We kick things off with the star-studded drama Anniversary. This thriller (starring Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler) explores what happens when a family falls apart just as a mysterious new movement sweeps the country. It's tense, emotional, and it definitely made us think twice about our next family reunion!Fun Flix Fact: Despite the heavy on-screen drama, the cast spent their breaks having high-stakes board game tournaments on set. Apparently, Kyle Chandler is a formidable Monopoly player and kept the bank on lockdown between takes!Next, we're hitting the road for Crime 101, the gritty heist thriller that everyone's talking about. It's a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a brilliant jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) and a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) along the Pacific Coast Highway.Fun Flix Fact: This film marks a massive on-screen reunion for Hemsworth and Ruffalo. To prepare for their rivalry, they avoided each other on set for the first few weeks of filming to keep their on-screen tension as authentic as possible! If you're a fan of a good fright, you'll love our review of Whistle. When a group of teenagers discovers an ancient, cursed whistle, they inadvertently summon an entity that hunts anyone who hears its call. It's "don't make a sound" taken to a terrifying new level.Fun Flix Fact: Director Corin Hardy is a legend when it comes to practical effects. He insisted that the "Creature" be played by a physical performer in a custom suit rather than using CGI, meaning the terrified reactions from the young cast are often very, very real! For this week's Anniversary Corner, we're hacking into the mainframe to celebrate 25 years of the slick, stylish Swordfish. Starring Halle Berry, John Travolta, and Hugh Jackman, it's the ultimate early-2000s tech-thriller.Fun Flix Fact: The film's incredible opening explosion was filmed using a "bullet-time" rig featuring 135 different cameras. At the time, it was one of the most expensive and complex practical stunts ever choreographed for a film! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. James Cameron-Wilson says that #1 Sam Raimi's Send Help, with Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien, the tale of a work couple being stranded on a desert island, seems overfamiliar. Blending comedy and thrills, he enjoyed it in a schlocky way. #19 is 100 Nights of Hero, a bonkers movie based on a graphic novel with Richard E. Grant and Felicity Jones. Set in a parallel, colour-blind world it's about storytelling and the empowering of women. It does have a distinctive look but is all too flat and needs a stronger director and style. Far more impressive is Anniversary on Netflix. It stars Diane Lane as the matriarch of a close-knit family and is a state-of-the-nation epic with a frighteningly prescient script. There's so much going on, James had to watch it again. Very credible, often tense and with a strong cast, it's a really brilliant movie he discovered completely by accident. Gabby Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman join the show after winning Sundance's Grand Jury Prize to unpack the ten-year road behind Nuisance Bear, a polar bear's journey through two connected worlds: tourist-heavy Churchill, Manitoba, and the Inuit community of Arviat, where the stakes are far more complex and far less welcoming. The film becomes a meditation on coexistence, control, and who gets labeled a “nuisance” in a shared landscape. We dig into craft and access: finding the right position for the camera so the story can reveal itself, structuring the feature in two halves, and how a dialogue-free short film born partly out of COVID constraints became the proof of concept that unlocked TIFF, The New Yorker, and eventually A24. They also talk candidly about what the audience never sees: rough living conditions, long hours waiting, the specific agony of “the best thing happened, and we missed it,” and the slow but important work of earning trust, where listening comes before filming. They share influences that shaped them, including Miyazaki's sense of nature and modernity, Gus Van Sant's bravery with form, and John Cassavetes' belief in the energy of a set. The conversation closes on what it meant to experience Sundance as both a career peak and a personal milestone, getting engaged and then married during the festival. Advice to filmmakers: be tenacious when you know you need to tell a story, protect trust like it is part of the craft, and do not turn on each other when the pressure spikes. What Movies Are You Watching? This episode is brought to you by BeastGrip. This week, the boys jump aboard the Andrea Gail for The Perfect Storm 2000 Review, the Wolfgang Petersen disaster epic that tried to answer one simple question:What if Mother Nature just decided you were finished? It's a Monday night. You've done your research. You head down past Burleigh, just west of Palm Beach. Three chairs are waiting. Gow's checking stats, Damo's preparing the Snorbs Report, and Whitey's tweaking the levels.Game time.Based on the true story of a sword-fishing crew who sailed directly into a once-in-a-lifetime weather system, the film brings together an all-star cast, George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, Diane Lane and a collection of "hey-that-guy!" actors, but the real star might just be the ocean itself.Whitey is deep in his Clooney phase and openly declares him possibly "the most handsome man we've ever reviewed," while Gow and Damo debate whether the movie actually needs characters at all once the waves hit 100 feet. Because this is Born to Watch, the conversation doesn't stay serious for long.We cover:The legendary boat-on-the-wave shotWhy every sea captain is basically Captain AhabThe world's worst job (professional fisherman easily makes the grand final)Mark Wahlberg's historically patchy beardThe glow-stick responsibilities aboard a fishing vesselWhether the crew should've just sailed to Portugal insteadThe boys also dig into the film's strange structure. Half character drama, half disaster movie, half weather documentary, and somehow still compelling once the storm begins. Even critics admitted the storytelling problems stop mattering once the chaos kicks in. There's praise for the James Horner score, debate about the true events versus movie invention, and an unexpected emotional reaction to the funeral scenes. Plus:The 2000 Movie Lottery (Remember the Titans vs Bring It On vs The Cell)Box office success vs critic ratingsThe Snores Report returnsMichael Ironside is officially considered for Born to Watch RoyaltyAnd of course, the most important question of all:If you knew the storm was coming… would you still turn the boat around for the payday?Because sometimes the scariest part of a disaster movie isn't the wave, it's the decision that leads to it.JOIN THE CREWIf you enjoyed the episode, don't just listen, become part of the Born to Watch community. Documentary filmmaker and editor J.M. Harper discusses Soul Patrol, his six-year journey telling the story of the first Black special operations unit in Vietnam. What began with reading Eddie Manuel's book grew into years of weekly conversations, slow trust-building, and eventual access to never-before-seen Super 8 footage and photographs shot by the soldiers themselves. Harper also reflects on how his work editing Jeen‑Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy sharpened his instincts around character, structure, and letting footage reveal meaning over time.We talk about point of view and theme as the engine of a film, not ideas layered on afterward. Harper frames Soul Patrol around a central question: whether speaking openly about acts committed in war, long buried and rarely acknowledged, can offer any form of healing. Drawing on Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, he discusses how cinema can confront violence without glamorizing it, and the ethical tension of rendering horrific experiences with clarity, restraint, and intention. He reflects on editing as discovery, assembling a team of editors with different strengths, and shaping a film that moves between memory, present-day reckoning, and historical record. What Movies Are You Watching? This episode is brought to you by BeastGrip. Jamelle and John are back for the new year with an episode on the 1997 thriller Murder at 1600, directed by Dwight Little and starring Wesley Snipes, Diane Lane, Alan Alda and Dennis Miller. It is yet another entry into the mini-boomlet of films whose premise, essentially, is what if the president were horny…and murderous. In their conversation, Jamelle and John discuss the relationship between the media and Americans' conception of power, and how this even influences decision makers at the very top. They also discuss the difference between conspiracies in the public mind and conspiracies in reality.A reminder that they also have a Patreon where they cover the films as of the Cold War as well as produce a weekly politics show. You can find that at patreon.com/unclearpod.

We spent some time with director Jan Komasa recently and he told us about the cast of his new movie ANNIVERSARY, what it was like trying to make a movie during the SAG-AFTRA strike and how ANNIVERSARY went from an idea during a family gathering to the big screen. So let's talk about it...
It's Halloween weekend and there isn't a lot of horror but Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy still have eight films to talk about. They include a documentary about an archbishop who wrote the gay disco anthem of the ‘70s (I Was Born This Way) and another true story about drugs, family and revenge in the Ozarks (Violent Ends). CBS News' Omar Villafranca reports on how families are coping. The top city prosecutor in Washington, D.C., claims an ATM provider is enabling a crypto scam where victims think they're protecting their money by buying bitcoin. CBS News' Ash-har Quraishi spoke to a woman who says she was a victim of the scam. Dictionary.com announced on Wednesday that it had chosen "67," pronounced "six seven" as its word of the year. The slang phrase is very popular among teens and kids. CBS News' Vlad Duthiers has more. "The Pink Jet," a nonprofit organization, is on a new mission to empower those battling breast cancer, promote screenings and raise money to find a cure. CBS News' Natalie Morales has more. Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 movie "Hardball." They introduce the film (1:34), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (8:14). In Amount of Baseball (17:50), the scouts initially disagree, but slightly convince each other. Ellen has two potential player comps. Baseball Accuracy (25:26) compares this Little League play to other films, with just a couple of editorial / geographical issues. Ellen defends Frank Thomas's honor and digs in on Sammy Sosa's consecutive homers, and records by Ken Griffey Jr, Don Mattingly, and Kevin Mench. That is not Wrigley. Those are not NBA games. Luis Garcia's dance step is considered. Storytelling (39:23) is a real challenge, when the entire inveterate gambler storyline does not work. Plus, white savior problems, a very confusing moral, and a complete lack of necessary exposition. There are so many unanswered questions. How does he earn their trust? Why does G-Baby have to die? Eulogy issues, uniform issues. At long last, the Score Tool (1:24:13) is only a partial respite, with some small problems of its own. They consider some of the soundtrack songs, including "Ghetto," "Hardball," "Big Poppa," "Where the Party At," and R. Kelly. Acting (1:30:21) considers the ceiling and floor of a slightly mis-cast Keanu Reeves. Diane Lane was trying, John Hawkes had an impossible task, D.B. Sweeney deserves better. Young actors Michael B. Jordan, Bryan Hearne, Julian Griffith, and DeWayne Warren almost save the movie. Neither Delightfulness of Catcher (1:39:26) or Delightfulness of Announcer (1:40:27) offer much. In Lack of Misogyny (1:41:00), they discuss the insipidity of the lame romantic subplot. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:45:06), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:48:56), Favorite Moment (1:50:43) Least Favorite Moment (1:53:00), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (1:54:54), Dreamiest Player (1:56:50), Favorite Performance (1:57:09), and Next Time (2:00:32). In this episode of Off the Radar, we dive into Mad Dog Time — the 1996 gangster comedy that somehow managed to assemble an all-star cast (Richard Dreyfuss, Jeff Goldblum, Diane Lane, and even Joey Bishop) yet (rightfully) still slipped completely under the cultural radar. Written and directed by Larry Bishop, this bizarre mix of noir parody, nightclub drama, and philosophical gunfights left critics... and one of us baffled. We are coming in hot (think wearing leather pants in the desert hot) for #SCI-FI-JULY Presents: Dystopian Summer 2: Dystopian HARDER. This week, we talk about WHEELS OF FIRE, a nearly New World movie directed by the famous/infamous Cirio H Santiago and starring Gary Watkins (Hunter), Laura Banks (Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan) and Lynda Wiesmeier (Avenging Angel). If you haven't seen WHEELS OF FIRE you should know it's very different from the grossly overlooked action/musical, STREETS OF FIRE, starring Michael Pare and Diane Lane. WHEELS OF FIRE blends everything you loved about MAD MAX and THE ROAD WARRIOR with a pinch of Lucio Fulci's CONQUEST and a heavy dollop of STRYKER. WHEELS OF FIRE takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where shirts are optional, cars blow up at the slightest provocation and some people are trying to build a spaceship to reach a newly discovered planet. Trace and his sister, Arlie, find themselves on a crash course of bad decisions that puts them in harm's way at every turn. Sadly, Arlie gets the worst of it and Trace lacks any sense of urgency to save her. Instead, he and his handy flamethrower blazes across the sandy abyss getting into fights with everyone he meets until he meets Stinger, a young, leather-strapped ingénue with a pet eagle that sounds like a hawk. As you might imagine, one of us is not happy about this. Each of us gives our own Letterboxd description for WHEELS OF FIRE and we spend an inordinate amount of time talking about the Baldwin brothers. More specifically, the brothers that aren't named 'Alec'. Can you name 12 movies off the top of your head starring Stephen Baldwin? We couldn't either. Tonight, Born to Watch delves deep into the dusty, desolate West Texas badlands to dissect a modern masterpiece: the Coen Brothers' haunting 2007 thriller, No Country for Old Men. It's a film that sidesteps genre conventions, delivering existential dread with a bolt gun and cowboy boots. The full Born to Watch crew is in session, and from the moment Whitey's epic intro begins, you know this episode is going to be as layered and unpredictable as Anton Chigurh himself.Right from the start, the boys are firing, rattling off 2007's Oscar lineup, debating Juno's place in film history, and showering praise on Daniel Day-Lewis' oil-thirsty turn in There Will Be Blood. But tonight belongs to a different kind of monster: Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh. Is he cinema's most terrifying villain? Whitey thinks he's second only to Darth Vader, and with that hair, maybe even scarier. As the team recalls first viewings and rewatch counts (shoutout to G Man's 15 and counting), the discussion spirals into tales of obsessive fans, including a local surfboard shaper who watched the movie weekly and theorised on every nuanced frame. This isn't just a movie, it's a layered riddle that demands attention, multiple viewings, and, apparently, a decent video store rental policy. Each Born to Watch host brings their own flavour to the conversation. Damo labels it a “one watcher” for its grim tone, while Dan declares it a regular “downtime” favourite on the land, fitting for a film that captures so much dusty silence and moral ambiguity. G Man and Whitey, meanwhile, dig into the deeper layers, noting how every watch reveals something new.The cast gets a well-deserved spotlight, with special attention paid to Javier Bardem's quietly horrifying performance. Gow dives into Bardem's rugby-playing past (yes, really) and his reluctance toward violent roles, ironic, considering Chigurh is basically Death with a pageboy cut. Josh Brolin's understated turn as Llewelyn Moss also gets love, as does Tommy Lee Jones' weary, philosophical sheriff. The gang reflects on Woody Harrelson's all-too-brief but memorable role and Kelly Macdonald's heartbreaking final scene. And in true Born to Watch fashion, the episode isn't just about highbrow film theory; it's a ride. Expect detours into Aussie weather patterns, rogue toasties, and the quality of Diane Lane's 2010s filmography. There are tangents on Baywatch, Peter Phelps' acting career, and even a debate on the New Yorker's most pretentious film review ever written. Trust us, you won't want to miss Whitey translating the nonsense of a critic who thinks name-dropping Elmore Leonard makes a hot take.As always, the team weighs in on whether the film cracks the Rank Bank. But the real joy is in the journey: Gow's taglines, Dan's literary deep dives, and Damo's reluctant respect all add up to a collective conclusion: No Country for Old Men might just be the smartest film to ever feature a cattle gun.So, if you love Oscar-winning nihilism, coin toss-induced dread, or just want to hear a bunch of Aussie legends unravel one of the Coens' most unnerving films, this is the episode for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is No Country for Old Men the Coens' bleakest brilliance or just a beautifully shot nightmare? Would you call it heads or tails… or just run for the hills? Is Anton Chigurh cinema's most chilling villain or just a man with a bad haircut and worse manners?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show!Listen to the full episode now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods.Don't forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and click the

In a very special non-anniversary episode, the Earful Gang is here to break down what's going on in an increasingly chaotic climactic action sequence. Roland's got The Device, The Device has helpful hazardous materials warnings, Egypt/Michigan has a gnarly pressure differential, and Griffin has some very mean drawings of Diane Lane. One more thing: we all have a possible Ghostbuster Situation. This episode also includes important information about the YouTube Original Series "Impulse: From the World of Jumper", the famous segment "March Towards 2018", and a musical pre-show (musical pre-show is not included in the podcast feed).
Send us a textDo you remember Streets of Fire from 1984? We don't. Not really. Especially after watching the trailer and wondering if this movie is a Musical or 90 minute music video. The cast is stacked with a young Diane Lane and maniacal looking Willem Dafoe. The hero, Michael Pare looks Hero-Like with his smoldering good looks, motorcycle riding, shotgun toting aesthetic. So this is going to be very good or very bad and we can't wait. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Grease up your pompadours and get your switchblades ready. This week we're taking a look at Walter Hill's 1984 rock and roll fable, Streets of Fire. Coming in hot off the back of the 1982 smash hit buddy cop picture, 48 Hours, Hill and co-writer Larry Gross could write their own checks and dictate their own destinies and sold Hill's dream project, a retro nostalgia vehicle about tough guys, femme fatales, bad guys, and pop music but when the movie landed in the screening rooms at Universal they knew they had a problem. Streets of Fire is weird as hell and out of step with what movie-going teens of the summer of 1984 were looking for. So dire was the outcome that Streets of Fire ended up getting killed in its opening weekend against one of the weakest Star Trek movies and then the following week Ghostbusters dropped and until Beverly Hills Cop came out it was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. In the years that followed Streets of Fire gained a cult following that appreciates what Hill was trying to do. It's an upgrade from The Warriors in many ways and the sound track, paired with powerhouse performances from Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe in early roles, delivers a wildly entertaining, deeply silly action movie with an enduring legacy. Cherry, baby! We are here with two-time Tony-winner and three-time Emmy-winner Cherry Jones. You Might Know Her From The Handmaid's Tale, 24, Transparent, Succession, The West Wing, The Village, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and her numerous theatre credits including The Heiress, Doubt, Mrs. Warren's Profession, and The Glass Menagerie. Cherry talked to us about playing the real life Eileen Myles on Transparent, grounding the violence on 24, whether or not she'll appear in the final season of The Handmaid's Tale, and she shares with us an actor's secret: her “moment before” from the Broadway production of Doubt. Plus, we got the scoop on going toe to toe with Brian Cox on Succession, whether or not she'd ever play Madame/Mama Rose in Gypsy, and trailblazing as a queer person in entertainment when she won her Tonys. This one was just a total treat!
