Simon and Nick are back, a week late because Simon forgot what date it was! Nick's trusty microphone then decided to die completely, so he sounds a little different as he had to fall back on his headset, and the master recording crashed and deleted itself before Simon could save it, so this is the Piezo backup recording, which is perfectly OK but doesn't have all the Audio Hijack niceness. Anyway in a month that saw new Apple Macs, and iPads, and Tariff Tomfoolery and much more the boys decide to talk about Simon ordering a 16e, and plastic eating mealworms, amongst other things!!! Everything New | New | Part 5 This morning, Senior Pastor David Dwight concluded our first sermon series, New, with a powerful and hope-filled message. In the beginning, God created the Garden of Eden — a place of perfect peace, unity, security, love, and wholeness. But when sin entered the picture, so did doubt, shame, fear, confusion, brokenness, and death. Over the centuries, humanity drifted further from God's original design. Yet, in a world marred by disease, hardened hearts, and suffering, Jesus came to redeem and restore it. Through His birth, death, and resurrection, Jesus set the stage for God's ultimate plan of redemption. And we can hold fast to this promise: God is making all things new. One day, He will restore creation completely — sin abolished, death defeated, every tear wiped away. In its place will be a love so whole, so complete, that it surpasses anything we could ever imagine. You can watch all messages from this series online at @HopeChurchRVA on YouTube, and you can dive deeper individually or in your small groups with discussion guides available on our website.

Despite the excitement surrounding the Vision Pro, the conversation quickly turns to the need for Touch ID integration, speculating on how it might enhance user experience when using the headset. We then shift our focus to Apple's strategic moves within the AR and VR landscape. The team examines analyst Mark Gurman's insights on the future of Vision Pro, considering the potential for a more affordable headset to cater to a broader audience and how it may impact the existing technology. Chuck and Marty share their thoughts on the contrasting narratives within the industry regarding the evolution of AR, with some advocating for a shift back to Touch ID while others are optimistic about Face ID advancements. The episode further delves into iOS 18 and its growing AI capabilities, particularly in relation to Siri and the Vision Pro. Our hosts express caution and skepticism over how these features could meaningfully connect with Vision Pro functionality, highlighting the general anticipation around upcoming updates but recognizing the gaps in integration that remain. As we transition to discussing Apple's ecosystem, we touch upon the remarkable success of the MacBook Air and the long-standing favor it holds among users, followed by a celebration of the MacBook Pro's anniversary and its evolution over the years. The conversation around iCloud storage tiers reveals concerns regarding Apple's pricing strategy and the lack of competitive offerings compared to other services, prompting a lively debate on how Apple can adapt in this area to retain user loyalty. Shifting gears, we address the recent push for RCS messaging support on iPhones and the mixed experiences users have had when communicating with Android devices, particularly in relation to security. A cautionary tale emerges around phishing scams targeting iPhone users, reinforcing the importance of vigilance in an increasingly complex digital landscape. Finally, we touch on the enhancements made to the Apple One subscription service, specifically the anticipated AI health coaching feature that is poised to elevate user engagement and fitness tracking. Our hosts enthusiastically discuss the future of Apple TV+, reviewing its market position and the steps Apple needs to take to improve visibility and user retention as they roll out new content. We explore the lack of significant updates in this beta, with some initial snooping revealing nothing groundbreaking. However, we note an intriguing patent publication from Apple regarding design enhancements and features for the Vision Pro, including patents for patented light seals and cushions. As we speculate about the future of Vision OS, there's much excitement around the potential for an affordable next-generation headset expected by 2026. We then shift gears to the beta releases of iOS and iPadOS 18.3, just shortly after the rollout of 18.2. The discussion touches on the latest features and improvements, including the incorporation of Chat GPT integration into Siri, which offers fascinating potential even as we consider user sentiment toward AI functionality. Our conversation reveals a varied reception to features like Genmoji, showcasing generational differences in engagement with AI technology. Additionally, we reflect on recent advancements in the Apple ecosystem, including the increasingly integrated capabilities of AirTags, especially concerning airlines adopting tracking features for lost baggage. A noteworthy accessory for AirTags, the Time Capsule, promises ten years of battery life, highlighting user concerns about battery longevity. The discussion kicks off with the buzz surrounding the newly released Vision Pro's Virtual Display features, including the recently added wide and ultra-wide options that have excited beta users. I share my first hands-on experiences with the new functionality, describing how it effectively allows the Vision Pro to function as an external display for Macs, simulating the feel of multiple 4K displays right in your workspace. The enthusiastic reactions from the team, especially those who have been actively testing the features, highlight the potential impact this will have on productivity. As we transition to upcoming accessories, we explore Belkin's newly launched travel case for the Vision Pro. At a more accessible price point than Apple's offerings, the Belkin case has generated positive feedback for its quality and design. Marty shares personal insights on headset cases and which options he prefers for travel, suggesting practical solutions tailored to frequent travelers. The conversation shifts gears as we touch on the recent changes in Apple's retail strategy for the Vision Pro demo areas. In light of some reports suggesting a slowdown in sales, Apple appears to be consolidating display setups in local stores. We analyze the implications of such a shift, especially in busy urban markets versus smaller retail locations, and the overall customer engagement in-store. Shifting our focus back to software, we discuss the features introduced with the iOS 18.2 beta, such as enhanced support for image manipulation with Genmoji and the integrations with ChatGPT. The initial impressions emerge—while amusing, these features still feel like they are in infancy, and genuine utility might take a while to be realized. We recount hilarious attempts at generating images and the peculiar outputs they yielded, underscoring the quirks of AI-driven technology.   The discussion spins back to hardware with news of the M4 Mac Minis hitting stores, and I share my excitement over my reservation for the M4 Pro variant. Together with insights from various team members who plan to upgrade their machines, we reflect on the remarkable performance benchmarks and versatility of these new devices. Marty enthusiastically details the specs of his new setup while also expressing the anticipation for the next level—potentially the M4 Ultra. In light of Apple's recent shifts in trading values and end-of-life decisions surrounding older models, we also talk about ongoing debates regarding Apple Watch features and the return of key functionalities in newer models. As we explore the collaborative tension between Apple and companies like Masimo, we emphasize the urgent need for resolution so that consumers could benefit from fully functional devices. A lively dialogue ensues about GM's controversial decision to phase out CarPlay in favor of its in-house software system. The panel fiercely debates the consumer implications of this move and stresses the importance of software integration in modern vehicles, highlighting that the prevailing consumer preference lies firmly with established ecosystems like Apple's. As we wrap up, I offer my thoughts on the evolving nature of streaming services and the industry's crackdown on password sharing, allowing insights into how that could shape user behaviors moving forward. The discussion ends with heartfelt nostalgia as we remember Elwood Edwards, the voice of AOL's iconic "You've Got Mail," highlighting the lasting impact of technology on our lives even as it evolves. I'm joined by guest Jill McKinley and Marty Jencius, along with Jeff Gamet. Together, we explore the new features, enhancements, and our experiences with Apple's latest offerings. We kick off our discussion by examining the newly seeded developer betas, which bring exciting updates for iPhone and iPad users. The introduction of Apple intelligence garners significant attention, and we all share our first impressions. Jill shares her experience with running the beta on her iPad, discussing features like photo customization and AI email summarization. Marty and I chime in, expressing our enthusiasm for the potential of Apple intelligence, albeit with the recognition that there's still room for improvement. The conversation then shifts to the upcoming Apple event, anticipated to showcase new products as well as the official release of iOS 18. We speculate on the timing of the event and the chances of seeing new MacBook Pros with M4 processors. We also touch on the beta features for macOS Sequoia, watchOS, and tvOS, reflecting on what they could mean for users interested in multi-device setups. Next, we move into a topic that caught our interest: the ever-evolving world of VPNs on mobile devices. I share insights into the growing importance of VPN usage, especially when on public Wi-Fi networks. We break down some popular VPN options, discussing their differences and what makes them favorable for privacy-conscious users. Jill and Jeff contribute their thoughts on past experiences, while also emphasizing the need for reliability and security when browsing. Shifting topics, we explore the surprising popularity of the Apple Watch Ultra among consumers and the intriguing statistics shared about its sales performance compared to the Apple Watch SE. As an avid Apple Watch user, I voice my own experiences and temptations to upgrade, while Jill and Jeff discuss their preferences and needs when it comes to wearable technology. We all agree that understanding user experiences will be critical as new models are introduced. As we continue, we discuss Apple's much-anticipated tabletop robotic home device rumored for a future release in 2026, which could revolutionize home automation. The idea of a device that combines functionalities of an iPad, video conferencing, and home management is captivating, though we collectively express skepticism about its necessity given current technology. Finally, we cover Apple's recent move to open up Apple Maps for Firefox users, highlighting the importance of accessibility across various platforms. As we reflect on Apple's decisions surrounding these features, we conclude that their goal is to democratize access while maintaining quality. Throughout the episode, we engage with listener comments and share additional insights, all while bringing in anecdotes and experiences that enrich our discussions. Whether discussing new technology, personal preferences, or industry trends, this episode is packed with valuable information and lively conversation. Don't miss our wrap-up, where we encourage everyone to join us live next week for more engaging discussions about Apple and its ecosystem. The news waits for no one, including the Dukes! Insomniac was hacked, Bobby Kotick left Activision, and a new rumor surrounding Xbox's next console generation all managed to slip out in the two weeks we were gone. Naturally, we tackle all of this, but the Dukes really wanted to lean into the proposed 2026 gameplan for Xbox. Striking ahead of PlayStation, this would leave them in a similar position to the Xbox 360 vs PS3. Does Xbox need to hit the reset button so soon after finally getting their legs going in 2023? Would an Xbox fanbase buy into such a product so soon after the Series X launch cycle? Is Xbox's messaging airtight enough to avoid a Wii U scenario? There are many ways this can go and Xbox in 2024 is surrounded with a lot of firepower between their own first party, Activision, and Bethesda where they could make some noise as soon as they'd like. We also get into the 2024 roadmap for Starfield, the rumors of Banjo returning, some updates on Blade, and plenty more! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
