Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Necronomicon (1993), and Gods of the Deep (2023) While Stephen King may dominate when it comes to movie adaptations of his work—good or bad—one might expect that H.P. Lovecraft, given his immense impact on the literary world, would inspire just as many films. Yet, despite his influence, far fewer movies have been made from his stories than you'd think. Perhaps it's because Lovecraft's horror isn't about the details of what his characters see, but rather what those horrors do to them—often driving them into madness. And therein lies the beauty of his work. In this episode, we dive into three very different films, spanning three decades, each drawing from the strange and unsettling tales of this enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island. If you're not well-versed in Lovecraft's work, this is your chance to experience three adaptations—loose as they may be—that offer a glimpse into his nightmarish imagination. Films Mentioned in this Episode: Castle Freak (1995), Color Out of Space (2019), Creepshow (1982), The Crimson Blade (1963), Crying Freeman (1995), Demon Wind (1990), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), The Dunwich Horror (1970), The Evil Dead (1981), From Beyond (1986), Gamera, Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gods of the Deep (2023), Hatchet (2006), The Haunted Palace (1963), Humanoids from the Deep (1981), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Invisible Ray (1935), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Leprechaun (1993), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996), Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000), Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood (2003), Lovecraft Country (2020), Lurking Fear (1994), Necronomicon (1993), Re-Animator (1985), Return of the Living Dead III (1993), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), The Unnamable (1988), Vampyres (1974)

Welcome back to Part II of our conversation with Brant Hysell. Climber, olive mafia boss, and man behind The Gravity Lab YouTube channel. If you missed Part I, I highly recommend checking it out before continuing here.Today, it's story time with Brant as we dive into three of his most memorable climbs: Freestone, Lurking Fear, and his recent solo ascent of the Salathé. Most of us would spend months, if not years, meticulously planning and training for objectives like these. But for Brant, these climbs were more about stepping into the unknown and leaving room for the unexpected. To me, this reveals two important things about Brant. First, he's an incredibly strong climber with a solid foundation to fall back on. Second, Brant climbs for the adventure. For him, too much planning, research, and preparation take away from the magic that climbing offers. He'd rather pack the essentials, sans headlamps,  and figure the rest out in the moment. Brant's approach to climbing is raw and real—creating the chaotic, often messy adventures that truly shape a climber. His mindset challenges the belief that every climb needs to be meticulously planned and perfectly executed. This way of thinking doesn't just apply to climbing—it's a lesson in life.Embrace the chaos, trust in your abilities, and honor the legacies that inspire you. In doing so, you'll find that the most meaningful experiences are often the ones you least expect. Finally we close the conversation with the details surrounding Brants recent solo speed record of the Salathe Wall, a record that stood undefeated for 10 years! While Brant was only able to hold the title briefly…. before Alex Honnold came to the valley and stole the record a few weeks later, he reflects on the experience with humility and pride. . As he puts it; he is proud to have his name up next to one of the greatest climbers in the world…to have your record taken from someone like Alex…honestly feels pretty good”.----Don't forget to check out our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! WHAT'S ALL THIS THEN? JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, take a cinematic excursion through the history of one of the world's most notorious serial killers. Follow MONSTER PARTY down the fog-laden streets of Whitechapel London as we explore the terrifying case of... JACK THE RIPPER! Jack The Ripper was the name given by the media to a maniac who carried out a series of brutal murders of women in the Whitechapel district of London, from roughly 1888 to 1991. We say roughly because although there are five so-called "canonical" victims of The Ripper, he was suspected of committing even more of these heinous crimes. As the brutality of Jack's crimes increased, more pressure was placed on the police to capture him. But despite the efforts of law enforcement, Jack The Ripper was never caught. Over the years, Jack The Ripper has captured the imagination of the public, and many theories about his identity have been brought forth. And with this fascination, commercialization was bound to follow. Numerous books, plays, comic books, films, TV shows, musicals, pop music, video games, and even tourist attractions, have taken advantage of The Ripper's legacy. But what is it about the case of JACK THE RIPPER that has given it such world-wide popularity? Helping us answer this question is a returning guest, with an intellect as sharp as ole' Jack's blade. He's an award-winning author, film historian, screenwriter, director, columnist, DVD commentator, and actor, who we have the honor of calling our friend. And by sheer coincidence, he just happens to have penned the script for the upcoming FULL MOON FEATURES Jack The Ripper-inspired sci-fi film, QUADRANT! Please welcome back... C. COURTNEY JOYNER! In exclusive interviews, two legends from the world of rock climbing – Adam Ondra and Beth Rodden – share their passion for the sport.Adam Ondra, from the Czech Republic, is often described as the world's best climber. His list of hard ascents is staggering – including some 130 routes graded 9a or above. It was way back in 2012 that he climbed the world's first 9b+ in Flatanger, Norway. In 2016 at the age of 23 he repeated Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson's Dawn Wall in just eight days – it took them 19. He's a familiar face on the podium of the IFSC circuit and is currently preparing for Paris 2024 qualification.Beth Rodden is inextricably linked with some of the hardest climbs in Yosemite, having made a number of historic free ascents, including the first free ascent of Lurking Fear in 2001 and a free repeat of The Nose in 2005, set by her childhood hero, Lynn Hill. With Meltdown in 2008, she established the hardest first ascent of a single pitch ever done by a woman. Beth recently released her autobiography: A Light through the Cracks: A Climber's Story. In it, she doesn't hold back and details not just the climbing adventures, but the long-lasting trauma of a much-publicised kidnap ordeal in Kyrgyzstan, the breakdown of her relationship and climbing partnership with Tommy Caldwell, the inequality in female sponsorship and her battles with injury not to mention, herself. The UIAA thanks Mammut for their support in organising the interview with Adam Ondra. Puppet Masters / Castle Freaks

Another of Full Moon's HP Lovecraft adaptations, LURKING FEAR tends to get forgotten in the shadow of the Stuart Gordon trilogy, but this fun genre mash-up has a lot to like. With plenty of genre stars (including Vincent Schiavelli, Jon Finch, Ashley Laurence, and Jeffrey Combs), the story melds a hostage flick with supernatural horror as a skeleton crew of survivors hole up in a cemetery to fight a violent creature stalking the graves.  Hosted by Jarrod Hornbeck and Steve Guntli  Theme song by Kyle Hornbeck  Logo by Douglas McCambridge  Email: puppetmasterscastlefreaks@gmail.com  Instagram/Threads: @puppetmasters_castlefreaks YouTube: @PuppetMastersCastleFreaks Next week's episode: Demonic Toys

Relatos de Misterio y Suspense

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2023 80:40

For episode 41, we watched "THE LURKING FEAR," a weird and inept H.P. Lovecraft tale where Jeffrey Combs plays "Doc Haggis," an alcoholic doctor who teams up with a woman named Katherine... for some reason... to destroy one or more zombies, or monsters, or demons, or something. This one wasn't so hot, but it was such a confusing mess that it was almost entertaining as a result!Have you seen "The Lurking Fear?" What did you think? Let us know in the comments!

THE SKULL RETURNS! AND THIS TIME...IT'S PISSED! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, bring back another MONSTER PARTY tradition that's a virtual tribulation of trivia. Secure your nerves in their panic room, as we present... TOPIC FREE FOR ALL: THE ANNIHILATION!!! For those of you who have never experienced a TOPIC FREE FOR ALL, the format goes like this: 1) We stuff pieces of paper with topic ideas into a plastic skull bucket. 2) We each pull one of the pieces of paper out of the skull 3) We read out loud the topic that has be chosen. 4) We discuss and debate. 5) Drink and repeat! These topics would be better defined as "top-ettes"  Topics that may not be long enough for a full episode, but with enough meat on them for a short, fiery skull sesssion. So expect a catastrophic collection of categories, as we converse about films, TV shows, actors, monsters, animation, secret crushes, and more!  Joining us once again for more MONSTER PARTY merriment, is an immensly talented author, screenwriter, director, actor, film journalist, and long time friend of the show. And talk about a skull full of information! Please welcome back... C. COURTNEY JOYNER! (NEMO RISING, SHOTGUN, DOCTOR MORDRID, THE LURKING FEAR, PUPPET MASTER III: TOULON'S REVENGE, CLASS OF 1999) So we called this installment, THE ANNIHILATION, mainly because we wanted it to sound sexy, but also because we're annihilating your expectations! Didn't expect that, did you?

In Episode 4 of The Extreme Drummers Podcast I speak to Adrian Erlandsson of At The Gates, The Haunted, The Lurking Fear, Nemhain (Ex - Cradle Of Filth, Ex - Paradise Lost, Ex - Brujeria)Adrian needs no introduction. A legend in many senses of the word. I have been a huge fan of his since I started drumming and getting into metal as a teenager. His drumming has shaped so many legendary recordings and has influenced countless drummers through the decades with his musical, groove laden, hard hitting style. On top of being a legend and an incredible drummer he is a truly lovely dude. I've had the pleasure of meeting him a bunch of times but we have never really had the chance to geek out, so I thought this podcast was a great excuse to do that. In this episode we talk about a whole bunch of things. Stories from the old days, music tastes, practice, the state of the music industry now vs then and much more. Its a long but super interesting chat and I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording it.If you want to find out more about Adrian please check out the following:Instagram: @official_adrianerlandssonFacebook: /adrianerlandssondrummerYoutube: search "Adrian Erlandsson drum"Twitter: @adrianerlandsonIf you want to keep up to date with the Podcast please check out the website:www.extremedrummerspodcast.comOr follow on social media:Instagram: @extremedrummerspodcast / @danwildingdrumFacebook: /danwildingdrumYoutube: Search "extreme drummers podcast"Thanks for listening and see you next time!

At first we didn't think there'd be anything special about this adaptation of "The Lurking Fear" - perhaps due to the opening twincest and the Greek subtitles of the free YouTube version - but Hemoglobin (originally entitled Bleeders) is actually a pretty decent film and a pretty excellent adaptation. Who'd have thunk that this very Canadian production featuring an albino Brandon Lee lookalike, a half-interested Rutger Hauer, and a weirdly out of place and uncomfortably long sex scene would depict so effectively the tragedy of a protagonist coming to grips with the stain of his inescapable family destiny? Not us, eh. Click here to read the review from Moria referenced in the episode and stick around to the very end to hear about all the exciting things we've got in store for October and the upcoming Halloween season! Oh, and uh...please forgive the casual reference to "past" guest BJ Verot who will be joining us again on the next episode despite not actually having joined us yet. Did you hear Jay Baruchel made a horror film? If you're anything like Jim, then you only found out about Random Acts of Violence from Horror Twitter's outrage over his comments about the horror community that reeked of both moral superiority and hypocrisy. The boys spend some time discussing. Not interested in news related to the writer/director of Goon: Last of the Enforcers? Skip ahead about 30 minutes to get into the review of Lurking Fear, the directorial debut of C. Courtney Joyner produced by cut rate, shitty Roger Corman imitator, Charles Band. Delivering everything you'd expect from the producer behind the entire Evil Bong franchise, Lurking Fear is so badly made that it includes at least 3 entirely useless characters and so low budget that they apparently couldn't afford to properly choreograph a fight or ADR their main characters. We may be dealing with a film worse than Albert Pyun's Cool Air.
