- Fauci slips past the most obvious perjury deadline, turning one of the biggest COVID lies into yet another escape from accountability. - A gunman who once shot at police ends up back on a Cambridge street firing wildly again, with the episode pinning the blame on a judge who never should have let him out. - New York's crime machine looks even darker when a career criminal murders a 76-year-old after a prior victim refuses to cooperate because she does not want to send “another black man” to jail. - Anti-Jewish intimidation in Brooklyn is framed as open-air terror, with masked mobs marching through Jewish neighborhoods while political and media elites keep normalizing it. - The 2028 contrast sharpens fast: Rubio surges on the right while AOC climbs on the left, setting up the possibility of a showdown between fluency and total delusion.

This week on the podcast, we sit down with first-time novelist Shawn Lawlor, author of Boom Road — a darkly funny, tender, and at times violent debut novel set in rural New Brunswick in 1982. Boom Road follows Jackie O'Connor, a sawmill worker living a simple life along the banks of the Miramichi River. Jackie believes in one thing above all else: keeping your word. But when he unexpectedly inherits a large sum of money, his quiet world is thrown into chaos. Old ghosts resurface, trust becomes slippery, and suddenly everyone wants something from him. With his dog Ruby by his side and a canoe beneath him, Jackie navigates a rapidly shifting moral landscape, trying to keep both his balance and his integrity intact. Shawn joins us to talk about the very ordinary moment that sparked the first line of the book — spotting a pair of skates hanging in someone's garage during a COVID-era walk — and how what began as a simple writing exercise slowly revealed itself to be something much bigger. Before he knew it, he was working with a publisher and holding a novel in his hands. We also talk about: Growing up in Miramichi, New Brunswick, and how hometowns quietly shape our creative instincts Writing characters and places that feel deeply familiar — the kinds of people we all recognize from our own communities Shawn's creative life outside of writing, including theatre, music, and stand-up comedy His time teaching in Japan and how living abroad influenced his perspective and storytelling Why you don't need to be a full-time artist to make meaningful, resonant work Shawn is funny, generous, and a natural storyteller, and this conversation is a reminder that creativity often begins not with ambition, but with attention — noticing the small details, trusting curiosity, and following the thread wherever it leads. If you've ever wondered whether there's room in your life to make something creative alongside everything else, this episode is for you. One of the most ancient questions in the world was asked by Job in the old testament - "How can a man be just with God?" Or maybe we could say "How can I have my sins forgiven? How can I know that I will be in heaven?" The Lord Jesus told a story to illustrate what the answer was. You see, the answer to God's ancient question is Christ himself. It is through Christ that we are justified and cleared of all guilt. It is through Christ that we have peace with God.

Happy Thursday, you pop culture junkies. This week's conversation includes: A devastating weekend in the news: We talk through the senseless shooting at Brown, the horrific terrorist attack at a Jewish event in Australia, and the tragic deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. We also unpack the deeply troubling, inhumane response from the current U.S. President—and why moments like these demand leadership, empathy, and moral clarity. Erika Kirk everywhere: From her book tour to that CBS interview everyone's dissecting, we break down what's being said—not just by the public, but by creators themselves. Is Erika Kirk a demon or just divisive? We get into it. Niche TikTok chaos: There's some very specific, very online drama unfolding around SolidCore, and yes—we explain why it matters (and why you might suddenly care). Closing on a lighter, steamier note: We end with joy, absurdity, and horniness: HBO's new gay ice hockey series, Heated Rivalry. Skates, rivalry, feelings, and heat. Exactly what we all needed. Heavy at the top, unhinged at the end—because that's pop culture, baby.

This one starts out a little differently. Ian Paratore was born and raised in San Francisco, but he's moving away. This week. To Oakland. Ian's dad, Vince Paratore, moved into a Victorian in The Haight in the late-Seventies/early Eighties, and is still there. That's the house Ian grew up in starting roughly 10 years later. Both of his parents are artists and teachers. His dad came to San Francisco from Syracuse, New York, to study photography at SF State. And his mom, Valerie O'Riordan, is from Long Beach in Southern California. She moved to The City to work with ACT (American Conservatory Theater). The house at Page and Clayton is the only place Ian's dad has lived in SF. I asked Ian whether he knows any stories from that house before he was born in the early Nineties. Both his parents being "natural hosts," there were many parties. Nowadays, when his dad is out of town, Ian will sometimes have parties of his own at his dad's place. When he does, he says his dad often offers up stories from back in the day. One involves a party with so many people already inside cramming a hallway, folks had to come and go via the first escape. Back in the day, his dad was a general manager at restaurants like Stars, Donatello, Garibaldi's, and Beach Chalet, which he helped open. Both his parents were big in the San Francisco restaurant scene. We turn to Ian's early life, which he experienced in the mid-Nineties to early 2000s. As a kid, and a kid without a backyard, he spent a lot of time in Golden Gate Park and The Panhandle. He hung out on playgrounds and basketball courts. He adds that "the craziness of Haight Street was just … normal." I ask Ian about Skates on Haight, which I knew from my Eighties/Nineties skateboarding days from ads in magazines like Thrasher. (Marcella, who took photos for this episode and was with us at the table, chimes in at this point.) Ian rattles off some spots from his childhood in The Haight—places like Gus's before it was known as Gus's, an Ethiopian restaurant, and a musical instrument store. In high school, Ian got into visual arts and playing sports—mainly baseball and basketball. By the time he got to college, he played baseball "at a high level," and art fell more or less by the wayside. More on that in Part 2. But during high school, though he took art classes, sports dominated his life. We end Part 1 with Ian rattling off the San Francisco schools he went to. He did a stint at College of San Mateo (CSM) before getting into UC Berkeley, which was the first time he lived outside his childhood home. He had flirted with college on the East Coast before deciding to stay closer to home. Check back Thursday for Part 2 with Ian. And join us tomorrow for a very special, timely bonus episode. Follow Ian and Break Fake Rules on Instagram. We recorded this podcast at 540 Bar in the Inner Richmond in October 2025. Photography by Marcella Sanchez
