Welcome to another episode of the "Inflamed in the Brain" podcast, hosted by registered dietitian Krissy Carbo. In this episode, Krissy dives deep into coconut oil, a food that's often misunderstood despite its potential health benefits. While some people avoid coconut oil due to its high saturated fat content, Krissy explains why it's not the heart disease risk many believe it to be. She also discusses three unique ways to incorporate coconut oil into your diet.Addressing Misconceptions About Coconut Oil:The episode begins by addressing a common misconception: that saturated fat automatically leads to heart disease. Krissy explains that while coconut oil can raise LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels, it tends to raise the larger, fluffier LDL particles, which are less likely to cause heart disease. The smaller, denser LDL particles are the ones that penetrate artery walls, leading to plaque buildup and inflammation. The larger particles, on the other hand, have a lower risk of causing such damage. Furthermore, coconut oil can also increase HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, which helps remove excess LDL from the bloodstream.Key Health Benefits of Coconut Oil:Krissy highlights three health benefits of coconut oil:Increased Energy: Coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are rapidly absorbed and transported to the liver. Once there, MCTs are converted into ketones, providing a quick energy source for both the body and brain. This makes coconut oil an excellent addition to your diet if you need a quick energy boost.Promotes Regular Bowel Movements: The MCTs in coconut oil can help stimulate bowel movements, promoting regularity and reducing constipation. This quick movement through the digestive system can help people who struggle with irregularity, providing a gentle laxative effect.Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Coconut oil's MCTs and lauric acid offer anti-inflammatory benefits. Ketones from MCTs have been shown to reduce brain inflammation, which is crucial for those dealing with neurological disorders. Lauric acid has antibacterial and antiviral properties, further reducing inflammation in the body.Unique Ways to Incorporate Coconut Oil Into Your Diet:Krissy offers three creative ways to include coconut oil in your meals:Coconut Oil in Coffee: Add a teaspoon of coconut oil to your morning coffee for a creamy texture and energy boost. This is a popular method among those who follow a low-carb diet and may also help with regularity.Chocolate-Covered Strawberries: Use coconut oil to make chocolate-covered strawberries. The oil's high saturated fat content helps the chocolate set quickly when cooled, allowing you to create a sweet treat without a long wait time. It adds a subtle coconut flavor to the chocolate and holds its texture well.Smoothies With Coconut Oil: Adding a spoonful of coconut oil to your smoothies provides a creamy texture and a hint of coconut flavor. It can be used in place of other fats for a healthier, energy-boosting smoothie. Conclusion:Krissy wraps up the episode by discussing the versatility of coconut oil and its potential to support a healthy lifestyle. She encourages listeners to experiment with coconut oil in their cooking and offers a bonus tip: replace dairy milk or cream with coconut milk or coconut cream in soups, stews, and curries for a dairy-free option.Krissy also cautions against excessive use of MCT oil due to its concentrated nature and potential laxative effects. For those who want the full range of benefits, coconut oil's lauric acid and MCT content offer a balancedFollow along: https://betterwithcarbo.com/ Instagram

Did you know that Monolaurin can help boost your immunity? Monolaurin is derived naturally from lauric acid, which is extracted from coconut or palm oil, and generally recognized as safe. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid which occurs naturally in human breast milk and in some plants (ie: coconut and palm kernel fruit). Monolaurin is produced in humans when lauric acid is ingested, or through supplementation via monolaurin capsules or pellets. I was not aware of the amazing benefits of Monolaurin, which is why I'm super excited to share this month's featured business podcast episode with Damon Sununtnasuk. Damon serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Natural Cure Labs LLC, operating as Palmara Health and VitaTails brand supplements. He has an internationally decorated career in health, technology, and entrepreneurial leadership and his work and travel has taken him to more than 70 countries across six continents. He is the founder and president of several award-winning companies, including an industry-recognized strategy consulting firm with a global client base. Damon earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Florida and his Master of Business Administration (First-Class Honours) from the University of Cambridge, England. Lower risk of dementia found among people with higher carotenoid levels National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Aging, May 6 2022. An article appearing on in Neurology® reported an association between higher levels of several carotenoids and a lower risk of developing Alzheimer disease and other dementias during a 16 to 17-year average period. Carotenoids are a family of yellow to red plant pigments, including beta-carotene, which have an antioxidant effect. Participants whose levels of the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-cryptoxanthin were highest were likelier to develop dementia later in life than individuals with lower levels. Among those aged 65 and older upon enrollment, each approximate 15.4 micromole per liter increase in lutein and zeaxanthin was associated with a 7% decrease in dementia risk during follow-up. For beta-cryptoxanthin, each 8.6 micromole per liter increase was associated with a 14% reduction among those older than 45 at the beginning of the study. “Further studies are needed to test whether adding these antioxidants can help protect the brain from dementia,” Dr Beydoun concluded. A Mediterranean-style diet decreases the levels of the inflammatory marker called C-reactive protein University of Bologna (Italy), May 3, 2022 Sticking to a Mediterranean style diet decreases the levels of the inflammatory marker called C-reative protein, linked to ageing, finds the EU funded project NU-AGE. Another positive effect of this diet was that the rate of bone loss in people with osteoporosis was reduced. Other parameters such as insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular health, digestive health and quality of life are yet to be analysed. This is the first project that goes in such depths into the effects of the Mediterranean diet on health of elderly population. We are using the most powerful and advanced techniques including metabolomics, transcriptomics, genomics and the analysis of the gut microbiota to understand what effect, the Mediterranean style diet has on the population of over 65 years old" said prof. Claudio Franceschi, project coordinator from the University of Bologna, Italy. The project was conducted in five European countries: France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and the UK and involved 1142 participants. There are differences between men and women as well as among participants coming from the different countries. Volunteers from five countries differed in genetics, body composition, compliance to the study, response to diet, blood measurements, cytomegalovirus positivity and inflammatory parameters. Resveratrol's blood pressure benefits may pass from mother to child University of Alberta and University of Adelaide, May 4, 2022 Hereditary hypertension may not pass the generations if the mother is given resveratrol supplements during pregnancy, suggests a new study with lab rats. Offspring of spontaneously hypertensive rats were found to be protected from elevated blood pressure once they reached adulthood if their mothers had received resveratrol supplementation during pregnancy. “Maternal perinatal resveratrol supplementation prevented the onset of hypertension in adult offspring and nitric oxide synthase inhibition normalized these blood pressure differences, suggesting improved nitric oxide bioavailability underlies the hemodynamic alterations,” wrote the researchers in the journal Hypertension . The new study supplemented the diets of spontaneously hypertensive female rats with 0 or 4 g/kg diet of resveratrol from gestational day 0.5 until postnatal day 21. The offspring of these rats were then followed to adulthood. Results showed that the adult offspring had significantly lower blood pressure than their mothers. Additional tests indicated that the potential blood pressure lowering activity observed in the resveratrol-fed animals was not linked to nitric oxide Krill oil may be beneficial to muscle function and size in healthy people over the age of 65 University of Glasgow (Scotland), May 6, 2022 The study—led by the University of Glasgow's Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences (ICAMS) and published in Clinical Nutrition—found that krill oil supplementation of four grams per day could have beneficial effects on skeletal muscle function and size in this age group. The research found that healthy adult participants who had received daily krill oil supplementation for six months showed statistically and clinically significant increases in muscle function and size. Krill oil contains high concentrations of the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which previous scientific studies have shown are important nutrients for the body as it ages. The randomized, double blind, controlled trial included 102 men and women all above 65 years of age. The participants were relatively inactive to engaging in less than one hour of self-reported exercise each week on entry to the study. The study found that participants receiving daily krill oil supplements showed the following improvements (from baseline) at the end of the study: Increase in thigh muscle strength (9.3%), grip strength (10.9%) and thigh muscle thickness (3.5%), relative to control group. Increase in red blood cell fatty acid profile for EPA 214%, DHA 36% and the omega-3 index 61%, relative to control group. Increased M-Wave of 17% (relative to the control group), which shows the excitability of muscle membranes. New research shows cannabis flower is effective for treating fatigue University of New Mexico, May 6, 2022 Researchers at The University of New Mexico have used a mobile software app to measure the effects of consuming different types of common and commercially available cannabis flower products on fatigue levels in real-time. As part of the study, researchers showed that over 91 percent of people in the study sample that used cannabis flower to treat fatigue reported symptom improvement. In their recent study, titled "The Effects of Consuming Cannabis Flower for Treatment of Fatigue," published in the journal Medical Cannabis and Cannabinoids, the UNM researchers showed that using cannabis results in immediate improvement for feelings of fatigue in the majority of users. This was the first large-scale study to show that on average, people are likely to experience a 3.5 point improvement of feelings of fatigue on a 0-10 scale after combusting cannabis flower products The study was based on data from 3,922 cannabis self-administration sessions recorded by 1,224 people. "One of the most surprising outcomes of this study is that cannabis, in general, yielded improvements in symptoms of fatigue, rather than just a subset of products, such as those with higher THC or CBD levels or products characterized as sativa rather than indica," said co-author and Associate Professor Sarah Stith. "We're excited to see real-world data and studies support the use of cannabinoids for helping individuals manage their fatigue and energy levels," says Tyler Dautrich. "This obviously has implications for patients experiencing fatigue as a symptom of their medical condition, but we also feel this can lead to healthier options to the current energy drink and supplement market." Study: Coconut oil contains molecules found to be effective against coronavirus Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), May 2, 2022 New research out of the Philippines has uncovered yet another potentially viable candidate for treating and preventing the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) without the need for pharmaceuticals or vaccines, and it is lovingly known to many of our readers as coconut oil. Dr. Fabian M. Dayrit, PhD, from Ateneo de Manila University, along with the help of Dr. Mary T. Newport, MD, from Spring Hill Neonatology in Florida, looked at the known antiviral benefits of coconut oil to see if they may also apply to the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19). Lauric acid (C12), along with its derivative monolaurin, has been known for many years to possess natural antiviral activity. A medium-chain fatty acid that comprises about 50 percent of coconut oil's makeup, lauric acid is widely recognized as a “super” nutrient, as is monolaurin, which is produced by the body's own enzymes upon ingestion of coconut oil. These nutrients work in tandem to disintegrate the “envelopes” that surround viruses, and this includes the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19). These two nutrients can also inhibit late-stage maturation in the replicative cycle of viruses, as well as prevent the binding of viral proteins to the host cell membrane. Another antiviral compound found in coconut oil that also plays a protective role is capric acid (C10), along with its derivative monocaprin. Though it only makes up about seven percent of coconut oil, capric acid has shown effectiveness against HIV-1, which is important because evidence has emerged to suggest that the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) may contain HIV DNA. In this video, Dr. Berg talks about coconut oil and its three main benefits. Coconut oil is the largest seed on earth and it will boost HDL or the so-called “good cholesterol”. Fatty acids and ketones are the fuel you can get from coconut oil and it is a much better fuel than glucose because it gives more ATP than carbs. 1. Brain – Supports the brain. MCT or Medium Chain Triglycerides – is a type of fat that turns into ketones. Ketones protect the nerve and brain cells against stress. It boosts cognitive function and is very beneficial in people with dementia and even Alzheimer's. 2. Anti-Microbial - It has fatty acids and these acids are antibacterial, antifungal, anti-candida, and yeast and antiviral. 3 main fatty acid in coconut oil: Caprylic, Capril, Lauric (precursor to monolaurin) 3. Energy – MCT oil does not require digestive enzymes. Fuel from Coconut: • Fatty Acids • Ketones SAVE 50% OFF DR. This week I interview Hanna and Lauric. Though they both currently live in South Africa, they have both moved around a lot throughout their lives, one of the many things they have in common. Having met at university, the two were friends for a while, before they started dating, by which point Hanna was already seeing her forever with Lauric. Lauric faced a moment of self doubt, feeling that Hanna was too good for him, but the couple stayed strong. Lauric decided to make a ring box for Hanna, and proposed to her in a garden shop. They decided to get married only a few weeks later, and had a “Things that fly” themed wedding. Instagram: @RSVPod Twitter: @RSVPod Website: www.rsvpod.com Patreon: www.patreon.com/rsvpod
Lifestyle, training, and diet are the three overarching umbrellas that affect our health and fitness goals, and figuring out how to best balance them is unique from person to person. For instance, someone trying to lose body fat trains differently, eats differently, and goes about their day differently than a powerlifter on a strength cycle. But central in almost any fitness plan is nutrition. Although needs shift from person to person, eating nutrient-dense foods full of essential minerals, fats, and amino acids (protein) is at the root of any diet. MCT Oil: The saturated fat for training both your body and your mind! When we say “nutrient-dense” and “essential”, there is a great amount of misunderstanding. Our take is that a highly-misunderstood “essential” fat is saturated fat, and a group of these increasingly popular fats are in the group of medium chain triglycerides, which boast powerful health benefits. Otherwise known as MCT (or MCT Oil), these critically useful fatty acids are finally getting recognition like other important fatty acids. As a high-quality source of dietary fat, MCTs have a ton to offer, with evidence supporting it can yield positive effects in your training, your body, and your mind! TL;DR (Article Summary) MCT Oil, short for medium chain triglycerides, are a group of saturated fatty acids that are quickly-absorbed for rapid energy thanks to their shorter structure. Saturated fat is healthy. There is no causal link whatsoever between saturated fat and heart disease or obesity. In fact, the obesity crisis began when we collectively replaced saturated fat with omega-6 polyunsaturated fats from “vegetable oils”. (See the saturated fat discussion) The medium chain triglycerides, or “MCTs”, are a group of saturated fatty acids with “medium” chain lengths, ranging from six to twelve carbon bonds. These fatty acids caproic acid (C6), Caprylic acid (C8), Capric acid (C10), and Lauric acid (C12). (See the MCT Intro section) When supplemented, MCTs demonstrated the following benefits: Decreased appetite (through increased satiety), increased cognition, improved beta-oxidation (fat burning) rates, better gut health, and potential immune system improvements. (See the MCT oil benefits section) Due to unfavorable characteristics of C6 and C12, C8 and C10 are the preferred MCTs to supplement, with C8 having the best data in terms of beta oxidation and ketone generation. (See the MCT Supplements section) Preferred MCT Oil Products: For powdered MCT Oil, we prefer C8Vantage, which is made by NNB Nutrition and is a nearly-pure C8 formula that is GMO-Free, vegan-friendly, and has no glycemic impact since it is plated on tapioca prebiotic fiber and pea protein, bt other dairy-based options are available as well. In this post, we're going to take a deep dive into MCTs – what they are, why they're different, how to use them, and where you can find the best ones – both in liquid and powder form. We're also going to look at published research focused on MCTs, which will help us paint a clearer picture of their benefits. Brace yourself for an in-depth, science-backed look at a food seemingly built for athletic and cognitive performance! MCTs – the optimal fat source for effici... Read more on the PricePlow Blog
Certainly, the fat-soluble vitamins, vitamins A and D, both important. Lauric acid as a fat. Coconut oil might be a good fat choice for the fat in your diet. Monolaurin would be a very good choice for a supplement. Lauricidin is the best monolaurin to take, 3 to 10 grams a day. Be careful of your bowel tolerance, spread it out among your meals, and cut back if it starts to loosen your stool. Elderberry, which has mostly been studied in the context of flu, that probably has good antiviral properties. Garlic. Garlic appears to require very high doses if you're just taking a garlic extract. If you're taking stabilized allicin, 180 micrograms a day is good. But you could raise the question what if you're missing on some of the other important compounds in the garlic. I'll debate with some of my friends about that, but what's really been tested is 180 micrograms of stabilized allicin. Then zinc for sure in the immune response is super important. Then you get back to nutrient density. Although I'd give special importance to vitamins A and D, arachidonic acid just mentioned, zinc and copper, both, and then those supplements. If you're missing any one particular nutrient, then you're going to wind up with a specific vulnerability that will persist until you fix that one nutrient. Thanks, anonymous. Coconut oil, amino acids and what it has to do with the herpes virus https://youtu.be/STKVUA-OC-I Life With Herpes In the recent years, coconuts have become the holy grail of the beauty industry and is the solution to so many ailments. It’s claimed to prevent Alzheimer's, prevents heart disease, it doesn’t store as fat in your body, it is an immune booster and the benefits of coconuts just goes on and on. Trust me, I love coconut oil too. It’s great for cooking, I love using it as a lotion, as a moisturizer for my face, for keeping my teeth white and my favorite is lube. I should probably do an episode just on this. If you remember from previous episodes we break down arginine and Lysine and coconut is one of the biggies for the arginine to lysine ratio. Yikes!!! So is coconut oil good for your herpes outbreak or what? Coconut oil and coconut water don’t contain amino acids only the coconut milk and coconut meat contain amino acids. What this means is coconut oil and coconut water is excellent for you especially when you have an active outbreak. On the contrary, you will want to limit your coconut milk and coconut meat intake. Wondering how this all works? Let’s first talk about viruses. They have this protective outer shell that is made up of protein. This shell is what prevents our bodies from essential killing it or taking control of the virus allowing the virus to multiply in our body. Here is how the coconut oil comes to the rescue. The coconut oil contains Lauric acid and capric acid and they get metabolized and attach to the virus. The cool thing is that when this happens the coconut oil can dissolve this protective shell. It’s kinda like the virus getting caught with its pants down. The virus now has no protection and thus the virus dies. Pretty cool right? Moving forward, use as much coconut oil as you like for your cooking, sex and outbreak prevention. Here's my favorite coconut oil lube I use. Click here to learn more. Welcome back! This is Christina Moyes. Fatty Fat McFattersen: FACTs about FATs FAT IS GOOD FOR YOU! That is the big headline for today. Specifically, I’ll be addressing SATURATED FAT. Yes - I said SATURATED FATS ARE GOOD FOR YOU. I’ll be talking about how this can POSSIBLY BE, how it’s been misconstrued over the last several decades and what fats you really want to avoid. FAT IS GOOD FOR YOU! Saturated fat is good for you – say what? We have been told for – well since I was growing up in the 70’s that saturated fats like butter and animal fats lead to heart disease. But Nay! Not so. This myth is largely in place due to inconclusive research done in the 1950’s by a man named Ancel Keys . His study not only failed to connect saturated fat with heart disease, but failed to include other risk factors like smoking, stress, poor diet and lifestyle or exercise habits. And there have been no studies following his that have been able to directly link saturated fats with heart disease either. In fact, those that have come close have included the intake of artificial trans fats which, are the REAL culprit, and I’ll talk about those later, but first let’s review the BENEFITS of saturated fats. The brain is made up of 2/3’s fat and brain cell membranes are made of Essential Fatty Acids . So fat is not only essential for brain health, but also for energy, metabolism, hormones, healthy skin, eyes and bones as well as reproductive health and growth. The three most common types of saturated fats are Stearic acid, Palmitic acid and Lauric acid. One thing they have in common is that while they do raise LDL (bad cholesterol levels) they also raise the good HDL cholesterol levels even more. I’ve talked a bit about Lauric acid in the previous episode “Eat These, Lose Weight”. You will find it in coconut oil and it can help boost your immune system and even lower abdominal fat. Specifically, you will want to look for QUALITY types of saturated fat like: Cold-Pressed Unrefined Coconut Oil, cold-pressed olive oils, Raw, unpasteurized butter and organic meats like chicken, beef, lamb, fish and duck. What you want to stay away from are Trans Fats. These types of fats are actually banned in several countries for good reason! They raise the bad cholesterol, lower good cholesterol and leave behind a sludge in the arteries which can build up over time, making a perfect storm that can lead to heart disease. THESE ARE THE BAD GUYS! Trans fats are used in this country because they are cheaper to use and extend shelf life. They’re found in processed foods and baked goods and are listed on the ingredients label as “hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated vegetable or other types of oils”. Packaging can be deceiving. If something is labeled “0 Trans fats” on the front of the package, DON’T take their word for it. If a product has 0.5g of trans fats, it can still be labeled as 0g Trans fats! So check the ingredients list and keep in mind that you need to consider how many servings you are eating of each product. Know how much you are eating and try to avoid them. Stay away from margarines or fake butter spreads. It may be counter-intuitive, but use organic or raw full fat butter or the previously mentioned sources of quality fats – all in moderation! Until next time: Keep it Simple. Be Healthy.
