Keep your eyes and ears open, Slushies, the landscape is full of lore. Egan has us pondering possibilities. Once upon a time folks believed in Selkies, shapeshifting seals who make folks fall in love with them in their human form. Who knew it's bad luck to open the door on Christmas Eve for fear trolls will maraud your house? You've been warned. Check out Danish artist Thomas Dambo's mammoth sculpted trolls hidden in plain sight. And if you want to deep dive into another legendary landscape – aka a brick-and-mortar bookstore – be sure to check out Parker Posey's documentary The Booksellers. This is a live recording of a conversation at The Barrel House, Kendal as part of Kendal Mountain Festival on Saturday 23rd November 2024. Finlay Wild talks to The Selkies (Suzy Connor, Lizzie Goodfellow, Heloise Le Clanche and Cat Riaz) about their journey to the finish line of the 2024 Scottish Islands Peaks Race (SIPR), as the first all-female team to compete in 19 years. The SIPR is a gruelling sailing and running race involving sailing between - and running up peaks - on Mull, Jura and Arran in a non stop race from Oban to Troon, held in May each year. The fifth member of the team was sailor Kirsteen Woods. The team first had to find each other and a boat to even get to the start line. Muir Anderson lent his boat Dipper, and after a significant amount of work to make her race ready, the team were ready to compete. Navigating what is traditionally a male dominated race, they finished in a little under 68 hours in a close run race with the chasing boat. It was a pleasure to meet the team and hear their recollections of the journey - complete with anecdotes about purgatorial rowing, 7am champagne, and terrible singing! And if anyone has a spare yacht for 2025... Website: https://chthonia.netPatreon: https://patreon.com/chthoniaMerch: https://chthoniapodcast.creator-spring.com/School: https://instituteforfemininemyth.orgIn this week's episode we look at the seal women of fairy lore, the Selkies. Selkies are beautiful fairies who take off their sealskin to dance by the water. In the stories, a fisherman will see them and steal their sealskin so that they cannot return home. The Selkie is then compelled to be the wife of the fisherman, until she is able to find out where her sealskin is hidden, at which point she retrieves it and returns home again. This story is reflective of the traditional male relationship to the Anima, and how he can never truly possess her by conquering her.
It being Halloween, we thought it fitting to talk about ‘the faeries' who you may see or not this evening. Síne Quinn has written 'The Faerie Isle: Tales and Traditions of Ireland's Forgotten Folklore'. Both Síne and illustrator Dermot Flynn join Oliver in studio.
Happy Spooky Wednesday, ghouls and zombies! We are in our second week of Urban Legends October and this week we are featuring legends from Scotland! First up, Kala talks about the myths known as Selkies and Kelpies. They are both shapeshifting creatures known for haunting the waters, but have very different temperaments. While stories of the Selkies portray them as sweet creatures who encounter tragic circumstances, Kelpies are malevolent creatures who create tragic circumstances. And Brittany tells us the tale of A75 Kinmount Straight, also known as “The Ghost Road.” If you dare to travel this highway, beware that humans (and possibly chickens, wild cats, dogs, and phantoms?) may run out in front of your vehicle at any given moment. But you don't have to worry about a crash because when you pull over, you will find they were never actually there (OooooOooo... spooky...). Many a lorry driver have shared their stories... and we're pretty sure this is a road we will never want to drive down. If not because of the ghosts, it's because of ✨anxiety ✨.
OCI's Carey Bonnell says 'The Calvert' uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure bottom trawling has a low environmental footprint + Filmmaker Alexa Jane Jerrett says 'Bedlamer' was inspired by selkie folklore.

Welcome back to Mystic Bayou, where a tiny town meets supernatural meets strong women and hot men. We are excited to get back into this series and review book three. Sonja is human and Dr. Hottie, I mean, Dr. Will, is a selkie shifter. The story continues as our main characters continue to manage and uncover the mystery of the magical rift that is turning humans into supers. Sonja is a high level director who knows how to manage a business and, though very reluctant at first, must team up with Will to ensure this rift doesn't completely destroy Mystic Bayou. And all while avoiding how hot they are for each other. While Sonja isn't really looking for love, she can't help but to be pulled in by Will's magical pelt bracelet, and he can't help but to be overprotective of it. ***We would love and appreciate it if you could Subscribe then Rate & Review us on iTunes! I'm so happy to introduce you to my friend and fellow sea lover Helen Armstrong, aka The Wandering Selkie. Photographer, outdoor swimmer and advocate for joy, and playful living. Celebrating Ireland, being active outdoors, and most importantly, the community and the connections that come with it.Selkies are found in Celtic and Norse mythology (also silkie, sylkie, selchie) or selkie folk, meaning seal folk. Selkies are mythological beings, capable of therianthropy, changing from seal to human form by shedding their skin. The seal people, once upon the shore, were said to have danced in the moonlight. Sadly, after this, the selkie story usually has darker, tragic aspects. Sometimes they fall in love and give their seal skin willingly to their partner to store away safely, or it's taken from them. Either way, when their seal skin is taken away, the selkie loses their identity, their power and is trapped in human form. Helen told me "When I slip into the water, I get a feeling of being at home. (Maybe after the initial, “Why do I do this?" questioning phase as you wade out). I feel in my element in the sea, relaxed, at peace and at ease. Feeling held by the water, enjoying feeling small as I float and look out to the wide horizon. Being immersed in nature, feeling the cold tingle my skin, the wind or rain on my face. Cloud watching. Bird watching. Listening to the movement of the water, or squeals and shouts of swimmers on their way in! Seeing the popularity of outdoor swimming rocket during the pandemic & the almost universally positive effect on new swimmers, shows that the benefits are undeniable."Starting in July 2020, I began a daily dipping challenge and finished 365 daily dips in July 2021. I'd had a private account until then, but changed to public to connect with the swim community and share my swims & adventures. That's when The Wandering Selkie was created. Lockdown travel restrictions lifted during the challenge and I delighted in the freedom again to roam to dip in other wild waters, at different spots along the coastline, inland at loughs and mountain waterfalls."You can connect with Helen on Instagram and share her adventures. We hope you adore this episode and find it supportive for your journey towards a deeper relationship with yourself, love, abundance, your magick and creating a wider foundation for your business to prosper. Trauma In The Body: Healing Through Magick In this episode, Courtney Pearl, a multifaceted spiritual practitioner, dives into the significance of intuitive card reading with a focus on the impact of trauma on the body. She begins by performing a card reading, interpreting the 'five of wands' from the Ethereal Visions deck and relating its turmoil to the struggles of diagnosing and healing physical ailments tied to stress and trauma. Courtney introduces a folk tale about Selkies to illustrate the concept of returning to one's true self and emphasizes the importance of recognizing how events and experiences embed themselves within our physical form, affecting our health. She contrasts Western and Eastern medicinal approaches, advocating for a holistic view that encompasses emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. Moreover, Courtney stresses the value of recognizing and addressing the hidden emotional energies that contribute to physical conditions, offering insights into methods like muscle testing and Reiki for identifying and healing these issues. Sharing personal stories and client experiences, she explores the interplay between emotional trauma, stress, and physical manifestations, encouraging listeners to seek healing beyond conventional medical approaches. Concluding with listener questions, Courtney prepares to delve into generational and ancestral healing in upcoming episodes, reinforcing her message of personal empowerment and the transformative potential of magick in everyday life. #EmotionalHealing #GenerationalHealing #TraumaRecovery #EnergyHealing #SelfDiscovery #InnerGrowth #SpiritualWellness #HolisticHealth #MagickalHealing #CourtneyPearlJourney 00:00 Welcome to the World of Magick with Courtney Pearl 00:19 Diving into Tarot: The Five of Wands and Its Message 04:53 Exploring Trauma Through the Lens of a Scottish Folktale 09:21 The Body's Memory: How Trauma and Stress Manifest Physically 09:42 Embracing Eastern Wisdom: A Holistic Approach to Healing 15:44 Muscle Testing and the Power of Emotional Processing 18:33 Understanding Trauma: It's More Than You Think 25:11 The Magick of Healing: Techniques and Personal Experiences 34:59 Listener Q&A: Healing Emotional Immaturity for Future Generations 39:09 Looking Ahead: Generational Healing and Its Impact

In this week's Bonus Episode, Martin and Eleanor dive into the murky history of Selkies.Part of the "Three Ravens Bestiary" bonus series, they start by talking through the modern view of these mystical half-human, half-seal sea creatures, and chat about the most popular selkie myth of recent times - one of kidnap, stolen seal skins, and forced marriage. But then they wheel back to the origins of selkies, as found in Norse sagas, the Celtic 'Lore of Places' and elsewhere, too. After a brief chat about the history of seal hunting, seal-skin products like Sporrans, and the Inuit goddess Sedna, they then explore the hidden depths behind selkie symbolism, from webbed feet and the number 7 to ideas of liminality and the surprising connections between selkies and swans in folklore...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Shapeshifting is an ancient ability that appears in cultures around the world across a vast period of time. It appears in an array of 'types' of shapeshifting. Some creatures can simply shift their form due to a natural ability. Gods often change their form (hello, Zeus), but they can also change the form of others. Demonic activity, sorcery, and being cursed might also lead to a person shifting their form. Since this is such a vast and multifaceted topic, we'll focus on those creatures able to change their own shape at will, and as ever, I'll stick to the British Isles. Let's look at shapeshifting fairies and supernatural creatures in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Hey Campers, this week we will be looking into the lore of some beautiful mermaid… seal creatures? Legends and Lore from Scotland's Highlands. Both Kimmy and Ryan will be discussing the legend of Selkies. They will be diving into the history of their connections with seal hunting, men that can't take no for an answer, and the ridiculous amount of male Selkie smut found online. We hope you enjoy this week's episode! And remember campers, be the least favorite of seven children so you don't turn into a rock and don't kidnap a naked woman to be your bride. WANT MORE ALOREING?
