This podcast was originally recorded on Friday, October 15, 2021 for the CID Speaker Series featuring Andrew Stern, Founder and CEO of The Global Development Incubator(GDI). Stern continued the conversation with our CID Student Ambassador, Mandla Isaacs, after an appearance at the virtual CID Speaker Series event. Creating impact at the scale of the problems we are trying to solve in the world is hard -- be it climate change, global migration or agricultural finance. GDI aims to take good ideas and turn them into great solutions -- and ones that can attempt to make a dent in the big problems of our time. In addition to designing and launching new product or service solutions, GDI also creates multi-stakeholder initiatives that bring together governments, companies and nonprofit organizations to solve big problems, such as: How do we build a sustainable agricultural finance market in East Africa? Or, can we create more durable and ethical solutions for refugees and migrants? Or, how do we protect large swaths of forests around the world, with a minimum size being equivalent to the State of Vermont? GDI designs, builds and launches efforts like these and can share some of the lessons learned and pitfalls of attempting to do so.

And no one in his family will tell him what happened to his girlfriend, Sophie. Moses weaves an unforgettable story from family secrets, friendship, faith, love, and redemption. It brings readers deeply into the lives of those who suffer from mental illness, as well as the friends and family affected by it. Kathryn also interviews attorney Andrew Stern, author of “Justice Under the Rubble: The Salvation Army Building Collapse”. In June 2013, the roof of a Philadelphia Salvation Army thrift store collapsed, killing six people and injuring 13 in one day. Stern shares his personal experience as the attorney for Mariya Plekan, a Ukrainian immigrant who was buried for 13 hours crushed under layers of debris, and lost half her body whose medical bills were projected at $50 million.

On this episode of Court Radio, Dean Weitzman of MyPhillyLawyer talks to Andrew Stern, a personal injury lawyer, about the 2013 Salvation Army building collapse that left seven dead and thirteen injured. The client Stern represented was awarded $95.6 million dollars. Later, Dean answers legal questions from callers.
Andrew Stern, former president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and author of Raising the Floor: How a Universal Basic Income Can Renew Our Economy and Rebuild the American Dream, believes a universal basic income is the best way for the United States to deal with massive changes in our economy—changes that will only be exacerbated by increasing automation. “If we wanted to appropriately rename the country, we would call it the United States of Anxiety,” said Stern. “Only 21 percent of people think the economy is excellent or very good, despite the numbers to the contrary. Only 47 percent could find $400 in the case of an unexpected bill.” Stern says the purpose of Raising the Floor was twofold: to identify the problem on the horizon, and to ask what we’re going to do about it if the worst should come to pass. He talked about the historical origins of universal basic income, and shared specifics on his own plan, which would involve giving every individual age 18-64 one thousand dollars each month.

This weekend, on the BART ride to San Francisco and on the walk to and from my destination there, I listened to this fascinating debate on Intelligence Squared U.S.: The Universal Basic Income Is The Safety Net Of The Future. (It's also available as a podcast.) It was so thought-provoking that my walk turned into a rather long one, as I stopped every few blocks to sit down and scribble some notes in response to what I heard. The debaters in favor of the motion are the libertarian political scientist Charles Murray, infamous in many circles for co-authoring The Bell Curve, and labor leader Andrew Stern. These two make surprising debate partners, but of course, that's part of the fun! The debaters against the motion are Jared Bernstein and Jason Furman, both economic advisors to the Obama administration, and both more on the liberal / progressive end of the economic spectrum, which also adds to the interesting contrasts between audience expectations and the arguments made...

Think Different. You probably remember that as an Apple motto. But Andrew Stern of Global Development Incubator (GDI) applies the think differently model to the social impact space. It takes a different kind of thinking to apply the incubator model to nonprofits, but that’s what GDI does. You have to think differently if you want to help social enterprises go from startups to scale, but that’s what GDI does. You have to think differently about multi-stakeholder initiatives in which philanthropists, government agencies and private organizations team up take on Sustainable Development Goals. Again, that’s what GDI does. One of the initiatives GDI launched in 2016 is Convergence. Convergence is a platform that connects and supports private, public, and philanthropic investors for blended finance deals in emerging and frontier markets. Blended finance uses public and philanthropic funds to attract private capital, in order to achieve positive development outcomes. In other words, blended finance is: Government money + charity funds + private money = social impact. Convergence has an investor and deal network where investors and deals come together in a more efficient way. In this episode of Social Entrepreneur, Andrew Stern explains all of this different thinking. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Andrew Stern: “We’re trying to identify social agitators.” “What is the ultimate pathway to scale of impact that will really make a difference in the world?” “Convergence is the first platform exclusively for blended finance.” “The middle market or mezzanine level still has some gaps, and those gaps go beyond the financing.” “Get in the field and work on the ground.” “Very few of these good ideas are getting to the scale of impact that we want to see.” Mentoring Giveaway: Throughout the month of April, we’re giving away 10, one-on-one mentoring calls to help you launch or grow your social enterprise. Since the start of Pods & Sods (and for many years before), there have been five words that have summed up being a KISS fan perfectly. Those five words? WHY STOP BEING A FAN. Initially immortalized on a Conan O'Brien segment on the official New York KISS Convention and finding new life in the Pods & Sods theme song, Mr. Andrew Stern has finally found his way to us. And man, is it worth it as we discuss tons of KISS including that fateful day in front of Andy Richter, buying the Hotter Than Hell album in 1974, meeting Paul and Gene sans makeup (and calling Ace) as a kid, seeing the Dynasty tour, being in the audience for KISS Unplugged, getting angry at Peter at the Intrepid press conference, seeing the Tiger Stadium show, the worst onstage KISS logo ever, the best Gene song on Animalize, KISS 2.0 and so much more. A fitting end to a most fun week of KISScovery!
