I noodle about a mash-up of B/X with combat inspired by Chris McDowall's game Into the Odd. Will two great flavors create a new taste sensation ala Reese's, or would it be like topping your Count Chocula with sauerkraut?
12th Episodes! And today we have a very special guest, a game designer that has been influential to my work and to so many other game designers I admire as well, Chris McDowell! Chris is a TTRPG designer in Manchester UK, known for Into the Odd, Electric Bastionland, and the upcoming Mythic Bastionland. He makes rules-light flavour-heavy games and writes at bastionland.com. I had the pleasure and honor to meet Chris at Gen Con 2023. We talked a little bit, I gave him some of my games, and it was certainly one of the highlights of the convention for me. It's hard to know what to say about Chris McDowall's work. He creates ver well thought out and crafted games that are very simple to use, but that have so much depth both in terms of setting and mechanics to explore. His work, as he says himself, has influence from miniature games and boardgames and reminds me some of my favorite of those games. Those that have very simple and minimal mechanics but that offer so much possibility and space for exploration for them. This lets everyone play the game, but offer those interested in it a lot of room for mastery. He is also very generous with the knowledge he accumulated making games and studying them. Not only his games have an unique way to teach of how to play them better and to make the best use of its possibilities, he also maintains a gaming blog where he talks about theory, design, playtesting, and anything gaming related that is really a treasure trove of knowledge. And if that was not enough, Chris is constantly helping out and uplifting other creators, talking about their work in his channels, making the gaming engines he creates available for other to work with for FREE mind you, and a lot more. Anyway, in this chat we got to talk about what is weird, how we find it in the absence of things, how we can explore this "void" in the game design we make. We talked about art, artists, game design and game designers, how non-combat encounters are so interesting, his different creative approaches, what we value and what has a real impact in our lives, our problems with anxiety, and all sorts of weird thing in between. Oh, and we obviously talked quite a bit about his upcoming Mythic Bastionland RPG, which will bring mythology to Bastionland in a total unique way! So listen up, and let's get weird with Chris McDowell! Check out Chris McDowall's Work! www.bastionland.com https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bastionland/mythic-bastionland-rpg-before-into-the-odd Thank you for listening! I was leafing through the latest edition of Miniature Wargames magazine when I came across an advert for a new game called The Doomed, scheduled for release in early August 2023 by Osprey Publishing. The Doomed immediately jumped out to me, and I wanted to learn more. It looks like another exciting miniature agnostic title to add to my collection. I tracked down author Chris McDowall (Into the Odd, Electric Bastionland), and he was kind enough to spend some time with me talking about the game, as well as his hobby history. Oh, and we also briefly touched upon reading toothpaste ingredients whilst sitting on the toilet in the mid-90s. Halcyon days...

Welcome to a new episode of The Last Standee Podcast! Other podcasts would have celebrated episode 50, but we aren't other podcast, no sir! After the usual Standee catch-up, Audrey talks at length about Erune, a low-complexity dungeon crawler with a choice-based narrative. After that, it's time for a bad transition and David's turn(DAVID! How's this as a plot twist?) to tell us about Into the Odd, a Dickensian RPG remaster by Old School Renaissance guru Chris McDowall! To finish up the episode, Alexis wraps up his experience with Tainted Grail Expansions, in preparation for the just-started sequel crowdfunding campaign!

Show Notes To tide us over til our next one-shot, here's a bonus episode where our host and GM Fiona interviews game designers https://twitter.com/bastionland (Chris McDowall) and https://twitter.com/JohanNohr (Johan Nohr) about the upcoming remastered release of ‘https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/into-the-odd/ (Into The Odd)', a rules-light, flavour-heavy roleplaying game of industrial horror and cosmic strangeness. Bastion is the only city that matters. In its industrial age, it sits as the smoke-shrouded hub of mankind, surrounded by a world of lurking horrors and cosmic interference. The Underground spreads beneath the people's feet and the stars loom above. In ‘https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/into-the-odd/ (Into The Odd)', players take on the roles of explorers braving places too far for maps and too old for records. Their expeditions touch the bizarre, the wondrous, and the horrific. Explorers search for riches, but also Arcana, mysterious devices with unnatural powers. This remastered version revisits Industrial Bastionland, giving the original ‘https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/into-the-odd/ (Into the Odd)' a lavish hardback, full-colour restoration with expanded content. You can find out more about ‘https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/into-the-odd/ (Into the Odd)' and preorder your own copy from https://freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/into-the-odd/ (Free League Publishing). This week Hunter and I read through and review Into the Odd Remastered, the rules-light, flavour-heavy roleplaying game of industrial horror and cosmic strangeness, by Chris McDowall. (Intro and Kickstart the Podcast until 42:30)
Many residencies offer artists and writers a comfortable house for a few months to relax in and concentrate on completing a project. You need to be a bit more intrepid to apply for the Auckland Regional Parks Artist in Residence where you're going to be spending a lot of time in the wilderness, night and day, Titirangi poet Elizabeth Welsh has recently wrapped up her residency at Awhitu Regional Park. Lynn Freeman talks with Elizabeth, and with last year's artist in residence Chris McDowall. Chris is an award-winning cartographer who roamed and mapped the Glenfern Sanctuary at Aotea Great Barrier Island.
We were joined by Yochai Gal, the creator of Cairn, an adventure game about exploring a dark and mysterious Wood filled with strange folk, hidden treasure, and unspeakable monstrosities. Character generation is quick and random, classless, and relies on fictional advancement rather than through XP or level mechanics. It is based on Knave by Ben Milton and Into The Odd by Chris McDowall. The interview covers Yochai's journey ranging from the random discovery of Palladium Fantasy, to PBtA, and finally landing the Old School Revolution (OSR). Yochai went on with others to define new variations of OSR's approach as the New School Revolution (NSR) which has grown into an active and thriving game design community. Short discussion of "labels" and how to bridge "narrative" and "OSR" games... which is really to say that it may be better to try lots of different games, regardless of "labels," to figure out what things you like that can make your favorite game even better. We talk to Tabletop Gaming's accidental chess expert, Matthew Vernall about Chess, chess variants, and games that are a bit like chess. Join us for our first external in-person podcast since the before times and experience the slight echo of Chris' dining room. Today we talk to Chris McDowall about his, somewhat odd, roleplaying – Electric Bastionland, and his process for making (and breaking) games. Chris has a unique approach to game making which uses the idea of removing things from systems until you have something new as a starting point. Chris McDowall is the creator of the RPGS Into the Odd and Electric Bastionland. Both games share a fascinating weird industrial early XXth century setting and have been extremely influential to the indie RPG scene for the way they handle game mechanics. As a matter of fact, if you've listened to previous episodes of this podcast you might have heard other designers mention Chris' games a few times. In this episode we talk about Fear, a strange fascination with the London Underground Railway, a rural English county nobody knows about, one hundred failed careers, miniature wargames, and Intergalactic Bastionland. In this episode of the Dieku Podcast we discuss design trends in the RPG industry, and in particular the OSR, where much of the innovation is taking place. Reviewing a recent episode of the Questing Beast, we dive into the idea of having unique voices within the industry that is a breath of fresh air compared to the corporate produced games of WOTC's Dungeons and Dragons. We then cover where this time sits within the evolution of the RPG world, and question whether we are just in a repeat of the cycle where hand-waving OD&D gave way to more rules, and inevitably story games. Will history repeat itself, or are we on a new tangent? They discuss solo roleplaying and Ray Otus' Oracle gaming tool (link below), Barney's Amberwood borough in Bastion (see Electric Bastionland rules p.326-8), Mausritter (which utilises the ItO rules) (link below) and, last but not least, they roll up a pair of Rook Tamers (Emmy Allen's special failed career. In this Halloween Special the staff of Plaid Hat Games. They just published a new board game for the spooky season called Abomination. Abomination is a competitive tabletop game of strategic monster building for 2-4 players designed by Dan Blanchette. It’s inspired by Mary Shelley's classic novel of gothic horror. A game where players are gonna be doing some pretty grizzly stuff like stealing organs and making decisions about the value of human life. This adventure was inspired by the themes and ideas of that game, but it’s not at all the same thing. Dan wasn’t able to join us, but I did tap him for some mad-libs style proper noun generation. Thanks dan. I decided to run the game using Chris McDowall’s 2015 RPG system Into the Odd. An ultra light system about player agency and getting to the point as quickly as possible. I’m gonna go ahead and spoil that I love this system for adventure games. If you are new to the show you should be aware that it’s not for kids. It features adult language and situations. It’s also a show about people playing games. This isn’t a radio play or an audio book. You have been warned. Talk about a return to Into the Odd by Chris McDowall and some of my house rules for it.
Let's chat magic in games! What are our favourite spells? Should magic be chaotic? Or should it be arranged in an orderly tome? Alice likes the competing forces of technology and magic in Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, while Matthew tells us about a Japanese import of Ni No Kuni on Nintendo DS which came with a real spellbook. But we’ve been playing stuff too. Alice has been shouting at gravity in anti-platformer Youropa, and Matthew has been trying to cope with the size of Egypt in Assassin’s Creed Origins. A special thanks to Chris McDowall for the theme suggestion. May your life be full of good magic and only a moderate amount of chaotic magic. When we play combat scenarios in our game, the scenes often fall on a spectrum. On one side, we have the sporty style of play, where encounters are balanced and the PC's can think on their feet and improvise. On the other side, we have a more war-minded approach, in which victory is earned by meticulous planning and through unflinching, ruthless tactics. Today, Eamon and Arthur discuss some of the ways this spectrum appears in Dungeon World, and the simple ways to embrace both ends. If you want to hear a bit more about combat as sport vs war, check out the excellent video from Web DM linked below! Relevant links: Combat as War or Sport? In our last game of this Into the Odd series, we run the Electric Bastionland playtest rules and explore a Bastionized version of Jason Sholtis' "Operation Unfathomable"! Jen returns as Yonarla Cavendish and Beth returns as Jonita (aka, Blast). Cat plays Victoria Burnaby, the bad ass socialite, and Vince gives us not one but three urchins (Jack, John, and Jonathan) with their dog Calpurnia. Things go reasonably well, but still somehow end badly, with everyone still in debt.
