POPULARITY
At the peak of his movie stardom and in the wake of having just won several Oscars for Best Picture-winner Dances With Wolves which he both starred in and directed, Kevin Costner (Yellowstone, Bull Durham, JFK) took on the iconic role of Robin of Locksley for his next major project. He partnered with long-time friend and director Kevin Reynolds (Waterworld, The Count of Monte Cristo) to spearhead this this new adaptation of an iconic story, while also filling key roles with several prominent stars of the time including Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman as Azeem, Christian Slater as Will Scarlett, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Marian, and most importantly at the time.....Alan Rickman (Die Hard) as the Sheriff of Nottingham. What resulted was a very rushed, messy production where several roles ended up being miscast (including California-native Costner as the British Robin) and where the villain pretty much stole the show. And yet when released in June of 1991, this film was a MASSIVE hit (much of that due to Costner's stardom) with several iconic scenes and a best-selling soundtrack. In fact, this would go to be the ONLY genuinely successful on-screen adaptation of the Robin Legend since then.....so did it actually work, does it hold up? Well only one way to find out....and remember that before you embark on this review: No blades! No bows! Leave your weapons here! “Locksley! I'm going to cut your heart out with a spoon!” Join Ian, Liam, Kev & Debbie for our 335th episode as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). Grab your bow, avoid the Sheriff's dinner invitations, and prepare for a film packed with accents of varying legality, spoon-based violence, and enough Alan Rickman scenery-chewing to feed Nottingham for a winter. Megs isn't with us this week — she was scheduled to record, but unfortunately entered an archery tournament disguised as a peasant and is currently hiding from the Sheriff's tax collectors. This week we discuss: Kevin Costner's Robin Hood — movie star charisma, questionable accent, and whether audiences have ever really cared. Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham — one of cinema's great villains. Does he completely hijack the film from everyone around him? Morgan Freeman's Azeem — wisdom, dignity, and why he often feels like the smartest person in every scene. The 1991 blockbuster formula — action, romance, comedy, spectacle. Is this the perfect example of a film designed to entertain first and ask questions later? Ian explores the film's historical accuracy — or more accurately, the complete lack of concern anyone involved seems to have had about it. Liam questions whether the film is secretly two films at once — a sincere Robin Hood adventure and a dark comedy starring Alan Rickman. Kev dives into the action sequences — archery, sword fights, castle assaults, and how well they hold up three and a half decades later. Debbie weighs in on the romance — does Robin and Marian's relationship actually work, or is it simply required by law in a Robin Hood movie? The supporting cast — Michael Wincott, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Christian Slater, and one very famous cameo that audiences still cheer for. The accent debate — does Costner's performance improve if you simply accept that nobody in this film comes from the same county, let alone country? The “show vs tell” balance — does the film earn its emotional moments, or rely on Bryan Adams to do the heavy lifting? The ending — triumphant, excessive, and unapologetically crowd-pleasing. Is this blockbuster filmmaking at its purest? And finally, whether Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most entertaining adventure films of the 1990s. Wasted Potential Podcast is back with a fiery commentary track for 1996's Dragon Heart! Oh boy its a rambling one in which we discuss some film facts, give our awful opinions, but mostly discuss other more interesting movies. We play some trivia games like Shot or Not, Creature or Feature (???), and Quaid or Costner. Side note: if anyone has a functioning taint and wants to offer it for a transplant, reach out to Hobo Dan at podcastwastedpotential@gmail.com. Thanks! Hobo Dan's Dragonheart synopsis: Our knight and shining armor…the man with a plan…the man who is gonna save us from Pokémon. Martin Lawrence with a jets jersey on. Ohhh no wait…it's just Dennis quaid is the knight or some shit I think. I'm assuming there is gonna be time travel or he goes back in time and befriends a dragon and some religious aspect to it comes into play. The movie is called dragonheart or dragon slayer. I hope they play a slayer song in this movie that would be sweet. Sean Connor is the guy that's anti dragons and Dennis quaid tries to save the dragon. But it's maybe Dennis quaid may want to fuck the dragon at the end maybe he falls in love with him. Oh no maybe his love becomes a dragon and then fucks it. That would be the best movie ever okay let's do that. You will believe in fucking dragons. Combine the wisdom of a fifth-generation superintendent with a historic golf course in one of the most picturesque parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and you begin to understand the appeal of Blowing Rock Country Club. This golf course dates back to 1915, and is impeccably maintained by Josh Costner and his team. It fits well into this scenic part of North Carolina's High Country, which has a wide array of wildlife, and 160 species of birds, including Bald Eagles. Costner relies on Redox TurfRx products for their impressive playing conditions.“We try to focus on playability a lot,” he said. “That's how we got into Redox, was getting more into the fast, firm, yet healthy grass plants.” Redox TurfRx® products utilized at Blowing Rock include K+, Linx™, XTraction™, Micro+, OxyCal®, CA, Supreme. Platinum and RDX-N®.Find out more about Josh's golf course at blowingrockcountryclub.com. It's the only Seth Raynor-deigned golf course in North Carolina.
This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes hit the links with "Tin Cup", the sports comedy-drama starring Kevin Costner as the talented but self-destructive Roy McAvoy. What makes this episode interesting is that Butler isn't a golf fan at all, while Field is a huge fan of the sport. Despite coming at the film from very different perspectives, both Mikes really enjoy it. Costner's Roy is a charming screw up, a man whose ego is often matched only by his self-doubt. His reluctance to take his shot in life makes him a surprisingly relatable character, and Costner balances the comedy and drama of the role effortlessly.Field is also a big fan of how believable the golf feels throughout the film. Costner looks like a real golfer, plays like a real golfer, and helps sell the authenticity of the sport in a way many sports movies struggle to achieve. With memorable performances, strong chemistry, plenty of laughs, and a protagonist who is easy to root for despite his flaws, "Tin Cup" proves that you do not have to love golf to love a great golf movie. While the Mikes have a few small nitpicks, they agree that "Tin Cup" remains one of the most enjoyable sports films of the 1990s and a movie worth checking out whether you follow the sport or not. What is your favorite golf movie? Let us know in the comments below!
Nobody Gets Off This Staircase: Krissy, Nathan, and Pete Take On The UntouchablesWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies. Hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell are joined by special guest Pete Wright—podcast impresario and pod boss at TruStory FM—to dig into Brian De Palma's The Untouchables (1987), where the real question isn't whether Al Capone goes down, but how far a straight-arrow fed is willing to bend to make it happen. The central tension here is a juicy one: Kevin Costner's deliberately bland Elliot Ness surrounded by Sean Connery's full-voltage Obi-Wan energy and Andy Garcia's silk-jacketed handsomeness. Is Costner's wooden earnestness a character choice or just… Costner being Costner? The gang has feelings. Meanwhile, Pete makes a compelling case that David Mamet is at his very best when someone else is in the director's chair—and that De Palma's camera (hello, split diopter) transforms stilted period dialogue into something genuinely cinematic. What keeps the conversation sparking is the sheer audacity of the filmmaking: an improvised staircase sequence that became the movie's most iconic scene, Armani-clad gangsters that make everyone want to buy overcoats for a city they don't live in, and a baby carriage that shows up twice in two consecutive episodes of the pod. The episode stays premise-level throughout, so you can jump in clean and still feel every gut punch.TruStory FM | Membership (early, ad-free access + bonus content): Join | Socials: Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | Learn more about the hosts: Neighborhood Comedy Theatre | Squishy StudiosIf you could only pick one scene from this movie to show someone who'd never seen it, which one would you choose—and why? ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. Send us Fan MailTHE BODYGUARD TGTPTU's first set of four Hack 4x4s concludes this week with THE BODYGUARD (1992), director Mick Jackson's sleeper hit starring peak Kevin Costner and top shelf Whitney Houston. Allegedly offered to Jackson the day after the L.A. Story premiere, the plot of The Bodyguard is bigger than you remember or would expect, so if you haven't seen it or not in a while, do so. Just know the script started with JFK's assassination as a Steve McQueen + Diana Ross vehicle and, after 67 rejections over 2 years, went through 12 rewrites by Lawrence Kasdan until it landed with Kostner who wanted Whitney Houston and Kasdan wanted out of directing. Hence, Jackson steps in as premium hack. It would become the second highest grossing film of 1992. This ep, Jack stays scarce, Andi returns bringing Dolly Pardon facts, Ken reminds us Costner would later direct The Postman, Ryan flexes his family's wealth, and Gen Z Thomas reveals a dark secret of how unamerican (or age-appropriate) his cartoon movie habits are having not seen a single Peanuts movie (NOTE: content may be edited or become exclusive behind the paywall) or 1999's Oscar-sweeping American Beauty. This week we're reviewing the 1991 Kevin Costner classic Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves. We'll travel back to 1194 to frantically help Costner look for his English accent. This high action darker take on Robin Hood was a global financial success earning over $390 million worldwide. Although Costner's hair and flaming arrow may have gotten you to the theater, it's Alan Rickman who steals the show as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Rickman delivers and steals every scene he's in, making you laugh the whole time. Does this movie hold up? Is Bryan Adams evil with that song? Why is the score so good? Dave, Rob and Kurt will join Robin and his Merry Men back in Sherwood Forest on this episode to rob from the rich and steal from the poor, and please, leave the dull spoons at home Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/id1662282694 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/11dk5TUoLUk4euD1Te1EYG?si=b37496eb6e784408 Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/1960c8f9-158d-43ac-89a6-d868ea1fe077/totally-80s-and-90s-recall YouTube Podcasts: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLH9lGakNgCDZUkkHMUu88uXYMJu_33Rab&si=xo0EEVJRSwS68mWZ Contact Us: Website: https://bleav.com/shows/totally-80s-and-90s-recall Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com LinkTree:https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall Voicemail: (509) 426-4542 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. This week, Shat The Movies heads to Prohibition-era Chicago with Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, a glossy crime epic that somehow combines operatic violence, moral absolutism, and one of the most iconic staircases in movie history. Featuring Kevin Costner at his most upright, Sean Connery at his most Oscar-winning, and Robert De Niro going full scarface-with-a-bat, this film has long been considered a prestige gangster classic—but does it still earn its reputation? Gene and Big D break down Ennio Morricone's unforgettable score, De Palma's shameless love of excess, and whether Costner's Eliot Ness is compelling or just aggressively boring. Along the way, they revisit Connery's scene-stealing mentor role, De Niro's cartoonishly menacing Al Capone, and the film's "history-as-vibes" approach to law enforcement. Is The Untouchables a towering crime masterpiece—or just a stylish collection of unforgettable moments stitched together with slow-motion hero worship? “How do you keep a hit series alive after killing off its biggest star?” That's the question Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray wrestle with in this hilarious and opinion-packed episode of The Ben and Skin Show. The crew dives into the latest TV buzz: filming for the new Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch, shutting down downtown Dallas to make it look like Chicago. Skin breaks down the plot twist—Costner's character is gone, Beth is still wild (with “partial jug” making a cameo), and Rip is stepping up as the ace starter. But can the franchise survive without its quarterback? Or has Yellowstone officially over-spun itself into oblivion?

Strap on your goggles and hoist the sails, this week on Born to Watch, the crew dives into a post-apocalyptic puddle with their Waterworld (1995) Review, Kevin Costner's legendary aquatic epic that soaked Universal Studios in ambition, cash, and controversy. Whitey, G Man, and Damo reunite to wade through the waves of cinematic history, revisiting a film as infamous for its behind-the-scenes chaos as it is for its soggy storytelling. From the jump, the team questions Waterworld's place in pop culture infamy. Once touted as the most expensive movie ever made, this maritime Mad Max-on-water starred Costner at the peak of his fame, but was it his creative apex or the beginning of his soggy descent? The guys don't pull punches, balancing deep dives into production lore with their trademark irreverent humour.Whitey sets the tone by confronting the bloated ambition of the project: “Has any Hollywood star become so famous with a catalogue with so many peaks and troughs?” Cue a wide-ranging Costner retrospective, comparing the golden days of Field of Dreams and The Untouchables to the indulgent excesses of The Postman and yes, Waterworld. The verdict? Costner might've been drinking his own Kool-Aid, filtered through a urine distillation machine, of course.G Man leads the crew through the absurd plot, where the Earth is drowned, the polar caps are melted, and dry land is a mythic memory. Costner plays the Mariner, a grim, gilled loner with webbed feet and a personality drier than the lost continent he's searching for. The podcast doesn't shy away from the film's narrative flaws: characters with no backstory, Mad Max rip-offs, and a complete lack of chemistry between the leads, most notably between Costner and Jeannie Triplehorn, affectionately known as “Jeannie Triple Blurter” by the team.Speaking of performances, Dennis Hopper's turn as the Deacon is eviscerated with delight. Compared to his electric villain in Speed just a year prior, Hopper here is an oily cartoon, piloting a rust-bucket Exxon Valdez filled with chain-smoking goons. “It's a bad Beyond Thunderdome,” declares Whitey, and the panel doesn't disagree. The gang revels in the film's infamous production disasters: hurricanes, a constantly rewritten script, Costner's massive creative control, and his falling out with director Kevin Reynolds. G Man reminds us of the legendary quote about Costner directing himself: “Now he gets to work with his favourite actor and his favourite director.” Ouch.Despite the floundering script, there are moments that the Born to Watch crew appreciates. The practical effects, like the massive floating Atoll set and Costner's tricked-out trimaran, get nods of approval, even if the action sequences are undercut by choppy editing and goofy stunts. And the team can't help but laugh at the iconic “pee filtration scene,” the rope-assisted bungee jump climax, and the infamous underwater city reveal, which defies all logic and basic physics. One of the episode's standout sections is “Question Time,” where the trio tackles the film's most baffling plot points: How does the Mariner's boat outrun jet skis? How does dry land remain uninhabited? And why, oh why, would someone spend their life searching for paradise only to leave it five minutes after finding it?The boys also pay tribute to the lesser-known cast and crew: a young Jack Black in a blink-and-miss-it role, Tina Majorino (aka the Enola of Napoleon Dynamite fame), and the brilliant yet misfiring score from James Newton Howard. “He dialled it in harder than Dennis Hopper did,” quips Damo.By the end, the Born to Watch gang reaches a consensus: Waterworld is a cinematic curiosity, too ambitious to dismiss outright, too flawed to celebrate, and just insane enough to warrant a watch. Maybe once.So whether you're a fan of ‘90s action epics or just here to marvel at cinematic misfires, this Waterworld deep dive is a splash of nostalgic chaos you won't want to miss.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Waterworld an underrated cult classic or a floating disaster?Would you survive in a world covered by the ocean? And seriously, how does that boat outrun jet skis?#BornToWatch #Waterworld #KevinCostner #MoviePodcast #90sMovies #PostApocalyptic #DennisHopper #JeanneTripplehorn #CultClassic #MadMaxOnWater #MovieReview #PodcastLife
What happens when Hollywood egos, sabotage campaigns, and directorial chaos collide in the Arizona desert? Tombstone is a film that survived one of the most tumultuous productions in Western movie history to become a beloved cult classic. You think the gunfight at the O.K. Corral was dramatic? That's nothing compared to Kevin Costner's alleged studio sabotage campaign, the director who got fired just one month into filming, and how Kurt Russell allegedly secretly took over directing duties while refusing to put his name on the film. A bitter rivalry with Costner's competing Wyatt Earp nearly killed Tombstone before it reached cinemas, and Val Kilmer's career-defining performance as Doc Holliday only really happened because of studio interference, which came from Costner's attempt to derail the production. From the scorching Arizona heat, to the replacement director brought in with just three days of preparation; a director who made the cinematographer quit three times, as well as various other crew members, Tombstone is a masterclass in how great movies can emerge from absolute production disasters. It's a tale of Hollywood hardball, Western justice, and that sometimes your worst enemy can accidentally become your greatest asset.I would love to hear your thoughts on Tombstone (1993) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Becoming an enduring part of pop culture doesn't necessarily mean your movie is good. So what's the verdict on THE BODYGUARD? Is there anything to it beyond that banger of a song and the undeniable chemistry between Costner and Houston? Did it get shortchanged when it only won one MTV Movie Award, or was it deserving of its multiple Razzie nominations? Nobody could ever accuse Kevin Costner of not taking huge swings throughout his career, and sometimes those huge swings resulted in Oscar victories. The pinnacle of Costner's career might have come with 1990's 'Dances with Wolves,' which perfectly married his penchant for bold storytelling and his personal vested interest in exploring and unpacking the myth of the American west. For Episode 339, I'm joined by Moneymaker Chris of The Grand Slam Podcast & Chrissy to dive into one of the most iconic baseball films ever, Bull Durham (1988). We're breaking down everything from Kevin Costner's effortless cool as Crash Davis to Susan Sarandon's sultry, spiritual, and surprisingly philosophical performance as Annie Savoy. We talk baseball as a metaphor, the reality of minor league baseball life, and why this film still hits a home run decades later. Is this the best baseball movie of all time?Where does this land in Costner's legendary sports film run?

Tania Raymonde is back for part two, diving into the sizzling romance It Ends with Us, discussing the undeniable chemistry between the leads. Could a love story like that play out in real life? We also spill the tea on what really goes down when cast members spark off-screen chemistry. The Yellowstone love stories continue as we swoon over Kevin Costner's timeless charm, explore behind-the-scenes romances, and confirm that Kevin's off-screen appeal matches his on-screen persona. Tania shares insider stories from The Big Bang Theory, revealing she once played Raj's girlfriend. She dishes on working with Kaley Cuoco, one of Hollywood's sweetest stars, and we share some surprising tidbits about Kaley's passion for equestrianism, including her private jet trips to pick up her horses! However, the mood shifts as we mourn the cancellation of The Flight Attendant, a show that deserved more recognition. Tania opens up about the pressures of working on multi-camera sitcoms—rehearsals, live audiences, and the physical challenges that come with it. She recalls a hilarious moment on Big Bang in an unsexy veterinarian costume. We then dive into the latest pop culture drama involving Lucas Bravo, the French heartthrob from Emily in Paris. His recent comments about the show have sparked speculation—was he throwing shade at his own series? We discuss the fine line between fame and gratitude, and whether actors should ever criticize their own work. Next, Tania shares wild stories from Lost, including some of the craziest fan theories about its controversial ending. With streaming bringing older shows back into the spotlight, we discuss how Lost's fan obsession is reigniting. The conversation shifts to John Krasinski, who was named People Magazine's 2024 Sexiest Man Alive. Was he truly the right choice, or does quirky charm win out over the rugged good looks of someone like Idris Elba? We explore what makes someone “sexy” in 2024 and ultimately agree that charm is the key. Then, we speculate wildly about Lady Gaga's mysterious role on Netflix's Wednesday. Will she play a quirky teacher, a sinister villain, or could she be a long-lost member of the Addams family? No matter what, we agree that Gaga is sure to steal the show. The episode wraps with hilarious travel stories, including a ridiculous in-flight fiasco complete with petty revenge involving hummus and pita chips. We share our personal mishaps and laugh over the absurdity of travel etiquette. Finally, we close with a coffee reading revealing that a personal or business project is about to reach a turning point, with success depending on adding someone's unique voice. Emotional healing is also on the horizon, hinting at transformation and closure. This episode is packed with Hollywood gossip, personal anecdotes, and pop culture debates, perfect for fans of Lost, Goliath, The Big Bang Theory, or anyone who loves a good celebrity conversation!
