This month we're joined by the award-winning British-Canadian author, poet and essayist Naomi Foyle, to talk about Inish Carraig, the alien-invasion-cum-prison break thriller by our very own @Jo Zebedee.Among the topics we cover is the quintessential "Norn Irishness" of the book, conveyed without ever lapsing into cliché, but yet acknowledging the unique history and culture of the place in a subtle and different manner. We also talk about the physiology of alien species, robots, the gothic setting, and the different identities and representations the book plays with.Elsewhere we also discuss the possibilities and processes that enable writers to access Arts Council funding (England only) to further their writing careers. It's 1994 and writer-director John Sayles takes us to the magical isle of Roan Inish for a heartwarming tale of a post-war family in Ireland. Neither one of our gentlemen-philosophers knew of this film (although that does nothing to stop that accents), but were surprised to discover that it had more to offer than just a recipe for seaweed soup.

www.StoryLinkRadio.com Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry is a magical story interwoven with Scottish folklore. Rosalie K. Fry’s novel was the basis for the classic 1994 film "The Secret of Roan Inish". Fiona McConville is a child of the Western Isles whose family left the fishing life and their home on the small islet of Ron Mor for the Scottish mainland when Fiona was six. But city life doesn’t suit Fiona so at age ten she is sent back to her beloved isles to live with her grandparents. There she learns more about her mother’s strange ways with the seals and seabirds; she hears stories of the selkies, mythological creatures that are half seal and half human; and she wonders about her baby brother, Jamie, who disappeared during the island evacuation but whom fishermen claim to have seen. Fiona determines to find Jamie and strikes up a friendship with her older cousin Rory to enlist his help. When her grandparents are suddenly threatened with eviction, Fiona and Rory put their plans into action.

Pretty much to ruin, it was bought by the Keane family in 1997 and then began its transformation. As of now it comprises a series award winning houses or cottages and its 97 acres of gardens and woodlands have been designated as one of the 100 Best Gardens in Ireland (Liberties Press,2011). Today we chat the estate, the gardens, it and Tony's history. And also how one turns a little of the great outdoors into a place where you could literally stay forever. But according to some other traditions, Hefeydd was the first King of Dyfed. Gorsedd Arberth was his burial place and also the entrance to Annwn. Is this the enchanted castle we shall see in the third Branch? A hero called Hefeydd Hir is found in the 6th century epic poem Y Gododdin (composed by a Briton named Aneurin who lived in a land which is now part of Scotland). In the second Branch of the Mabinogion he appears as one of the Seven Knights, King Hefeydd of Dyfed who died in 892 etc. Hefeydd was a common name in Mediaeval Wales. Our ritual celebrates the turning of the year after harvest and honours the old gods, ancestors and spirits of the land as we move into the darker time – the time of the Crone.
