wolf and The Paleo Solution, Jimmy Moore and Livin La Vida Low Carb, Mark Sisson and his Primal Podcast, and many others. Don't hear much from Robb Wolf anymore- Jimmy Moore is locked in prison for God's sake- and Primal goes on, and is just kind of Paleo with a different name…Now, the cutting edge seems to be focussed on Carnivore, with Sean Baker and others. But is this carnivore pivot really all that much different than Paleo or Primal?Not really. Those are all just words that encapsulate a certain set of ideas- that living in a more ancestral way, more in keeping with that of our forebears, is far healthier and more beneficial than the modern, pharmaceutical and processed foods-based version of the present day. In other words, simpler is better.Carnivore could easily be another word for Paleo. It's just another, more extreme way to practice the way our ancestors lived. It is certainly A way, and a very simple way to have a ‘restart' with your health, that is possibly really messed up in the present day.I mean, you could call your paleo type of diet ‘The Great Grandparents diet', or the ‘Post nuclear apocalypse Diet', and the results would be very similar. The idea is just to get away from the modern conventions and pronouncements of current ‘experts' and getting back to timeless sorts of recommendations from the past. Time-tested and proven methods of health and wellness that have stood the test of time- of millennia- and not just those ideas that are being pushed by Big Medicine and the modern trinity of Pharmaceuticals, Big Food, and the Government .You know: Moe, Larry and Curly. The EXPERTS!I'm being a bit facetious, but in light of Fauci and the Covid disaster, along with the Low Fat food recommendations of the past 60 to 70 years, and the endless recommendations of Vegetable Seed Oils in our diets, well, the “experts” aren't looking too expert really, are they?And let's not forget the Exercise recommendations- “run long distances to gain complete fitness and above all, heart health…”. More nonsense in place of simple strength training, walking, and stretching! Grounding barefoot by walking on the earth, rather than sprint-running to exhaustion in timed races on tracks with over-cushioned shoes.I'm sure you get the idea. The Paleo Diet and Lifestyle hasn't gone away, not at all. Maybe the erstwhile leaders have left the field, moving on to other endeavors. But the movement is intact, as strong as it was when it was being promoted by figures such as Weston A. Price, the dentist who noticed in the 1920's and 30's the wonderful health of pre-industrial people who ate their ancestral diets and moved in the manner in which they had evolved over long periods of time. All of the tenets of Paleo are intact, and correct. Eliminate most of ‘modern medicine', including most vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs, especially for our children. Go back to ancient leaders, like Hippocrates, who said in old Greek times to “Let thy medicine be thy food, and thy food be thy medicine”. This is timeless truth!Eat good, basic foods like meat and dairy. Fermented dairy is best, and raw dairy is better than processed! I'm in the final days before closing on my St. Augustine home, and I forgot how truly exhausting and emotional moving can be. Amid all the boxes and decisions, I found unexpected peace through a creative project of building custom crates to protect my framed pictures. What started as a money-saving task turned into a grounding experience that reminded me how much joy and calm I find in working with my hands and being present in the moment. In this Wise Walk, we explore how creativity can serve as a powerful grounding tool when life feels overwhelming. Whether it's building, painting, playing music, or teaching yoga, I share how creative outlets help me stay connected to myself and centered in my environment. [04:18] I really got into the project, and realized I really enjoyed working with wood. This gave me peace of mind and will make moving the pictures really easy. [05:20] My supportive sister agreed to help me. She also got a rush of satisfaction from completing the project. [06:33] The project and the construction made me calm and helped me be present. You can't work with power tools and not be present. [07:13] Creativity and creative outlets is one of my grounding tools. [09:03] There are many psychologists and scientists that talk about the power of using creativity as a grounding tool. It promotes relaxation, triggers endorphins, and helps us be present. [10:53] Rock climbing is another activity that helps me shut off parts of my brain. I need to be present for the next hold that I can grab safely. [11:30] Make a list of the things that are in your toolkit that will help you express yourself creatively. [12:01] Grounding is a way to center yourself on the most basic function. It's being present with what you're doing. [13:28] Creativity and mindful movement allows us to use specific parts of our brain. [14:03] Another way I'm grounding is by teaching yoga. When I'm teaching yoga, it feels like I'm fully present and grounded. [15:37] I just wanted to share how impactful these creative tools have been for me during this crunch time.
