For all the hysteria about misinformation and disinformation, maybe we prefer ignorance. That's the intriguing thesis of the illustrious Columbia University intellectual historian, Mark Lilla, in his new book, Ignorance is Bliss. It all begins, of course, inside Plato's cave in his Republic, that metaphorical preface to Western thought where we are subjected to illusionary shadows and delusional reflections. And, for Lilla at least, it may end in the America of late 2024, where many of us appear to relish being back in Plato's cave, staring - sometimes even perhaps knowingly - at illusionary shadows and delusional reflections. So if ignorance is bliss, then what, exactly, is knowledge?Mark Lilla is Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University and a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books and other publications worldwide. His books include The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics; The Shipwrecked Mind: On Political Reaction; The Stillborn God: Religion, Politics, and the Modern West; and The Reckless Mind: Intellectuals in Politics. Our conversation is a deep dive into his remarkable musical journey and the experiences that have shaped his illustrious career.Luke's life has been steeped in music from an early age. At age four, he began touring and singing with his family band and took up the fiddle at seven. His prodigious talent quickly became evident as he went on to win the National Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho, six times in his respective age categories. At sixteen, he made history by becoming the youngest winner of the Grand Champion division. By age ten, Luke had already made a mark at Nashville's Grand Master Fiddle Championship as the youngest top-ten finalist. In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville, diving headfirst into a full-time music career. His early years in Tennessee were marked by his stint with Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, where his exceptional fiddle playing earned him his first Grammy Award. Following this, he joined the John Cowan Band. One of our best podcasts yet, we discuss Gnosticism and the "occult" as they relate to Solar Idealism. A note from CB Robertson: Gnosticism is not something to dwell on. But to avoid being led astray, it's probably wise to be aware of what Gnosticism actually is, and what it looks like when the gnostic impulse expresses itself in worldviews that go by other names. For more resources on the topic, James Lindsay has two short(ish) videos and one very long video going deeper into the ideas here (and it is worth saying, Lindsay is mostly borrowing from the work of Eric Voegelin):1. He's going to have 15+ paintings in a one-man show this coming January. We delve into not only the show and the paintings but at the more technical aspects of his painting process. It was a very introspective podcast and it was amazing to hear him speak on his process and how he solves the problems that he encounters at the easel. We also go into AI-generated art and discuss the ramifications artists are going to face down the road. So that's the kind of podcast it is and the kind I enjoy doing the most.  We get to have a nice back-and-forth and explore what's happening in his world and the world of art as a whole. It was a really fun podcast and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Specifically, here are some of the things we cover on this important topic that needs to be heard: A few of Jayson's top lessons that he learned as a Marine and how he uses them now in the civilian world. Why the transition from the military to the civilian world is often frightening and scary.   Why Jayson wrote his book (that just came out September 5th). How to “Embrace life with strength & power” when you're getting your tail whopped.  You talk about “Pray for Peace…Prepare for War.” Talk more about that… What would be your recommendations be for young men & women today who not only want and need to survive, but want to lead and thrive in a changed world? Why I love the quote, “bleed more in training and die less in war.” How to be a modern day Warrior in the times we live in now. Jayson's big hope with this book and why everyone needs to read it and pass it on to a friend or family member.   I'm really proud of Jayson Downing. Not only is he a new author, he completed my “God-Sized Dreams” program a year ago and committed to writing and publishing this book. Additionally, he's about to become a first-time Dad in just a matter of days with his wife Dr. Carleigh Golightly.    If you would like to purchase his book, you can do so on Amazon or visit his website at www.TheWarriorJournal.com. Complexity Series. Five Cs of History. Episode #1 of 4. The dominant narrative- and the story that many of you expect to hear today- is that fatness used to be less stigmatized; that plump women were beautiful and plump men regarded as wealthy and important but that somewhere along the way, thinness became associated with beauty and fatness became medicalized as obesity and stigmatized as disgusting, leading to today's skinny-loving, fat-phobic culture. There are, of course, elements of truth to this story but… it's also way more COMPLEX than this. This week for our Complexity series, we're covering the complex history of fatness in the premodern West. Find transcripts and show notes here: www.digpodcast.org Learn more about your ad choices. This goal cannot be achieved by the conservative's usual ham-fisted methods of calling for more punishment of men, making endless excuses for women, and putting everyone to sleep with moral exhortation about the sacredness of marriage. Instead, we must consider the actual incentives now operating upon men and women, as economists long ago learned to do, and focus our efforts on altering them in ways conducive to family formation.

Our groundwater and surface water resources are linked, both integral parts of Earth's fresh water systems. Despite this fact, groundwater is being extracted and exploited around the world at alarming rates. This is causing catastrophic consequences to our springs, creeks, rivers, lakes and waterways, as well as the ecological health and productivity of our landscapes. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 108 Marxism is not a philosophy. Neither are its derivatives, like "Wokeness" (Woke Marxism). These are a strain within a broader category of cult religious movements that pose as economics, sociology, and politics. The broad name for these Esoteric cult religions is "Gnosticism," but that's a confusing label for a number of reasons. The first of these reasons is that "gnosticism" as a term, either as a descriptive or proper noun, means several things at once, which requires clarification. Another is that as economic, social, and political movements, they don't look at all like the pre-modern spiritualist and mystical movements that go by those names. In this groundbreaking episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay clarifies the term "gnosticism" and unmasks what amounts to a huge "New Age" movement in the Middle Ages as the source of a thread of Gnostic cult belief that has shaped every facet of the West for at least the last three hundred years. He also explains how the shift from the Middle Ages to the Modern period included a shift in the Gnostic project, out of overt spiritualism and into exactly those society-building realms of economics, sociology, and politics. Join him to gain a completely new understanding of these dangerous movements and how they're relevant to our lives today. I love this podcast on so many levels because, you know, he's had this really tough road to get where he is and not just from a point of just trying to make it as an artist. It's always a hard road. But Kevin was a very active, athletic individual who was doing guided trips, you know, teaching biking and mountain biking and really spending lots of time in the back woods. Then he had a major accident and crushed his T-12, which caused him to be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He didn't let that stop him. In fact, he used it as a motivator to really become who he is today. So when you hear something like that, you've got to just go, wow, that's the kind of person I want to meet. And his paintings are wonderful. I had no idea about his accident until actually last night.
