I had never done a ten-year vertical wine-tasting and didn't know what to expect. A vertical tasting is done with the same wine variety from the same winery and maybe even from the same vineyards, but for different years. However, if you get the chance, take it. I was very impressed. You can taste how the wine changes over time, and with information regarding the growing conditions for each year, you can also taste how the weather affects the wine.Stone Hill Winery in Hermann, Missouri, is one of the best in the state. Norton is the Missouri State Grape. Norton is also called Cynthiana which is the State Grape in Arkansas.Because of its acid and tannins, Norton wine can age well. It is known for its flavors of plum, tart cherries, blackberries, and earthiness and spice.Tonight, we talk about the Ten-Year Norton Vertical Wine Tasting that we did at Stone Hill Winery. Next week we are hunting for a great Trader Joe's wine. We will try to describe the three wines we taste and help you decide which wine you need to try next. We will be tasting: 2023 Emma Reichart Dry Riesling, purchased for $5.99. Aromas of apricot and grapefruit. It is crisp and dry with notes of mineral, almonds, and herbs. This wine comes from Germany. 11.5% alcohol. 2022 Roustabout Meritage from Paso Robles. Trader Joe's had this wine for $7.99. Meritage is a Bordeaux Red Blend made up of 44% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The bottle says silky tannins. Notes of black cherries, blueberries, and cigar box. Some hints of dark chocolate and expresso. 13.6% alcohol.2022 Epicuro Nero D'Avola from Sicilia DOC. Purchased for $5.99. Aromas of blackberry, black currant, forest floor, and pepper. RWS gives it a 7.0 rating and recommends BUY.
This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Intro Hello, this is your host, Archer72, for Hacker Public Radio. In this episode, this is my third show involving my record player. I am using a Zoom H1essential Stereo Handy Recorder microphone, recording into Audacity for this show. Why visit the record shop? Picking up a record at the record shop expands my music choices. I get a chance to talk to the owner on the weekend when searching for new music. He is an archaeologist and a teacher at a local college during the week, and is knowledgeable on all the music in the store. One Year With the Institute - Archive.org I wanted a way to listen to the records while on my laptop, preferably with headphones, as to not disturb the household. How is this accomplished? This is done using a combination of Darkice to capture the stream, and Icecast to stream it to the local network. What is Icecast? Icecast is a streaming media (audio/video) server which currently supports Ogg (Vorbis and Theora), Opus, WebM and MP3 streams. It can be used to create an Internet radio station or a privately running jukebox and many things in between. It is very versatile in that new formats can be added relatively easily and supports open standards for communication and interaction. Icecast is distributed under the GNU GPL, version 2. Here is Part 2 of my in-depth interview with Lucie Morton where we continue to discuss the differences between Norton and Cynthiana grapes. We also cover her attempt to reclaim another Virginia native grape, Cunningham which one of her familial ancestors is connected to here in Virginia. Finally, Lucie will describe her proverbial Ah Ha moment when she decided that she would produce her upcoming documentary film titled "Odessey of Forbidden wines, exile and return of American grapes." This interview is packed with many more insightful comments and history from Lucie and is a fitting last episode in my All About Virginia Norton podcast series. Take a listen or read the transcript below. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. For more information go to www.finewineconfidential.com
Lucie Morton is the World's most preeminent Ampelographer, if not the only one still living that practices this art in the wine industry. I know, you are asking yourself what is Ampelography? Well, Lucie will explain that in some detail in this episode. In fact, this interview was filled with so many insights that I have chosen to break it up into 2 parts. In Part 1 we touch on many areas of winegrowing with a focus on American Heritage grapes and their demise and rediscovering. One of which, the Cunningham Grape, another Virginia native grape Lucie is in the process of recovering, it is going through the quarantine requirements, and her nephew plans to plant it on their original family farm on the banks of the Potomac River in King George County, Virginia.Lucie is also in the process of producing a film called the Odessey of Forbidden Wines, Exile and return of American grapes. We will discuss that in detail in Part 2. I could go on about Lucie's many accomplishments, but I will let the Episode speak to it instead. Enjoy the listening. You will be as fascinated as I am every time I engage Lucie in a discussion about winegrowing. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. Tom Payette is one of the veterans making wine here in Virginia. The upcoming 2025 harvest will mark Tom's 40th. While most of Tom's career has been in Virginia he has been involved some years ago on the west coast in California as a result of his position at Prince Michel. The then owner Jean Leducq owned a vineyard on Elhers Lane in Napa Valley.Tom has been recognized by numerous wine publications for his work including being named in 1999 as Winemaker of the Year by Vineyard & Winery management and more recently he was named by Wine Business Monthly as one of their Wine Industry Leader of the Year Awards.Tom has a very active Wine management and consulting business currently and New Kent Vineyards is one of his long-time clients who produces Norton. Tom brought with him the day of the interview two bottles of wine. Once of which was from their Norton vineyard block and the other was from what Lucie Morton the world renown Ampelographer visited and said was from Cynthiana which is not Norton despite the fact that it is legal to label it as Norton. Lucie joined us after the interview concluded and we tasted the wines. There is no question they were different. More on that in a later Episode when I interview Lucie.Take a listen to Episode posted here or read the transcript. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. Tonight, we will learn about and taste two wines, made from grape varieties unfamiliar to many of us. First, we will taste a Vignoles (white) and then have a Norton (red). Both wines come from small AVA's in east central Missouri, along the Missouri River. The first wine we are tasting is a Vignoles from the first AVA in the US. It comes from the Augusta AVA. Vignoles is a hybrid grape originated in France from a cross of Seibel and Pinot de Corton. It was imported to the US and the Finger Lakes Wine Growers Association named it Vignoles in 1970. However, it has since been DNA tested and found to have very little if any genetic markers in common with Seibel or Pinot Noir. Therefore, its parentage is in question. Vignoles is the most common white wine grape grown in Missouri but is also grown in other states including New York. The wines can be sweet, semi-sweet, or dry. Vignoles is also used for dessert wines or ice wines. Wines are medium in body and crisp; with flavors of tropical fruits, citrus, and floral. Our second wine is a Norton from another small AVA in east central Missouri. The Hermann AVA is located along the Missouri River. German settlers came to the area in the 1830s, finding it similar to the Rhine River region of Germany. They immediately started growing grapes. Norton is the official state grape of Missouri and the number-one-grown grape in the state. Dr. Daniel Norborne Norton developed the variety in Richmond, Virginia in the early 1800's. It produces a dry red wine with complex flavors.A Stone Hill Norton was named the “Best Red Wine of all Nations” in 1873 at the Vienna World Exposition. Norton wine is a full-bodied, dry, red wine. Aromas of red and black fruits, coffee, chocolate, flowers, cloves, and leather. Tastes of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, vanilla, and spice. It also has a rich mouthfeel, smooth finish, and oak notes. It is also known as Cynthiana. It is very age-worthy. High-quality Norton wines reach their peak around 8 years of age and remain that way for another 8 years.Tonight, we taste:Balducci Vineyards – 2021 Vignoles purchased at the winery for $30.00. Tastes of pineapple, apricots, peaches, lemon, orange. Vignoles pairs well with salty foods, Brie cheese, spiced pecans, candied walnuts, Asian chicken, spicy pork ribs, seafood green or yellow curry, spicy peppers, spicy barbecue, chutney, and apricot. 2020 J Cross Norton from Stone Hill Winery of Hermann, Missouri. Purchased at Vineyard for $40.00. Aromas of ripe plum, blackberries, tart cherries, moist soil. Taste of plum, blackberry, leather, oak, chocolate, tobacco, and licorice. Pairs with steak, red meats, game meats. This wine can replace Cabernet Sauvignon.Next week We have an election show special and we will taste some Rioja: 2017 Marques de Caceres, Rioja. Purchased from Costco for $17.99.2022 Vina Torcida Tempranillo, Rioja. Purchased at Wine Styles for $20.00.2018 Trader Joe's, Rioja. Purchased from Trader Joe's for $9.99.
Burnley Vineyard was first planted in 1977 making them one of the early winegrowing pioneers during the formative years when Virginia wine was just beginning to re-emerge after a long slumber from the years of Prohibition and its repeal. C. J. Reeder, Lee Reeder's father purchased the land in 1977 and Gabriele Rausse who had just begun to plant Barboursville Vineyard down the road from this property entire into a handshake deal with C. J. The arrangement was Burnley would buy Barboursville vines, (they had begun a nursery at that time) and Barboursville would buy their grapes. Ultimately that would lead to Burnley Vineyards producing its first Estate Wines in 1984 with Lee Reeder fresh out of VA Tech as the winemaker. Lee has been the winemaker ever since.I believe you will find this interview refreshing by the openness and honesty that Lee Reeder shows throughout our discussion. One of the fascinating facets of this interview is how Lee and Burnley Vineyard helped contribute to the trail about whether Cynthiana is a different grape than Norton or the same. I believe through, mostly my tasting experiences over the past several years that it is the former.Take a listen and decide for yourself. Thanks for being a listener to the Fine Wine Confidential Podcast. For more information go to www.finewineconfidential.com
Father and son actors, Lawrence & David Pressman talk about their journeys to becoming actors, what it's like to grow up in Kentucky vs Los Angeles, knowing acting was your calling from a young age, the problem with drinking, acting out when you are young, having your dad bribe you to quit showbiz, and getting blown up in Independence Day and getting yelled at by Elia Kazan. Bio: Lawrence Pressman was born in 1939 in Cynthiana, Kentucky. A graduate of Northwestern University, he has appeared in over 150 roles on the screen and stage. Including, “Shaft” “9 To 5” “American Pie” “The West Wing” and “Doogie Howser MD” where he played the series regular role of Dr. Benjamin Canfield. He is still unclear who Jay Kogen is.David Pressman was born in New York City and was promptly whisked away to Sherman Oaks, California where he grew up. He has appeared in a bunch of film and tv (ok fine, not as much as his dad) including “Independence Day” “Zoolander” “Tropic Thunder” “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and the recurring role of Mr. Rusnak on the television series “Newhart”. His voice can currently be heard on episodes of Fox television's animated show, “Krapopolis”. David loves his dad.
This is a fascinating interview because Anna Want, the General Manager and daughter of the founders openly embraces the idea that Casanel has both Norton and Cynthiana vines planted in their vineyard. There is beginning to be a more robust open debate about whether the Cynthiana grape vine is Norton under a different name, or a completely different species of grape vine. I personally, lean toward it is a different species based on the many bottles of Norton I have tasted and enjoyed that have Cynthiana vines listed as the varietal from the nursery they purchased these vines from.Casanel also is unique in Virginia as they are the only winery I know of who has planted the Carmenere grape and successfully produced a high-quality wine from it here in Virginia. The back story as to why the founders Nelson & Casey DeSouza purchase the land that their vineyard was planted on in Northern Loudon County in 2008 is yet another example of the pioneering spirit behind many Virginia wineries. It is a testament to the hard work and determination of one family to make a success out of a Farm Winery. Originally from Cynthiana, Kentucky, Wylie Caudill has emerged as a distinguished artist, rooted in the verdant landscape of Lexington. He is presently this year's official artist for the prestigious 150th Kentucky Derby.Wylie's artistic narrative is woven with a distinctive imprint—a signature style he affectionately terms as "organic repetition." This unique aesthetic can be easily recognized throughout his portfolio. His work can be seen not just in Kentucky but across the United States, vitalizing urban landscapes with murals that echo his artistic ethos.Wylie's artistic journey began when he was quite young. Pokemon, trains, and dragons served as his inspiration and ignited his imagination. However, it was while at college that Wylie found his artistic niche using chalk to draw on the streets and sidewalks of his campus, that earned him the nickname 'the chalk guy'. Murals were a natural transition from there.Today, Wylie's artistic creativity transcends the confines of concrete walls to work on canvases, bourbon bottles, apparel, and beyond. He likes to think his journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his art.

Episode No. 5 of the Art Throb Podcast features Kris Grenier who will talk about the 7500+ miles of hiking trails she has walked and how she has captured some of these awesome landscapes into needled-felted artwork scenes. As a backpacker and ultramarathoner, Kris Grenier explores the world on foot. Her travels have taken her from the hills of Georgia to the peaks of New England and from Death Valley to Mount Whitney, the top of the contiguous United States. After returning home to her family's small farm in Harrison County, Grenier records her memories in two-dimensional wool feltings to share with others the wild places she loves. Grenier has enjoyed the opportunity to exhibit her art and passion for public lands at regional art shows, where her award-winning work has been praised for its originality and authenticity. Collectors appreciate the expressive realism of Grenier's art and note that it has a soft, familiar feeling, like a treasured memory. Having earned her BA in Environmental Studies from Transylvania University and conducted ecological research in both Lexington, Kentucky, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Grenier considers her role as an artist to go beyond the visual interpretation of wild lands. In galleries and festivals, Grenier enjoys sharing stories of the landscapes depicted in her work and aspires to kindle a conservation ethos in viewers. Her focus has turned to large-scale pieces that allow viewers to imagine themselves in the backcountry and evoke the grandeur of expansive natural landscapes. A juried artist in the Kentucky Crafted Program, Grenier was recently awarded a 2022 Emerging Artist Grant by the Kentucky Arts Council. Grenier's first large-scale solo exhibition, 7500+ Miles, debuted at Boyd's Station Gallery in Cynthiana earlier this year.https://wanderstruckstudio.com/
If finding common ground sounds like an ambitious prospect in these profoundly polarized times, that's because, quite frankly, it is. But with his extraordinary new album, The United State, Wells has managed to transcend politics and race and religion and tap into something far deeper, something infinitely more primal and timeless. Recorded with acclaimed producer Duane Lundy (Ringo Starr, Sturgill Simpson's Sunday Valley, Joe Pug), the collection explores our innate humanity and everything that comes with it: the joy, the sorrow, the ecstasy, the pain, the hope, the fear. Wells' songs speak to the universal truths that bind us, empathetically leaping between perspectives as they reckon with personal growth and existential quandaries. The arrangements here are rich and ethereal to match, balancing lush sonic landscapes with stark acoustic meditations. The result is a subtly revelatory record, a gripping, cinematic album full of small moments and sharp insights that add up to nothing short of life itself. “Ultimately, this album's about unity,” says Wells. “It's about the common thread that connects us all.” After spending his childhood in Blanchard, LA, Wells moved with his family to Cynthiana, Kentucky as a youngster. Growing up in the rural South, he rebelled against the commercial country music that surrounded him, instead preferring the trippy psychedelia of Pink Floyd and the brash energy of Guns N' Roses. After an aimless couple of years trying to put a band together in rural Kentucky, he moved to Lexington, and immediately launched the cult favorite Southern rock band Fifth on the Floor. The group released a couple of well-received independent records before teaming up with Shooter Jennings on their breakout third album, 2013's Ashes & Angels, which debuted on the Billboard Country charts. While the record earned raves and helped land the band dates with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Blackberry Smoke, it would prove to be the group's last, and following a pair of hometown farewell shows, the four-piece split for good. “When that band broke up, it kicked me in the teeth. We'd spent years clawing upward, and suddenly there was no wind, no sails,” says Wells. “That had been my dream since I was a teenager, and all of my eggs were in that basket. There was no backup plan.” With the rug suddenly pulled out from under him, Wells found himself in freefall. Rather than succumb to the disappointment, though, he decided to write his way through the heartache, emerging stronger and more creatively invigorated on the other side with his solo debut, Dawn in the Distance. The record (and its subsequent touring) prompted the best reviews of Wells' career, with Rolling Stone hailing his “gift for melody” and Saving Country Music praising his “stunning insight and honesty.” The album reached #3 on Amazon's Alt-Country/Americana chart, and songs from the collection racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone. When it came time to work on a follow-up, Wells decided to flip his entire writing process on its head. Instead of penning whatever music just happened to come to mind, he crafted an entire architecture and sequence for the record in advance, following it like a road map as he wrote about what it meant to be human, to be caring, to love yourself and your fellow man, flaws and all. “Tribalism is the name of the game at this point,” says Wells. “‘Divided' is a cliche. But if you zoom out, we all bleed the same, we all laugh the same, we all cry the same. There's this common path that all of our lives follow: birth, being a dumbass kid, thinking you're falling in love, actually falling in love, starting a family. Worrying about paying the bills, death, whatever comes next. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Welcome to Cynthiana, Kentucky! The town was founded 1793 on land owned by Robert Harrison along the banks of the South Licking River. The town's name is a combination of the name's of Harrison's two daughters, Cynthia and Anna. In 1854 the Covington and Lexington Railroad reached town proving greater access to Covington and Cincinnati and promised growth and greater opportunity. Unfortunately most of the downtown was burned 10 years later during the Civil War when a Confederate General set fire to a stable in an attempt to dislodge Union troops. The town rebounded and found success in the early 1900's in whiskey and tobacco. There where more than 30 distilleries producing bourbon whiskey in Harrison County at the time. In 1969 , 3m built a research and production facility in town. Two employees, Arthur Fry and Spencer Silver, developed Post-It Notes at the facility in 1972. The facility still produces the majority of the Post-It Notes worldwide. Robert Kirkman, co-creator of "The Walking Dead" comic book, is from Cynthiana. In the comic book series, Cynthiana is the hometown of Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes. We hope you enjoy our trip to Cynthiana!
This week, in Cynthiana, Indiana, a rather routine investigation of a minor crime leads detectives to try to track down a woman, who turns out to be missing. When her boyfriend is tracked down, he blames her husband. But the boyfriend's dark, violent past make him a suspect. What police find out begins to shock even the seasoned detectives, as they begin to recover body parts from multiple counties. But the real kicker comes when the killer decides to clear his conscience, and confess to over a dozen more murders, over a 20 year period!!Along the way, we find out that whole towns shouldn't be yard sales, that dismemberment is usually not a person's first idea, and that once you start killing, it's apparently hard to stop!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! It's National Pharmacy Appreciation Week, and Bo started the show with his own shoutout to all the Walmart pharmacies, especially to the team at Store 4686 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Bo's Impossible Question asked: What occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in one thousand years? It seemed to only take a second for a correct guess to come in from Joe at Store 363 in Marshall, Missouri. Ethan from Store 1599 in Overland Park, Kansas, and Jasmine from Store 2412 in Ellicott City, Maryland, didn't waste any time securing the right answer as well. Bo spiced it up in Detective Product, so we were caught off gourd when Carrie from Store 4818 in Jacksonville, Florida, guessed the correct answer. We're giving ‘em pumpkin to talk about in Milestone Minute as we celebrated three 25-year anniversaries. Congratulations to Jose at Store 2346 in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, Danny at Store 591 in Cynthiana, Kentucky, and Carol at Store 2131 in Topeka, Kansas. For more a-pill-ing pharmacy week and associate shoutouts, tune in now!
