Clay's conversation with Amy Irvine, the author of the 2018 book Desert Cabal: A New Season in the Wilderness. Ms. Irvine published the book on the 50th anniversary of Edward Abbey's blockbuster Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness. Desert Cabal is a careful and nuanced conversation with the late Edward Abbey, who died in 1989. Wasn't his romance with the wilderness the benefit of white privilege? And wasn't he mostly pretending he was alone in that windblown trailer at Arches National Park? Amy Irvine believes that the wilderness is healing in every way and that America's National Parks, Monuments, Forests, etc., are endangered by the agenda of the Trump administration. She sees hope in finding people to trust, care for, and rebuild America by living well but also protesting in the streets when necessary.  Interview recorded March 19, 2025.

Today's episode was originally released on March 31, 2023.In this episode, Major writes… “When I arrived in Eugene, Oregon after an arduous yet stunning road trip of camping and driving through the midwest, the Rockies, the Arches National Park, Death Valley, and up California's Route 101, I felt oddly reborn into an existence and landscape that felt like it was always a part of me. Utah has five spectacular national parks, and Arches is one of them.  It's a relatively small park.  The scenic drive is only 18 miles long, ending at the Devil's Garden area, but you'll have incredible views of the reddish rockscape the entire way right from your vehicle.   Of course, it's always better to get out on the trails and take in as much off-road as your timetable and legs will allow. Two of the park's most impressive arches – Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch – are well worth the hiking you'll need to tackle to stand in awe before them. This week the Traveler's Lynn Riddick and her trip companion, Tica Nathan, spent a day and a half in the park and offer up some of their experiences and observations.

Connor, 22,  has recently moved to Las Vegas and begun his career in the e-commerce world.  He talks about his long driving trip out there in a car without air conditioning and some of the sites he visited on the way.   His trip took him from Charlotte, NC over to Nashville, TN then up to St. Louis, MO then across to Kansas City, MO then all the way to Denver, CO and finally down to Las Vegas. He managed to hit several National Parks on the way:   St Louis Arch National Park, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Zion National Park. Since living there he has also done some camping in Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston.  He's also made his father insanely jealous because he's been inside the Sphere in Vegas already to see the Darren Aronofsky film Postcard From Earth.  The Sphere is as incredible as it looks! The trio then discuss how the different generations are handling the modern world - it's a Boomer vs. Gen Z debate! - and how optimistic the Gen Z'ers are in real life vs on social media. But, by always stamping on the sympathetic gas pedals, we never allow ourselves to recover or find balance.  Oxytocin is the molecule of connection, trust, love, sateity and safety and the counterbalance for stress. Tara Alibrandi and Resa Hayes rejoin the podcast to discuss how seeking positive relationships, meaningful social contact, laughter and play incrementally releases oxytocin, improves our autonomic homeostasis, and helps us recover and heal.
