Aldo Kane is a Royal Marine Commando sniper turned world-record-holding adventurer and survival expert. Having faced erupting volcanoes, charged black rhinos, and the isolation of a 10-day bunker lock-in, Aldo has spent his life testing the limits of human endurance. From rowing across the Atlantic Ocean to diving on Captain Kidd's pirate ship, his missions push the boundaries of courage, teamwork, and resilience. In his book Lessons from the Edge Aldo shares powerful lessons shaped by his time in the military and the world's most extreme environments. Aldo discussed how to build mental toughness, lead with purpose, and turn failure into fuel. With insights on flow, stoicism, and self-belief, Aldo's message is clear: success isn't about avoiding risk—it's about mastering your own mindset and becoming the captain of your own ship. His key lessons are: - The importance of resilience: Surviving and thriving depend on mental toughness and seeing setbacks as opportunities to learn - Developing mental fitness and compartmentalising emotions to focus on the task at hand in extreme environments - Harnessing flow states for peak performance under pressure - Valuing consistency over raw skill as the secret to long-lasting success - Applying stoicism—remaining calm, grounded, and pragmatic when faced with adversity - Learning that you must take action and “become the captain of your own ship” instead of waiting for things to happen - Embracing failure as a pathway rather than a permanent condition—failure is not the end - Leveraging self-belief and identity for sustained motivation in uncertain times - Building courage to tackle challenges previously avoided due to fear - Recognising that with the “right head game,” even the impossible can be made possible Hosted on Acast. Captain Kidd has captivated imaginations for over 300 years and inspired many stories about pirates, but was he really a criminal? Just how many ships did he plunder, how many men did he force to walk the plank, and how many throats did he slit? Or is the truth more inconvenient, that he was a buccaneer's worst nightmare, a revered pirate hunter turned fall guy for scheming politicians? In “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal” (2025) bestselling author Samuel Marquis delves into the legendary life of his own ninth-great-grandfather, Captain William Kidd (1654–1701), casting new light on one of history's most infamous figures. In this engaging conversation, David Bryan speaks with  Samuel Marquis, a hydrogeologist and author, about his latest book on Captain William Kidd, a notorious figure often mischaracterized as a pirate. Marquis discusses his journey in writing the biography, the complexities of Kidd's life as a privateer, and the blurred lines between piracy and privateering during the 17th century. The conversation delves into Kidd's expeditions, the role of the East India Company, and the mutiny that transformed him into a wanted man, as well as  the life and legacy of Captain Kidd, exploring his relationships, particularly with his wife Sarah Kidd, the myths surrounding buried treasure, and the complexities of his character as a pirate.samuelmarquisbooks.com. Facebook: @samuelmarquisbooks  Twitter (X): @Sammarquisbooks Instagram: @sammarquisbooks

Samuel—who happens to be Kidd's nine-time great-grandson—shares the real story of a man far more complex than legend suggests and who ultimately became a scapegoat for powerful political forces.Music: "With Loved Ones" Jay Man Photo(s): Courtesy of Samuel MarquisThank you for supporting Your History Your Story!YHYS Patreon: CLICK HERE YHYS PayPal: CLICK HEREYHYS: Stay in the know, join our mailing list: CLICK HERE YHYS: Website, Blog & Social: CLICK HERE#yhys #yourhistoryyourstory #history #storytelling #podcast #njpodcast #youhaveastorytoo #jamesgardner #historian #storyteller #blogger To purchase "Captain Kidd": CLICK HERE

Hanged for piracy and murder, sea captain William Kidd was executed in Wapping on 23rd May, 1701. From the gallows he proclaimed to the large assembled crowd that he was innocent of the crimes, as he was a licensed privateer.  The vessel he'd captured, the Quedagh Merchant, was indeed sailing under a ‘French pass' - though the documents that prove this lay unearthed until the 20th century. His trial was used by the governing Tory party as a political opportunity to embarrass his Whig sponsors, and he was convicted on all counts. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain what happened to his body after his botched hanging; reveal the extraordinary monetary value of his plunder; and explain how, despite his established prowess as a seaman, he became seen as a public enemy… Further Reading: • ‘Biography of Captain William Kidd, Scottish Pirate' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/captain-william-kidd-2136225 • ‘The sacrifice of Captain Kidd' (HistoryExtra, 2011): https://www.historyextra.com/period/stuart/the-sacrifice-of-captain-kidd/ • ‘Accidental Pirate' (National Geographic, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4aGvWzFoko Love the show? Lindsay is joined by author Samuel Marquis to discuss his book, “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal,” which will be released on May 13, 2025, by Diversion Books. Captain Kidd has captivated imaginations for over 300 years and inspired many stories about pirates, but was he a criminal? Just how many ships did he plunder, how many men did he force to walk the plank, and how many throats did he slit? Or is the truth more inconvenient, that he was a buccaneer's worst nightmare, a revered pirate hunter turned fall guy for scheming politicians?  In “Captain Kidd,” Marquis reveals the real story. Kidd was an English-American privateer and a leading New York husband and father, dubbed “trusty and well-beloved” by the King of England himself and described by historians as a “worthy, honest-hearted, steadfast, much-enduring sailor” who was the “victim of a deliberate travesty of justice.” With honors far more esteemed than the menacing Blackbeard or any other sea rover at the turn of the 17th century, how can Kidd be considered both a gentleman and pirate, both hero and villain? The ninth-great-grandson of legendary privateer Captain William Kidd, Samuel Marquis, M.S., P.G., is a professional hydrogeologist, expert witness, and bestselling, award-winning author of 12 American nonfiction-history, historical fiction, and suspense books, covering primarily the period from colonial America through WWII. His American history and historical fiction books have been #1 Denver Post and Amazon bestsellers, and have received multiple national book awards in both fiction and nonfiction categories, including the Kirkus Reviews and Foreword Reviews Book of the Year, American Book Fest and USA Best Book, Readers' Favorite, and the Colorado Book Awards. His historical titles have also garnered glowing reviews from #1 bestseller James Patterson, maritime historians, U.S. military veterans, Kirkus Reviews, and Foreword Reviews (5 Stars). His pirate book, “Blackbeard: The Birth of America,” has been an Amazon #1 Bestseller in U.S. Colonial Period History. The Marquis lives with his wife in Louisville, Colorado, where they raised their three children. Isle of Ever is Jen Calonita's newest middle grade novel, a story grounded in the history of Long Island's North Fork. On today's episode, Jen discusses growing up on Long Island and spending many summers at her grandparents' house in Mattituck. It was here, in between trips to Greenport, that she first heard tell of Captain Kidd's lost treasure. She tried digging up the local beach, came up empty, but the idea buried itself in Jen's mind. Now she has worked her experiences into the tale of Benny Benedict, a young girl caught up in a race to solve a puzzle and claim an inheritance. The plot and the clues to the mystery are tied up in Greenport's history. Jen walks us through the Greenport locales and local legends that made it into the book in one form or another. We also talk about her love of reading and of middle grade and young adult fiction. A masterful narrative history of the dangerous lives of pirates during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, revealing their unique impact on colonialism and empire. The pirates that exist in our imagination are not just any pirates. Violent sea-raiding has occurred in most parts of the world throughout history, but our popular stereotype of pirates has been defined by one historical moment: the period from the 1660s to the 1730s, the so-called "golden age of piracy." A groundbreaking history of pirates, Enemies of All: The Rise and Fall of the Golden Age of Piracy (Pegasus Books, 2024) combines narrative adventure with deeply researched analysis, engrossing readers in the rise of piracy in the later seventeenth century, the debates about piracy in contemporary law and popular media, as well as the imperial efforts to suppress piracy in the early eighteenth century. The Caribbean and American colonies of Britain, France, Spain, and the Netherlands—where piracy surged across these decades—are the main theater for Enemies of All, but this is a global story. Evoking London, Paris, and Amsterdam, Curaçao, Port Royal, Tortuga, and Charleston, the narrative takes readers, too, from Ireland and the Mediterranean to Madagascar and India, from the Arabian Gulf to the Pacific Ocean. Familiar characters like Drake, Morgan, Blackbeard, Bonny and Read, Henry Every, and Captain Kidd all feature here, but so too will the less well-known figures from the history of piracy, their crew-members, shipmates, and their confederates ashore; the men and women whose transatlantic lives were bound up with the rise and fall of piracy. Transforming how readers understand the history of pirates, Enemies of All presents not only the historical evidence but, more importantly, explains the consequences of piracy's unique influence on colonialism and European imperial ambitions. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Maritime plundering, or piracy, has happened in nearly all regions of the world, in most ages of human history. Yet the image that we have of "a pirate" in our collective imagination comes from one period in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. So "why has that one relatively short moment come to stand for all sea raiding across time and space?" That is the question with which Richard Blakemore begins his new book Enemies of All: The Rise and Fall of the Golden Age of Piracy.  To answer it he not only surveys decades of plundering and combat at sea and on land, but also interprets court cases, parliamentary legislation, imperial administration or the lack of it, and the slave trade. For the “golden age of piracy”, like a conspiracy theory of the Kennedy assassination, at times seems to be connected to pretty much everything else going on at the same time. Except that in the case of piracy from 1650 to 1722, it actually was. Richard Blakemore is Associate Professor of Social and Maritime History at the University of Reading. Enemies of All is his second book. For Further Investigation  We've talked about pirates of the "golden age" with Steve Hahn in Episode 87; and they came up again in, of all places, in the history told by trees in Episode 156 Probably the previous single best book about pirates in the "golden age", both factual and fictional, was David Cordingly, Under the Black Flag: The Romance and Reality of Life Among the Pirates (Random House, 1995) Marcus Rediker provides a view of pirates as proto-Bolsheviks in Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Villains of All Nations: Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age; Peter T. Leeson describes them as highly rational market actors in The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates And for more on one of the most curious episodes we talked about, see Robert C. Ritchie, Captain Kidd and the War against the Pirates–a great book There are a lot of bad editions of Charles Johnson, General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates, but this is the best one until we can convince Richard Blakemore to produce an edited and annotated version.

We're back with new episodes on New Year's Day, but, before we finally turn our backs on 2023 for good, here's Olly's choice for his favourite episode of the year - our story from 23rd May, the day in 1701 when sea captain William Kidd was executed for piracy and murder.  From the gallows, Kidd proclaimed to the large assembled crowd that he was innocent of the crimes, as he was a licensed privateer.  The vessel he'd captured, the Quedagh Merchant, was indeed sailing under a ‘French pass' – though the documents that prove this lay unearthed until the 20th century. His trial was used by the governing Tory party as a political opportunity to embarrass his Whig sponsors, and he was convicted on all counts. In this episode, The Retrospectors explain what happened to his body after his botched hanging; reveal the extraordinary monetary value of his plunder; and explain how, despite his established prowess as a seaman, he became seen as a public enemy… Further Reading: ‘Biography of Captain William Kidd, Scottish Pirate' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/captain-william-kidd-2136225 ‘The sacrifice of Captain Kidd' (HistoryExtra, 2011): https://www.historyextra.com/period/stuart/the-sacrifice-of-captain-kidd/ ‘Accidental Pirate' (National Geographic, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4aGvWzFoko Hosted on Acast. In the late 1700s, a young man discovered a mysterious depression on Nova Scotia’s Oak Island. Guessing that pirates—perhaps even Captain Kidd himself—had buried treasure there, he and a couple of companions started digging. They never found any treasure, but the rumor took on a life of its own. Over the centuries, others continued digging at the site—expending a great amount of time and expense. The hole is now more than 100 feet (30 meters) deep. Such obsessions betray the emptiness in the human heart. A story in the Bible shows how one man’s behavior revealed just such a void in his heart. Gehazi had long been a reliable servant of the great prophet Elisha. But when Elisha declined the lavish gifts of a military commander whom God had healed of leprosy, Gehazi concocted a story to get some of the loot (2 Kings 5:22). When Gehazi returned home, he lied to the prophet (v. 25). But Elisha knew. He asked him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you?” (v. 26). In the end, Gehazi got what he wanted, but lost what was important (v. 27). Jesus taught us not to pursue this world’s treasures and to instead “store up . . . treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20). Beware of any shortcuts to your heart’s desires. Following Jesus is the way to fill the emptiness with something real.

May 23rd: William Kidd Hanged (1701) Some stories are more gruesome than others. Some are more fantastical and, though it contains murder, the rest of the details become far more interesting than the crime itself. On May 23rd 1701 a man was hanged for his crimes. Though he did end a man's life, it was actually his crimes as a pirate, the stuff of fairytales, that ended up leading him straight to the gallows.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kidd, https://www.britannica.com/biography/William-Kidd, https://www.historytoday.com/archive/months-past/execution-captain-kidd., https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/captain-kidd-walks-the-plank, https://www.americanantiquarian.org/thomasballads/items/show/97
