Kathy Fang was born in the Chinese Hospital in Chinatown in San Francisco. In this episode, meet and get to know Kathy. These days, she's the co-owner (with her dad) and chef at Fang restaurant in South of Market. She's also joined her parents in running their restaurant, the legendary House of Nanking. But her story starts with Lily and Peter (her mom and dad). We'll get to Lily and Peter's story, of course. But Kathy begins by talking about her unique position being born just up the hill from her parents' restaurant, and essentially growing up at House of Nanking. She sees herself as perfectly positioned not only to continue their story but also to share it widely. This podcast serves exactly that purpose. Prior to emigrating from China, neither Lily nor Peter had any professional kitchen experience. They came to the United States having been educated and were looking for good jobs and a better life. But they landed and reality hit. They needed money. Besides a lack of funds, there was the language barrier. Getting jobs in Chinatown restaurants proved the path of least resistence. Time spent behind the scenes in restaurants helped them learn English. Kathy describes her mom as the "risk-taker" of the pair. Lily started noticing that the folks who owned the places they worked in and ate at owned homes, had cars, sent their kids to private schools … that sort of thing. Opening a restuarant was her idea. After convincing her husband to pivot away from his plan to become a realtor, Lily's dad (Kathy's grandfather) found the location on Kearny Street, almost at Columbus, that became House of Nanking. With no experience running a business, let alone a restaurant, the Fangs opened in 1988. When they first welcomed diners, Peter was cooking traditional Shanghainese food, something fairly new to San Francisco at the time. Peter saw right away that they needed to make food for more than the 10 or so folks who knew their cuisine. He saw how incredible the locally grown and raised food in Northern California was, and soon sought to incorporate those ingredients into his dishes. One example was replacing the pork in a bun (bao) with fresh zucchinis and peas, to be accompanied by a side of peanut sauce. It was an instant hit. If Lily is the risk-taker of the couple, Peter is the creative force. From a young age, in a family with four kids total, he was always interested in food. He read cookbooks and watched his mom closely while she made food. She was always one to put her own spin on things, and that carried through to her son many years later. Though he obviously never fully pursued it, Peter did dabble in real estate. But between that and opening his restaurant, he had little time for administrative work. His young daughter, Kathy, started answering his calls when she was six. She repeated his requested message verbatim, doing her best to sound like an answering machine (remember those?). Kathy is pretty sure he never sold a single house. Success for House of Nanking wasn't immediate. After some time, Peter realized he needed to pivot away from Shanghainese food. But they needed some luck, too. And they got it when Peter Kaufman, the son of moviemaker Phillip Kaufman, showed up outside the restaurant with the daughter of famed Chinese actress Bai Yang, who lived in Shanghai. The daughter insisted that they try the restaurant because it smelled "like home." Peter Kaufman loved the food Peter Fang had made him so much that he told his dad, who soon came back with food critic Patty Unterman. Unterman's review of House of Nanking appeared in the Sunday paper—the Bible for folks in the days before the internet. That review appeared next to a column about a little place called French Laundry. Both restaurants got three stars—but their affordability dollar signs were dramatically different. The next day of service at House of Nanking saw the first of its now trademark long lines to get in. We turn at this point in the conversation to talk about Kathy and her life. From her earliest memories, she recalls just being in her parents' restaurant all the time. It was an exciting time in San Francisco—the late Eighties/early Nineties. Broadway and its liveliness were basically next door. Life was colorful for young Kathy. She knew her life was atypical. "Sometimes I wish I could (be like the other kids and) go to sleep at a decent time," she says looking back. She sometimes slept in the restaurant. But she also go to eat at North Beach restaurants with her parents after they closed up their own eatery for the night. I ask Kathy to name drop names of places they went—New City (the best Alfredo) and Basta Pasta (veal piccata) stand out. Kathy didn't do quote-unquote normal kid things until middle school. Up to that point, it was all restaurant, all the time. One notable exception was seeing Chinese movies at the Great Star Theater, another thing kids didn't normally do. At my prompting, Kathy rattles off the San Francisco schools she went to. It starts with Jefferson Elementary. Then she went to Convent of the Sacred Heart for middle school and high school. Around the time she started middle school, as noted earlier, her life changed. She spent less and less time at the restaurant and more time doing homework. She saw her parents much less in this era, too. But she did get to see her dad when he'd pick her up from school. They'd almost always go eat in Chinatown after that. Those meals formed the foundation of a strong father-daughter relationship for Kathy and Peter. We end Part 1 with Kathy sharing all the sports she played throughout her school days. In varsity volleyball, playing back row, she had a "killer serve that no one could return." Check back Thursday for Part 2 with Kathy Fang. We recorded this episode at House of Nanking in Chinatown in December 2025. Photography by Dan Hernandez

In 2025's last full-length episode, your hosts brought some hot fics and even hotter takes to the table as we discussed our perspective on what fandoms "hit (or remained in) the zeitgeist" this year. From The Pitt to Arcane to Interview With the Vampire, our conversation led us to discuss topics such as: humor as a cultural indicator the impact of big media companies in an increasingly siloed media landscape the risks of creating progressive media and science fiction as a reflection of social anxieties The fics we discussed this episode were the fifth element (series) by copycat_punisher (The Pitt), love, letting go by theroyalsavage (Arcane), and Cunk on Fangs by beemovieerotica (Cunk on Earth, Interview With the Vampire).
The Chinese EV market is entering 2026 facing unprecedented challenges as subsidies end, competition intensifies, and market growth stalls. This episode analyzes what NIO and other Chinese automakers face in 2026 based on recent statements from XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng and NIO CEO Li Bin, both warning that next year's competition will be more brutal and bloody than 2025.On November 20, 2025, after launching the XPeng X9 extended-range version, He Xiaopeng stated: "I think every car company is on tenterhooks. Everyone wants to go far and achieve steady progress. A year ago we could hardly have imagined the changes we have now, and we can hardly imagine them a year from now. The only thing I can be sure of is that the competition will be even more brutal and bloody." The following day, NIO CEO Li Bin echoed this sentiment: "I agree with what Mr. Xiaopeng said. The intensity of competition in the Chinese auto market is actually increasing every year. Which year is not bloody? Which year is not cruel? Perhaps it will not be until 2035 that the pattern will truly stabilize."Three core realities will define 2026 for Chinese EV companies. First, the market has shifted from blitzkrieg to war of attrition. Li Bin explained that defeating competitors with a single move is extremely difficult, stating that being one year ahead in core technologies is already remarkable. He emphasized that success requires being one to two percentage points more efficient than competitors in every aspect, with no weaknesses allowed. This is a long-term marathon requiring comprehensive capabilities rather than breakthrough innovations.Second, the Chinese auto market is shrinking rather than growing. From November 1 to November 23, 2025, national passenger vehicle retail sales showed both year-over-year and month-over-month declines. The era of rapid growth has ended, replaced by competition for existing market share. With trade-in subsidies completely phased out and purchase tax subsidies cut in half starting January 1, 2026, market conditions will worsen in Q1 2026. Li Bin acknowledged that early reduction of trade-in subsidies eliminated the year-end boost effect in Q4 2025, with all NIO models except ES8, Firefly, and ET9 affected to varying degrees, explaining November's month-over-month delivery decline to 36,275 units.Third, product launch frequency has become a key battleground with divergent strategies. XPeng plans to launch seven extended-range models in 2026. HarmonyOS will release more than 20 new cars next year. Leapmotor, having achieved its 500,000 unit target 45 days early, is targeting 1 million deliveries in 2026 with multiple new models across A and D series. However, Li Bin announced NIO will only launch three new models in 2026, stating: "I don't think we have to keep releasing new models. Look at this year, we only have two models and they are selling quite well. We don't necessarily have to release them so frequently, and the team may not be able to manage it."XPeng's market capitalization has fallen nearly 30 percent since mid-November despite announcing ambitious physical AI initiatives at their early November Tech Day, including humanoid robot IRON, flying cars, second-generation VLA large model, and three Robotaxi models planned for 2026 launch. The company repositioned as a mobility explorer in physical AI and globally embodied intelligence company. In contrast, Tesla's Optimus robot demonstrations contributed to Tesla's market cap surging over 40 percent in the second half of 2025 despite showing similar or less advanced capabilities. This valuation gap highlights how US markets reward technology narratives while Chinese markets remain skeptical, valuing Chinese EV companies primarily as automakers rather than technology platforms despite comparable or superior technical capabilities.

This should be a given for Berserk, but these chapters get dark, tragic, and disturbing. Sadly, it's our beautiful, but flawed boy, Berk, himself, who is the perpetrator of this messed up stuff. But it's not that simple! Much to discuss here as the Beast of Darkness begins to take its hold on old Gutsy, causing him to wrestle with (and largely lose against) his deepest desires…resulting in the simple minded, traumatized Casca to recoil from him as a villain for the foreseeable future. The story of New England's vampires begins with a scourge whose tragic trail is visible in cemeteries throughout the region. Incredible as it may seem today, vampires preyed upon their not-so-distant ancestors. Vampire attacks increased dramatically during the eighteenth century and remained the leading cause of death in New England throughout the nineteenth century. But this unseen killer did not resemble the clever Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's imagination. Indeed, it was so small that it was undetectable. New England's authentic vampires, you see, were pathogenic microbes (“bacteria with fangs,” as a nurse once described them). Prior to the twentieth century, a diagnosis of consumption (as pulmonary tuberculosis was called at that time) was a virtual death sentence. My Special Guest Is Michael Bell Michael E. Bell has a Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University, Bloomington; his dissertation topic was African American voodoo beliefs and practices. He has an M.A. in Folklore and Mythology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a B.A. , with M.A. level course work completed, in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Arizona, Tucson. Bell was the Consulting Folklorist at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, Providence, Rhode Island, for more than twenty-five years. He has also taught courses in folklore, English, anthropology and American studies at several colleges and universities. His book, Food for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's Vampires, was a BookSense 76 Pick and winner of the Lord Ruthven Assembly Award for Best Nonfiction Book on Vampires. He has completed the manuscript for a second book on American vampires, titled The Vampire's Grasp: The Hidden History of Consumption in New England. Michael Bell and his wife, Carole, split their time between Rhode Island and Texas. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Learn how tuberculosis was once mistaken for vampire attacks in New England.2. Discover why families dug up loved ones to stop the spread of a deadly disease. If you value this podcast and want to enjoy more episodes please come and find us on https://www.patreon.com/Haunted_History_Chronicles to support the podcast, gain a wealth of additional exclusive podcasts, writing and other content.Links to all Haunted History Chronicles Social Media Pages, Published Materials and more: https://linktr.ee/hauntedhistorychronicles?fbclid=IwAR15rJF2m9nJ0HTXm27HZ3QQ2Llz46E0UpdWv-zePVn9Oj9Q8rdYaZsR74INEW Podcast Shop: https://www.teepublic.com/user/haunted-history-chroniclesBuy Me A Coffee https://ko-fi.com/hauntedhistorychronicles Guest Links Book Links: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B007ZFDTMY/allbooks?ingress=0&visitId=2acd0188-d7fb-48a4-9edc-2eaf8d21702b&ref_=ap_rdr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-bell-a7a15015/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100049057788689
