Send us a textWhen will you retire? What years of your life should be the ones where you work the longest, hardest hours? On the show today is Derek Coburn, author of Let's Retire Retirement: How to Enjoy Life to the Fullest—Now and Later, a book that very probably will rock your mind because it challenges key beliefs that most of us share about retirement. For instance: at what age will you retire? Probably your answer is 65, that's the number that jumps off most lips. But Coburn says probably you won't and he adds the zinger that other ages may well work much better for you.Like what? How about 75? Or 70?And fact is more Americans are working longer- indeed the fastest growing age cohort in the workplace is Americans aged 75 and older!Surveys also say that approaching 25% of Americans age 65 and higher are now working. And Ciburn believes that number will only increase as many American seniors are today healthier, more active than were Americans of the same age a generation ago.A bonus: retire later in life and you need far less retirement savings. You'll hear actual numbers in the show - and it will blow your mind.As for what years you should work longest and hardest? Coburn argues that it's when your kids are home and for many that means working less in your thirties and forties. Is that catastrophic for your retirement savings? No, because you will be working later in life you need less retirement savings. QED.In the show, mention is made of an app. Death Clock AI. Here's a link to the Washington Post story about it. In the show Coburn mentions CU 2.0 founder/CEO Kirk Drake and Resistance Wine. I've drunk it, it's good.Coburn says he wears an Oura ring. Here's the linkIn the show also there's mention of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a brilliant psychologist who documented the phenomenon he called flow where work is highly focused and we are happiest.

Based on a Real Story Hannah longs for the days when she used to be free, but now, she is a Jewish prisoner at Theresienstadt, a model ghetto where the Nazis plan to make a propaganda film to convince the world that the Jewish people are living well in the camps. Along with other young resistance members, they vow to disrupt the filming and derail the increasingly frequent deportations to death camps in the east. Our water tastes great in Millheim. Wanna know why? Trout. Trout fishing is a very big deal in central PA, from the Yellow Breeches Creek in Cumberland County, to Cedar Run in Lycoming County, the Little Juniata, and Centre County's Spruce, Spring, and Penns Creeks. I talked to a pair of young fishing guides at The Feathered Hook fishing store in Coburn, and to Tom Doman, a licensed guide who's been fishing Penns Creek since 1979. We didn't just talk about Green Drakes and wet flies, riffles and lies. We talked about how trout fishing and anglers have brought back and preserved the quality of the waterways in central PA, and how that affects every day quality of life here. Then I went to a couple of Opening Day parties, which also affect the quality of life around here! Everything can be a celebration, and Opening Day is a good one. What I Drank Today was a bottle I'd misplaced when we moved back in 2021: Paul John Indian Single Malt Christmas Edition. The extra three years sitting in the dark hadn't hurt it at all. If you've never experienced Indian malt whisky, I hope this encourages you to try some. The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau spot highlighted four Centre County lodging spots that are perfect for anglers. And I told you more about a small contest we're running: finding a central PA food to star in an upcoming episode! Tell me what you love, and why it should be the winner! (This is your chance to make me cook ham pot pie!) What's next? I promise you, it won't be fish again! See you in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! Fan favorite Hard Mike returns to the show alongside newcomer Syd Bricks to discuss Paul Schrader's Affliction, one of the filmmaker's most well-observed explorations of addiction and the generational cycles of suffering that manifest as a result of leaving personal trauma and pain unresolved. The film follows Nick Nolte's Wade Whitehouse, an alcohlic, washed-up cop in a small New Hampshire town whose maladies put him at odds with his community as he circles the drain, falling deeper into his own delusions of murder, conspiracy, and betrayal. The film also stars a monstrous James Coburn as the Whitehouse patriarch, in a role that would earn him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Together, we discuss our personal experiences with alcoholism and why the film is one of the very best about the subject in its dizzying, unmooring evocation of being caught in the chaos of addiction, both as the afflicted and as someone who loves them. Then we discuss the film's novel use of the neo-noir format as a subversive element of narrative to capture us in the dragnet of delusion meticulously architected by the film's unreliable protagonist. Finally, we praise the exemplary work of the film's cast, especially Nolte and Coburn, and how their screen personas function perfectly as characters filled with unmanageable woe, malice, and hurt.
