Anders needs help finding evidence of a plot to make all mages in Kirkwall tranquil. The squad creeps through the underground passage that leads into the Gallows, fighting spiders and Lyrium smugglers along the way. At the end of the passage, our target Sir Alrik is terrorizing a mage girl who only wanted to see her mom. Justice (or perhaps he is now Vengeance) takes control of Anders, feeding off their shared anger. Sir Alrik and his soldiers are killed but that leaves a very frightened young woman who has never seen anything like Vengeance before. She, justifiably, calls him a demon and cowers. Vengeance doesn't like this. Once all is said and done, Anders has fled the passage and we must go back to his clinic to check on him and perhaps show him how far the tranquil solution has gotten. We find Sebastian in the Chantry talking to Grand Cleric Elthina. Despite killing Flit Company mercenaries, there is more to be done for the prince of Starkhaven. He has discovered that his family's allies, the Harimanns are responsible for the murder of his family. He doesn't want to provoke a war, but it isn't the best idea for the sole heir to walk into enemy territory alone. Thankfully Hawke is the kind of person who gets voluntold into things and will help Sebastian whether they like it or not. Upon entering the estate, Sebastian comments that something isn't right–which is proven as we encounter each member of the household. Drunk, mad, and sex crazed, no one of the house even registers our presence until we attempt to press further into the expansion underground. After some demon confrontations, we continue into the underground ruins where shades, rage demons, skeletons, and revenants all try to slow us down. At the end, we find Lady Harimann kneeling before a desire demon demanding more power. Can the desire demon persuade us to her side? Is Sebastian truly as altruistic as he believes? The Arishok informs Hawke that there was a theft. Someone stole what they thought was the formula for explosive gaatlock powder but it was switched out with the formula for a poisonous gas. After a long trek through a smuggler's cave, Hawke confronts the obvious thief, Javaris, only to discover he's the fall guy and the real thief is an elf woman. Back to Lowtown Hawke goes to find a side alley covered in a green gas. After some fighting and closing off the gas barrels, Hawke comes face to face with the real thief and learns more about her motivations. Once all is done, Hawke returns to the Arishok to deliver the news–and to be given further insight into the Qunari occupation. IT'S TIME. After we give Bartrand our gold and maps, then it's time to select our party and get going. But not before Leandra begs us to leave our little sibling home. Hawke receives a mysterious letter requesting a meeting on the wounded coast to save some innocent lives. When Hawke and company arrive, it is Ser Thrask, our templar acquaintance whose own mage daughter chose to die rather than live in the circle. Thrask informs Hawke that there are apostate mages hiding in the caverns behind him. They escaped while being transported from Starkhaven to Kirkwall. Thrask begs Hawke to convince the mages to surrender because if they don't, another templar who has less room in his heart for mercy will flat out kill them all without giving it a second thought. Through the cavern Hawke goes to fight many skellingtons and come face to face with Decimus, the leader of this band of apostates. Decimus refuses to talk to us, takes us to be Templar allies immediately, and initiates a fight. Once he's dead, Hawke must decide what to do with the remaining mages. Kirkwall runs on rumors, and our buddy Varric is the sieve through which they filter down into actionable information. According to Varric, a chantry sister is roaming low town at night looking for help with a special task. The sister in question, Sister Petrice, can be found making a poor decision to follow some unsavory characters into an alleyway. After Hawke's intervention, Petrice offers us a job that is suited for someone who can move about the dark places of Kirkwall freely. Once we visit her safe house, we learn that she is in possession of a qunari mage, a saarebas, who was separated from his handler and Petrice wishes for us to bring him to freedom–whether he wants it or not. After a skirmish in Lowtown where Saarebas shows his teeth, Hawke emerges above ground to find a nasty surprise waiting for them. There are many people for us to speak to while we wander around Hightown, one of which is a magistrate who has a mission for us. He has heard that we are able to get things done on the sly and wants us to battle our way through ancient ruins to collect an escaped convict and bring him back for justice, the ancient ruins are filled with beasts that normal guards are not equipped to handle, but who cares if we throw our lives away right once we arrive at the ruins we learn that there is more to this convict than we were initially told, because of course there is this convict has a history of abducting and murdering elvin children, and nothing has been done about it. An elf whose daughter was most recently abducted and presumed dead requests that we put the murderer down instead of bringing him back alive as ordered. Apparently not in Captain Jeven's eyes–instead he accuses Aveline of showboating and threatens to throw both Aveline and Hawke in jail if they disobey orders again. Aveline refuses to let it end there, so with some investigating she learns that the ambush was meant for the lone patrol of Brennan, a guard who was carrying pay and orders from one location to another. She has passed this off to Donnic who is now in the same danger Brennan was. Hawke and Aveline must rescue Donnic and discover what Captain Jeven has been hiding. At Knotwood Hills, we find the Darkspawn trying to drag away a member of the Legion of the Dead– Sigrun did not consent. With the Warden's help, Sigrun returns to Kal'Hirol, the site of some serious darkspawn activity that obliterated her faction of the Legion, leaving only her behind. Here we finally see both sides of the Darkspawn schism push against each other–hurlock against hurlock, genlock against genlock. After winding our way through Kal'Hirol, we find that the Broodmothers are at it again and only we can stop them. The Warden enters the Wending Wood to investigate the caravan attacks and finds wreckage being picked over by looters. After running around the wood, fighting darkspawn, sylvans, arguing with a botanist, talking statues, and doing some research–it becomes clear that not everything is as simple as it appears. We encounter an elf hellbent on defending the woods as the home of her brutalized and murdered clan of Dalish as well as human mercenaries ripped apart–all a ruse put together by the darkspawn. Velenna relents with the evidence we present her, her sister's amulet found on the body of a darkspawn. She joins us with the intention of rescuing her sister or at least resolving what happened to her and we are pushed further along the narrative of this war between darkspawn. A mysterious being puts the squad to sleep and they wake again in captivity. Velenna's sister, disconcertingly presenting as someone tainted by darkspawn, arrives to help us escape. We fight through only to watch Seranni escape with the mysterious darkspawn leader. We take our first step out of Amaranthine toward Blackmarsh, where Grey Warden Kristoff is rumored to have disappeared. Blackmarsh is shrouded in mystery and fear–rumors of hauntings and monsters become reality as the warden moves through the marsh. Unfortunately, it's too late to rescue Kristoff. He was killed as a ploy by darkspawn to draw the Warden in and trap them in the fade. In order to escape, they must face the Baroness who long ago trapped an entire village in the fade to punish them for turning against her. With the help of a righteous spirit, they succeed–only to be dropped back into reality along with that spirit and the possessed baroness. Once we destroy her and her pride for good, the villagers can finally be free from their fade prison. Our new friend is not so lucky. He is trapped with us on the wrong side of the veil and needs guidance to figure out his next steps. We have finally moved on to Awakening. Whether you're importing a surviving Hero of Ferelden or starting fresh with a new warden, we enter the scene as the Warden Commander for Amaranthine, holdings granted to the Wardens as a result of their role in ending the Blight in Denerim. As always, the first day of the job goes to hell as we discover a sneak attack launched on the keep by darkspawn. They're organized, they're determined…and one of them can talk. With the help of Mhairi, we fight our way through the village to the keep where we rescue civilians, recruit a new mage and a familiar face, and face off with the mysterious talking darkspawn. Success leads to new grey wardens, but unfortunately, not everyone makes it through the joining. No matter what we chose before the battle against the Archdemon, Morrigan leaves our party and disappears as she promised she would. The Warden sets off to find her, whether to help an old friend or get revenge for a perceived slight is up to the player. Along the way we meet Ariane, a Dalish warrior who also hunts Morrigan, but to retrieve a stolen item, and Finn a mage who is interested in the elven artifacts called Eluvians. This new team works together to track down an active eluvian with the hope of finding Morrigan as well. When we do, we don't get quite what we expected.
