Two siblings and their guide set out to cross the Titan mountains to reach a new promised land. Session Zero returns as we journey into the Dark Forest of Davokar and are introduced to the world of Symbaroum. “Twilight Falls, Davokar Darkens” Symbaroum is a game that has been on my short list since I came into contact with it at GenCon 2019. I had seen it being offered by Free League and new that it had origins originally as a game only available in Swedish but I foolishly set it aside at the time as yet-another-sword-and-sorcery-rpg. Then I got to meet Mattias Johnsson Haake, who I got to finally interview last month, and through him learned all about the long journey that Symbaroum and Mattias have taken together. I also looked a little closer at the game itself and what I found was an evocative world with incredibly immersive artwork, a long thought out and lived in history, and game mechanics that didn’t get in the way of it’s rich story about corruption, power, and nature. Three Corrupted Explorers To help guide us into Symbaroum we used their recently released Starter Kit to help describe the setting and then quickly opened up the main core book to create our own characters. Character creation was simple, for the most part, and all three of the characters presented in this Session Zero would make for a terrific long form campaign. This trio was hard to leave behind and I hope this isn’t the last time we visit this setting with them. You’ll meet Sean’s Farsig Unthist, a goblin with a thirst for magic, Velvet’s Gerundin, an elven changeling challenging their destiny, and Justin’s Daramei, a human noble who will compromise everything to gain the power he thinks he deserves. Together they’re all playing with the fires of corruption in their own way as they set foot into the Dark Forest, will they be able to save themselves or will they each drag the other into the darkness with them? Today in a special feature of Meet The Makers, Justin connects with Mattias Johnsson Haake, the the project manager, editor, and co-writer behind the critically acclaimed Symbaroum. We talk about this intriguing setting where nature fights back and the lines of good and evil are blurred into shades of grey. We also talk about the strange and wonderful journey that brought Mattias and his creation from a defunct publishing company to merging with Free League Games. Running The Marathon When Mattias founded the Swedish game studio Järnringen in the early 2000’s I don’t think he could ever have expected the journey he and his company would take. They were behind the first iterations of what would one day become Mutant: Year Zero and the creators of Coriolis, but when the company was closed they had to liquidate their properties and sell them off. Coriolis would be sold to a videogame developer who would later license it to Tomas Härenstam at then new and upstart publishing company called Fria Ligan. Fria Ligan, or Free League Games as we know them know, would go on to release Mutant: Year Zero and create the Year Zero engine which would power Forbidden Lands, Tales from the Loop, and Alien The RPG. Meanwhile, after years of being on the outside of the tabletop industry Mattias and two of his business partners made a plan to create a new game, in a new setting, that would launch them back into tabletop and if they were successful the plan was always to merge with Fria Ligan and combine their forces. That new game would become Symbaroum. Teaming with the talented artistry of Martin Grip (Coriolis, The One Ring Second Edition) and rules designed by Mattias Lilja, the three of them created a game that captured the attention of anyone fortunate enough to pick up the book. Merging Järnringen and Fria Ligan into Free League Games would also have another fortunate outcome. The property of Coriolis, once liquidated when Järnringen was shut down, had been purchased by Fria Ligan which meant that after the merger Mattias was once again the owner of one of the first games he had created. Honestly, I can’t wait for the documentary! Game of Thrones Meets Princess Mononoke But what about the game? Mattias describes Symbaroum as a dark and deadly fantasy world where nature fights back and factions vie for control. Themes of colonialism and environmentalism are paramount and while you can certainly play Symbaroum like a traditional hack and slasher the hope is that players will be asked to pause and reflect on their actions. Who are the bad guys in this story? Is a good vs evil binary even appropriate when the invaders are also refugees? The game mechanics have crunch if you want crunch but have also been compared to more story focused playstyles like Power by the Apocalypse games, you won’t get bogged down in hours of combat rolls but be tasked with finding the answers to the mysteries of the world around you. With the rules facing the players, not the GM, the onus is on them to explore the world around and discover the hidden truths of the Forest of Davokar. Getting Started Free League Games has just launched the Starter Set for Symbaroum which will set you and your table up with all you need to do to become explorers and treasure hunters on the edge of the Forest of Davokar. While the full scope of the game’s setting can be found in the core rulebook, Mattias is quick to point out that the Starter Kit is designed to be more than just a sample adventure or a demo. It comes equipped with tables and rules to help you generate your own campaigns using only the Starter Kit, and while the rules are more streamlined for ease of play it will give you more than enough to play with to decide if you want to take a deeper dive into the wilder Symbaroum setting. And what about that wider setting? Mattias is currently working on book 5 of 6 of an ongoing chronicle beginning with The Throne of Thorns: Thistle Hold and he promises that as you progress through these stories that answers to his mysteries will be revealed as well as answers to questions you didn’t even know you had! This edition was collected on November 20th, 2020. Paradox brings Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game development back in-house, the company announced Thursday. This comes after Paradox yanked the product line from the then White Wolf company after many Alt-Right and LGBTQ+ worries arose from the 2018 Vampire 5th ed release. Paradox admitted to having little or no oversight of Whitewolf and gave the product line to Modiphius to develop. In the last two years Modiphius only released one product, Fall of London, in that time which tried to change game mechanics and mythology. So Paradox is now managing Vampire the Masquerade in house under the World of Darkness brand.  Chaosium is releasing the Alone Against The Tide PDF just in time for Thanksgiving for even more solo horror adventures. The PDF is less than $7. There's not just one but TWO Symbaroum Bundles of Holding. Symbaroum is Free League's dark fantasy setting, and the bundles are for sourcebooks for the SYMBAROUM dark-fantasy tabletop roleplaying game, as well as all the Symbaroum Settings a GM needs for adventure in the primeval forest of Davokar.  Mike Diamond and the Old Ways Podcast are going to the Orient, specifically the Horror on the Orient Express. You can get it on DriveThru for $5. It looks like Wizards of the Coast is being sued again this time by Gale Force 9 for failing to approve products already agreed to be released. This is basically the same case as the Dragonlance suit from a few months ago.  Bayt-al-Azif #3 is out! It's got a number of new scenarios, including 1920s, modern and 1960s; an interview with the Great Old One Sandy Petersen himself; as well as an article by friend of the show Dean Engelhardt. At 124 pages for $8 on DTRPG, it's well worth the purchase price. In the first of an infrequent series, the Midnight Express Podcast delves into other RPGs, movies, and popular media that can inspire your oWoD games, or provide some variety at your table.  In the inaugural episode, the Swedish dark fantasy game 'Symbaroum' comes under the spotlight; BK and Wendell brave the horrors of old Symbar, stride into the darkness of Davokar and unearth the roots of the game.  They explore various aspects of the game from character creation, to game mechanics, and the importance of mood, theme, and story. There has been a breach of one of the ancient taboos. Uldo, a young goblin from the barbarian village of Lobaram, has in an attempt to prove himself worthy decided to guide a group of Ambrian explorers into one of the ancient ruins in the forest of Davokar.  Knowing that these ruins are grounds tabooed by the Huldra, his older brother, Uhuglas, who has been honored with title of the chieftain's personal guard, is very ashamed of his brother's actions. He, along with the village witch, Algaya, has decided to take things into their own hands in order to try and stop Uldo… before it's too late.  Together with Algaya's fierce animal familiar, the boar Mortia, they have travelled for a few days in to the depths of the forest. However, there has been no sign of the rascal Uldo and the Ambrian company. Now Uhuglas, Algaya and Mortia are standing at the outskirts of the ruins, the ancient grounds where no one from the tribes have set foot, with the risk of suffering heavy corruption from whatever dark force might be lurking in there.
