Artist and legendary street artist Robbie Conal talks about: His family history, including his two activist-and-politically inclined parents, his background in fighting the power; moving up to Los Osos (in San Luis Obispo County) as a permanent residence (back after the 2008 crash), but keeping a small place in L.A.; what he misses about not being in the city (he's lived in NYC and SF as well as L.A.); his first big moment with public art, through postering, which was born out of caricature paintings he was making of Ronald Reagan's cabinet, which he dubbed 'Men with No Lips,' and alighted through a large postering campaign just as Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, was opening to the public in 1986; how he's Shepard Fairey's OG, and how he was an influence on him as a future street artist (though Fairey said, "I can do that" quite confidently); his personal mantra:  "apply what you do best to what you care about most," which in his case his drawing and talking smack (does best) and American democracy (cares about most); how, to make his work quicker to keep his work temporal, he switched from oil painting to charcoal and then to acrylic with oil accents; how all his friends who have his art (mostly of terrible characters) have them in their toilets; and his most popular work, "Watching, Waiting and Dreaming," a triptych of Gandhi, the Dahli Lama and Martin Luther King. This podcast relies on listener support; please consider becoming a Patreon supporter of the podcast, for as little as $1/month, here: https://www.patreon.com/theconversationpod In the 2nd half of the conversation, available to Patreon supporters, we talk about: How he's sustained himself financially over the decades outside of sales of his work, from teaching to receiving donations to his postering campaigns to lots of (young) volunteers; what he thinks about street art, and mural art, today, and the distinction between graffiti, street art and poster art, and how his reputation saved him from competing street artists when he was postering; our different respective takes on street art, and how Leon Trotsky taught him that everything is political, and street art is inherently political; what he's learned from terrible jobs: mainly, you can't make good art, let alone great art, in your spare time, while holding down a full-time job (and doing the work on the side); the most commonly asked questions he's received about postering (how many times have you been arrested?); how part of your mission as a poster is muscling up for the consequences; and what the best thing is to say to the judge when you're asked why you did it. And for the final 15 minutes of our talk, he covers the breadth of logistics related to putting up posters in public/on the street, which he refers to as 'acts of civil disobedience.'

When Conal Doyle started his plaintiff's practice, he faced long odds and daunting obstacles.  But as one born without one of his legs who went on to become a ski racer, long odds and obstacles were nothing new to Conal.  Join Ben and Rahul for their discussion with Conal about how he bet on himself and his clients time and again, achieved monumental verdicts and changes to the legal system on his way to becoming one of California's most successful trial lawyers.     About Conal Doylehttps://conaldoylelaw.com/ Conal Doyle is an award-winning trial lawyer who has received national recognition for his courtroom victories that have had broad reaching impact on society. He is one of the few attorneys in history to argue before the United States Supreme Court and obtain multiple seven and eight figure jury verdicts. His international human rights victory in Castaneda v. United States was a catalyst for the reform of the United States immigration healthcare system, and garnered widespread acclaim from his peers, legal publications and the international media. For example, he received the 2012 California Lawyer of the Year (CLAY) Award in Human Rights, and the 2011 Trial Lawyer of the Year Award from the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA). He has been listed in both Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers for the past ten consecutive years, and his courtroom victories have been chronicled in newspapers around the world, including a piece on the CBS news magazine “60 Minutes.”Conal's reputation as one of the finest trial attorneys in America was further cemented with two stunning back-to-back verdicts in Kern County, California, one of California's most “conservative” jurisdictions. In December 2013, Conal obtained as lead trial counsel a $26.8 million medical malpractice jury verdict in McKnight v. Spain. This result was the largest medical malpractice verdict in County history and was recognized by The Daily Journal as a Top 10 Verdict in California for 2013. The National Law Journal recognized the verdict as a Top 100 Verdict nationally and the Consumer Attorneys Association of California (CAOC) named him a Finalist for the 2014 Consumer Attorney of the Year Award. The highest pre-trial offer by the defense was $300,000.In March 2014, Conal obtained as lead trial counsel a $3.8 million jury verdict in Doe v. Jack In The Box. In this premises liability case, the highest pre-trial offer was $200,000.The foundation of this success is a passion for justice and a commitment to client service. Conal was born without his right leg, and like many of his clients, has overcome great obstacles and endured daily struggles. These experiences provide him a unique insight into his clients' challenges and help him guide his clients through difficult times.Conal's personal experience has led him to focus on the representation of amputees in both first party bad faith and personal injury claims.  The Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC) honored Conal as the 2020 Street Fighter of the Year for his work on behalf of amputees in Trujillo v. United Healthcare, a national ERISA health insurance class action.  The case required the nation's largest health insurer to change its claims practices and reprocess claims related to the denial of prosthetic devices to amputees.  Conal is also prosecuting two other class actions for wrongful denial of prosthetics-against Anthem and Blue Shield of California, among numerous individual bad faith claims for wrongful denial of prosthetics.Conal is well known as an advocate for amputees in injury and bad faith insurance claims. His article, “Glimpsing the Future for an Amputee,” is used as a guide for litigating limb loss cases by attorneys across the country.Conal has never backed down from a challenge or started a fight that he couldn't finish. When he isn't challenging corporate giants in the courtroom, Conal enjoys skiing the Rockies, a remnant from his past as an alpine ski racer. Honors & Awards2020 Consumer Attorneys Association of California (CAOC) Street Fighter of the Year Award2014 Finalist-Consumer Attorney of the Year-Consumer Attorneys Association of California (CAOC)The National Law Journal Top 100 Verdicts, 2013The Daily Journal Top 10 Verdicts, 20132012 California Lawyer Attorney of the Year (CLAY) Award2011 Trial Lawyer of the Year-Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA)2011 Attorney of the Year-The RecorderThe Best Lawyers in America, 2012 – PresentFinalist-2011 CAOC Consumer Attorney of the Year2011 Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in AmericaThe National Trial Lawyers Association Top 100, 2008 – PresentThe Daily Journal – Top 20 Under 40 in California, 2010Super Lawyers-Southern California Superlawyer, 2012 – PresentThe Daily Journal – Top 10 Verdicts, 2010Martindale Hubbell – AV Rating, 2007 – PresentSan Francisco Trial Lawyers Association – 2011 Civil Justice AwardThe National Law Journal-Appellate Lawyer of the Week, 20102011 Public Justice Achievement Award-Public Justice Foundation Public ServiceConal devotes a significant portion of his practice to public interest work and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Public Justice Foundation, a non-profit public interest law firm. Ours to Protect is a unique and exciting audio project – a collaboration of local and regional broadcasters from across the country who have come together to tackle climate change, champion climate action, and inform and educate audiences all over Ireland about how they can make a difference. Today on ‘Ours To Protect' John Morley talks to Conall O'Cuinn about the EU Citizens Panel on Energy Efficiency which he was randomly selected to take part in. == Did you know… Conaill Ó Cuinn, a Galway man, was randomly selected to be part of the EU Citizens Panel on Energy Efficiency days after purchasing an electric car. The European Citizens' Panel on Energy Efficiency took place over three weekends between February and April 2024. The European Citizens' Panel on Energy Efficiency has now submitted its recommendations to the European Commission. Why is it important for the EU to have a Citizens' Panel on Energy Efficiency? The panel brings together a diverse group of citizens from across the member states. This allows the EU to gather public perspectives and lived experiences on energy efficiency. Citizens with no prior experience in policy creation can bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. They might propose approaches that policymakers wouldn't have considered otherwise. By involving citizens in the discussion, the EU can build trust and public ownership of energy efficiency goals. When people feel they've had a say in shaping policies, they're more likely to support and comply with them. What can I do to support the EU Citizens' Panel on Energy Efficiency? The European Commission website allows you to contact them directly [Europa.eu website]. You can express your support for citizen engagement in policymaking and encourage them to continue initiatives like the Citizens' Panel. There are many ways to save energy at home and in your daily activities. Research energy-saving tips and implement them in your own life. Look for NGOs and advocacy groups working on energy efficiency issues in the EU. Here's a few websites if you want to know more! Bringing a child into the world is often described as one of life's most beautiful and transformative experiences. However, for some new mothers, this journey can be clouded by a silent intruder that lurks in the shadows of their minds – Perinatal Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). As the world celebrates the arrival of a precious bundle of joy, these mothers find themselves battling intrusive, distressing thoughts and compulsive behaviors that threaten to shatter the blissful facade of motherhood. In today's episode of The OCD Whisperer Podcast, we are delighted to have Conal Harpur. Conal is a psychotherapist specializing in anxiety disorders and OCD during the perinatal period. During our conversation with Conal, we discussed perinatal OCD symptoms, including intrusive thoughts related to the baby's well-being. Conal explains the thought process and distress experienced by individuals with OCD and emphasizes the importance of finding a therapist who understands OCD and the transition into parenthood. We also discuss different therapeutic approaches for OCD and the correlation between stressors and OCD symptoms. We conclude our conversation by touching on public vs. private practice and the importance of individual readiness for transformative growth.   In This Episode [01:22] What is Perinatal OCD how is it different from OCD? [01:55] Symptoms of Perinatal OCD [05:25] Emotional avoidance in OCD [07:28] Understanding and managing OCD with a focus on specific obsessional topics. [08:03] The unpredictability of OCD and the importance of finding a therapist [09:03] CBT and medication as treatment options. [09:56] Analytic psychotherapy and understanding the sense of self. [14:04] The psychological and therapeutic perspective on perfectionism and its connection to OCD. [18:17] The correlation between stress and OCD symptoms [18:39] The overlap between OCD and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder [22:27] The importance of understanding childhood experiences in OCD treatment [25:50] The core emphasis of public practice: Symptom reduction and stress management. [26:49] The transformative journey vs. disorder treatment [27:37] The importance of being in the right emotional space and readiness for therapy,   Notable Quotes [04:36] “ If I have an intrusive image about me approaching my baby or walking down the stairs and dropping my baby on the stairs is a very common one, I might be more inclined to not engage with my baby for fear that I may act on it.”- Conal [14:09] “An individual may develop kind of perfectionistic traits as a defense mechanism in psychoanalytic terms against the kind of reoccurring unacceptable impulses or thoughts they may have growing up.” - Conal [22:28] “Whenever there's a massive rise in responsibility, there's going to be a massive rise in intrusive images, and that's going to fuel the OCD.”- Conal   Our Guest Conal Harpur, a seasoned mental health professional currently completing his doctorate in psychotherapy, specializes in anxiety disorders and OCD, particularly during the perinatal period. He manages the CBT department at a Dublin maternity hospital and runs a private practice for moderate to severe mental health issues, passionately improving lives through psychotherapy.   Resources & Links Kristina Orlova, LMFT https://www.instagram.com/ocdwhisperer/ https://www.youtube.com/c/OCDWhispererChannel https://www.korresults.com/ https://www.onlineocdacademy.com Conal Harpur https://ie.linkedin.com/in/conal-jacob-harpur-4902a3200 https://www.cbtsolutions.ie/ https://www.instagram.com/cognitive_conal/   **Disclaimer** Please note, while our host is a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in OCD and anxiety disorders in the state of California, this podcast is for educational purposes only and should not be considered a substitute for therapy.   Stay tuned for bi-weekly episodes filled with valuable insights and tips for managing OCD and anxiety. We taped this episode live at Hot Pod Summit. That's our conference for the podcast industry. We have a whole newsletter for podcasters. It's called Hot Pod, written by our very own Ariel Shapiro. Hot Pod Summit is where we bring that community—of creators, trendsetters and decision makers—together to explore the latest developments in podcasting, audiobooks and more. It was a packed house and a great time. We ended the day by recording our first ever live Decoder with Conal Byrne, CEO of iHeartMedia's digital audio group. Conal oversees podcasting at a giant radio company, and his group accounts for a quarter of iHeart's revenue, which was a billion dollars last quarter alone. His team makes some of the biggest podcasts around with huge talent like Will Ferrell, Shonda Rhimes, and Charlamagne Tha God who you'll hear Conal talk about quite a lot. Conal and iHeart digital earned that success by doing some unconventional things. Whereas other big podcasting players like Spotify and Apple have tried to boost revenue through subscriptions or platform exclusivity, Conal shunned those approaches and said he's going for big audience reach, made possible in part by his ability to run ads and even shows on iHeart's huge network of traditional radio stations. But, that maverick approach has included some controversial steps as well. Last year, Verge alumni and Bloomberg reporter Ashley Carman reported that iHeart worked with a firm called Jun Group to essentially buy podcast downloads through video games. To many in the industry, that seemed pretty disingenuous. So of course I asked Connell about that and lots more. He was a great guest, super game to answer the questions, especially in front of a live audience. Grandma we love you. And we really do. Pack your pyjamas in a bag, you're staying at your nanna's tonight. Grandmas are an amazing, often patronised group that pass on their invaluable wisdom for no fee other than a wrinkly kiss upon parting. Without grandmas we wouldn't be, and we're eternally grateful for that. Ignore the weird political beliefs and quaint insistance on things being done in a very particular way and you've got yourself the best people going. Coincidentally, Conal and Joe have EXACTLY the same grandparents. Facilitated by NCG Managing Partner Brian Nolan, and Conal Mulreany, Field Supervisor at Nolan Painting & Field Consultant at NCG, this workshop is designed to provide Production Management leaders with the critical awareness of each leg of the Operational Stool: Employee Management, Customer Management & Job Management. This particular excerpt begins with an element that impacts the culture of the field environment - values. Do your employees understand the values of your company - are they living those values in the workplace? The discussion also taps into the power of emotional intelligence. As a leader and manager of people, how do you respond to situations - both positive and negative? Are you aware of the impact your words have? To quote Benjamin Franklin, "Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place at the right time but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at a tempting moment." Brian and Conal are passionate about this topic, and no matter what industry you are in, this discussion will impact your leadership.
