Brooke Romney is the queen of modern manners for teens. If you missed it, our last episode was an interview I did with Brooke about friendship problems in the teen years. I hope her words in that interview resonated with you like they did with me. This episode is a little bonus addition where I asked Brooke to share three mini conversations we can have with our teens to help them get better at friendships. (Because, let's face it, most teens need some help learning how to be a good friend! Does anyone else feel like they have a toddler again?
Teenage friendship problems weigh heavily on us moms.

We accepted submissions from listeners for this topic and have compiled them all here! When a pastor or ministry leader falls, it impacts the entire family and community. Walking through a tragedy like this is difficult for everyone. Today's show is from The Glass House, when Illuminator, Lisa Whittle, shared how she has walked this road firsthand as a daughter of a pastor who had a very public fall from their church ministry position. Lisa Whittle shares with us how her father's actions and the reaction from the church community deeply impacted her faith and relationship with the local church. Lisa is the best-selling author of 9 books and several Bible studies, including Jesus Over Everything and The Hard Good. She is a sought-out Bible teacher for her wit and bold, bottom-line approach. She is the founder of online communities: Ministry Strong for ministry leaders and Called Creatives for writers and speakers, and host of the popular Jesus Over Everything podcast. She's a wife, mom, lover of laughter, good food, and The Bible. As we broke down a few points from Lisa's article, How to Lose a Pastor in 10 Years, our prayer is that through this conversation we grow in compassion and grace. Our prayer is that we think twice next time we forward an article or respond to a text. May we be people that surround and support those in need of grace because of the overwhelming amount of grace our Father has given to us.SHOW LINKS:Connect with Angie How to Lose a Pastor in 10 Years 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens Connect with the Glass House on Instagram HERE

Brooke Romney, author of 52 Modern Manners for Teens, shares practical modern manners and advice for teens and their parents to help navigate the social, emotional, and practical challenges of being a teenager in todays world.
We want to raise emotionally intelligent, connected and kind children who will become awesome adults. We want them to build good relationships, ask good questions and understand the purpose behind everything they do. Instead of resigning ourselves to kids just being kids, we can intentionally and proactively teach them what matters and stop reinforcing the wrong ideas. How do we help our kids communicate, develop and grow? How do we teach them lessons that allow them to thrive well into adulthood? In this episode, I'm joined by writer, speaker, online community leader, and author of “52 Modern Manners for Kids”, Brooke Romney. She shares why she's passionate about helping children build better relationships, learn good manners and feel more connected. Self-confidence doesn't come from a parent saying you're awesome 200 times a day. It comes from tackling hard tasks and feeling capable, and that's really important. -Brooke Romney 3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode -Reinforcing the right ideas How do we teach our kids to see the purpose behind activities when they aren't based on having fun? -Forget “kids will be kids” How do we raise our children to become awesome, aware and kind adults? -Persistence and irrational value There's no such thing as an overnight success. Do you struggle with manners in your family? Do you wonder if they are outdated and even worth teaching? In this week's episode, Brooke Romney shares her simple system to effectively make manners part of our everyday lives with kids. Brooke Romney is a writer, speaker and leader of an online community who helps moms of teens and tweens to create meaningful, healthy, and enjoyable relationships with their children through practical application, education, and community. Her goal is for every family to feel confident and connected. The mother of four boys ages tween to adult, Brooke knows parenting perfection isn't real and takes an honest and hopeful approach with her audience. Her best-selling book 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens (Volumes 1 and 2) provides weekly tips to help parents and teens navigate the complexities of today's world. The follow-up 52 Modern Manners for Kids features tips for kids and tweens aged four through 12. Brooke and her family live in Utah. You can find her on Instagram HERE. You'll love Brooke's emphasis on manners that will allow our kids to be aware, kind, and connected. She also shares a glimpse into her own motherhood journey and how she went from being stuck in perfectionism and overwhelm to truly enjoying motherhood and being present and engaged in her own family. In our conversation, Brooke outlines five ways to teach manners to kids: Focus on one manner a week. You can talk about it directly or leave it out for kids to read so they have some autonomy in learning. Bonus tip - add your manner time to something you are already doing well, like Friday movie night or a weekly family night. Teach the why. Kids are smart and understand. Role Play! It is a way to practice at home and a fun way to prepare. When you are reading books or watching movies together, talk about when the characters are using the manners you've learned about or when they don't. What are the consequences? What's the impact on those around them? As a parent, look for when you are seeing the manners you've been talking about and reinforce them with a thank you or share around the dinner table when everyone used their manners. Expect that kids won't get it right away. That's okay! Think of it as planting seeds that will start to grow when they are ready. This is a proactive approach in parenting to give our children the best chance of success in navigating relationships. When our children know what to do or how to act appropriately, it empowers them and builds their confidence over time. A great resource to make this simple is Brooke Romney's 52 Modern Manners for Kids book (and her two books for teens). She designed it to stand upright to easily sit on a counter so everyone can read it easily throughout the week. The manner and the why are on the front page, and role plays are included on the back. Talk about setting up the environment to make it easy to do the thing you want to do! When a pastor or ministry leader falls, it impacts the entire family and community. Walking through a tragedy like this is difficult for everyone. Today's guest has walked this road firsthand as a daughter of a pastor who had a very public fall from their church ministry position. May we be people that surround and support those in need of grace because of the overwhelming amount of grace our Father has given to us. This week, Tara had the pleasure of welcoming Brooke Romney, author of the best-selling books 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens (Volumes 1 & 2) and 52 Modern Manners for Kids. Their conversation revolved around the importance of teaching manners and social skills to children and how these contribute to a successful and connected life.Brooke, a mother of four boys, shared her insights on how teaching manners is not just about appearances, but about helping kids feel successful on the inside. Brooke shared her favorite manners from her books, including the importance of introducing oneself and finding new friends if current friendships are consistently negative. In today's digital age, kids often miss out on observing the world around them. Brooke emphasized the importance of parents stepping in to teach their children manners and social skills. Tara and Brooke discussed the importance of building awareness as a foundational skill for teaching manners. This includes being aware of their surroundings, "reading the room," and knowing when it's appropriate to talk about certain topics.Tara and Brooke emphasized the need for parents to actively teach these skills, as they are not always absorbed naturally. Some adults who were not taught these skills struggle with loneliness and feeling awkward in social settings. Brooke's books provide a starting point for conversations about manners and social skills, and they include roleplay and discussion scenarios to engage younger children.Brooke's book, 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens, is a fantastic resource that helps parents prepare their teenagers to be successful in social situations. We can teach it until we are blue in the face, and sometimes our kids have them and sometimes they don't. But one day with enough practice they will start to get it! I talk about 3 that we started early in this podcast, and why they matter! Many parents wonder why their kids lack manners, but with consistent effort, we can positively shape their behavior. It starts with leading by example - demonstrating good manners ourselves, using "please," "thank you," and "excuse me" regularly. Positive reinforcement and gentle corrections are crucial in shaping their behavior. Explaining the reasons behind manners helps them understand the importance of being respectful and considerate. We can practice empathy and role-play scenarios to teach appropriate responses in different situations. Remember, teaching manners is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistency. By guiding our kids, we can help them grow up to be polite and respectful individuals. Check out the book I talked about today: 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teen

Key Takeaways Take Baby Steps: Handing your child a smartphone right off the bat (and at a young age) can cause a lot of issues. Start by sharing your phone. Talk about what apps they can and can't use. Look at your screen time reports and adjust. Start with a media that you can watch together like YouTube to teach them about parameters and how to manage inappropriate online behavior. Model Social Media and Phone Use For Your Children: Show your kids what you're doing on your phone, whether it's sending emails for work, arranging carpool or ordering groceries; parents can show the value of technology as well as the consequences. Talk safety and media literacy: Help your children understand how algorithms work. Teach them to be mindful of what they are encouraging in their feed and how that will affect their mental well-being. Help them understand how to spot misinformation and harmful rhetoric. Although your teen may be tech savvy, they do not have the emotional maturity of an adult. It's ok if they get in over their head with social media to have them take a break from it. It is not you verses your teen when it comes to their phone. You are working together to find solutions and help them use their phone as a tool to live their best life. As parents, it's important to create a working relationship to continue to talk with your teen about social media, what they're experiencing, and how you can help. Let your teen know that if they are feeling unsafe or out-of-control with social media, they can come to you for help without judgement or consequences. For this week's episode, we spoke with Brooke Romney, a guest that had been recommended to us over and over — and we were so happy we were able to connect with her.Brooke is a writer who began her career on Capitol Hill and whose work has appeared in many publications, including in the Washington Post. She now spends much of her time writing and speaking, particularly on the subject of parenting, but also on social media, connection, and faith. In 2021, she published 52 Modern Manners for Today's Teens, which reached #1 on Amazon's bestselling Parenting books list, and climbed as high as #29 in its entire catalog of 38 million books. She's also published I Like Me Anyway: Embracing Imperfection, Connection & Christ. In our conversation with Brooke, we did talk a lot about parenting, but so many of the principles were broadly applicable. Specifically, we spent time on creating connection with all the people around us, including our children — we talked about some of the habits that are so easy to slip into that can be disconnecting and simple things we may not have thought of that can create moments of connection. We also talked about “living from our values,” and being willing to be misunderstood and receive feedback when we're doing so — as Brooke says, listening to other perspectives, even if it's difficult, is how we get better. We were so grateful Brooke took the time to come on the podcast, and we really think you're going to enjoy hearing from her. What do modern manners look like? Manners are simply social behaviors or habits - you can have good ones or you can have bad ones. But it's been 101 years since Emily Post first published her book on manners and etiquette and it only seems as though lately we, as a society, have regressed in our social behaviors. My guest this week, Lee Cordon, has long felt called to make an impact on this generation and the next, to help people be gracious in all they do, say, and give. Sure, manners include which fork to use when, but it is much more than that. It's a way to show love and respect to our neighbors and ourselves. In our digital age where boundaries can be blurry, Lee offers us encouragement in training our children (at any age) to respond with grace and dignity. DoSayGive tackles the topics that most traditional manners classes don't, like social media and texting etiquette, how to be a good friend, and how to communicate with ease and consideration. Vanessa tells Brooke about HeyFam, the new FREE app created by the Chatbooks team to make family communication easier. You can find HeyFam on the For You tab in the Chatbooks app. Follow @brookeromneywrites Follow @vanessaquigley Download the Chatbooks app and use promo code: POD20 at checkout Free photo organization course
