Who the heck is Jimbo Hawkins? Most of you know him as Airmantee, the skater who went viral on TikTok and Instagram for doing a backflip. For Episode 23 of the Then and Now Blading Podcast, I dig into who Jimbo is. Did you know he has been blading for almost 20 years or that he grew up skating in Kentucky with Steven Tat, Brad and Chad Anthony, and the rest of the Southern Scum crew? Jimbo worked at Woodward East for four years, perfecting all kinds of flips on the mini mega on inline skates and a scooter. After his time at Woodward, he took several years off blading but returned to the sport to reconnect with Brad and Chad. It was Brad who first filmed and posted Jimbo doing a backflip as a joke to post on The Skate Company Instagram. That video racked up 12 million views, so they filmed a second one, which has now been viewed 56 million times on TikTok. This interview discusses how his life has dramatically changed since going viral. He talks about quitting his job, creating content, traveling, and what the future holds for Airmantee. Since the video was posted in May of this year, Jimbo has been all over the place. He was the host of the Official Blading Cup Instagram Livestream, was welcomed into the Them Skates family, made videos with Airdolphin, was on Braille, filmed with professional skateboarders, and connected with Ricardo Lino, and much more.Do you enjoy this podcast?Become a Patreon Member or Make a PayPal DonationYou can watch these podcasts as videos on the Then And Now Youtube channel. For the third episode of the Then And Now Podcast, I chat with Chad Hornish. I first met Chad back in 1997, when we drove to Phoenix, Arizona to introduce the Nimh team at Revolutions Skateshop's Thursday night skate. I filmed an edit of that trip that featured the Nimh Team and Phoenix locals, including Dustin Latimer and Chad. Shortly after he was added to the Team and we invited him on our California Tour with Montre Livingston, Brian Shima, Jon Elliott, Joey Chase, Adam, and Keith Brierley, and Casey MacFarland. In recent years Chad has been a force to be reckoned with on the competition scene, has produced numerous sections, and is now pro for Iqon Skate Brand. We discuss, Iqon, his skating, his sections, his travels, and more in this episode. For the first episode of the Then And Now Podcast, I interviewed the legendary rolling artist, Chris Peel. Chris played a huge behind-the-scenes role during the late 90s to mid-2000s in the aggressive inline skating industry. Growing up in Wakefield, in the UK, he started designing t-shirt's for Puberty Clothing before landing a job with DNA magazine. He then made his way stateside to San Diego, California, in 2000 to work for and design Daily Bread Magazine. In San Diego, he created the initial branding, image, and logos for Ground Control, Rat Tail Distribution, 4x4 Urethane, Vicious Bearings, and Nimh skates.Chris is a long-time friend who also designed the Big Wheel Blading logo for me in 2017. We haven't had much contact these last few years, so I thought it would be fun to contact him to catch up and reminisce on our years in San Diego, working at Daily Bread together and teaming up on many projects for Rat Tail, and it's brands.Do you enjoy this podcast?Become a Patreon Member or Make a PayPal DonationShow Notes:00:00 - Introduction03:55 - When Chris and I first met at the 1999 British Nationals04:42 - The beginnings, The Jaggers and Re-Hab Skatepark08:50 - Chris's Interest in Art, Designing for Puberty Clothing and DNA Magazine14:28 - Moving to San Diego to design Daily Bread Magazine18:28 - Meeting Jon Elliott, Jon's Daily Bread Interview, Ground Control22:55 - What the Ground Control sickle represents25:29 - The Rat Tail Years28:35 - Favorite Daily Bread Cover?29:42 - Moving back to San Diego, his favorite memories of living there34:50 - Leaving Daily Bread, moving to Orange County, and working for Haymarket40:00 - Moving to Richmond, aggressive skating less, getting big wheel blades, living in Alameda44:50 - Reminiscing on the crazy party we ended up at when visiting the Bay Area47:14 - What Chris is up to now, working at One Medical49:00 - Favorite projects that Chris has worked on51:30 - On becoming a United States citizen52:35 - The start of Vicious, the first tour, the Medusa stencil54:51 - Rat Tail, the state of the industry in the 2000s, Them Skates1:02:20 - bigwheelblading.com1:09:57 - Jan's Vermonting YouTube channel1:14:15 - OutroYou can watch these podcasts as videos on the Then And Now Youtube channel.
