Join me as I take a deep dive into the life and legacy of Franz Mesmer, the man who invented a strange and mysterious healing method that would inspire modern hypnosis and change the world forever. In the 18th century, Mesmer's daring, radical experiments with "animal magnetism" quickly catapulted him to the status of a celebrity, then plunged him into scandal. Was Mesmer a visionary ahead of his time, or simply a talented showman? Listen, and decide for yourself -- and prepare to be Mesmerized! The International School of Temple Arts (ISTA) utilizes the Large Group Awareness Training (LGAT) model. It focuses on sexual intimacy with the promise of spiritual transformation. Cara gives a fascinating account of her eight-year marriage to a one-on-on guru, who claimed to be descended from both Mesmer and Gurdjieff. She then relates her intriguing experiences with ISTA which breaks down sexual barriers as an LGAT. Cara now questions the ethics and possible negative consequences of ISTA as well as ISTA's refusal to take responsibility for those consequences or change practices that can have harmful consequences. Dave has a long experience of LGATs. They are part of a discussion about the ethics and efficacy of LGATs and are in discussion with others who have worked as trainers to see if there is an ethical framework in which group encounter can be safely and productively applied.Links:Korean Mock "Funerals" for a better lifeIra Chaleff's work on Courageous Followership and Intelligent DisobedienceLippman's Socrates for Six-Year-OldsMore on the Bear-Fedio indexMore on Decult

Unlocking the Joy of Comprehension in Early LiteracyIn this inspiring episode, literacy expert Diane Snowball delves into the transformative power of teaching comprehension in the foundational years (F-2). She underscores that comprehension is not just about understanding words but unlocking meaning, purpose, and the joy of reading. Diane shares practical strategies for educators and parents to nurture confident, thoughtful readers who engage deeply with texts.Diane begins by celebrating the enduring value of reading aloud, even as children become independent readers. She emphasises its role in modelling comprehension strategies like questioning, predicting, and visualising, and turning shared reading sessions into opportunities for rich discussion and wonder. Parents, she notes, can keep reading enjoyable and purposeful by focusing on open-ended questions such as, “What are you picturing as I read?”Choosing the right books is another cornerstone. Diane encourages educators and families to explore curated recommendations from trusted sources like Trevor Cairney's blog and specialist bookstores. A mix of engaging fiction and nonfiction builds diverse comprehension skills and exposes children to text features like headings and diagrams. In classrooms, Diane highlights the importance of integrating comprehension strategies naturally rather than teaching them in isolation. From inferring character motives in I Want My Hat Back to using nonfiction visuals for deeper understanding, the strategies come alive when applied authentically. She also champions teaching text structures, such as recognising the sequence in a recipe or the narrative arc in a story, to build confidence in approaching varied texts.Diane concludes with a call to action for educators, families, and policymakers to prioritise access to quality books and teacher training. By working together, we can ensure every child discovers the magic and power of reading.Takeaway for Teachers: Embrace comprehension as a joyful, meaningful practice. Esimesed magnetid, mida õpiti tundma, on looduses leiduvad rauaühendid. In Part 2: The Importance of Teaching Comprehension in F–2, Diane Snowball captivates listeners with her invaluable insights on teaching comprehension to Foundation through Year 2 students in Part 2 of this illuminating podcast series. Her wisdom bridges the gap between theory and practice, empowering educators to weave decoding and comprehension seamlessly into their teaching. The Role of Shared ReadingDiane paints a vivid picture of shared reading (together, all eyes on enlarged text)as a powerful tool for nurturing young readers. She delves into teaching cohesive ties—those linguistic threads that connect ideas in texts—and offers practical strategies, like revisiting pronouns to establish meaning. Through examples such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, she demonstrates how teachers can encourage students to actively engage with texts and illustrations, fostering critical thinking from the very first page.Inferring: Unlocking Meaning Beyond WordsThrough her discussion of Rosie's Walk and Saturday Mornings, Diane underscores the importance of inference. She highlights how teachers can guide students to combine textual and visual clues, transforming them into confident meaning-makers. These skills, she asserts, are just as crucial for nonfiction as they are for narrative texts.Integrating Decoding and ComprehensionDiane champions a holistic approach where decoding and comprehension grow in tandem. Shared reading becomes the conduit, combining phonics, vocabulary, and sentence structure with comprehension strategies in authentic contexts. This integrated method enhances literacy and maintains the joy of reading.A Focus on Quality TextsDiane emphasises selecting rich, multifaceted texts that offer opportunities for repeated readings. She encourages teachers to harness the power of these texts for decoding, writing, and comprehension instruction, simplifying planning while maximising learning.A Lifelong Literacy FoundationBy embracing Diane's practical, intentional methods, educators can set their youngest learners on a path to literacy success. With cohesive teaching strategies, meaningful texts, and a love of learning, the foundation for lifelong readers is built.READ THE BLOG HERERESOURCESDuke, Nell K., Ward, Alessandra, E. and Pearson, P. In the latest episode of “The Importance of Teaching Comprehension in F-2 – A Conversation with Diane Snowball,” literacy expert Diane Snowball sits down with Phil to explore why comprehension should be the heartbeat of early literacy, especially in an era dominated by phonics and decoding. Diane passionately explains that teaching comprehension is not something to reserve for later; instead, it should be woven into reading instruction from the very first day a child encounters a book.Diane discusses how comprehension isn't just about words—it's about engaging young minds in the "who, what, where, and why" of stories, even when they're just listening. Through read-alouds, children not only hear the words but also experience the deeper mechanics of storytelling. Diane emphasises that read-alouds, like in her example of sharing “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” invite children to explore concepts of character, setting, and make-believe in an accessible way, building a foundation for thoughtful reading as they progress. As they chat, Diane explains the importance of choosing texts with coherent structures and rich language, helping children develop an ear for narrative flow and language patterns that support comprehension. She talks about the role of varied sentence structures, how listening comprehension aids independent reading, and the vital role that illustrations play in helping young readers visualise and make sense of stories.Diane's insights remind us that comprehension is far from a passive skill. It's a dynamic process involving curiosity, connection-making, and critical thinking. With her strategies and thoughtful approach, Diane empowers educators to prioritise comprehension, guiding children to become not just readers, but engaged, thoughtful participants in the world of stories. We would love to hear from you! Send us a message (if you'd like a reply, email us at literacypodcast@greatminds.org)Heidi Anne Mesmer discusses her book Big Words for Young Readers. She emphasizes the importance of teaching young readers to decode and understand words with multiple syllables and morphemes. Heidi Anne highlights the need to teach morphemic concepts early on and provides recommendations for teaching different types of morphemes at each grade level. She explains that morphology, the study of word parts, is a crucial component of reading comprehension and vocabulary development. Mesmer provides practical strategies for teaching morphology, such as teaching the morphological principle and using activities like 'Make It Big' to build students' confidence in creating big words. She also emphasizes the need for explicit instruction in morphology from an early age and highlights the benefits of using cognates and word chains to support multilingual learners. TakeawaysThe book Big Words for Young Readers focuses on teaching young readers to decode and understand words with multiple syllables and morphemes.Syllables are sound units, while morphemes are the smallest units of sound that carry meaning in a word.Teaching morphemic concepts early on can help students distinguish the meaningful parts of words. There is no strict scope and sequence for teaching morphemes, but it is important to consider the frequency and applicability of different types of morphemes at each grade level. Teaching morphology is essential for developing reading comprehension and vocabulary skills in young readers.Strategies like teaching the morphological principle and using activities like 'Make It Big' can help students understand and create big words.Explicit instruction in morphology should be integrated into phonics instruction from an early age.Cognates and word chains can be effective tools for supporting multilingual learners in developing their morphological knowledge.Resources Big Words for Young Readers and the entire Scholastic Science of Reading in Practice book series!

We have middle and high school students who through the summer have been learning about how to craft their own stories and then produce them on a podcast.Free activity sheet available at www.rituvaish.com/podcast-summer-camp Let's give a warm welcome SaanvitaTranscriptTitle: The Magical HornThere once was a place full of magical creatures, there were enchanted forests, charming oceans, vibrant coloured birds and there were the mythical unicorns !!!This was their fantasy land called. Mesmer, . The forest was mesmerizing. Below each colourful tree, there were beautiful houses. The flowers were equally if not more beautiful. There were pink Lily flowers, white daisies, golden sunflowers, purple vines and dark green creepers. The unicorns used these flowers and vines to make garlands and crowns for each other. All of them were happy ey make magical things like toys, paper etc.Once when Bella, a unicorn, got her unicorn keeper Wendy. She was super excited as to have a unicorn keep meant to get magical powers. Indeed, Wendy gave powers to Bella and explained, “ Bella! You must listen to me and never misuse these powers.” Bella nodded and always obeyed to her keeper, Wendy. One day while playing fetch, the ball fell near a big purple door that was decorated beautifully. Wendy and Bella went to get the ball. Bella asked, “ where does this door lead to??” , Wendy replied,” It's a door between the evil queen and the unicorns. You must never enter it.”That day Bella kept thinking about the purple door. Bella was thinking about the purple door while both of them walked back home. Bella somehow couldn't get the purple door out of her mind and eventually she sneaked towards the door and walked straight into the door.. Bella was surprised to see the room for it had sparkling jewels studded everywhere and the pleasant fragrance gave the room a very calming effect. The evil queen wanted to get magical powers from the unicorn. Looking at Bella, the the evil queen thought if she acted nice then Bella will give her powers. The evil queen changed herself into a beautiful queen and welcomed Bella. Bella was impressed by the beauty of the queen and the room. The queen gifted Bella several gifts like rainbow sprinkles, sparkly bracelets, colorful hatchets, a Unicorn heart chocolate etc.The evil queen asked, “What are your special powers, my dear Bella?”By now Bella felt she was safe and shared everything with the evil queen.“These are great powers, why don't you share some with me…Sharing is caring, right?”Back in Mesmer, Wendy who noticed Bella was missing started to search for her. Luckily When Bella was about to give her powers Wendy pushed open the purple door and d grabbed Bella and stopped her in the nick of time..The evil queen got angry and came to her evil form. Then the evil queen tried to grab Bella but Wendy carried Bella and ran outside the purple door. She then locked the door forever. So that no innocent unicorn gets caught by the evil queen. Bella promised to never run away from Wendy and always be safeThe End

She is a PhD candidate in the English department at Stanford University, where she has taught courses on Victorian spiritualism, ghost stories, and the gothic novel. She holds an MA in English from Stanford University and a BA in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin. As an undergraduate, Steele observed the social behavior of lemurs, wielded a trowel as part of a central Texas archaeological dig, and learned to identify primate fossils and human bones. As a graduate student, she disappeared into the archives of Victorian Britain, and now emerges only periodically to collect new tarot decks, hunt for fossils, and hoard art supplies. Steele splits her time between foggy NorCal and sunny South Texas, towing her mountain of journals and sketchbooks with her wherever she goes. You can learn more about Steele by visiting SteeleAlexandraDouris.com :50 Steele's book is Spirits, Seers & Séances: Victorian Spiritualism, Magic & the Supernatural. 2:36 What is a “Victorianist?” Plus Steele's academic passions. 3:26 A passion for archaeology, art, and literature. 5:01 What did the newspapers have to say about it? “I work a lot in newspapers… 19th century newspapers, 19th century periodicals and early 20th century women's magazines.” 6:38 In her research into Spiritualism, Steele was amazed by how many Spiritualist magazines, newspapers, and periodicals there were at the time, like The Medium and Daybreak. “The material really just gave me a glimpse into the entire engine of the Spiritualist community beyond just what I had pictured at the beginning.” 7:38 Steele includes really great “try it yourself” exercises at the end of each chapter! Examples include instructions for holding a traditional spirit circle, sitting for a solitary seance, meditating like Dr. Mesmer, automatic writing/automatic art, channeling blindfolded, sitting for a psychic portrait, practicing psychometry, channeling your inner folklorist, exploring your own shadow/reading a gothic tale, scrying, making a Halloween card, or holding a Christmas seance! 8:55 Patrick discusses some of the really cool fall issues of The Delineator, an American women's magazine of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 10:51 Tableaux Vivant, a fascinating, long-lost Victorian party activity. 12:02 “It's hard to move in many modern occult circles without tripping over the Victorians. And yet, somehow, in the process of becoming ubiquitous, the Victorians have also become invisible.” 16:16 Patrick on one of his “a-ha” moments from the book: “Some of us dream of putting away our modern tools and technology to pretend we're Victorian. But in reality, Victorians were all about becoming modern, with the huge advances in technology that was happening at the time.” 16:16 What economic class of Victorians are we usually imagining? 21:12 Need a timeless response to someone worried about the dangers of using the Ouija Board or practicing any form of spirit communication? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 22, 2023 is: mesmerize MEZ-muh-ryze verb Mesmerize means "to hold the attention of someone entirely; to interest or amaze someone so much that nothing else is seen or noticed." The word is often used in the phrase "be mesmerized." // The crowd was mesmerized by the flawlessly synchronous movements of the acrobats. See the entry > Examples: "Yep, Ruth [Handler] ended up naming two of her iconic dolls after her kids. The idea for Barbie and Ken stemmed from a family Europe trip in 1956.... Barbara, then still a teenager, saw a doll that looked like an adult woman in a store window in Switzerland and was mesmerized." — Korin Miller, Women's Health, 21 July 2023 Did you know? Experts can't agree on whether Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) was a quack or a genius, but all concede that the Swabian physician's name is the source of the word mesmerize. In his day, Mesmer was the toast of Paris, where he enjoyed the support of notables including Queen Marie Antoinette. He treated patients with therapeutic procedures (called, appropriately enough, mesmerism) involving what he claimed was a mysterious force termed animal magnetism. (Many believe that mesmerism was what we now call hypnotism). Accordingly, the verb mesmerize was first used to mean "to subject to mesmerism" before broadening to be synonymous with hypnotize, and later to mean "to amaze or captivate."
Come along this week as we discuss the mysteriousness of Hypnosis! Support the show on patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=80108564 Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, heightened suggestibility, and deep relaxation that allows individuals to be more open to suggestions and influences. It is often induced by a trained professional, known as a hypnotist, through a process called hypnotic induction. In this state, individuals may become more receptive to changing their behaviors, perceptions, thoughts, and sensations. Hypnosis is often used for therapeutic purposes, such as managing pain, reducing anxiety, overcoming phobias, and addressing various psychological issues. History of Hypnosis: Hypnosis has a long and varied history that spans cultures and time periods. Here are some key points in its history: Ancient Practices: Traces of hypnotic-like practices can be found in ancient civilizations. The Greeks, Egyptians, and Romans all had rituals and practices that resembled what we now recognize as hypnosis. 18th Century: Franz Mesmer, an Austrian physician, is often credited with laying the foundation for modern hypnosis. He developed the concept of "animal magnetism" and used techniques to induce a trance-like state in his patients. While his ideas were later discredited, Mesmer's work influenced the development of hypnosis. 19th Century: James Braid, a Scottish surgeon, coined the term "hypnosis" in the 1840s. He rejected the metaphysical explanations of Mesmer and focused on the psychological and physiological aspects of the phenomenon. Braid's work helped establish hypnosis as a legitimate field of study. Late 19th to Early 20th Century: Hypnosis gained popularity and was used for various purposes, including medical and psychological treatment. Sigmund Freud initially used hypnosis in his psychoanalytic practice but later shifted to other therapeutic techniques. Mid-20th Century: Hypnosis fell out of favor in the medical and psychological communities due to misconceptions and the rise of other therapeutic approaches. However, it continued to be practiced by stage hypnotists and alternative healers. Late 20th Century: Hypnosis regained recognition as a legitimate therapeutic tool. Milton H. Erickson, an American psychiatrist, contributed significantly to the modern understanding of hypnosis by emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches for individual patients. Contemporary Usage: In the modern era, hypnosis is widely used for clinical and therapeutic purposes, often in conjunction with other forms of treatment. It is employed to address various issues, such as chronic pain, anxiety, stress, addiction, and trauma. Mechanisms of Hypnosis: The exact mechanisms underlying hypnosis are still not fully understood. However, it is generally believed to involve alterations in cognitive processing, attention, and suggestibility. While some individuals are more naturally susceptible to hypnosis, anyone with a willingness to participate and follow instructions can potentially experience hypnotic trance. During hypnosis, individuals are guided into a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus. This state may lead to changes in perception, memory, and suggestibility, allowing for the acceptance of therapeutic suggestions that can help address specific issues. It's important to note that while hypnosis can be a valuable therapeutic tool, it is not a magical or supernatural phenomenon. It operates within the bounds of an individual's existing psychological and physiological capacities.

Dimitri and Khalid talk with music producer/researcher @KhristKoopa about the career of German scientist Franz Anton Mesmer and his theories of “animal magnetism” that took late 18th century France by storm, including: Mesmerism as precursor to Spiritualism, the ain't nuttin' new overlaps between Serious Science and metaphysics throughout history, Mesmer's confirmed membership in the Bavarian Illuminati, discovering a field of “invisible fire” more subtle than ether, Mesmer's remarkable rizz, running group “seances” in Paris, curing the blindness of piano prodigy Maria Theresia von Paradis, hanging out with Mozart, Jesuits lurking on the periphery, the Illuminati's passion for tactical PR and ARGs, early theories of the subconscious, yet another Ben Franklin deboonking saga, noting the real phenomenon of hypnosis operating within Mesmer's “magnetic” therapy, tracing the legacy of magnetism through Freud up to modern mind control, and how the under-examined sex magick teachings of African-American occultist Pascal Beverly Randolph and his Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor/Light influenced Helena Blavatsky and Aleister Crowley. It seems like every other week there's a news report about how coffee will help you live longer or will shorten your life. There are similar reports about vitamins and water consumption and any number of other health-related studies. So why do we see so much conflicting information around scientific research in the media? In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, a look at the slippery problem of separating correlation from causation. You'll hear the fascinating story of Franz Mesmer and the apparently miraculous effects of what he dubbed animal magnetism. Author Mara Rockliff recounts the sway that Mesmer held over the Parisian public and how Benjamin Franklin transformed the scientific method in his quest to find the truth.Mara Rockliff has written several books for young readers, including the multiple award-winning Mesmerized: How Benjamin Franklin Solved a Mystery That Baffled All of France.Next, economics professor John List joins Katy to discuss the reasons why we confuse correlation and causation and explains the best practices for separating the two in the study of charitable giving, early childhood education, business, and policy.John List is the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago and the chief economist at Walmart. Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab.
