We have a special guest, Christi Holder, LMBT, to discuss a classic holiday movie, It's a Wonder Life, from the perspective of soul sensitivity amid life's challenges. George, the main character in the story, has dreams outside of his small town, but due to his father's passing, he has to run the family business, a savings and loan bank. Learn about a well-lived life, even though George does not initially feel this due to his challenges. He ultimately sees the beauty of his life's adventures and what is truly important."It's a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American Christmas supernatural drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra. It is based on the short story and booklet "The Greatest Gift," self-published by Philip Van Doren Stern in 1943, loosely based on the 1843 Charles Dickens novella A Christmas Carol. The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams to help others in his community and whose thoughts of suicide on Christmas Eve bring about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody. Clarence shows George all the lives he touched and what the world would be like if he had not existed.Although nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, It's a Wonderful Life initially received mixed reviews and was unsuccessful at the box office. Theatrically, the film's break-even point was $6.3 million, about twice the production cost, a figure it did not come close to achieving on its initial release. Because of the film's disappointing sales, Capra was seen by some studios as having lost his ability to produce popular, financially successful films. Its copyright expired in 1974 following a lack of renewal, and it entered the public domain, allowing it to be broadcast without licensing or royalty fees. (Yes, it was based on a short story The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern and you can read it for yourself in under 15 minutes.)The Greatest Gift is the story of a man named George Bailey who wants to commit suicide. An unnamed stranger gives George his wish to see what life would be like if he had never been born. In the end, he chooses life. It’s a wonderful look at Point of View and Narrative Device this week, as Leslie opens Season 6 of the podcast with It’s a Wonderful Life. This 1946 perennial holiday favorite was directed by Frank Capra, and written by Francis Goodrich, Albert Hackett, and Frank Capra. The screenplay was based on the short story “The Greatest Gift,” originally published as a Christmas card in 1943 by Philip Van Doren Stern. Each week one of the Roundtable team—Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—aims to get to the bottom of a specific story principle by analyzing a film, novel, or short story. The rest of us analyze the story according to our own chosen topics, and together we deepen our knowledge and level up our craft.Click here for the full show notes.

(Yes, it was based on a short story The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern and you can read it for yourself in under 15 minutes.) The Greatest Gift is the story of a man named George Bailey who wants to commit suicide. An unnamed stranger gives George his wish to see how life would be like if he had never been born. In the end, he chooses life. Van Doren Stern wrote this short story (which took him several years to finish) in 1944 and at first, he could not find anyone willing to publish it. Eventually, he self-published 200 pamphlets and sent as a Christmas card to family and friends. Director Frank Capra eventually landed the property and decided to completely revamp the story to include George’s childhood and more. It is now considered a classic film but at the time it was a bit of a box office failure and Capra never really had the opportunity to see how his work influenced generations of storytellers for decades now. His friends have taken different and often worse paths through life due to his absence. His little brother, whom he had saved from death in a swimming accident, perished without George to rescue him. George finds the woman he knows as his wife married to someone else. He offers her a complimentary upholstery brush, but he is forced to leave the house by her husband. Their son pretends to shoot him with a toy cap gun, and shouts, "You're dead. Why won't you die?" George returns to the bridge and questions the strange man. The man explains that George wanted more when he had already been given the greatest gift of all: the gift of life. George digests the lesson and begs the man to return his life. The man agrees. George returns home and finds everything restored to normal. He hugs his wife and tells her that he thought he had lost her. She is confused. As he is about to explain, his hand bumps a brush on the sofa behind him. Without turning around, George knows the brush was the one he had presented to her earlier. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hmphaudiobooks/support

December 25, 2017 - This week, our time machine visits 1939, clicks on the radio, and listens to The Campbell Playhouse production of A Christmas Carol hosted by Orson Welles and staring Lionel Barrymore as Ebenezer Scrooge. When Charles Dickens published the story in 1843, he did so as what we'd call social commentary, reflecting the soul-searching of his fellow Britons about the true meaning of Christmas. Even 175 years later, we can see the importance of Dickens' central themes in our own world, where so many TV shows have parodied the tale. Like the WPIX Yule Log here in New York City, Lionel Barrymore's Christmas Eve performances grew into a tradition from the first in 1934 to his final appearance in 1953, a year before his death. Barrymore also features in a great television Christmas tradition, as the miserly Mr. Potter in Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life, written by a fellow Rutgers alumnus: Philip Van Doren Stern. We hope you enjoy listening to this radio play and the interview with Mr. Welles that follows, as much as we enjoyed researching the stories behind it. As Tiny Tim says, "God bless us, everyone."

The Patrick Coffin Show | Interviews with influencers | Commentary about culture | Tools for transformation

Todd Komarnicki is a natural raconteur. He knows well how to distill vast amounts of story information into a resonant format that, well, works. This skill has been honed over many years and helps explain why he’s a sought after screenwriter and movie producer (start the list with Elf, Resistance, and Meet Dave). His latest film is Sully, directed Clint Eastwood, starring Tom Hanks about Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, the “miracle on the Hudson” pilot. Another of his films it the post-production phase is The Madman and the Professor, starring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn, which Todd co-wrote. In this frank (and fun!) interview, you’ll find out what being an artist who is also Christian in Hollywood can mean, and learn some of the principal elements that go into a great story. Todd has also crafted a script about the making of It’s a Wonderful Life, centered on the long-suffering efforts of Philip Van Doren Stern to get someone to like his Christmas card letter – which a guy called Frank Capra did, to say the very least. You heard it here first, folks. Can’t wait. Grab some popcorn. Todd’s endlessly interesting, insightful, and has great taste in ties. On this date in 1946, “It’s a Wonderful Life” was released in the United States. Here are some things you may not have known about the classic Christmas movie. It’s based on a story called “The Greatest Gift” by Philip Van Doren Stern, who wrote it in 1939. After failing to sell the story, he made it into a Christmas card and send copies to friends and family in 1943. One of these cards came to the attention of a producer at RKO Pictures, which bought the story intending to make it into a movie starring Cary Grant. RKO shelved the project after three unsuccessful screenplay attempts were made. Director Frank Capra read the story and saw its potential. His production company bought the rights and the three screenplays for $10,000. Capra worked with a team of writers, including Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Jo Swerling and Dorothy Parker. The popular belief is that the role of George Bailey was all but written for Jimmy Stewart, however film historian Stephen Cox claims that Henry Fonda was also considered. The part of Mary was offered first to Jean Arthur, Olivia de Havilland and Ginger Rogers before it finally went to to Donna Reed. Vincent Price and Charles Bickford were considered for the part of the villainous Mr. Potter, who was eventually played by Lionel Barrymore. Filming took place largely at RKO’s studio in Culver City, California and the RKO movie ranch in Encino, California. The only filming locations that remain intact are the home that the Martini family buys in the film, and the gymnasium at Beverly Hills High School with its swimming pool under the gym floor. It’s widely believed that “It’s a Wonderful Life” was originally a box office flop and was dislike by critics. However, this isn’t entirely true. The film made $3.3 million dollars in 1947, placing it 26th among more than 400 films released late in 1946 and in 1947. The reviews were mixed, with Time magazine and Variety praising it, and the New York Times and New Yorker magazine panning it. It went on to be nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Capra and Best Actor for Stewart. It won an Oscar for technical achievement for a new method of simulating falling snow. It lost the Best Picture Oscar to “The Best Years of Our Lives.” The single event that made the film a Christmas classic didn’t happen until 24 years after it was released. In 1974, the company which owned the rights to the film didn’t properly renew the copyright. This allowed the film to be shown inexpensively on hundreds of local television stations. The film was believed to be in the public domain until 1993, when Republic Pictures proved that it still owned the film rights to the original short story, and because of that, to all derivative works, including “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The movie is now licensed to NBC, which shows it twice during the Christmas season, including on Christmas Eve. Our question: Which television villain was inspired by the character of Mr. Potter? Today is unofficially Cathode-Ray Tube Day, Games Day, and National Sangria Day. It’s the birthday of tire magnate Harvey Firestone, who was born in 1868; author Sandra Cisneros, who is 62; and actor Jonah Hill, who is 33. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1968, the top song in the U.S. was “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye. The No. 1 movie was “Oliver!,” while the novel “The Salzburg Connection” by Helen MacInnes topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.
