We review the absolute hell out of Kevin Costner movies.
Sir Jeff Niceswanger, Corey Gice, Adam Herman
It has been a long time Costnerphiles, but not as long as it was between the filming and release of the topic of this episodes film review. This Canadian student art project was kept "in the can" for 5 years. Filmed before Fandango and Silverado, this dumpster fire was released on the heels of Bull Durham and Field of Dreams. A classic studio tactic to salvage value from obvious mistakes. It seems fitting then to have waited over a month to let you hear our review. Good luck making heads or tales of the actual movie and it is probably one you can skip...but the Costner Completionists out there will have to buy it on VHS because even Tubi stopped streaming this crap days after we watched it.
The PodCostner is on the precipice of a trip to the promised land. But before we play, we get down to the hard work of talking about one of the unsung heroes of the Costnerverse, Stephen Simmons. Costner's character in The War is every bit the conflicted hero that a Marvel comic book might portray. It is too bad then that his Achilles heel turns out to be giant boulders! What is funny about being crushed to death by falling rocks you might ask? You had better just click play and find out.
In this very special episode, the PodCostner tackles a lot of very special topics. Thats right 90's sitcom fans, we are talking about drugs. Crack mostly, but also alcohol. Black or White brings us our first version of drunk Costner along with a whole heap of racial and diversity issues that we have thus far not been required to address directly. But we will cower no longer behind our microphones. The world needs more opinions from three middle aged white men like it needs to breath! We are the voice of the Costnerverse and we must not shrink in the cause. There are afterall "white saviors" that need our criticisms and alcoholisms that need our enabling. Also Jeff brought presents! Support the show
Well we finally did it...we really jumped the shark on this one. If you have followed us this far hopefully you can indulge us in some good natured shenanigans. Hopefully you can look the other way on some "creative license". Hopefully...we don't get sued.Lately we have been opining a film that takes our muse to the stars, a vehicle that would take Costner to space. We could wait no longer. Join us for an AI inspired/created adventure to the friggin Moon ya'll! Support the show
In a nod to a hero from our pasts that isn't Costner we took a different path this week. A side quest to Applebee's led to a date with destiny at our local AMC theatre to see the hopefully final entry into the Indiana Jones saga. Only the second time we have reviewed a movie currently in theatre's we should include a very heavy SPOILER ALERT for not only this movie but also the trash bin that is The Flash as we basically give away the end of that too on accident. So push play on this episode, apply your Aspercreme, take a few Advils and GET OFF OUR LAWN! Support the show
Will we be discussing the Joss Whedon version of Justice League at any time in the future? Absolutely fucking not because that film doesn't exist anymore!!! Do we have to do another episode for the black and white version of this film titled Justice is Gray? No that would be insane. Did we even have to do a review of THIS film? Probably not. We here at the PodCostner go up, up and above and beyond to bring you our thoughts on every tasty little Costner morsel we can get our hands on. Enjoy our rundown of the longest (and dare we say best) superhero film of all time. Even if its only connection to the Costnerverse is a creepy disembodied voice towards the very end that was obviously reused from a previous film. Support the show
Space Costner, the final frontier. This is an episode from the podcast PodCostner. Its continuing mission is to seek out new content from older content and boldly watch what you the listener may not have watched before. That being said, Costner doesn't actually go to space in film, but in Hidden Figures he gets to make sure someone does. So do the math, keep fighting and listen to three white guys tip toe around some pretty heavy civil rights issues while trying to be light and fun because after all this is a Disney film so reality gets a heavy dose of happily ever after. Support the show
This weeks episode features a loaf about just looking for his floozy, and a heavy dose of spy craft drama with a Shamamalanesque twist for the ages.. No Way Out requires a HUGE SPOILER ALERT! Usually in with a movie that is over 36 years of age we wouldn't care but if you have yet to see this film...maybe watch it real quick before you listen to us ruin this amazing film. It's available on HBO so get on it! That being said, we dedicate this review to the life and artistic achievements of the singular talent of cinematographer John Alcott. He might not have filmed the moon landing but also...maybe he did? Support the show
A true fellow Costner Completist would not let the name of this episode fool them...but lets be honest here, we know we are rare breed. For the rest of you the true title of the movie this week is Stacys Knights, or is it Double Down? Or perhaps Winning Streak? We can answer that for you if you'd care to listen to us blather on about movie that started it all for Kevin...or you could skip this episode and just google it. But if you're still reading this episode description you might as well push play and get this one out of the way just like Costner did. For even the tallest of redwoods grow from the humblest seed.Support the show
On this episode we talk about AMERICA'S James Bond, that's right, Jack Ryan! No... not the dude from the office, no not Ben Affleck, no not Harrison Ford, NO not Alec Baldwin... that's right you guessed it: Chris Pine. So join the conversation, and hold on tighter than Agent Secret Handshake. Let's talk about Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit! As always, please share and support and let us know what you want to hear!Support the show
We're back in the saddle again with another historic banger of an episode! It's Wyatt Earp time and you know what that means? We've got Stetson hats, we've got horses, we've got gun fights. There are murders in the dusty streets of dustbowl towns, rampant 19th century diseases, Laudanum abuse, and prize winning moustaches abound! We take this 3+ hour film and boil it down to a clean hour-and-twenty in typical Podcostner fashion. Filled with the hilarity you Costnerds have come to expect and enjoy.Come along with us as we revisit a 90's classic and find comparisons to other greats like Tombstone, Die Hard, and Back to the Future III.Yeeeee Hawww Buckaroos!Keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram! Have you ever wondered what Costner could have done with a John Wick type of scenario? Or how orange Kevin could get? Maybe you've found yourself wondering just how bloody The Cost could get and still keep coming? Well if you have way too much time on your hands then track down the 90's epic that you probably haven't seen yet, or just listen to us tell you about all the good parts. Worst case scenario you get to see a bit of a certain rear end...Support the show
This week we hit the metaphorical road to celebrate the very first time the world was given a film starring Kevin Costner. And while we did not actually go anywhere, you can still come along for the ride with us on an auditory journey through your streaming devices. Along for the trip with your groovy hosts is Brandon, who knows his way around a film score better than Costner knows his way around lassoing a train! So how about a Fandango? Support the show
Yes we know that the title is actually 13 Days, but after a failed recording attempt and a successful second outing it felt like a few more to us than just 13. From the minds that brought you the Bay of Pigs, 13 Days documents the fortnight that almost ended everything. Fans of political dramas will love the story telling while fans of actors doing awful regional dialects will love the dialogue. This is the story of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis told through the typical Hollywood lens. BUT worry not Costnerds, 13 Days is just the launchpad for this bombshell of an episode. As per usual the tangents ensue and the hilarity flies loose, like an atomic bomb with a broken guidance system.Duck and cover - Here we come.Support the show
Down one crew member, those that remain have to think quickly to save the PodCostner from certain doom. Fear not Costnerds, because the day is not lost! With Adam chasing his dream of finding old things underground in a far off land, Corey and Sir Jeff recruit an engineer with skills that rival Mr. Montgomery Scott himself. Prepare for an away mission to the strange new world of Star Trek, with special guest star Andrew Stern at the helm. A very special episode that tackles issues like extinct animal husbandry, time travel heist story telling, and an entire cinematic universe completely devoid of Kevin Costner?!?Adam will return next episode, but until then enjoy our take on the best darn SciFi whale theft fish out of water movie that William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy ever made.Support the show
After far too long, the PodCostnerds are back on that shiz! This week we use current events as the inspiration for our madness. Unfortunately by the time we released this it is weeks after the Amber Heard V. John Christopher Depp Jr.'s so we are probably too late to the party for anyone to notice. 3 Days to Kill gives us a Costner so growly and sternum smashing that you might confuse this film for Criminal. Thankfully Amber Heard is there to keep him focused on the task at hand...randomly assigned murder. If you love fast paced action, parental retribution and bicycle rides through Paris then this is the film for you. And if you'd rather skip it then just listen to us talk about it for a while and maybe do the dishes or something to pass the time. Support the show
For this very special episode we bring you a glaring lack of Costner. Instead we took the opportunity to chat with a jack-of-many-trades Wesley Johnson, the screen writer for the locally produced film The Hand That Feeds. This spooky tale actually features a cameo by the one and only Adam Herman and The Slamming Doors.... ;) It was about time that we brought a bit of legitimacy to our show by discussing the process of filmmaking with someone who actually does it. Hopefully the insights we glean will make us better podcasters and film talker-people....but if not then at least we had fun! Keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram! In this episode the PodCostner finds that it isn't how big your role is, its how you use it that counts. Joining us to spin off on endless nerdy superhero tangents is Jeff's old pal Bradie. While he is not an expert of anything we could ascertain, he has listened to every episode of our humble little podcast and let it be known that the PodCostner absolutely rewards nepotism. Costner graces the screen for literal minutes of this DC Comics reboot origin story Snyderverse CGI epic in the role he was born to play, Americas greatest adoptive father Jonathan Kent. His scene stealing reunion with Diane Lane is a literal master class in how to act good on film and be handsome at all times. So sit back, maybe a little bit further back...and enjoy our review of the only hairy chested Superman movie ever made, Man of Steel!Keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram! Rumor Has It... This movie is awful! Lets preface this with the understanding that while Kevin Costner is in this movie, it isn't really a Kevin Costner lead film. While we have to draw the line somewhere for the sake of the PodCostner - this is not the movie upon which that line will be drawn. Therefore, you will have to fight through this episode just like we had to fight through the movie. Take it for what it is and try to enjoy yourself. Life is about the journey and not necessarily the destination. In this case the journey involves possibly one of the most cringeworthy PG-13 rated movies involving intercourse that we have had the pleasure of yelling at each other about. Oh...well we tried really hard and worked all week to make it for you the least you could do is act like you love it :(. In uncertain times people tend to panic. Without Sir Jeff's calming voice, the PodCostner has grown a bit...Cagey. This week's episode takes a hard right turn into uncharted waters. We welcome Alexis to the show and lean on her vast Nic Cage experience to help us find out what makes Face/Off tick. Releasing a Nic Cage episode one week after the man's birthday and 4 days before Costner's birthday is both timely and completely accidental. In other words, totally on brand for the PodCostner.
