READ ALONG WITH STORY AT: www.StoryLinkRadio.com The Cave Girl is a lost world novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. In an instant there sloughed from the heart and mind and soul of Waldo Emerson Smith-Jones every particle of civilization and culture and refinement that has required countless ages in the building, stripping him naked, age on age, down to the primordial beast that has begot his first human progenitor. He saw red as he leaped for the throat of the man-beast whose ruthless hands were upon Nadara Rolling, tearing and biting, they battled-each seeking a death hold on the other. Nadara’s eyes were wide with fascination. She leaned forward with parted lips, drinking in every detail of the conflict between the two beasts. Ah, but was the yellow-haired giant really fighting for the possession of her, or merely in protection, because she is a woman?

His researches reveal that the church has a sinister history involving a cult called the Church of Starry Wisdom and is dreaded by the local migrant inhabitants as being haunted by a primeval evil. The being can only go abroad in darkness, and is hence constrained to the tower at night by the presence of the lights of the city. However, when the city electric power is weakened during a thunderstorm, the local people are terrified by the sounds coming from the church.

READ ALONG AT: www.StoryLinkRadio.com This is considered the first vampire story, although not the first English vampire story. That honor goes to John Polidori’s The Vampyre, which you can also listen to hear on StoryLinkRadio Podcast. because Wake Not The Dead wasn’t translated into English until 1823. It can be considered the first modern vampire romance. It is about a man who loves his dead wife so much he has a necromancer return her to life, only to discover she has become a vampire. Walter so loved his first wife and mourns her passing that even his new wife and family cannot ease his pain. A necromancer brings her back to life, despite his warnings “Wake Not the Dead.” She is even more beautiful than before, and it seems at first to be everything he hoped for. But this is not a romance but a horror story and a cautionary tale so over time things change. Although in the original German version Teick never actually calls her a vampire, she drinks blood, avoids sunlight, and possesses a power to hypnotize her victims. All the classic traits we associate with vampires. Even this earliest stage, the vampire has become an erotic creature bound up with our deepest and darkest fantasies.

For the ancient Irish, the dead did not simply go away. They could, if they so desired, come back to interact with the living in various ways. They could come back in order to warn, advise, admonish or convey secrets to the living or to fulfill tasks which they had left uncompleted in life. And those who did return to the world of the living were not always the insubstantial phantoms of the Victorian imagination. Rather they were corporeal figures who could make their presence felt in actual and substantial ways. Grainne Daly is the story of a desperate, unmarried girl, anxious to make a life for herself and her mother, and the shadowy evil of the stranger who comes to their door asking for her hand in wedlock.
