Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 21, 2025 is: bodacious boh-DAY-shuss adjective Bodacious is used as an informal synonym of remarkable and noteworthy, as well as sexy and voluptuous. In some dialects of the Southern and Midland US, bodacious is used by its oldest meaning: "outright, unmistakable." // The bodacious decor of the boutique hotel is intended to appeal to the young and the hip. See the entry > Examples: "There's no need to lug in a 6-foot specimen tree to add bodacious botanicals into your home, because even the smallest planters can make a big impact when intentionally pairing striking foliage with a unique vessel." — Kristin Guy, Sunset Magazine, 5 Mar. 2024 Did you know? Some of our readers may know bodacious as a word that figured prominently in the lingo of the 1989 film Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Others may recall the term's frequent use in the long-running "Snuffy Smith" comic strip. Neither the creators of the comic strip nor the movie can claim to have coined bodacious, which began appearing in print in the mid-1800s, but both surely contributed to its popularity. The exact origin of the word is uncertain, but it is most likely a blend of bold and audacious, and it may be linked to boldacious, a now-rare British dialect term meaning "brazen" or "impudent."

At a fundamental level, passive house practitioners are engaged in a rebellion against poor quality design and construction. It's becoming quite clear that this rebellion has legs and will endure. Given this, a question worth unpacking is whether the durability of the passive house movement is emerging as an architectural style. What are the defining principles behind architectural aesthetic decisions in the context of high performance homes and buildings? What will the history books say about our little rebellion in the years to come? Join us in this rich and thoughtful discussion with two powerful voices at the top of their game in the passive house realm.Tessa BradleyTessa is an optimist. Many women entering perimenopause often experience the onset of new food and/or seasonal allergies or intolerances. Maybe you're noticing new and strange symptoms after drinking alcohol, eating specific foods, or smelling fragrances. Maybe you're noticing adverse reactions to environmental compounds, such as hay fever, skin issues, like eczema, or even asthma. Did you know that estrogen stimulates the release of histamine and your body may struggle to excrete it? Higher histamine also leads to more estrogen being released in your body and you can see what a vicious cycle this can be.In my health coaching business, I work with many midlife women who know they have histamine intolerance and take a myriad of over-the-counter medications to suppress the adverse symptoms. I also work with women who have no idea and discover it along their health journey in working together. Personally, I never had allergies, and all of a sudden in menopause seasonal allergies appeared. It's all too common and very much overlooked.Dr. Meg Mill, PharmD, is also a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner with over two decades of clinical experience. Marc Hostovsky is the founder of Minoan. Prior to leaving to start Minoan, Marc was an early employee at Jet.com (later acquired by WMT in 2016 for $3.3B) where he managed a $400M omnichannel P&L and spent a lot of time between the walls of traditional retail (WMT) and eCommerce (Jet.com). After spending over a decade in retail, Marc saw an opportunity to shift the economic relationship between suppliers and consumers, specifically short-term rental hosts. By turning these properties into showrooms for brands, the concept of “Native Retail” was born. Native Retail is the idea of illuminating everyday spaces like short term rentals, gyms, restaurants, etc., and turning them into showrooms for the products and brands that are in those spaces. That way, consumers can test out products in environments which the products were designed for, and if they like them, they can easily learn more and even purchase them at that moment. As featured in TechCrunch, Forbes, and Sunset Magazine, Minoan is an all-in-one, free, ordering platform hosts can use to systematize furnishing. Hosts can buy from 200+ brands at steep discounts and save the hassle of dealing with messy logistics (tracking, customer service, etc.). One thing that sets Minoan apart from other purchasing organizations is we can also help turn your STR into a shoppable experience so guests can order the items they loved from their stay, and you can make a little extra money. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers experience the most humbling of human experiences: being embarrassed. Part 1: Emma Yarbrough feels in control of her future after undergoing an egg retrieval operation until a burning sensation sends her for a loop. Part 2: When the doctor finds blood in Carlos Kotkin's urine, he ends up having to undergo some deeply humiliating procedures. Emma Yarbrough is a storyteller, actor, playwright, arts administrator and silly billy from beautiful (and tiny) Eufaula, Alabama. Fans of Story Collider in Atlanta may recognize her as one of our producers and hosts. During the day, she's the assistant director of Emory Arts at Emory University. At night, she's a handmaiden to her cats Christopher Robin and Christopher Lloyd. Carlos Kotkin is an author, screenwriter and humorist. His dating memoir "Please God Let It Be Herpes: A Heartfelt Quest For Love And Companionship" was published in 2012 and he has also written a number of animated features, including Rio 2, Open Season: Scared Silly, The Star and the soon-to-be released Giants of La Mancha. His stories have been featured in The New York Times' Modern Love, Reader's Digest and Sunset Magazine, even though the Sunset Magazine was whittled down from five pages to one paragraph. (They still paid him.) His stories have also been aired on The Moth, Risk and KRCW's Unfictional podcasts. He was valedictorian of his high school, then promptly dropped out of the University of Southern California, so he never thought he'd be in a show about science, but here we are. He's not a fan of writing about himself in the third person. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
In this episode, Jeremy interviews Marc Hostovsky, founder of Minoan, who formerly worked at Jet.com (acquired by WMT in 2016 for $3.3B) where he managed a $400M omnichannel P&L and gained experience in both traditional retail (WMT) and eCommerce (Jet.com). With over a decade of retail experience, Marc recognized an opportunity to transform the relationship between suppliers and consumers, particularly short-term rental hosts. This led to the creation of "Native Retail," which turns spaces like short-term rentals, gyms, and restaurants into product showrooms. Minoan, featured in TechCrunch, Forbes, and Sunset Magazine, offers hosts a free, all-in-one ordering platform for efficient furnishing. Hosts can access discounts from 200+ brands and avoid logistical hassles. What sets Minoan apart is its ability to help hosts make their short-term rentals shoppable, allowing guests to purchase items from their stay and hosts to earn extra income. In today's episode, we are focusing on one thing and one thing only: PIES! More specifically, how to make the ultimate pie crust. Because, if you're anything like me, pie making seems to have a magical quality, like it's a special talent doled out to a select few in the family who have mastered the art of pie making.I, admittedly, would LOVE to be one of those people. In the spirit of fully exploring our pie crust recipe options, I could not take one magazine's promise of perfection alone. Referencing the pages of Food and Wine, Sunset Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Cooks Illustrated, Bon Appetit, Taste of Home, Epicurious, and the Pioneer Woman, today's episode is the ultimate education in making perfect, flaky pie crust. So today, friends, we become pie bakers together by exploring time-tested pie crusts curated from the pages of our beloved magazines. In the end, the goal is to land on the pie dough for the pie that we will proudly and triumphantly lay on the Thanksgiving buffet -just right of the green bean casserole and just below the cranberry relish. Friends and family may swoon. And we may even have an entry for the State Fair. Goals! Joining me today is the one, the only, the pie champion of all time for our family … my mom! This is the Page Living Podcast. We are grateful for YOU. And YOU are welcome here.
Greg Klassen's woodworking journey began as a newlywed making furniture out of door scraps. Later he would design the original River® table - live edge wood with blue glass. Greg's distinctive style, his grit in going to show after show after show with little results, and his willingness to learn marketing and write an infinity of press releases and cold emails led to a turning point in 2014. After being published on a major contemporary art blog, Greg and his River® tables went viral. Since then, this one-man show has sold work to every corner of the globe, been featured by the Smithsonian, Sunset Magazine and the New York Times. In this episode, he and Leo talk about setting a foundation for solid marketing, the importance of passion and grit, and how he personally delivered a 12.5' sculpture to Idaho. Diane Power Zimmerman's great grandfather bought the property that would become the Nut Tree. Her grandparents founded and ran the roadside oasis that opened in Vacaville in 1921. Turning to a lighter note this week, we look at what was once the iconic stop on car journeys from San Francisco to Sacramento and Tahoe. The Nut Tree, in its heyday, reflected the intersection of midcentury design and Sunset Magazine's western ethos. The forerunner of the roadside fruit stand, it attracted renowned guests while it spawned innovations in design, dining, and hospitality.

Nan Cole is a foraging expert based in San Luis Obispo, California, and the resident forager for Ventana Big Sur. She leads foraging walks, both urban and rural, she educates people about the do's and don'ts of wildcrafting, and she cooks and bakes with her finds. In fact, one of the things that attracted me to Nan's work was a photo on her Instagram page, @foragerslo, featuring a beautiful macaron made from redwood needle sugar and lemon zest. We walked up to a cozy spot on the side of Cerro San Luis to chat, and she pointed out native plants along the way, sharing how coyote brush is an antidote for poison oak and how mustard plant tastes like broccoli. Then, a couple weeks after our talk, I opened Sunset Magazine to find a full-page spread about Nan and her foraging program at Ventana Big Sur. A rock star! If you don't feel inspired to join one of her foraging walks after listening to our conversation, you might want to check your pulse, because this woman is inspiring. Sarah kicks off the episode with her thoughts on what sustainability means for her business & garden practices (2:30), and will be covering sustainability on the floristry side next week. Listen to the flower fact trivia question (23:00), with the answer after the interview. Today's guest is Dorsey Kilbourn from Blossom in Portland, Oregon, who stops by to talk about landscape design for homes (23:25). This episode will make you want to turn your unloved backyard into the outdoor space of your dreams! Think peaceful morning coffee space, outdoor dinners, swing 'portals', patio covers, children's play features, and creating different 'rooms'. She fills us in on some of her go-to design features, how to maximize space in urban landscapes, how she brainstorms and narrows down her designs, garden layers, what to expect if you work with a landscape design company, and how she got into this field. Dorsey walks us through some of her favorite plants, recommendations for how to create garden borders, and answers some rapid-fire listener questions such as: drought tolerant plants, plants that are good for shade, and irrigation tips for resilient plants. For design inspiration, Dorsey uses Pinterest and loves following Piet Oudolf, Charlotte Rowe Gardens, MCLD LLC, Sunset Magazine, Artisan Landscapes, and Lara Behr. For plant inspiration, Dorsey highly recommends looking through the Xera Plants website, especially if you're in the Pacific Northwest. At the end of the ep, Sarah answers the trivia question (1:19:02) & the song of the week is Long Black Veil by Johnny Cash (1:20:05). Growing plants and being involved in horticulture since 1980 meant knowing the USDA's plant hardiness zones so I could jabber to folks knowingly (Ha!) about plant choices for their personal habitat. To make things a little more confusing Sunset Magazine created their own hardiness and planting zones for the western US. Jeez, Sunset! During my brief tenure at the University of Arizona I learned C. Hart Merriam's life zone system created in 1896 and I referred to and preferred that system for many years (see photo below) and it did make me sound pretty smart. Then in 1994 along comes David Brown's Biotic Communities, Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico (it came with a big map!). Some nights that book still comes to bed with me. So I'm guessing you've figured out that I'm more interested in biotic communities than planting zones. If you plant plants native to your biotic community…well, problem solved. Planting made simple by Petey Mesquitey! For more information and discussion on life zones and biotic communities we'll see you in the Borderlands Biome Bar. Oh, and that was our new pooch Burley adding his 2 cents at the end of this episode.
