Over the weekend, the Green Party announced their proposal to have a one year national moratorium on the consenting of new Artificial Intelligence Data Centres until proper regulations have been set up. Consent for a 3.5 billion dollar hyperscale AI data centre has already been approved for Southland, which is set to be the second highest consumer of electricity in the country, requiring 280 MW of power. While supporters claim that it will bring in jobs and allow New Zealand to be at the forefront of the AI industry, many have raised concerns about the harm it could cause to New Zealand's natural environment, the strain it will put on our energy and water resources, and the fact that projects have been seemingly approved with little public consultation.  I spoke to Dr Kerry McInerney from the School of Computer Science at the University of Auckland, about public perceptions towards AI Data Centres in New Zealand, concerns that have been raised and whether there can be a social license for data centres to be implemented.

A Clare primary school student has become the latest winner of the An Post Primary schools handwriting competition. The competition celebrates the incredible creativity, care and imagination of young writers across Ireland. This year's theme, “Making Better Happen in our communities,” inspired thousands of pupils to reflect on kindness, connection and the role they can play in shaping the world around them. Doora/Barefield manager Donagh Vaughan claims their TUS Clare Senior Football Final appearance is 'five years in the making'. The Parish will contest their first decider in 13 years when they take on reigning champions Éire Óg on Sunday afternoon in Zimmer Biomet Páirc Chiosóg. After coming through the group phase with just one point, wins over Kilmurry Ibrickane in the quarter final and Cratloe in the last four saw them through to the big game. Vaughan says there's a great buzz around the parish going into the game and that his players are determined to deliver a performance. Meanwhile, Éire Óg star, Mark McInerney, claims they're well aware of the threat Doora/Barefield pose to their crown. Jay McInerney is a New York Times best selling author known for his breakout novel Bright Lights Big City. He also wrote the screenplay for the 1988 film adaption of Bright Lights Big City and co-wrote the screenplay for the 1998 film Gia, starring Angelina Jolie. In addition to his fiction work, McInerney was the wine columnist for House & Garden magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and currently writes the wine column for Town & Country magazine.
