In episode 201, Nik and Keefy tackle @mastodon 's crazy concept album "Blood Mountain!" We explain the intricate meaning of the album and every song, pondering werewolves, one-eyed Sasquaches, Griffins, tripping balls, killer Minotaurs crossed with Bambi, Biblical apocalypses, volcanos, rivers of blood, imposter syndrome, and the monomythical hero archetype! We also make LOTR references, David Duchovny, and as always the View-Askewniverse reigns supreme! "You're so caustic!" Will Nik ever like a full Mastodon album? Listen and find out! It's always a treat to talk about “hometown” metal, especially when it's one of the heaviest, most modern, progressive metal bands in the entire genre. Actually, to call them “prog” might be a bit misleading, although “progressive” is certainly an apropos descriptor for the shared artistic odyssey which Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders (collectively known as MASTODON) had embarked upon more than 20 years ago and are still going strong with no sign of stopping any time soon. Perhaps the more accurate description of MASTODON is “Atlanta's own shamans of megalithic, caveman powered, super technical, stoner sludge prog metal” (and any other applicable subgenres we might've missed). It's time to get “in the loop” and fully comprehend the best way NOT to drive down Blood Mountain to minimize vehicular induced toddler vomitus whilst mentally preparing to welcome “B.G.” to the “T&T Main Stage” as we do our best to “MRFA” while screaming excerpts from “Brave Tales of Taintler” into the “echo chamber” as you JOIN US for the “pure girth” of MASTODON Inside The Metal (ATL-Edition), Chapter 1: The Aughts (2000-2009). Today's episode is on the serial killer on blood mountain and the murder of Meredith Emerson, originally published on YouTube in July 2019. Trigger Warning: homicides, kidnapping Resources: https://linktr.ee/usualdisclaimer
Based on a true story - sort of - this Elizabeth Banks-directed film bit off a chunk of the box office earlier this year. In the style of Snakes on a Plane and Sharknado, its absurd title promised campy animal chaos that audiences needed to see to believe. When a drug smuggler dumps kilos of Columbian cocaine on Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia, a bear then snorts the coke and goes on a bloody bender. Starring Keri Russell, Ray Liota, Margo Martindale, Isaiah Whitlock Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Alden Ehrenreich, O'Shea Jackson, some kids and a CGI black bear, the film packs in scares, gags, and gore into 90-minutes of drug-fueled ursine rampage. When the movie is called Cocaine Bear, you have to wonder if it's up to snuff or simply unbearable to watch. Love is in the air! Chocolate is being eaten, roses are being given and it's time to think about what sets our reading hearts on fire. For me, that's an easy one: children's literature! I love all things children's literature. I devoured books when I was a kid, read them like it was my job as an educator (it was!) and choose to intentionally bring them into my adult reading life today. So today on the podcast, we are celebrating children's literature. And there is no better guest to help me do that than James Preller. James is author of the Jigsaw Jones series, The Courage Test, Bystander, Six Innings, Blood Mountain and many, many more. Come listen as we talk about his journey to writing, his MANY books and what's coming next. You'll find the show notes for this episode here. Love this podcast and want more? The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! On January 1, 2008, Emerson and her dog were climbing up Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest when they came into contact.Unbelievably, Emerson's head was discovered four days later. Although Hilton was possibly caught in a flash, Emerson soon became apparent that he wasn't his first victim or even that he had beheaded someone before.

On this episode we are thrilled to have author Jo Kaplan aka Joanna Parypinski. Jo is the author of more than twenty short stories and several novels, co-chair of the LA chapter of the Horror Writers Association, and an English professor. She also writes under the name Joanna Parypinski. Her fiction has appeared in Fireside Fiction, Nightmare Magazine, Black Static, Vastarien, Nightscript, Haunted Nights (ed. Ellen Datlow & Lisa Morton), and Bram Stoker Award-nominated anthology Miscreations: Gods, Monstrosities & Other Horrors. She lives with her husband and cats in Los Angeles. We ask Jo the reason for the two names and chat about the general use of pseudonyms by women in the horror genre. This moves us on to the topic of the exciting rise of diverse prospectives in horror. We talk about the writing and enjoyment of Horror Poetry; how it creates an excellent venue to plumb the darkness in ways different and maybe more effective than a short story or novel. Particularly, the power of imagery and symbolism to create pieces that literally haunt the reader. We talk about her short story, In Dark Corner and Neglected Places which appears in Three Crows Year Two: Anthology of Weird Science Fiction and Fantasy, and the broader topic of folklore and diverse cultural viewpoints in horror.Jo tells us about the reoccurring theme that has prevalent in most of her writing and gives us some deep things to consider. In discussing her soon-to-be-released novel, When the Night Bells Ring, we explore the responsibility of the horror genre to address existential horrors such as climate change and deadly pandemics.Jo reads to us from her short story, Her. In this episode, we are joined by best-selling horror and fantasy author, Sylvester Barzey. Sylvester grew up in Bronx, NY, and was later transplanted to Lawrence, GA. A military veteran with an addiction to all things horror, Sylvester's goal is to shine a spotlight on BIPOC characters within the horror/fantasy genre. He strives to produce Black heroes who overcome world-shattering events and rise triumphant. His mission is to change horror so that his children can look at it and see themselves as survivors. We discuss his life-long love of horror that brought him to the genre. In his writing, especially his Planet Dead series, Sylvester tries to spotlight black families. He sees a deficit in BIPOC characters in the genre not being the main characters and wants to change that. We discuss the impact that George Romero had on developing his thoughts in this area. We asked him what he enjoys about creating in apocalyptic settings and how the pandemic has shifted, or not, his perspective. We chat about his experience being one of a few black authors working in the zombie genre , and what he finds the most challenging and the most rewarding. Sylvester tells us about the podcast Black Geek Couple that he hosts with his wife Angel where they discuss movies, books, and pop culture. He shares the audiobook intro of Planet Dead with us. It is chilling and intriguing, don't miss it! Meredith Emerson and her black labrador, Ella, went for a routine hike on January 1, 2008. When Meredith didn't show up to work the next day, her friends and authorities searched the trails of "Blood Mountain" and were able to find some of her belongings, which led them to a killer with a secret history of victims. Josue Gomez, or recently named "Spider-Meatball," joins Jester on the podcast to share with us how his life changed for the positive on October 20, 2021. Josue tells us how he started working for ZPacks, began hiking, and made the decision that his life was valuable and worth living after he summited Blood Mountain on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Hiking has become an important part of Josue's mental health journey and he does speak about suicide in this episode. Jester and Josue wanted to make sure the National Suicide Hotline number was mentioned and posted in the show notes. The number is 1-800-273-8255. Metalheads! This discography blast is our spinning of four albums by one of Tracey's favorite bands, Mastodon. We check out Leviathan (2004), Blood Mountain (2006), Crack the Skye (2009), & Once More 'Round the Sun (2014). A note on sound quality, we recorded this on Dec 11th mere hours after the devastating tornadoes that ravaged Western Kentucky on Dec 10th. As you can imagine, the power and internet outages are not conducive to crystal clear audio. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
My guests normally get on the show through listener suggestions, but this week, I found Michael Dunford on Facebook. He received a remarkable letter from a grateful father, and it was Mike's reaction to that letter that made me want to reach out to him and invite him on the show. Our initial conversation, which I always try to do prior to recording, was illuminating in so many ways. Mike's path hasn't always been smooth, and he shares a visceral tale of dark days before he found what he wanted to do with his life. That path is now clearly fulfilling him. If you'd like to camp on Mike's farm, just email him at the number below and share YOUR appreciation for the kindnesses he offers. The letter that compelled me to invite Mike onto the podcast in the first place, is shown, with Mike's permission, below. Sarah Sunshine Landis is the latest member of our Class of 2022, proving herself to be quietly confident in her own ability to successfully complete the trail. We'll be catching up with Sarah as her hike progresses. Chuck Hayes, however, is the only one of this year's class who has started his hike. We caught up with him at Mountain Crossings, as he reflected those early days and his climb up Blood Mountain. Finally, Winton Porter's Passin' Thru is coming to a close, with just two chapters to the end. This week, we conclude Chapter 18, following the shock news of Jennifer's ex, John. If you like what we're doing on the Hiking Radio Network, and want to see our shows continue, please consider supporting us with either a one-off or monthly donation. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Shannon Finn became Joy this year. I followed her on Facebook and appreciated her visceral writing, where she rarely held back if she had something to say, which was often! We've often remarked at the life-changing nature of a long-distance hike, and Joy has experienced this change in compelling ways. Not only did she lose weight through her hiking, she also found out who she was meant to be. Her story is inspiring. You can follow Joy on Facebook and Instagram at https://www.facebook.com/shannon.finn.33 https://www.instagram.com/alotofshannonigans/ Our second Class of 2022 member is Sarah Fox, who is going to Flip Flop from Harpers Ferry, taking her dog Marshall with her for part of the journey. Sarah's knowledge of dogs in the outdoors is extensive, as you can see at https://adventureswithmydogs.com/ We'll catch up with Sarah again as she prepares to head out. We also heard from Paul Collins, or Skunkape. Paul is one of the organizers of the Hangcon Gathering, in Florida this coming January. Jester and I will be attending, so I invited Paul to come on and fill us in on a few details. You can learn more at https://hangcon.com/ In Winton Porter's Passin' Thru, I resume Chapter 15 where I left off last time, with Winton lying in an exhausted heap at the top of Blood Mountain, having attempted his fastest run up there. If you like what we're doing on the Hiking Radio Network, and want to see our shows continue, please consider supporting us with either a one-off or monthly donation. You'll find the donate button on each Hiking Radio Network page at https://www.hikingradionetwork.com If you prefer NOT to use PayPal, you can now support us via check by mailing it to Mighty Blue Publishing, PO Box 6161, Sun City Center, FL 35751. Any support is gratefully received. THIS OFFER ENDS AT THE END OF THE YEAR.
Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
This week's guest, Gail Muller, is another of those unlikely adventurers, whose story is a breathless tale of triumph against a debilitating illness and chronic pain. Gail reveled in the "normal" cuts, scrapes, bumps, and bruises of the Appalachian Trail, precisely because they weren't the chronic pain she'd been experiencing for 15 years. Returning home and basically housebound because of Covid, Gail wrote an inspiring tale about her journey to and on the trail. Each week, we'll chat with somebody who has chosen 2022 as the year that they will put their life on hold and head to that winding footpath along America's Appalachian Mountains. We'll meet them over the next few months, then follow them–in whichever direction they are heading–and hopefully meet them again at the end of their 2200-mile journey. This week's guest is Chuck Hayes, who is planning an extremely early start! Finally, we have the first part of Chapter 15 in Winton Porter's "Passin Thru," where Winton feels the power of an earthquake before trying to set a personal best in a run up Blood Mountain. In today's episode of backpacker radio presented by The Trek we are joined by Ben Lawhon the Director of Education and Research at Leave No Trace. Not that Leave No Trace needs any introduction, as this is a framework we've spoken about countless times on the show and I'm guessing you were familiar with it before Backpacker Radio entered your lives, but this interview is incredibly important and we think you'll find surprisingly entertaining. Not only do we go very deep on the proper way to shit in the backcountry including why poop soup is king, but we cover a range of topics including why something as seemingly small as tossing an apple core off the trail can have profound impacts, how social media interplays with Leave No Trace, and the best way to educate others who are in violation of LNT, including why saying nothing can sometimes be the best policy. We're very sincere in saying that we think you'll find a lot of very interesting tidbits in our conversation with Ben. We wrap the show with a triple crown of 90s sitcoms, how we would handle a docile zombie apocalypse of stinky people, and a mailbag featuring the cinnamon connection invading people's dreams. In this Dateline classic, hiker Meredith Emerson goes missing on Georgia's Blood Mountain on New Year's Day 2008. Law enforcement officers become concerned after finding a police baton with some her possessions on a trail. Dateline NBC's Dennis Murphy reports. Originally aired on NBC on August 26, 2011.
Purveyors of fine Southern Fried prog rock, Mastodon, are one of those bands who have slowly grown in stature with each album. Over the years, their sound has evolved, but the musicianship has remained nothing short of breathtaking. It’s rare you find a band that can play like fuck and continue pushing the limits of what they can do as their career progresses. Some will argue, as we do in this episode, that their earlier, heavier stuff is better, but that appears to be the minority opinion if record sales, tours, awards and accolades are anything to go by. Remission is their debut album, a masterwork in which they combine the speed of thrash with the twenty ton weight riffage one finds in sludge metal. There are also hints of the prog rock that they would later go on to embrace, yet as a statement, as the opening salvo of what has become a storied career, it heralds the arrival of something special. Many will say the two albums that follow this, Leviathan and Blood Mountain, constitute their best work. However, no on can deny that Remission is a fantastic start to a glittering career. Is this their Unsung classic? You know what to do.
