The Valentines Episode : Sweets, House Plants, and Hikes Are for Lovers

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2023 35:11

In today's episode, we are serving up ideas to make your Valentine's Day cozy and connected - - inspired from the pages of our favorite home magazines.  We have taken the recipe for the Red Velvet Brownie Torte (hello!) from the February 2023 issue of Real Simple Magazine into our home test kitchens, and we are excited to share that recipe, as well as our thoughts and what we learned along the way about how to pull it off without a hitch. And that's a good thing because with Valentine's Day just around the corner, there's no room for error. And while flowers are lovely on Valentine's Day, our magazines know us so well to know that a house plant is a much appreciated and adored exchange for the traditional bouquet. Both All Recipes and Sunset magazines in their February 2023 issues had articles on house plants, so we will dig into their appeal, their healing powers, and of course, how to keep them alive as we speak to plant shop owner, Jude Stevens of Green Space Design by Jude in Salem, Oregon. And we fill in the gap with a topic that we felt was lacking in allllll of our magazines. Something that I personally was searching for and needing but could not find- and that is creative ways to celebrate Valentine's Day with the family - alongside the usual chocolate indulgence and expressions of love. So, I'll share an idea I have for everyone - and that is a Valentine's Day Heart Hunt Hike. It's a tradition we have done in our family since Milo was able to walk, and we look forward to it every year. So, if you're needing an activity to do with the family on love day, this could be it. Welcome to our Valentine's Day celebration. Everyone put out your handmade kleenex box. It's time to deliver tiny Valentines to each other. This is the Page Living Podcast. You are so loved. Today's episode is all about gifting - from wrapping to wish lists and the advice in between. We will take a look at how to craft the perfect snow-white clay gift tags. Spoiler alert: They make great ornaments, too. These tags were inspired by Annie Diamond's Better Homes and Gardens article that we went on and on about last week. We will practice using natural elements, like twigs and sprigs, for adorning wrapped packages - inspired by Magnolia. Greenery and dried oranges will make another appearance as we craft gift tags, inspired by Real Simple. Real Simple magazine throws down some gift-buying advice. And as someone who promises every December 26th that I will be better, do better, be more organized, be more on top of it NEXT Christmas, I am totally open to taking in all the tips they want to dish out. And we will dig our way out of the pile of wish lists each magazine has generously curated for us, as we curate our very own wish lists from those lists. The time to give is now. The time to start wrapping in creative ways is now. The time to delight the ones you love is now. And we are right here with you. This is the Page Living Podcast. And YOU are welcome here.

In today's episode, we are focusing on one thing and one thing only: PIES! More specifically, how to make the ultimate pie crust. Because,  if you're anything like me, pie making seems to have a  magical quality, like it's a special talent doled out to a select few in the family who have mastered the art of pie making.I, admittedly, would LOVE to be one of those people. In the spirit of fully exploring our pie crust recipe options, I could not take one magazine's promise of perfection alone.  Referencing the pages of Food and Wine, Sunset Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Cooks Illustrated, Bon Appetit, Taste of Home, Epicurious, and the Pioneer Woman, today's episode is the ultimate education in making perfect, flaky pie crust. So today, friends, we become pie bakers together by exploring time-tested pie crusts curated from the pages of our beloved magazines. In the end, the goal is to land on the pie dough for the pie that we will proudly and triumphantly lay on the Thanksgiving buffet -just right of the green bean casserole and just below the cranberry relish. Friends and family may swoon. And we may even have an entry for the State Fair. Goals! Joining me today is the one, the only, the pie champion of all time for our family … my mom! This is the Page Living Podcast. We are grateful for YOU. And YOU are welcome here.

The sides, in our world, are really the stars of the show. And because every one of our magazines has delivered roughly 100 recipes per issue for sides, we are going to switch up our approach and share an overview, if you will, as we all work to craft our own menus for the family feast. We will talk  Pro Tips thanks to Real Simple Magazine. Our magazines are so kind to share answers to the most commonly asked questions. I can just see year after year content editors being like, “ Y'all! They still don't know when to thaw that turkey. Welcome to episode TWO of the Page Living Podcast! Today we are taking a closer look into the June 2021 issues of Better Homes and Gardens and Country Living magazines. We LOVE a good power muffin in our house. So we wondered… do the Chocolate Cherry Power Up Muffins on page 78 of the June issue of Better Homes and Garden live up to the name? We find out in this week's Test Kitchen. To bake this week's recipe, I have called on one of my favorite trusty at-home bakers. She's my little sister, a mom to a four year old and a newly turned two year old. She's Katie Jane Crocker. We share our adapted recipe - worthy of being a grab-n go-breakfast or an afternoon snack for the kids that you'll feel totally fine saying, “Absolutely!' when they ask for seconds. If … they ask for seconds. Let's learn how to flea market! For the lesson, we turn to page 47 of the June issue of Better Homes and Gardens for an article called Hunters and Gatherers, where we meet interior designer Natalie Papier and her best friend and fellow flea market buddy, Kim Daunis. Get the deets on everything we need to know to walk away with new treasures - at the right price. And while negotiating prices may make this sensitive people pleaser sweat, the advice is sure to be the supportive boost needed. Last week, we shared a summer cocktail fit for the over 21 crowd. However, when we are poolside or lakeside with our cocktails, you know the littles will want in on the special drink situation. And rightly so! Our answer is inspired by the Grapefruit Guava Fruit Punch on page 105 of the Better Homes and Gardens June issue. Listen to eight year old Milo share his thoughts on our adapted recipe, which we are calling the POG Sunset Mocktail. With Father's Day top of mind, the June 2021 Country living magazine has devoted a uniquely enormous amount of  real estate - a mighty 18 pages, which is kind of unheard of, as an ode to the sage advice and corny one-liners our dads tend to say that stick with us. Pulling quotes from famous dads, we are allowed to get lost in the feeling of those sweet moments with our fathers - or any figure who has a lasting impact on us because of the words they speak - and the value we put in their role in our lives. And I asked my own dad for some advice - a treasured commodity. Visit our blog for more ways we bring the pages to life.
