Every week, Lindsay Monroe checks in with her stepbrother about her walk across the United States.
In this, the second half of the show, Lindsay tells stories from the trip, talks about what she learned, and answers some questions from the audience.
The first half of the Lindsay Walks live show, in which we mostly talked about what it's been like readjusting to her old life in Massachusetts.
Since the last time we talked, Lindsay battled flat tires and wet electronics to complete 365 days on the road in Richmond, Virginia! She was evicted from a church, welcomed into a gun club, goes on a morning TV show, does some biking with my dad, almost photographs a wedding in her pajama pants, and finally is reunited with her boyfriend Tim and one of her dogs, the half-pug half-chihuahua Cody. This will be the last Lindsay Walks for a while, I think, but stay subscribed for details about a live recording we hope to do in Worcester, MA in about a month and a half or so!
In this episode, Lindsay talks about becoming facebook friends with C. Thomas Howell (aka Tommy), battling large hills and flat batteries, dealing with a car-sick dog, and visiting Babyland, where Cabbage Patch kids are born. She's almost back to her starting place in South Carolina, though she's got a fair amount of biking still to do after that.
This week, Lindsay and Jake discuss run-ins they had with drivers, and Lindsay is appalled at Jake's uncultured upbringing when it comes to Ernest movies.
This week, Lindsay reflects on the events in Las Vegas (where she used to live), talks about meeting up with her mother and going to a wedding, meets up with some friends she made on the trip west, and she and Cynthiana the dog get used to traveling by bike. Also, Jake gets to give his bleeper a nice little workout!
This week, Lindsay talks to Jake (and sometimes various small children and dogs) about a fellow cross-country traveler she met, the wildfires that are threatening so much of the west coast currently, religion, and other things she encountered while voyaging in her mighty Toyota Yaris rental.
This week, Lindsay starts retracing her path, except in reverse order and much faster. She empties out her cart, considers the pros and cons of traveling by car, and tries to keep Cynthiana the dog from taking on driving duties. She also visits Astoria, where a lot of the movie the Goonies was filmed. She also joins the '3200 club' and contemplates the community of cross-country walkers.
This week, Lindsay jumped into the Pacific Ocean! Whoooo! Â And then she took some photos of the total eclipse. Â It's been an eventful week! You can see the video of Lindsay's final walk to the sea at https://www.facebook.com/monroelindsay/videos/vb.1307612308/10200475601555055 and some of the photos she took of the eclipse at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200484977189440 . The podcast is going to continue, as Lindsay heads back to Oklahoma, then bikes to the Atlantic from there. If you've encountered Lindsay on her journey, or have been inspired by her, or have gone on a similar trip, then we'd love to hear from you, and Jake would love to record a conversation with you for the podcast! You can reach Jake at jake at jwgh.org.
This week, we encounter some unfriendly dogs, and Lindsay stops by the Not So Boring Bar & Grill (in Boring, Oregon), meets a friend from kindergarten, and contemplates the end of her walk -- and the upcoming eclipse.
This week, Lindsay goes on a road trip with a friend, sees the hotel from the Shining, and jumps off of a cliff.
This week, Lindsay is calling from a fan of the podcast's place. Hi, Heather! Also this week, Lindsay encounters a couple of plainclothes police officers, has a close encounter with eels, demonstrates different types of car horn use, and ascends Mount Hood, while Cynthiana the dog hurts her ankle (she's OK now).
This week, we recorded on one of Lindsay's rest days, following a week in which she was mistaken (?) for a hippie, was given an unexpected tour of fossil country, battled a steep mountain, and put some money on Surfing at the Bar, Vernon the Cat, and Impulsive Kate. The question of what Hogwarts house a dog might belong to is also addressed. We talked a bit about the Spoke'n Hostel in Mitchell, Oregon, which Lindsay recommends checking out and supporting if you find yourself in the area! https://www.spokenhostel.org/ This episode includes an audio clip from a Vox story about the 2016 standoff between the Bureau of Land Management and some Oregon ranchers.
This week, Lindsay channels Crocodile Dundee, is almost conquered by a hill, battles and/or welcomes bad cellphone service, and gets some well-deserved rest. In this episode, there's some audio from a facebook video that Lindsay made. The original video is online at https://www.facebook.com/monroelindsay/videos/10200375284007179/
y the time you read this, Lindsay may already be in Oregon, the final state of her journey! This week, Lindsay finds a friend's hat, gets a permanent reminder of her trip, goes to the movies, and hears some very interesting stories from Captain Harry of the Deadliest Catch. One place Lindsay went to eat this week was Even Stevens, a chain of sandwich shops in Idaho, Arizona, and Utah that donates food to local non-profits. See if there's one near you! http://evenstevens.com/ http://dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/

The whistle pig sounds in this episode were taken from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCibiJrk4_Q
In this bonus episode, I talk to Barbara Lee, who encountered Lindsay, Logan, and Cynthiana on a campground in Escalante, Utah last month. If you think that America's national monuments are as important as Barbara and Lindsay do, then please consider taking action to protect them. You can use this form to send a message to the Secretary of the Interior about it! https://nextgenclimate.org/act-now/act-now-protect-national-monuments/
This week, Lindsay encounters friendly towns and less friendly towns, goes kayaking in the rain, and gets a little rest and relaxation in some hot springs, while Cynthiana the dog takes an unexpected swim. Lindsay's cell phone reception was kind of rough on this one -- sorry! Look for a bonus episode in a few days, in which a special guest describes meeting Lindsay and Logan in Escalante, Utah last month.

In this short episode, Lindsay and Logan rent a car so they can quickly visit a bunch of national parks and monuments, Cynthiana the dog gets to spend some quality time at a gas station, and Lindsay falls into a ravine. (She got better.) If you think that America's national monuments are as important as Lindsay does, then please consider taking action to protect them. If you might be able to help with that, please get in touch with Lindsay on facebook! You can find her at https://www.facebook.com/monroelindsay .
This week, Lindsay and Logan continue walking through Arizona, and they address an important question: What's the biggest threat on a cross-country walk: mountain lions, human beings, or rotisserie chicken? We mention a couple of facebook videos in this episode. One's a little music video: https://www.facebook.com/loganmayberry69/videos/vb.675061793/10154592482656794/ and the other is a video that Logan made before he met up with Lindsay, one evening when a wild animal was prowling outside his tent: https://www.facebook.com/loganmayberry69/videos/vb.675061793/10154492713696794/

We also address a question about hats, and give some advice about dealing with customer service folks.
This week, Lindsay checks in from Amarillo, Texas, where she is preparing to forge on to Albuquerque, New Mexico, about 300 miles away. It might take a little while to walk there. Since the last time we talked, she's gotten tips on stealth camping from another long-distance walker, experimented with Facebook Live, and visited a Cadillac graveyard. We talked about those and other adventures, and we also discovered that we have remarkably similar advice to give to people contemplating entering a food-eating contest or engaging of street harassment of women: Don't. Not mentioned on the podcast: Lindsay's hometown newspaper, the Landmark, recently ran a story about her, which you can read at http://www.thelandmark.com/articles/one-foot-in-front-of-the-other/ .

She also met and walked with another cross-country hiker -- Donald Akins, an ex-Marine who is carrying a large cross to the west coast. In this episode, she talks about that, the further adventures of Cynthiana the dog, and the unexpected link between hikers and truckers, among other things. She also addresses a frequently asked question: How many pairs of shoes has she gone through?
This week, Lindsay makes it to Elk City, Oklahoma, despite a broken-down car, a close encounter with the sidewalk, the temptations of a local dive bar, and a sometimes smelly canine companion. This week, Lindsay found herself in a scary situation, then crossed into a new time zone, met a handcycler of note, had a party thrown for her, and encountered some snow.
