The card started off strong with several finishes right from Jump Street, but it would level out with some decisions, albeit good ones with the exception of Pereira-Magomedov. Also: The Good, The Bad, and The WTF of making The Accidental Getaway Driver.

Send us a textIn episode 104, we dive into the 2021 horror film Black as Night. This not-so-unique blend of supernatural horror and social commentary takes us deep into the heart of New Orleans, where a young girl must confront a terrifying vampire threat that lurks in the shadows. We'll discuss the film's themes of colorism, gentrification, and the coming-of-age throughline that has a hard time hitting the mark. Grab your garlic and stake, and tune in for a deep dive into a film that will leave you questioning what's lurking in the dark.Timestamps Negronomicon: 04:56Crit: 29:17Pause here to avoid plot spoilers!: 34:16 Podcaster's note:A video that Mami Wata Mayowa posted online gave me the language I was looking for when we recorded this episode. The trope with colorism is that dark-skinned women are jealous of light-skinned women. This underlying belief colored the conversation this film was trying to have into a weird coming-of-age story that didn't sit right with me. I have a hard time understanding the perspective of the film has and I think there were a lot of other elements in the story that made this theme seem shallow at best. xo, LaurenGems from E104Black as Night (2021)Cheers (1982, television series)The Twilight Zone (1959, television series)The Faculty (1998)Scream 7 (upcoming)Companion (2025)The Blackening (2023)Barbarian (2022)22 Jump Street (2014)Idle Hands (1999)The Devil Wear Prada 2 (upcoming)Moana 2 (2024)Moana (2016)Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)Jason X (2021)Wolf Man (2025)Van Helsing (2004)28 Years Later (2025)The Last of Us (2023, television series)Fear Street trilogy (2021)Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)Goosebumps (2023, television series)Goosebumps: The Vanishing (2025, television series)Goosebumps (1995, television series)The Nightmare Room (2001, television series)The Haunting Hour (2010, television series)Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001, television series)Squid Game (2021, television series)Virgin River (2019, television series)Locke & Key (2020 television series)Sinners (2025)Mickey 17 (2025)Black Panther (2018)Spongebob Squarepants (1997, animated television series)Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999, animated television series)The Monkey (2025)Longlegs (2024)Until Dawn (2025)Until Dawn (2015, video game)Black Christmas (2019)Black Christmas (1976)Happy Death Day (2016)Cabin in the Woods (2012)Annabelle: Creation (2017)Lights Out (2016)Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)Groundhog Day (1993)Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)Chlorine Sky (Mahogany L. Happy Birthday, Danna! Even though it's her special day, we somehow didn't mention it on the podcast—oops! We kick things off by talking about the epic 8-second bull ride from 22 Jump Street. Jack takes on the challenge, conquers the bull, and nails that buzzer. Meanwhile, “Tom the Tool Man” Geraci has been busy transforming a new space in the house as the kids prepare to switch rooms. Of course, this remodeling project comes with a bit of parental negotiation and differing opinions. Kristin opens up about the challenges of parenting teens and admits she can be tough on the kids sometimes. She emphasizes the importance of time management, sharing her belief that keeping kids busy helps them thrive during these hectic years. In other news, Bill will attend a cool agricultural event that required a tuxedo. This sparked a great conversation about the pros and cons of renting versus buying formalwear. Finally, Kristin talks about a bizarre experience with her phone seemingly “listening” to her conversations—leading to a CAT-tastrophe that you won't want to miss. Stay Connected with Danna and Kristin!
Heute wird gelacht. Über Altes und Neues. Über 22 JUMP STREET, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, DAS IST DAS ENDE oder ONE CUT OF THE DEAD. Und DAS LEBEN DES BRIAN, ACE VENTURA, BRAUTALARM oder SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Oder anhand von BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR und POPSTAR - NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING. And don't forget to smile. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Cry-Baby is the pick of this week's supporter, Lucky LouLouGreen! Cry-Baby (1990), directed by John Waters, was a deliberate foray into mainstream filmmaking while retaining Waters' signature offbeat style. Set in 1950s Baltimore, the movie serves as a satirical homage to teen musicals like Grease and rebellious youth culture. Waters assembled a unique cast, headlined by Johnny Depp in his first major film role post-21 Jump Street, as he sought to break free from his teen heartthrob image. Alongside Depp, the ensemble included Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and Patricia Hearst, with Waters blending Hollywood newcomers with eccentric cult personalities. Filmed on location in Maryland, the production leaned heavily on a retro aesthetic, featuring vibrant costumes, classic cars, and rockabilly-inspired musical numbers. Waters worked closely with choreographers and musicians to infuse the film with both authenticity and absurdity, creating a stylized yet tongue-in-cheek tribute to 1950s pop culture. Despite Waters' reputation as a cult filmmaker, Cry-Baby was produced with significant studio backing from Universal Pictures, granting it a larger budget than his previous works. This collaboration with a major studio presented challenges, as Waters had to balance his trademark subversive humor with the commercial expectations of a broader audience. The film's over-the-top humor and campy sensibilities divided critics upon release, but it gained a devoted following over time, particularly among fans of musical comedies and Waters' unconventional storytelling. While Cry-Baby didn't achieve box office success, it cemented Waters' ability to inject mainstream cinema with his rebellious flair and ultimately inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway adaptation in 2007, solidifying its status as a cult classic. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Rebellious teen, Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker, captures the heart of Allison Vernon-Williams, a straight-laced girl from the conservative "square" crowd. On this episode of Paid in Puke, we analyze Susanna Fogel's 2023 thriller, Cat Person based on the 2017 short by Kristen Roupenian, and adapted for the screen by Michelle Ashford, who was the showrunner for Masters of Sex, but most importantly, wrote the teleplay to the abortion episode of 21 Jump Street. The film stars Emilia Jones, Geraldine Viswanathan, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, and Nicholas Braun. We all had very different feelings about this film, both from our initial watch together in the theater, and after our analytical watches for the pod. Journey with us as we discuss how heavy-handed a metaphor we can tolerate; why Fogel might have tried a bit too hard to cater to a male audience, at the film's expense; the surprisingly problematic element of the source material; and how Nicholas Braun perfected towing the line between awkward and creepy. Plus: Did Harrison Ford ruin a generation of men?
Author, filmmaker, and Listen To Sassy co-host Pam Ribon is back to help us figure out what Hysteria! is trying to do: satirize the satanic panic and witch hunts of a bygone era? invoke Stranger Things and the Church Lady? We're not even sure what genre we should call it, never mind whether you should watch it, but maybe our discussion will help you decide. We went Around The Dial with What We Do In The Shadows, The Change, and Woman Of The Hour before trying to sneak an undercover 21 Jump Street episode into the Ca-- er, the Pamon. Slow Horses won, car chases lost, and we got bogged down in minutiae with rightwood's IMDb-forward Game Time. Take a break from that pentagram copy-edit and check it out! GUESTS

Veteran theater and film actor James Sutorius has performed for the most prestigious regional and repertory theater companies including The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, Center Theatre Group, South Coast Repertory, and Pasadena Playhouse. He's also performed at Lincoln Center, Yale Repertory, Long Wharf Theatre, Seattle Repertory, and many more. In 2007, he won two San Diego Theatre Critics Awards for his performance as George in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and for his multiple supporting roles in John Strand's play "Lincolnesque." James made his Broadway debut in 1973 in "The Changing Room." In his very first entrance as a member of a rugby team, he had to walk downstage and strip off all his clothes! Instead of finding the experience terrifying, he actually found it liberating. And he played Laertes opposite Sam Waterston's Hamlet at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, alongside a cast of rising stars including Jane Alexander, Mandy Patinkin, George Hearn and John Heard. Most recently James was seen on Broadway in Aaron Sorkin's play "The Farnsworth Invention" that was directed by Des McAnuff and produced by Steven Spielberg. James was the voice for Ragu Spaghetti Sauce for 17 years, spawning the national catchphrase "Now, THAT'S Italian!" He continues to pitch other products for Coca Cola and Wrangler Jeans. He also lends his distinctive voice to audio books and short story anthologies on tape.On TV, James' break came when he starred as investigative reporter Mike Andros in The Andros Targets. He's also appeared on such well-known TV series as Dynasty, Cannon, Kojak, St. Elsewhere, Family Ties, 21 Jump Street, Murder, She Wrote, L.A. Law, The X Files, Judging Amy, and many others. And he was a regular on Bob Crane's short-lived sitcom, The Bob Crane Show. Additionally, he's appeared in such notable TV movies as: A Death in Canaan, A Question of Love, Skokie, Space, and On Wings of Eagles. In feature films, James can be seen in Dancing as Fast as I Can starring Jill Clayburgh and Windy City with John Shea and Kate Capshaw.
It's our Season TEN premiere AND our ONE HUNDREDTH EPISODE! Thank you to all of our listeners! We are thrilled to be back with our third Abortionpalooza, but much less stoked about the fact that thanks to the overturning of Roe V. Wade, uterus-owning Americans currently have less bodily autonomy than they did in Nineteen Hundred and Seventy Three. We kick things off with a brief history of abortion depiction on television and examine season 3, episode 5 of the teen cop drama, 21 Jump Street, "Whose Choice is it Anyway?". It originally aired on December 11th 1988 on the Fox network. It stars Holly Robinson-Peete, Stacey Edwards, and Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks). The teleplay by Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex, Cat Person), is surprisingly progressive and they even go so far as to make an anti-choice terrorist the villain. Then we tool around with Lily Tomlin and Julia Garner in 2015's "Grandma", directed by Paul Weitz (American Pie, About a Boy), and co-written by Tomlin, who put a lot of her own voice in it. Garner plays a high school girl who asks her free-wheeling grandmother (Tomlin) to help her scrounge up enough money to make it to an abortion appointment by 5 pm. Judy Greer, Marsha Gay Harden, Laverne Cox, and John Cho round out a fun supporting cast. We touch on themes such as who *needs* to be involved in deciding what to do about a pregnancy (*spoiler alert* it's pretty much just the person carrying the fetus), where should kids get information about pregnancy and birth control, and why women should be valued for more than just their fertility. On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal some information we wish we had never received.
When was the last time you went to your local cinema and watched a big, broad, people pleasing comedy? A Bridesmaids, a 22 Jump Street, A Step Brothers, a... Superbad? Stand-up comic and newfound friend of that there Ali Plumb, Rhys James, stops by the BBC Radio 1 studios to help answer that question as the pair look back on a movie that really delivered the laughs back in the day. That's right, Superbad. Pretty obvious from the title and the earlier mention but probably best to underline the point.

There's a lot of pop culture in the September 1990 issue that will need revision sooner or later. Like: a report on the cancellation of 21 Jump Street, just weeks before its revival in syndication. And: making James Marshall One To Watch off the strength of one season of Twin Peaks, before he went off the grid. Or: an extensive feature on The Hothouse Flowers, perhaps to justify the expense of whoever paid for Christina to go to Dublin and interview them. And while giving Die Hard 2 a mere 2 stars is, of course, a matter to taste...it's not taste we share. All this and much more awaits you in our latest podcast! QUICK LINKS
