Check out a secret "icebreaker" interview with Jackie at patreon.com/hkpodcasts. In this conversation, Jackie Malton shares her experiences working in prisons and her insights into the psychology of criminals, particularly focusing on masculinity, addiction, and the impact of childhood trauma. She discusses her interviews with a serial killer and the complexities of rehabilitation, self-discovery, and the importance of storytelling in understanding human behaviour. Malton emphasizes the need for self-reflection and the role of mentorship in personal growth, while also addressing the challenges faced by individuals in the prison system. Jackie and Hugh also discuss various aspects of policing in London, emphasizing the need for geographical restructuring, rebuilding public trust, and understanding gang culture. She explores the role of direct entry in policing, the challenges faced by officers, and the importance of rehabilitation in prisons. --- Jackie Malton is a UK-based television script consultant and former senior police officer. Born in 1951, she made history as one of the first openly gay women to rise through the ranks of the Metropolitan Police Service. Malton's remarkable career spanned multiple areas, including the Flying Squad, Murder Squad, and Fraud Squad. Malton is perhaps most famous for being the inspiration behind the iconic character DCI Jane Tennison in Lynda La Plante's Prime Suspect drama series. Send us a Text Message. The band Rehab originated in Warner Robins, GA, in the 1970s, with Danny Boone Alexander's musical upbringing playing a pivotal role. Influenced by the music his family played, including Johnny Paycheck's “Take This Job and Shove It,” and memorable experiences like listening to “Sky Rockets in Flight” at the Crazy 8 Race Track during the Bicentennial, Danny's passion for music was evident from a young age. Initially drawn to rock and southern rock, his musical tastes broadened with the emergence of the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, and NWA, cementing his love for hip hop. Danny's first rap performance was at 15 during a high school pep rally, igniting his pursuit of a music career. In his late teens, Danny began working professionally with his friend Denny “Steaknife” Campbell under the name "Prime Suspect." The duo's collaboration led to the formation of Rehab after meeting Jason Brooks. Despite Steaknife's legal troubles, Danny and Jason signed with Epic Records, releasing “Southern Discomfort” in 2000. The album featured contributions from Goodie Mob's Cee-Lo and Big Gipp, as well as Cody Chesnutt, selling over 140,000 copies and reaching the top 15 of the Modern Rock charts with “It Don't Matter.” They toured nationally, sharing stages with Linkin Park and the Kottonmouth Kings during the Vans Warped Tour.Following creative differences, Danny and Brooks parted ways, and Rehab was revitalized in 2005. The band recorded “Graffiti the World” with notable contributors like Bonecrusher, Phil Tan, and Billy Hume. The album was initially released independently until Danny signed with Universal Records in 2008. A collaboration with Hank Williams Jr. on “Sittin' at a Bar” garnered a CMT nomination for Wide-Open Country Video of the Year in 2009. Rolling Stone featured Rehab's renamed single, “The Bartender Song,” on its "Hot List." Jackie is a former DCI with the metropolitan Police. She started her career in Leicestershire she now works within the true crime world. Whilst in the Police she advised some of the most iconic police dramas on the television. Jackie was the inspiration for Lynda La Plantes character DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect.Jackie joined the police as a cadet and on the 7th July 1970 she was sworn in as a constable. At that time she was part of the Police Women's Department she worked in Highfields in Leicester City. Jackie was promoted to Sgt after 3 years' service she became a Detective Sergeant in quick succession. After 9 years' service she made the decision to go to the Metropolitan Police and was encouraged by Michael Hurst. In 1980 she went to the CID as a DS. Her initial major crime deployment was on the New Cross Fire. Graham Stockwell was the commander on the investigation, and he insisted that there would be no room for criticism in the way the team conducted the enquiry. The coroner inappropriately called a quick inquest to appease racial harmony – The inquest resulted in an open verdict. Jackie was seconded to the abduction and murder of Vishal Mehrotra - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Vishal_Mehrotra she maintains the momentum of this investigation with former Detective Sean Keep and BBC journalist Colin Campbell and is an integral part of the Podcast “ Vishal” which has recently won awards at the True Crime awards.Jackie was head hunted by Commander Stockwell to go to the Flying Squad at Rotherhithe. Her reception was frosty to say the least. Misogyny was in full flow, and she was subjected to abusive behaviour from one of her colleagues Sgt Phil William. Jackie was posted to West End Central and was on duty the day that Yvonne Fletcher was murdered and vividly remembers attending the scene. It was during her time at West End Central that she experienced corruption. Having exposed the individuals, she was accused of having a lesbian relationship with her junior colleague. The Inspector involved stood trial at the Old Bailey, he was convicted and went to prison. Having been promoted to DCI, Jackie was approached by author Lynda Le Plante. Lynda was seeking advice regarding a publication. The outcome was Helen Mirren became the character DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect Since leaving the job Jackie has trained as a counsellor and assists in the rehabilitation of offenders who are in prison. She also works with ex- offenders and has formed professional friendships with former armed robbers such as Noel Razor Smith. We discuss the modern police service and the issues faced and the great work carried out – Brick cop gets a mention! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

New episode out now! We cover the first episode of Prime Suspect 1973 (or Prime Suspect: Tennison if you're American), a 2017 prequel series about the early days of Jane Tennison's law enforcement career. We enjoyed the more nuanced take it had regarding many things, including how the detectives treated drug users, how they presented the autopsy scene, and the time the show spent on the grief of the family. We discuss the differences in how the women of the police force are treated versus the men, talk about how they establish “good cop” Len Bradfield and the “bad cops” of the other detectives, love the character of Morgan and how competent she is, and continue to not understand London police organization. We love the 1970s setting and think it really adds a whole other level to the show; the costumes, set decoration, and especially the excellent music selection really enhanced the vibe. Katy points out multiple obvious things, Carrie was not impressed by the wigs, Maddy leads a moment of silence, and Mack thought there were too many greasy white boys. We also discuss the trope of a quirky medical examiner and how shows try to deal with the reality of a dead body, get excited about radios and ticker tape, learn Carrie was right about London buildings being cleaner, and do not approve of puking on screen. Listen to hear more about bleached Henry Cavill, British accents, Scone Palace, Night Court, and more! Plus, try to figure out which one of us had Covid while recording, which one was hungover, and which one had a few audio dropouts fixed in post! Enjoy! TW: Drug addiction, sex work, sex work of a minor, murder of a sex worker, police abuse, misogyny, quality of low income housing, Grenfell Tower fire Show Notes: It should be noted that one theory as to why the police force seemed to be more delicate/nonchalant about the drug use and methadone clinic is that this does take place both in the UK and pre-Reagan and the “War On Drugs”, which very much criminalized and villainized drug use, especially in communities of lower income. The focus shifted to criminalization and prison rather than any sort of addiction treatment or rehabilitation. One possible origin of the quirky coroner/medical examiner is the Canadian show Wojeck that aired from 1966-1968, about a “coroner who regularly fights moral injustices raised by the deaths he investigated”. According to Wikipedia this was the first Western TV series to feature forensic pathology as the main investigative resource for crime solving. This show then inspired Quincy, M.E., a popular American show that aired from 1976-1983 about a LA County medical examiner, who was more quirky than the coroner character in Wojeck. About the Grenfell Tower fire from Wikipedia: “On 14 June 2017, a high-rise fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell Tower block of flats in North Kensington, West London, at 00:54 BST and burned for 60 hours. Seventy people died at the scene, and two people died later in hospital, with more than 70 injured and 223 escaping”. More details here from Wikipedia and here from the BBC.

BREAKING BTK KILLER NEWS!
The notorious BTK serial killer, who once terrorized Kansas, is once again making headlines. Dennis Rader, the man infamously known for his chilling modus operandi to "bind, torture, and kill," is now considered the “prime suspect” in at least two cold cases, as announced by authorities on Wednesday. Cold Cases Reopened: The spark that reignited interest in Rader's potential involvement in additional crimes was the renewed investigation into the 1976 disappearance of Cynthia Kinney in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. This case, having been shelved and revisited intermittently over the decades, saw a resurgence of activity last December. “With our proximity to Kansas and Wichita, Rader's known territory, it was only prudent to delve deeper into our cold cases," said Osage County, Oklahoma, Undersheriff Gary Upton. “The result was the unearthing of numerous unsolved homicides and missing persons cases that potentially have BTK's fingerprints all over them." Further compounding the suspicion, another cold case being revisited is the tragic death of Shawna Beth Garber. The 22-year-old's remains were discovered in December 1990 in McDonald County, Missouri. The circumstances of her death were hauntingly familiar: she had been raped, strangled, and restrained with different bindings. Her body, lying undiscovered for nearly two months, was not identified until as recently as 2021. Rader's Reign of Terror: Dennis Rader, while maintaining the facade of a city code inspector in Kansas, committed a series of gruesome murders, confessing to 10 killings in the Wichita area between 1974 and 1991. His sinister activities caught up with him in 2005, leading to his arrest. Later that year, Rader was handed 10 consecutive life sentences in prison. Recent Developments: In an atmosphere of palpable anticipation, Upton shared limited information about a search conducted near Rader's former property in Park City, Kansas. Described as “items of interest,” these findings will undergo meticulous examination to ascertain their connection to the cold cases. Collaborating with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Upton aims to shed light on the dark corners of Rader's past. Phil Bostian, the police chief in the Wichita suburb of Park City, mentioned the involvement of public works in the investigation, hinting at the removal of cement and excavation activities. Rader's Family Cooperates: In a twist that adds depth to the narrative, Kerri Rawson, Rader's daughter, revealed her collaboration with investigators this summer. Rawson met with her father after years of no communication, suspecting that her father might have concealed items related to the unresolved cases on his property, notably under a metal shed he constructed. This shed, along with Rader's previous residence, has since been razed. Rawson additionally directed investigators to the location where the family dog was buried. With a mix of hope and trepidation, she expressed her wish to find conclusive answers. "I'm still not 100% sure my dad did commit any more at this point," she remarked. However, in her words, if her father had indeed harmed others, "we need answers." The Path Ahead: The renewed interest in Rader's possible involvement in additional crimes highlights the never-ending quest for justice. With investigators leaving no stone unturned, and with cooperation from unexpected quarters, the hope is to finally close the chapter on cases that have haunted families for decades. These developments remind us that even in the darkest of tales, the pursuit of truth remains relentless. As the story unfolds, communities affected by Rader's heinous acts look forward to a resolution and, perhaps, a sense of closure. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Jack the Ripper Part three will cover what is known as, “the double event.” Both Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were found killed on this September night. Both women shared a lot in common with the previous two victims. They'd struggled through pretty much their entire lives just to make ends meet and then were met with this as their end. In this part we'll start to entertain the theory that Jack perhaps had some kind of medical background and you'll see just why one might think so once you dive into the episode! Jack the Ripper part two brings us the absolutely horrifying murder of Annie Chapman. Annie's story, much like the rest of the women who were killed, is incredibly devastating. She was struggling with sobriety when she landed on the shady streets in Spitalfields in the East end and was having a terrible time trying to find work to just get by. Robert Anderson, the head of the criminal investigations department was still on vacation, Sir Charles Warren's ego stepped on the scene and they were not even one step closer to uncovering the culprits identity.Check out these great books on the case:Jack the Ripper and The Case For Scotland Yard's Prime Suspect by Robert HouseThe Complete Jack the Ripper by Donald RumbelowThe Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie RubenholdThe Hidden Lives of Jack the Ripper's Victims by Robert HumeThe Ripper Code by Thomas ToughillAlso check out these sites on the case:JackTheRipper.orgCasebook: Jack The RipperSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Alaina takes us to the streets of Whitechapel for part one of Jack The Ripper, and boy is it a stark picture she's painting us. Whitechapel was dark, damp, dirty and downright desolate at the time Jack The Ripper was roaming the streets. People were living in all kinds of horrible conditions, butchers and slaughterhouse workers were walking around covered in blood and because things were like this, it made the perfect stomping ground for a vicious murderer. Mary Ann "Polly" Nichols was the Ripper's first victim and the main person that we'll go over in part one while Alaina also gives us a background on a couple of other potential early victims. Stay tuned for (we're thinkin') three more!Check out these great books on the case:Jack the Ripper and The Case For Scotland Yard's Prime Suspect by Robert HouseThe Complete Jack the Ripper by Donald RumbelowThe Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie RubenholdThe Hidden Lives of Jack the Ripper's Victims by Robert HumeThe Ripper Code by Thomas ToughillAlso check out these sites on the case:JackTheRipper.orgCasebook: Jack The RipperSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
