This week the guys talk about the latest episode of The Boys. Catch up on The Acolyte. Then they review CHEW Vol. 3: Just Deserts by John Layman & Rob Guillory and talk about current comics.
Episode 294. We chow down on the first two volumes of Chew, the 2009 comic from John Layman and Rob Guillory. Whenever Tony Chu eats something, he gets a psychic impression of its history. He can see where produce was grown or how meat was slaughtered, or if he bites a dead body, he can see that person's last moments. He uses this power as an agent for the FDA, solving bizarre food-related crimes in a world where where chicken has been outlawed and is now treated as an illicit substance. We discuss the nonstop antics, scribbled-in background jokes, the narrative's slow release of info on the deadly bird flu that led to the chicken ban, and character designs modeled after actors from Lost.(00:00) - Intro (00:04) - Welcome and banter (01:20) - Non-spoiler thoughts on Chew vol. 1-2 (10:37) - Housekeeping (14:50) - Spoilers!! This week we review the newest comic, Mosely, from one of our favorite creators Rob Guillory. In the hyper-technological world of the later 21st century, Mosely is a bitter old janitor on a mission from a higher power—to unleash holy Hell upon the “too big to fail” Tech Gods. Can one man bring down the corporate powers who've used their vast influence to oppress an all too complacent human race (and hopefully win back the favor of his estranged family while he's at it)? Mosely's taking up the Holy Hammer and you better believe he's gonna smash some $h!t until he sets mankind free! To quote Mark Ronson and featuring Bruno Mars, "Julio, get the stretch, Ride to Harlem, Hollywood, Jackson, Mississippi." Not sure if the Atch-Attack had a stretch limo for the visit, but he did stop in at Offbeat. On this episode, like Johnny and June, the Roadshow is going to Jackson. Jackson, MS, that is, and unlike Johnny and June, the fire has not gone out...in fact, this comic shop has the Roadshow all fired up! This episode's featured shop is OffBeat, one of the most unique and inspiring comic shops Mike has been to. The founder and owner is Phillip Rollins AKA DJ Young Venom, who describes OffBeat as an “Alternative Culture Store” and a refuge. It is Mississippi's only Black-owned record and comic book store and also serves as “an art gallery for young minority artists and a venue for up and coming musicians, comedians, and poets of all ages. In short, a space for people to be themselves.” Listen to Mike's interview with Phillip, and then join Mike and a very special co-host, Peter Rios from the Daily Rios, as they review Eisner Award-winning Rob Guillory's excellent first volume of Farmhand. Next time you are “going to Jackson”, you really must experience OffBeat...it has Mike's highest recommendations! A big thanks to Phillip Rollins for giving the Roadshow the chance to hear your great story! Be sure to visit or contact OffBeat at 109 North State St., Jackson, Mississippi 39201, (601) 376-9404, and veryoffbeat@gmail.com. Check out OffBeat online at: https://www.offbeatjxn.com/ and follow on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Objxn. Follow Peter on his podcast adventures at https://thedailyrios.com/. You'll find his shows on Apple, Stitcher and other podcast clients. Follow him on Twitter @peterjrios and on Instagram @thedailyrios. You can also contact him by email at peter@thedailyrios.com. Many thanks to Peter for joining me and reviewing Farmhand by Rob Guillory!

I talked to comedian Kris Cox (Check out his podcast Everything and Nothing) about Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory. Hosted, recorded, edited, and produced by Gene Deweber. Theme by Lydia Manning
So this one was pretty neat. We've been big fans of Rob Guillory for some time now beginning with his work on the critically acclaimed Image book CHEW and continuing to his latest project Farmhand (also from Image). You probably don't need us to tell you how good Rob is seeing as there's a couple of Eisners, a Harvey Award, and the 2013 "Jayare's End of the Year Award" for best artist to do the talking for us. (That last one is especially important.) He's arguably the most decorated guest we've had on the show and despite all that, he was just as willing to talk about paper stock and wrestling as he was his award winning comics. So yeah, this one was pretty neat. Farmhand is back with issue 16 this coming Spring leaving plenty of time for catching up or re-reads. Be sure to check out Rob's for art and merch and follow him on for updates on comics, conventions, and just rad art in general. Enjoy! -Jr.

Justin connects with Pete and Mitch from Imagining Games to talk all about their latest creation, the Chew role playing game! Chew is an award winning comic book written by John Laymen and drawn by Rob Guillory. It's absurd, it's dramatic, it's grim. As Pete puts it, it's The Wire meets The Boys at the bottom of a bucket of chicken. As fans of the comics Pete and Mitch now have the opportunity to bring this game to your gaming table. They share all about what this world is, if you're unfamiliar, as well as why they chose to make their game a "Forged in the Dark" game, and what to expect should you invite your friends over for dinner and find yourself running a game of Chew. Michael and Derek are back at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find, in Charlotte, NC, for the first of their planned August on-location episodes. And as the Two Guys have been doing with their new format, Michael highlights recent mainstream publications and Derek focuses on more indie or non-DC and Marvel titles. Michael starts the ball rolling by discussing the recent work of Ta-Nehisi Coates, specifically his current writing on Captain America (Marvel Comics). He specifically focuses on the politics embedded in the narratives -- and not only with Cap, but in his Black Pantherwork, as well -- and how Coates is learning the form and growing as a comic-book writer. Derek discusses three recent #1 issues, including Rob Guillory's Farmhand and John Layman and Nick Pitarra's Leviathan(both from Image Comics), as well as She Could Fly, written by Christopher Cantrell and with art by Martin Morazzo (Dark Horse Comics). He links the comedy, and the outrageousness, of Guillory's and Layman's new titles, because the two made their big splash with Chew. The guys also talk about She Could Fly, not only on its own story terms, but as the latest contribution from Berger Books.
The podcast returns from holiday/health hiatus for a look at the year in comics for 2016. We're joined in separate segments by (01:33) Joe Sposto (@joesposto) from Longbox Heroes, (40:22) magazine contributor Matt D and (1:11:20) Al Kennedy (@housetoastonish) from House To Astonish. There's chat about DC Rebirth, Civil War 2, the Inhumans' failed babyface push and other news from the past year. Then, it's lots of recommendations about what our favorite books and creators were from the past year. There are so many quality books now, things are bound to be forgotten, so apologies to those we should have mentioned during the show and did not. We still love your work, even if our collective memories are like a new kind of Swiss cheese, Some of the books we did remember to mention include: The Vision by Tom King, Gabriel H Walta and Jordie Bellaire, Batman by King and multiple artists, Detective Comics by James Tynion IV and multiple artists, Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott and Liam Sharp, Moon Knight by Jeff Lemire and multiple artists, The Fix by Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber, Future Quest by Jeff Parker, Doc Shaner, Steve Rude and other artists, the Batman 66 books by multiple creators, Kaijumax by Zander Cannon, The Black Monday Murders by Jonathan Hickman and Tomm Coker, Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, Giant Days by John Allison and multiple artists, Limbo by Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard, Another Castle by Andrew Wheeler and Paulina Ganucheau and plenty of other great books that you should check out to see if they are for you. We also said goodbye to two amazing books this year that ended after 50 and 60 issues: The Sixth Gun by Collen Bunn and Brian Hurtt and Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory, respectively. Also, a shout-out to some great collections that came out this year: The return of Blue Monday by Chynna Clugston-Flores, IDW's Artist Edition for the DC War books (featuring Kirby, Kubert, Kahinger and people whose last name didn't start with K) and the Master of Kung Fu omnibuses, books I never thought I would ever see collected. There's some brief chat throughout the podcast about non-comics stuff, because we just can't stick to one topic for a whole show. We talk Marvel Puzzle Quest with Joe (our alliance leader), NXT wrestling with Matt and Chikara with Al

We had to dig in the crates for this Chew Interview Episode featuring the creators of Chew, John & Rob. This comes from New York Comic Con 2013 and I would say it's our best interview yet, at least out of the ones you've gotten to hear. *Insert evil laugh*. Anyway if you've listened to any of our previous episodes you've probably heard me ranting and raving about Chew in the past and if you haven't this interview with the creators will give you a lot of insight into one of the craziest books out right now. I mean that in the best way possible as Chew is one of those books that you can easily explain the premise but that doesn't even begin to let someone understand the greatness that lies within. If you're already listening to the episode then you also heard our promo for our Laffster episode which happens on OCTOBER 28TH AT 8:30 PM EST RIGHT HERE. Tune in and watch as the Fanbros make complete fools of themselves live on Internet TV. Not only that but you can register and win some pretty cool prizes that you can't get anywhere else. Make sure you click and find out for yourself about the first of many live events we will be hosting. With that lets get right to the Chew Interview that hopefully you've already pressed play on.
